9:03 am
the clean up continues. neighbors drain mode from each other's homes with soldiers drafted in to be up relief efforts near the city pulled off. we are happy, we can help people and do you t. that's all that matters. and or we can do such a task ahead is massive because bridges have collapse and roads has been damaged including fresh walter and leading efficiency the leading all of this down. it's really and that's why the small country is cold on other nations for help germany ascending prefabricated bridges fronts has offered machinery and croatia is sending trucks. the president tells us that's only slain. i am happy that we are part of european union and you'd opinion and there are a lot of funds slovenia cannot to get it. you know,
9:04 am
what we do. we do not have enough money to repair all the damage. we are aware of that fact we do have courageous people hardworking people, and we hope on solidarity. i know that all the damages could not be then, and we are used to start from scratch 0. we the sun shining overture. now locals don't fear more. flash floods for no thoughts of ortiz are still keeping watch because up in the hills, the risk of land flights remains. a short while ago i spoke with the w as rosie bare challenging file that report. she gave me this update from the flood zone. well the clean up is well under way, volunteers are working round the clock, but the situation a many times is really still pretty dire. as you can see behind me here, we're just seeing piles of modern a real impact on people's lives on their belongings. now many of these times are still really caught off, for example,
9:05 am
that tell you that you saw on that report. the only way we could get there to fill not was with a military escort arrived, some pretty precarious road, some which we saw on the side collapse bridges, diamond power lines. and that's why helicopters are still having to bring in supplies. so people really still looking for help trying to make this work. and we've been told that tens of thousands of people are still without access to fresh runny walters. there's still a really dire situation here, but certainly lots of efforts underway to try and clean this up so people can start at least thinking about how to rebuild their lives after all this disruption we heard in your report, how different european countries are promising. quite a bit of page to support. so being in his cleanup effort. what is the european union promising rosie of the what's the video is a small country or 2000000 people in the population. and they've certainly said quite clearly, as we heard from the president that they need help. they activated the european

union's emergency response mechanism. and they called for assistance. no countries hopping coughing up medias, asked for emergency a team. so people to come and help with these relief efforts. it's also asked for helicopters for excavation equipment for machinery, and we're expecting european commission president phone to lied to your institute video today. she's like me to make more 90 minutes of that kind of bi lateral help coordinated by the european union. and i think so these will also be looking to hear some of the items of funding support we're expecting of underlined to address this will be in parliament as well as to visit some of those hardest hit regions and speak to the people that are most effective and of course, for them any support, any further support in europe, you need to cut off or will that simply can't come fast enough just briefly, rosie. uh, what is it that slip any it needs most right now. well terry, i want to say there's no shortage of goodwill or offers of help. we've seen people
9:07 am
coming from across this country from regions that are not as badly hit to try and line up to volunteer with their space with both as a fresh bolts. are we? so one way or telling us almost move to tiers that nobody asked for money, there were no questions asked. people were ready to help, but of course all that good will creates a problem. there is not even the infrastructure really to match all these offers and volunteering with the needs that, that there actually are. so we noticed lavinia is looking for more trained people on the ground. that's what they've asked the european union for. and of course, there will be questions about the longer term reconstruction because of the impact on jobs with factories destroyed. that is something which has not yet been c and something people are certainly that i've spoken to. very concerned about it. they say they're just living day to day at the moment, rosie, thank you very much for now. the w is rosie bird showed that a while extreme weather is causing havoc across europe at the moment as we've just heard. so the news been severely affected by intense flooding as habits neighbors,

a people's homes and schools that is no air conditioning in all parts of the building. the government is trying to give some emergency. so i should say the governments because also the regional governments are in charge and not only the national government, they've tried to deliver lots of bottles, especially to people who have to be outside waiting for a bus for example. and uh, like i said before that i'll watch our trucks going to tones that are in the states of emergency. and also, besides those short term measures that are political discussions, for example, about the sustainability of the industrial farming, which is the major watch i consume us here in spain, especially for products like i've called us and mine goes then phillip, thank you very much. that was our correspondent young philip shots in sylvia. a sketch up on some of the other stories making headlines around the world today. leaders of the amazon rain forest nations,

9:13 am
which many people are asking. yeah, in nigeria data, various reasons why they and i didn't government touch the soft peddling on the issue. the government is facing a lot of pressure from different angles using media, treating type vision on the general public. nigeria has suggested the shaft board as the huge at the bottom most of those submitted, the president unfolded the institutions of using military and publishing. it gives me jared because of the long term relationship between the idea and the general public data and the print shop groups, the business of who is the side to organizations, one in the government again. and then then the children are looking at an idea of this is in, i get in, this is not good at the to try and i talking to general public. so that was why and i did it has to come out and seek is not. and i did in the military,

