so do you have the know some button you get? you can find a lot. munoz, on our website at the w dot com. i don't blame the police. i blame one person. the one who took the life of my son. those are the words of the mother of nile. the teenager killed at a traffic stop on the outskirts of paris. she does not blame the system, a thousands of protesters who have taken to the streets since the fatal shooting. do. c killing has brought to the surface long simmering grievances and the french phone use or distrust of the police runs deep. and the feeling of this enfranchisement has people ranging against the state. they believe does not represent them. i'm the call for the chamberlain and this is the day the nothing can justify violence,

especially when it consists of attacking public building, town halls, police station, schools or looting shops. the buses, the bundle behind us. i say this very forcefully that used every day by people living in the suburbs and working class neighborhoods. why have they done this? i think it's because they're desperate. for me it's because they have the impression that there's a double standard in justin. this is a moment for the country series, the address safety issues, braces and, and racial discrimination. also on the day results, former president, you're both on iris, political career haynes by a thread, the after record bars him from public office until 2030 is. it's an emblematic day, like september 6, 2018, and when i was stopped in the chest, today i, we stopped in the back. it was not j, u m a c, as well as an arrow, which of the stablish a bazillion democracy. welcome to the show.

france continues to be on high alert after 4 days of protests over the killing of a teenager at a traffic stop. it started as a cry for accountability has been merged into a massive mobilization against the stomach problems in french society. the officer involved has been charged, but on the streets of many cities in france, protesters don't believe he was the proverbial bad apple, especially in minority ethnic communities. the 17 year olds killing a scene as another instance of repressive policing of marginalized groups. full stars. he's a desperately trying to extinguish kyle's across from the police, killing of paris, teenage in my ear, has ignited widespread rage, the fury descending into destruction. more than 800 people have been arrested.

president emanuel nicole lived in e u summit to try and reign in the riots as he sees many of those involved. a young people in blank, social media flickering, the unrest we've seen on snapshots tick tock and several other platforms. well, those to organizational bond and gatherings and the minute king of violence. yes, it leads young people to the chat from reality. and to feel that some of them are living on the streets of video game having talks okay to them. more offices being deployed to control the violence, but the united nations has voiced its concerns about french police. this is a moment for the country to seriously address the issues of racism and racial

discrimination in law enforcement. we also emphasize the importance of peaceful assembly. the french government rejects the accusations that some of the regions have this some of that these i suppose because the clothes that goes on for i think this is the logical consequences to police violence. next the tab. it's unacceptable. what are the prima act to the current situation? so some comes from police, going to find you to us through us compiler quote, understand the anger behind all of this, but it's still shopping, isn't our proof? i think we need to debate all of this so that people understand what motivates them to get violence in the 1st place. i know which of us, right? love you understand why your voice. i think that has been too much buttons given what happened to people, there was no need for this kind of a 60 cent per se. shops have nothing to do with what happened is a new view of what you can already have. public transport will wrap up
12:07 am
early and public events of being pulled off as far as he's fear, the violence will escalate over the weekend. and joining me now for more from paris is on. so if he's on pear, she's a former researcher, as amnesty international france and the author of the book, how the state attacks, our freedoms and the some very welcome back to the w, a frances applying tens of thousands of police to curb be expected nighttime writing in your opinion, is this the right way of dealing with the protests? let's say that's considering in less than the abilities of including damages to family prophecies. you can understand why they're deploying forces to try to control the, the rest of the riots. however, i think i have to address also to did the root cause of the anger of use. uh, they came to the street because of the murder of night, but i think a little to choose um, bad memories with the police and memories of interaction that lead to violence and
12:08 am
legal violence, mediation, racism, and. and the government is telling the huge denial regarding the situation between the police and this using the suburban and it's in just a just decided to can the, the, to come down this situation without taking a long term measures. i can bet them into a few years. it will stop again. mm hm. uh, we heard the french president, they're blaming video games for the riots. what do you make of that? um, i think 1st of all, in the politicized lot of the situation, and i would rather have a president talking about the role and the situation of the police and how this use can have such a mistrust ins institution. uh, that would sound more serious then. uh, the user video gaming protest is nothing you, i mean, you should look at the homecoming protest in 2019. they were very much inspired by
12:09 am
the video games. uh so uh, probably its true the thought of the filter of the use with, i think it's not really relevant right now. yeah. and not the discussion that you would like to say. obviously, the french government has rejected you and accusations of racism and systemic discrimination within the police force as totally on founded. and how do you see it? that's part of the denial i was regretting. before i knew you had the same denial, but please return it to the government. doesn't even want to use this words. i mean, there are several incidents of a systemic racism in the police. of a few years ago, the on the 10th of the french ombudsman was saying that the black or a man has 20 times 20 more times 15 times to be checked by the police. then a white person. you have also decision be the highest court of justice and friends against the french that because of a discriminatory check bank of police. so it is an issue and it is very important

