as the city's water filtration system. the my name is melissa chant, thanks for joining us. french president emanuel mccall and is visiting the south pacific. the island nations located between the us, china and australia, are taking on major strategic importance for security and defense. the u. s. has long held sway in the region, but china is seeking to build influence there. and now france wants to offer its own alternative in the pacific region. french president emmanuel mccall, seeing here visiting papa and new guinea wants to car about a more significant role for from some global competition between the us and china and the side pacific. the island nations sparsely populated, the tall and bold kind of archipelago is of the region become

a geopolitical slash point. on an earlier visit divided by 2 without naming china. mccall warranted the treacherous sovereignty of small estates made the us china power struggle to build the order is completely destroyed by the willingness of human failure on voters. deeper dive, things is, will be obeys order and this is new. imperialism is the basis of a new company and isn't, let's be clear. and a french thought to jeez, clearly to build with you. the defense of this liberty of southern is a rich to us and australia have long health way in the region. but over the last decade, china is carefully built up ties. the west was ronald's last year when solomon islands signed to secure. he packed with china. there were concerns basing was building its 1st military base in the area. it could use this depressed and

sweeping contested claims over the side china see this month, solomon islands, prime minister amount of se. so give our a travel to beijing to open its embassy in china. 4 years after the 2 countries established diplomatic relations mccaul re launched frances into pacific strategy against the backdrop of divisions among the western allies. in 2021. there was a big arrival over a council submarine contract with australia, camera opted for the so called alkalis subs. true partnership between australia, the u. k, and the us of us has ramped up regional diplomacy, beefing up its defense alliances. washington and camber are participating in the largest ever australia. u. s. military exercise, thomas mine, sabre, france will also take part in the drills. us secretary of state, anthony, blinking opened a new embassy in tonga in february. the us reopened its embassy in solomon islands . after 30 years of his plans to open admissions and find

a while to and care of body. 2 days after blinking left tonga, the chinese piece, our hospital ship dropped their offering free health services to scramble for the site. pacific is picking up. pace is joining us in the studio. is d w 's asia analyst, clifford coon and clifford, can you tell us a little bit more about mcclung strip? well, this is a by france carving out its own little nation foreign policy when it comes to this region, which is now, as we've seen, is a scramble for this at pacific, at between china, into us and particular, he's taken name of what he calls this, this this new imperialism. and there's a little bit of ambiguities there. i think it's clarity and the china, but he's also suggesting that the us, which is also building up its presence in the region, is also guilty of this new imperialism. so in some ways it's classic french foreign policy in that way, but it's, it's very significant because it shows just how important the sy pacific is becoming. so it might seem obvious,
6:35 pm
because we mentioned that the south pacific is caught between the us, china and australia. but can you tell us a little bit more about the military thinking into why this area is so important? well, it's been a process, but we've seen where china has sought to, to win back a number of these nations in, in the region from supporting taiwan diplomatic. and they've succeeded with, with a number of them. and then they develop the whole building road and they should have, they've extended it to include the south side pacific. the belgian road has a kind of a jewel use and dotted builds up economic influence. but it also allows for g, a political influence. i think when china signed a police policing deal with the solomon islands, which also allows for stop overs for military stop over a stuff set, alarm bells ringing. because militarily, this is in the middle of a huge wave of, of water, which means you need stop over points on trying to, can you support it's, it's claims in the south china sea. so it's a very strategic area of military has
6:36 pm
a lot of significance. it can also be used to interrupt traffic between australia and the us. it's, it's really an, a key position globally. now, europe has paid more attention to asia and recent years, and i also can't help us think of nato a finally putting out a china strategy. to what extent is this driven by europeans, or is it really a lot of pressure from the americans on the europeans? i think it's being driven very much by the americans. there's a lot of pressure there um, on europe to do more within europe. there's a lot of pressure coming from the eastern european and central european states were obviously completely raffled by what's happened with the ukraine. but within the european response, as we can see, if with mcgraw's visit a little bit, and also with a certain i'm big usually a times from, from germany at these countries which are very much about focusing on economic ties . i'm pushing their own interest sometimes against the interest of both the
6:37 pm
european union and nato, and economic and military terms. i think there's an attempt not to show a much more united front, and i think this may so this, the statements on, on china has, has clarified a few issues. but the still, the still a lot of different opinions going around within the west. the western alliance on how to deal with china. now you talk about europe having mixed the strategies in this region. china has certainly been able to be more targeted and focused. we've seen china not just in the south pacific, but in africa in latin america. so i wonder, to what extent whether the united states and france in this instance are coming in a little too late to the south pacific region. i can try has been very good at selling this message of being a supporter of the global size and is actually has gotten out there and it's built roads, it's built stadiums, it's both government buildings it's. it's helping with health care as we saw in the
6:38 pm
piece. so um, i think it's been very good at that. i think i think it's never too late to to try and win back a sentiment. i think there's a lot of goodwill there. so i think that they've been able to, you know, they will be able to capitalize on that. it's, but there's a lot of work to be done. i think, i think in some ways my calls visit is significant because he really does isolate some of these issues and he talks about, he uses the language in some ways the china likes to use about imperialism and things like that. so i think there's a deafness effort, and these things can change very quickly. it just takes a matter of stepping up development and other areas where that can be cooperation. i wonder, to what extent, i mean, do we have a sense of how the citizens of the south pacific view all of this. um, are they partial to one country over the other, or is it next depending on which island nation you're talking about? well, a lot of these countries have very strong historical links to the united states and in world war 2, you know,
6:39 pm
a lot of the bottles of the world war of world war 2 are fault there. and the japanese were eventually driven out by the us forces. and i think there's generally a lot of goodwill towards the us. at the same time, china has been delivering all the hospitals and the roads. so that's also going to help bolster their, their bid to, to gain influence their i think ultimately probably the um, the west has it has more goodwill because the things that things are trying to conte offer certain guarantees that the us will offer. and a lot of these are democracies as maybe perhaps they're not so comfortable with the parents or authoritarian governments. so ultimately you would like to think, or you would imagine that the you, the west has a, has an upper hand, but strong. china has made a very strong case for his position in the region. clifford clinton, thanks so much for joining us in the studio or the wetlands just outside of kata. india
