the the business, the w news fly from berlin us president joe biden says that ukraine is not ready for nato membership. the comments comes as fighting arrives in europe ahead of the annual nato summit, where leaders are set to debate, providing ukraine with cluster munitions and its prospects for membership in the western military alliance. so coming up

a battle field with no place to hide. trone operators on both sides of the premiums front lines keep close tabs on each other's positions while making themselves prime targets. w visits of drone command center in the printing and trenches and monsoon downforce trigger flooding and land slides in northern india. and there's more heavy rain in the forecast. and the 16 year old school girl leaves the book behind to make the 4th round at wimbledon. that story coming up later in for the i'm sarah kelly, welcome to the program. us president joe biden has damped into ukraine's hopes for a rapid succession to the nato military alliance. he said that that process can

only take place once precious war on ukraine has come to an end by day and is in britain the head of nato's once a year summit in lithuania, where the war will talk. the agenda, the printing president, followed him, or as lensky has been on a diplomatic tour of european capitals to secure support for his country's bid to join nato. but the alliance for main divided on the issue. as nato begins, the final preparations for its summits in lithuania. let him use the lensky has been on a diplomatic charge, seeking support for ukraine's membership popes in just a few days. zalinski met with the leaders of bulgaria. the check for public slovakia, turkey, and poland. o nathan mendez with the power to help secure backing

the ukraine's eventual admission. it's still a matter of political wills, just to find the proper wording and invite ukraine. it would be an important message to say that nature is not afraid of russia. ukraine should yet clear a secure time guarantees while it is not in nato, and that is very important now coined us president joe biden has arrived in europe ahead of the summit. before leaving, he told cnn that ukraine is not ready to join the alliance. and the keys will have to wait until the war is over. but he added that until it can join the united states is prepared to offer ukraine protection. similar to what it provides the israel you're going to see commitments by all the allies to continue to support their efforts to succeed on the battlefield. you're also going to see from all the
9:04 am
allies, a concerted unified approach to making it clear that nato is eventually going to be in ukraine's future. how far away that future might be could be clarified at the tools in vilnius this week. and earlier i spoke with dw correspondence, nick connelly and keith, and i asked him, what presidential lensky means when he says that he is hoping for the best possible result from the upcoming native summit? i think sarah, he was hoping for a commitment to joining off to the war ends. i think no one realistically here in cuba, expected membership as long as the battlefields continue see as much fighting as they have recently. but certainly a kind of commitment with dates or a roadmap to full members. if that was certainly something they were still expecting here. and it does sound goodbye. now, like, is there any waiting to talk about membership? once the fighting is over, is of the real fear here in ukraine, that once the rocket stopped pulling on key of the countries who might be more
9:05 am
skeptical about ukraine's membership will then come out and try and frank this out for as low as possible to avoid any firm commitments and maybe just keep it at the level of some kind of israel style security relationship where there's no commitment to actually fight for ukraine. utils people here in ukraine. they say this is not a risk bringing ukraine today to actually decrease the risk of any conflict with russia, leaving that i'm to get to you to that and leaving that kind of openness allows for improvements to tell his people in moscow that the west isn't really fully can we see frame that, and you present in the white house or a new economic crisis that in europe, which district the west from ukraine would allow him to actually achieve. his goal is here in this country that by actually making that commitment, that would actually put rusher off the good. it would make clear that basically ukraine is off limits. so there's certainly a lot of loving. so going on from the finance side and a real fear here that, you know, as seen from ukraine perspective, is going to be a kind of, lots of nerve on the west and part that for all of russia's sailors on the battlefield, there is still that residual fear of vs pilots escalate. nick zalinski also spoke
9:06 am