in this, in considering the current situation to address it. but the problem is that to find a solution after that, there is a problem and uh, at the moment, uh it is quite touring. the government is the, is still refusing to hear the un has and so face on pair and pairs. thank you so much for your take one week on from the wagner mercenary groups aboard it and you, me, in russia foreign minister, sir? good luck. ralph has done the failed rebellion, a mis adventure, moscow's top diplomat. stress to foreign media that russia would come out of the uprising stronger than before. if gave me precautions. mercenaries came within 200 kilometers of moscow last weekend, only to stand down after a deal broker to buy bella bruce's alexander lucas shingo. wagner mercenaries have taken a leading role in russia's war and ukraine, but the group is also active in syria and africa. lever upset that wagner

12:15 am
i'm joined now by kimberly martin. she's a professor of political science at columbia university's herman institute. thank you so much for joining us. you've been following the wagner group for quite some time. how did they become so powerful on the african continent? with russian help, they are not really a private military company. they are really an arm of the russian state. and every single contract that they have in africa, in syria, everywhere else. but they have been, it has been done through negotiation with russian diplomats and with other russian ministries like the energy ministry in this area. where is that co operation left? now after this coup? we don't know for sure, but i think it's really interesting that started a lot broke in the quote that you had just a few moments ago. said he, he names the wagner group by name, which is the 1st time that we've had russia admit that the wagner group is actually in africa to my knowledge. because the wagner group is playing such an important role in both the central african republic. and in molly,
12:16 am
in terms of shoring up the leadership there, my guess is that they are going to be maintained. and also in eastern africa, working for the world are to leave off tar, who controls the eastern part of the country. and the central african republic. they are what keeps the government in power. there's just no question that they have uh brought a level of stability to the government that it would not have otherwise. molly, it's too early to know how successful they'll be, but that's what they're trying to do. so from a western perspective, wagner has been a destabilizing agent, but from, from what you're saying, it seems like from the inside, it must feel like they are stabilizing somehow. so with this re shuffling going on now, and parts of wagner being integrated, or they're being attendance of parts of wagner being integrated into the russian military. where is that role left then, or so the stability has come from stabilizing autocratic leadership. it's not that
12:17 am
has left them unstable in the central african republic, except they've committed, terrible human rights violations in, in order to get where they are now. in molly, they may in fact be destabilizing things because partner was responsible earlier for kicking out the french presence there that was engaged in counterterrorism activities. and most recently, as your report indicated for causing the united nations security council approved piece mission to now be on its way out at the end of the year. so you know, it all, we're not sure what this means for the future, but because it is a creature of the russian military intelligence unit. and because pre goshen has had his role, not because of his challenge, not because of any combat experience, but because of his support by flooding their poaching, my guess is if would be pretty easy to replace precaution with somebody else and that there's no particular reason why anything needs to change in the deployments in africa as a result of what happened in rust out this past week. but the governments of
12:18 am
countries like, you know, molly and libya, all the countries that we're looking at right now, they do have contracts with wagner and lager has these mining licenses that we heard about in the report. would it be easy for someone else to just swoop in there and say, hey, now we're taking over which the contracts are not with partner, because wagner technically doesn't exist, the contracts are with the series of companies, but progression has set up. so i'm not sure who keeps move in or why they would want somebody else to, to move in. um, wagner has just invent control over these contracts and russia. and it's not pre goshen of an individual that matters so much as what the wagner fighters and the wagner security guards are bringing. so i think the biggest question is whether these governments are willing to share sufficient information with other agents in russia to allow them to take over how much of this was just in precautions head versus how much was written down or is available elsewhere. and then most
12:19 am
importantly, whether the wagner forces on the ground are so loyal to provision that in his absence, they would refuse to keep on fighting. i don't think that's the case. they've known all along that they're actually fighting for russia. they're russian patriots. they are really good at what they do and they're not good at much else. and so my guess is that things are likely to continue pretty much as they have been with or without for goes and being the one in control. and looking back at what we saw and sold over the weekend, some analysts believe that africa is actually where the tensions between wagner in moscow 1st started to show would you agree? and we do have the one interesting piece of evidence today that somebody fired on the wagner base camp in eastern libya and the libyan u. n recognized governments claims that they did not do it, that they have maintain the ceasefire. so that's an interesting thing to look at. it's interesting to also look at syria where there are reports that some of the