general public is that just kept on fun. why she's at home, you rely on this account is a cannot do any fee in terms of minute 3 ways. thank you very much for your reporting there. that was journalist waste interest in nigeria is capital a boot you to a ran where the country so called morality police have been stepping up their enforcement of laws mandating the wearing of head scars for women. many iranian women have been shunting the huge jump in the wake of last year's mass protest, sparked by the death of a woman accused of violating the official dress code. now, with the one year anniversary of that uprising, approaching authorities are keen to show. they are still very much in control of video circulating and social media, apparently showing a plain clothes agent harassing an unveiled woman. and then a day later he runs police spokes person announced police patrols would be
9:17 am
established across the country phone. this task successfully. these police officers will deal with those who unfortunately ignore the consequences of not wearing the proper head job and insist on this. so being the norm. and in addition to warning them that if they disobeyed the orders of the police forces, best legal action will be taken off and they will be referred to the judicial system as a wider if you at least since 1990 police units enforcing mandatory who job regulations has controlled the streets of iran. then in 2022, an unprecedented women like uprising it began after that scene police force arrested 22 year old gina mazda, many, allegedly for not wearing a headscarf properly. she died in their custody to the uprising did not spark beagle changes in the dress code. the many iranian women have since been very
9:18 am
visibly following their own rules. and i almost do not buy scarves and all the quotes any more. i have not for an behaved job for a long time. i have gone without or 2 places that are considered ordinary, but not being val. there has made them feel special. it seems that the control over payments hit job has slipped from their hands and they are doing whatever it takes to gain that's power back. iranian opportunities are now not only immune to retain that control with st agents. according to a fresh report by rights group, amnesty international. they're also increasingly resorting to surveillance technology in their crack down. i received the warning text message once after removing my head score while driving the 2nd message stated that my car would be impounded systematically. then the 2nd message arrived, my friend,
9:19 am
the 9th there in the car, both without a job on a one day trip. it was a terrifying, felt as they could impound her car, and it needs that in june. iranian speak, media released this video. it shows women with uncovered hair being intimidated. but the video also claims that our story, these gather biographical information on offenders by using face recognition technology. officials have also said they've shut down tourist attractions, hotels, restaurants, and shopping centers for not enforcing the job on their e mail patrons. some young people may continue to resist their head job, but the older people who rely on their salaries will be coerced into varying head scarves, again with the one year anniversary of g. now my so i mean the staff approaching in
9:20 am
september observer, st. iranian women will likely be finding more ways to make their voices heard and to make sure they are safe to that report by dw special correspondent abraham. she joins me now in the studio and we heard some of your conversations with randy and women in the report. how worried are they about the morality police tightening their grip? i think what a lot of them said to me was that, you know, the morality piece was never really gone. they had just kind of, you know, largely pulled back after these protests that we saw. the unprecedented protests that we saw in september of last year. and ever since then, because the backlash against the morality police was so strong on the streets of women has had started to feel comfortable walking around the streets with their hair uncovered. one woman told me that there was a sense of solidarity now on the streets that if somebody, you know, went up to a woman to tell her, you know,
9:21 am
cover her hair to cover her hair. people would very quickly gather around that woman and try to defend her and try to sort of, you know, push back that person telling her to, to, you know, where the mandatory should drop. so i think there's, you know, there's a sense of a newly found sense of freedom on solidarity between women on the streets. and now they're worried that, you know, with the global attention of not being as strong on iran as it was in september and the aftermath that now the authorities in iran are seeing this as an opportunity to really clamp down and to reinforce, you know, these, these laws on the street. so as for about the face identification technology that are, that authorities are using in their crack down. how effective is that? i mean, they certainly, you know, as we saw in that video in that report that was released by state media. they want to give an impression that it's everywhere and that no one is safe and that even, you know, and perhaps you know, some i or private situations like in
9:22 am
a restaurant or at a, at a gathering somewhere. they might be caught. but we don't really have any solid statistics as to how prevalent these technologies were. something that one woman told me that i thought was interesting was that, you know, she feels that the stories don't want the morality police to have that, you know, that violent character on the streets that, you know, creates a lot of outreach, both in and outside of the run and so there, you know, now perhaps resorting to be more like subtle forms of violence, likes for villains to try and re establish their authority and to make people again, feel like they're not safe and that they can be themselves on the streets. we're approaching the 1st anniversary of the death of gene. i'm us, i'm in need of our, our weeks can we expect more mass protests to break out around that? but it's difficult to tell because obviously that was a very special kind of, you know, moment in time where this woman who had come from this other part of the run to
9:23 am
visit to her on became a symbol for so many women. and then the protest themselves became, you know, about so much more than just the, you know, the mandatory for a job. they also became about personal freedoms and evolved into mass anti government protests. so that was a very special circumstance. and obviously the crackdown has a, you know, really intensified since then. there's also been executions of protesters and so on . so it's difficult to tell if we're going to be able to see the same scenes again . but the grievances that iranian people have, there are still the same. women still don't have freedom and a lot of the other economic grievances and food have grown grievances are still there. and it's a very emotional time for, for iran. so we'll have to watch closely how people commemorate this anniversary is thank you very much for your reporting or special correspondent. a person to ireland has bid farewell to senior shanita or connor thousands flocked to the
