india, how the wetlands surrounding coal cut that supports the fisherman and sir, as the city's water filtration system. the my name is melissa chan, thanks for joining us. french president emanuel mccall and is visiting the south pacific. the island nations located between the us, china and australia, are taking on major strategic importance for security and defense. the u. s. has long held sway in the region, but china is seeking to build influence there. and now france wants to offer its own alternative. in the pacific region, french president emmanuel mccaul, seen here visiting pop over new guinea, wants to car about a more significant role for france and global competition between the us in china

in the side pacific. the nations sparsely populated the tolls and volcanic archipelago is of the region become a geopolitical flash point on an earlier visit divided wide to without naming china . mccall warranted the treacherous sovereignty of small estates and meet the us china power struggling to build the order is completely destroyed by the willingness of new and failure on voters. jeopardizes old bates all these older ends. these new imperialism is the basis of a new company and isn't, let's be clear. as a french thought to jeez, clearly to build with you. the defense of this liberty of southern is a rich do us in australia have long health way in the region. but over the last decade, china is carefully built up, ties to west was raffles last year when solomon island signed a secure,

he packed with china, the work concerns beijing was building its 1st military base in the area. it could use this to press it sweeping contested claims over the side china c of this month, solomon islands, prime minister, amount of se, so good. barry traveled to beijing to open its embassy in china. 4 years after the 2 countries established diplomatic relations mccall, we launched frances indo pacific strategy against a backdrop of divisions among the western allies. in 2021. there was a big arrival over a council submarine contract with australia. campbell opted for the so called our cause subs, true partnership between australia, the u. k. and the us the us as ramped up regional diplomacy while beefing up its defense alliances. washington and camber are participating in the largest ever australia. u. s. military exercise. tell us mine sabre, france will also take part in the drills us secretary of state anthony,

blinking opened a new embassy in tonga. in february, the us reopened its embassy and solomon islands. after 30 years of his plans to open admissions and find a while to in care of body. 2 days after blinking left tonga, the chinese piece are costs. battleship dropped, their offering free health services to scramble for the site. pacific is picking up pace of the. joining us in the studio is d w 's asia analyst, clifford coon and clifford, can you tell us a little bit more about mcclung strip? well, this is a by france carving out its own little nation foreign policy when it comes to this region, which is now, as we've seen, is a scramble for this at pacific, at between china, into us and particular, he's taken name of what he calls this, this this new imperialism. and there's a little bit of ambiguities there. i think it's clarity and the china, but he's also suggesting that the us, which is also building up its presence in the region, is also guilty of this new imperialism. so in some ways it's classic french foreign policy in that way, but it's, um,
5:35 pm
it's very significant because it shows just how important the sy pacific is becoming. so it might seem obvious, because we mentioned that the south pacific is caught between the us, china and australia. but can you tell us a little bit more about the military thinking into why this area is so important? well, it's been a process, but we've seen where china has sought to, to win back a number of these nations in, in the region from supporting taiwan diplomatic. and they've succeeded with, with a number of them. and then they develop the whole building road and they should have, they've extended it to include the south side pacific. the belgian road has a kind of a jewel using that it builds up economic influence. but it also allows for g, a political influence. i think when china signed a police policing deal with the solomon islands, which also allows for stop overs for military stop over a stuff set, alarm bells ringing. because militarily, this is in the middle of a huge wave of, of water, which means you need stop over points. i'm trying to,
5:36 pm
can you support it's, it's claims in the south china sea. so it's a very strategic area of military has a lot of significance. it can also be used to interrupt traffic between australia and the us. it's, it's really an, a key position globally. now, europe has a pay paid more attention to asia in recent years, and i also can't help us think of nato a finally putting out a china strategy. to what extent is this driven by europeans, or is it really a lot of pressure from the americans on the europeans? i think it's being driven very much by the americans. there's a lot of pressure there um, on europe to do more within europe. there's a lot of pressure coming from the eastern european and central european states were obviously completely raffled by what's happened with the ukraine. but within the european response, as we can see, if with mcgraw's visit a little bit, and also with a certain i'm big usually a times from, from germany,
5:37 pm
add these countries which are very much about focusing on economic ties. i'm pushing their own interests sometimes against the interests of both the european union and nato, and economic and military terms. i think there's an attempt now to show a much more united front, and i think this may so address the statements on, on china has, has clarified a few issues, but the still, the still a lot of different opinions going around within the west. the western alliance on how to deal with china. now you talk about europe having mixed the strategies in this region. china has certainly been able to be more targeted and focused. we've seen china not just in the south pacific, but in africa in latin america. so i wonder, to what extent whether the united states and france in this instance are coming in a little too late to the south pacific region. yeah, i've been trying, has been very good at selling this message of being a supporter of the global size and is actually has gotten out there and it's built
5:38 pm
roads, it's built stadiums, it's both government buildings it's. it's helping with health care as we saw in the piece. so um, i think it's been very good at that. i think i think it's never too late to to try and win back a sentiment. i think there's a lot of goodwill there. so i think that they've been able to, you know, they will be able to capitalize on that, but there's a lot of work to be done. i think, i think in some ways my call is visited significant because he really does isolate some of these issues and he talks about, he uses the language in some ways the china likes to use about imperialism and things like that. so i think there's a deafness effort, and these things can change very quickly. it just takes a matter of stepping up development and other areas where that can be cooperation. i wonder, to what extent, i mean, do we have a sense of how the citizens of the south pacific view all of this. um, are they partial to one country over the other, or is it next depending on which island nation you're talking about?
5:39 pm
well, a lot of these countries have very strong historical links to the united states and in world war 2, you know, a lot of the bottles of the world war of world war 2 are fault there. and the japanese were eventually driven out by the us forces. and i think there's generally a lot of goodwill towards the us. at the same time, china has been delivering all the hospitals and the roads. so that's also going to help bolster their, their bid to, to gain influence their i think ultimately probably the um, the west has it has more goodwill because the things that things are trying to cons, offer certain guarantees that the us will offer. and a lot of these are democracies is maybe perhaps they're not so comfortable with the parents or authoritarian governments. so ultimately you would like to think, or you would imagine that the you, the west has a, has an upper hand, but strong. china has made a very strong case for his position in the region. clifford clinton and thanks so much for joining us in the studio or

the wetlands just outside of kata. india have for generations been a source of food and livelihoods for people. it also kind of acts like a giant natural water filter, helping clean 60 percent of the city sewage and saving the city over at $64000000.00 us dollars a year in that process. according to some estimates, our report explains how that works and also looks at the threat of fast urbanized ation around this eco system. the spread plans are lifeline for india mega city. of course. they provide more than 11 causing tons of fish each year. likelihoods of thousands of fishermen depend on this ecosystem. the network of small water bodies also had grown around 50 percent of produce sold in cause good us market. but this is not the only advantage of the direct line. the out also

fixing this to each of the city of more than $14000000.00 residence because of a plan that's going to need to go get the concord. but the reason be this very unique because the sewage of the city is being naturally treated by that is what it is acting as a naturalist. the sewage treatment plants at no cost. definitely using sound like dining my groups on tooth and for a big down the pollutants in the water, condemn, and inside or filtered to the water as they move to the red dots. the production of energy becomes a source of food for the fish. and the naturally free to risk border is also used in the surrounding 30 and vegetable funds. but this valuable system is under threat from urban position. the growing population means a push from the property developers to acquire the wetlands. st. grossman is one that and these websites of northwind by the government. a 95 percent