12:20 am
wagner individuals at least have been put under house arrest or have been questioned by some combination of russian security forces. libyan in or, or sorry, in the history and intelligence forces. there, there were reports of some tensions between the russians, foreign ministry and wagner in the central african republic. but i think the, the general conclusion to that was that, that we've been fighting with in the russian government not between the russian state and wagner. and it makes sense that the foreign ministry might not be happy with the rule that the g r u and the russian military establishment is taking over control of a country where russia still has a diplomatic mission from the foreign minister as political scientists. kimberly martin, thank you so much for all that. thank you. the parallels have always been remarkable between donald trump and demand of the trump of the tropics diable. so now turns out that didn't end when they both left office,
12:21 am
both are now playing by legal troubles that threatened to end their political careers. and both in our his case, his hopes of reclaiming the presidency in 2026 appear to be over. also narrow has been barred from running for public office until 2030 for those top court ruled that he abused his power as of last year's elections. judges found that both in our i had used official government channels to boost his own campaign and spread and found in doubts about brazil's electronic voting system. was narrow, called the rolling a stab in the back. of all the western goals joins me now. he's a political scientist specializing on all things. brazil. welcome back to the day. let's dive right in. is this the end of bolton or regional? that's the big question. he's been somewhat of the line below the radar for the past weeks has been unusually quiet. in part some argue because he's been trying to mollify the courts and perhaps avoid the decision that the look toral court has
12:22 am
made today. that isn't working now the big question is, what will happen? i mean, he, and i've been just following all days of pro, both to nato channels, which are fairly quiet. he will still appeal to the supreme court. the expectation is that that will not be successful. and then the big question is, how will he utilize his tremendous political influence and very committed follower shipped in a moment ways you can all run for office. and the big question is, can he transfer his popularity to someone else? even though nobody on the right, not even his sons have a common touch, and that unique capacity to come across as sort of the common man fighting against the political elite. in the verdict, one of the judges said the facts were incontrovertible, but boston aro, we heard them before, already came out and saying this is a step in the back and brazilians. i imagine highly divided on the topic.
12:23 am
absolutely, particularly because most donado has, you know, systematically questioned the chords and said this is all part of the deep state has as, as salt to road public trust. in the airline. they look toral system and now this is the electoral court saying that he has abused power. now the. ready having voted for both sonata, of course, relieved, there's lots of people in the streets, people celebrating or but at the other end, both of our voters are of course so unhappy and some are saying that this is an illegitimate ruling. so the big question is again, how will he react? will he accept this his lawyer has already accepted? but um, you know, the question is whether he will speak to mobilize his followers. for now i think the situation, i think will remain calm. i think the, the risk of repetition of the political violence that we've seen in january and the capital is relatively low right now. yeah. this case we'll see in barred from
12:24 am
political life for some years. but other pending cases might actually land him in prison. and how dangerous a place is in right now or? well, i think they're, they're numerous cases that could under normal circumstances. landman, land him in prison involving the alleged genocide of indigenous people in the amazon. lots of corruption cases. his very controversial role in the fight against coal bid, where he emerged as one of the globally leading not signs deniers contesting the usefulness of vaccine, et cetera. however, even the current government believes that putting your most of it in jail, may be a problem. but because it will, but turn them into a martyr, and they actually mobilize these follow words increase polarization, which continues to be of the major challenge of result phases. so of course, the ministry of the judges may end up deciding that,
12:25 am
but i think interestingly enough, the president, i think, hopes that this will not be the case. and i tend to agree that a prison sentence would certainly make it more difficult of to overcome the profound divisions between the left and the right. but shape political discourse end result right now. as out of a single political scientist from brazil grade speaking to you. thank you so much for your time. thank you. from saturday on trackers in western jeremy will be able to take a dizzying stroll along the world's longest free hanging suspension bridge. the narrow foot path called skywalk, offers a birds eye view the surrounding countryside, but a warning those with the fear of heights will likely want us to your clear up to a 100 meters high. and 650 meters long. skywalk, germany's longest suspension bridge is opening to the public is and it is not for