about progress in the printing counter offensive. tell us more about that. will that have been a achievements? certainly over a 100 square close to the territory has been regained, especially near boston woods. but the russians have had a lot of time to plan for this account defense old through last winter. they would digging in putting mine fields in preparing for this, that setting, you know, as fast as the kind of progress we saw last year. and part of that is also technology drones. india means that there is no real chance for any kind of surprised tactics. we went to see some joint operators in don't yet screeching. let's have a look at what they were. i would say one summer, rain storm life and this amazing became trenches, looks a lot like 12 to one that is until you turn the corner. we're in a forward come on to point just a few 100 meters behind the front line, ukrainian positions. so i'll just see you guys in the sky to coordinate up to the
9:07 am
re and infantry, but they're not the only ones. the depth along the sea to there's so many drones now that nothing goes on seem to keep on both sides. any movement. any attacks are going to be noticed, encountered before, you might add it to be able to see mostly on this, and it's possible that we have the advantage in some areas, but it's definitely wrong to underestimate your enemy, endorsing a particular goal. so we just heard a warning signal over there could be assistance that that means that there is russian drug or if i had the just trying to work out if this is a drawing that is about to coordinate not to read tackle the positions that we all here, whether it just happens to be flying through the space of alliance, kind of high tech fields, the space is not the nearly warning system you credit and so just have learned to rely on the problem the last time a common cause. you don't came all we none of the soldiers hold it fast. but the
9:08 am
dog coded the dog ran for cover in the fringe. and the boys are like something was up like this as a dog. the never normally hides and does auto. during that time he run our boys miners to get to safety and the drone came down without injury. anybody was that dog who bites everyone even have to box it, save their lives with human peace calls, blake door to go to when you step away from all the screens you would like this control room is just a shipping container. buried in a trench will be at one with satellite internet connection around the clock power from a generate to the you yeah, yeah. he's man and watching in real time is ukraine. artillery guided by the drones take same russian moment vehicles, many kilometers away. almost on the see,
9:09 am
the shell came in nearby just behind them to the 11th. so they're turning around to get away. it was really close. we almost got them that with so many drawings in the sky, keeping anything on the battlefield. the secrets become almost impossible. any progress there is too slow and painstaking and we're back with an economy and tape . so nick, i mean we, we saw it, there technology is really changing the way that this world spot is an well, certainly, and it's not just the expensive minute tree drones that all custom made. there are lots and lots of commercially available drones that are adapted either to watch the enemy positions or to drop the grenades or other improvised devices. and it's also about coordinating all the different parts of the ministry, so that in real time, everyone knows what's going on the alternative, the infantry, everyone is on the same page. and it just means that it is much, much boston. there's much less in the way of lack time,
9:10 am
but there are also very old fashioned weapons and now coming back and to use those below the country for some reason, days about the us didn't to send plus the bombs. the russians have been using them all through this for the pregnancy to a lesser extent, especially whether those dug in russian positions. we had lots of defensive kind of features, looked very deep. that lots of different mines to protect those positions of lots of ministry. people we were speaking to were saying that alongside this high tech stuff, it's going to need plus the bottoms of things as kind of brutal in that forces that to allow ukraine to break through those russian defense and to really make progress and economy and key. thank you and you cranes. leadership has called for patients. meantime, as it's counter offensive, makes little progress against the dog in the russian front. he hasn't been able to announce any major battlefields victories since it began the spring. but it says, every square kilometer is worth fighting for ukraine launched at the spring
9:11 am
offensive in june, after months of anticipation. but so far gains have been modest, even present below them. there is a lensky has acknowledged that the counter offensive has been slower than many had hoped to. everything is easy that some difficulty is because, 1st of all, all on his mind. that's we'd like to make things bigger gains that's smaller than what we have on these case. a look at ukraine's geography helps to explain why. for months the front line has been largely unchanged. it's thought ukrainian forces would try to push through russian lines in the south and east. one of the areas that has seen heavy fighting is around the southern town of or a cave. as satellite imagery show, the land is mostly patchwork fields and those fields are flat, huh. which poses specific risks for ukrainian forces trying to retake the land?
9:12 am
it means having to cross open fields which have been heavily mind and which are exposed to a fire from the air, as well as from russian troops hiding behind the tree lines. and beyond those open fields, ukrainians are encountering elaborate man made trench defenses that the russian forces had months to build. the defenders also had time to put up so called dragon's teeth to stop tanks. then there's the learning curve of, in military experts say russia has picked up from its mistakes earlier in the war and as adjusted its tactics to the conditions on the battlefield. sto, analysts say, ukraine's counter offensive is capable of making progress despite the unforgiving terrain. but it will take time and for more on this time joins now by anthony king chair of worst studies at the university of warwick's politics and international studies department. thank you so much for joining us. the
9:13 am
ukrainian counter offensive is a, it's a split week. how would you assess its progress as well? i mean, as you come to just stop to the right. you said it's slower, but i didn't see any. anyone who's been in full in the real close has been surprised by this. i mean, you've talked to the, rightly of the russians that amounts to filled up defensive positions and they're very heavily on the go very heavily in a very, very heavy altered rate. and that's covered by surveillance, drones. so discounts defense. it was always going to be difficult as a psych nobody has been surprised by the difficulties. yeah. perhaps some country. so there might be some initial um, increase of, of territory guiding but, but it was always going to be a slow additional fall. i want one of the crucial things also here is the relative full sizes. and you guys have going on, you know, about 850200000. but so the russian, so you kind of don't have massive advantage in terms of all either actually
9:14 am
equipment a load. they've got some good west and equipment now or crucially in terms of numbers. and it's those numbers that really are making sure that there is an additional brutal fraud going along on. so it's, it's disappointing but it's no surprise so, so let's dig into the reasons behind some of the challenges because, i mean we, we had heard in the months preceding this counter offensive value cranes, partners spending those months, arming it with fresh western weapons. fresh training for the forces in the counter offensive. is it a case of that just not being enough as well. it's difficult to say, i mean, they've produced an older quote. so they've got 12, a very good, well equipped to gauge with laughter, trying to challenge of trying with a brand tax exception with new lots of very systems. um, you know, is it not willing to set? it says no because the, the defenses as quickly as it could be, but there's
9:15 am
a certain limit, the amount of support that that's possible as well. so in terms of building at all, i mean, i mean it's, it's very impressive. a chief, none of the west and forces supported the credit is to rebuild and all me to the size of what it is, 850200000 strong. it's just not practical to rebuilding on the bigger than that in the time that they've had an inch of they've actually fighting dogs. there's a lot of those recruits have been trained, have been fed into the bottom, the bottom that i'm so the forces and the support is as high as it could be. there's a few weapon systems like ethic stains that have not been develop delivered but, but the practice of this is a very difficult more because i'm in the view of most people setting myself. it is going to be a long flight. um there's no, there can be no simple solutions here. the us says, we've had this mountain in the past week that it will send ukraine, controversial,
9:16 am
cluster bombs, it plans to do so. how do you see that potentially maybe turning the tide? what are the implications of the decision? do you think on the battlefield as well? the tide, but the point about costumes, and there's obviously a huge political, ethical, legal issue about them. uh, they're on the, you know, this, this legal restrictions in terms of their provision, especially in civil wars. but the facts in terms of tractor 20, where i enable, is by following these weapons that allows destruction over a large area. and i presume that what the americans new kinds of thinking, the trends were to use these weapons. the russians were to use them on them is that it will enable them to destroy a russian reserves, especially heavy altered or a heavy arm or as in those rear areas, enabling them to punch through some of the defensive lines. so a military level,
9:17 am
it's significant, but it's part of a wide package of more i us is providing. it's not going to be a one to weapon that's going to change the whole situation. but it may be part of a programs for the enables the counter offensive to move forward. thank you so much for joining us to share that expertise. anthony kang, expert on military tactics, frontline combat and urban warfare. joining us from the university of war break, we appreciate it if so, here's a quick look at some of their headlines. the un says that sudan is on the brink of a full scale civil war that could be stabilize the entire region. witnesses report more air strikes and machine gun battles a day after an air strike killed. 22 civilians of the city of vermont. egypt is due to host, the escalation talks press to down beginning on thursday. 6 people have been killed and one wounded in an attack at a kindergarten and china is quan gong. providence officials say that the victims
