to recognize where exactly it was funny. i've learned a lot of our culture history, all their travel extremely worth a visit. the dw news live in berlin, another tragedy in the english channel. 6 people are dead after a boat carrying migrants, cap sizes, authorities, condemn people, traffickers for overloading the craft. also coming up the desk told from hawaii

while fires climes to 89. it's been deadly as well. fire disaster in the west and more than a century. and the death toll is expected to rise. plus england, lionesses advanced into the semi finals women's soccer world cup the american evans team. thanks for joining us. 6 people have died and dozens have to be rescued when a boat carrying migrants from france, the united kingdom capsized. it's the latest tragedy to unfold and the english channel as dozens of small migrant bows, trying to cross the dangerous waterway. the u. k. is conservative. government has introduced controversial policies aimed at cutting the number of people attempting to make the crossing the rescue cruise from england and france,

which to give uh to brings the volume is a shore more than 20. we're taking here to the u. k. port of dover. we've medical teams helped a school those who could walk on to land, but cyril were in a critical condition. for angel stars, he's also series dozens of people back to the city of calais. some were taking strength to hospital fillings. they were in trouble. there's always sea sickness and the boats are simply overloaded. they over though them so they can't move. the last boat we came to was just too full about the we did for some of the smaller boat the migrants were traveling on was one of hundreds crossing the dangerous streets of water. in recent days to the pool was all g u, a civic jim. if we more than 6 victims today, it is the fault of traffickers and criminals who sent children and adults to the

depths on these dangerous maritime routes. so those was it vicky so and agreed to by hundreds of millions of heroes in an attempt to reduce the whole was sick to be housed on this badge. those plans sold when legion is bacteria with detected on board forcing or far as he's to evacuate the v. so some down the strategy would've worked. in any case, ultimate, the people are not going to be this incentivized for making a small bed crossing because they're likely to be placing the bulge personally and smoke. boat is terrifying. i expect to be dangerous. if you're prepared to do that, then a bank is not going to display the number of migrant channel crossings of this year . stands at more than 16000, but the 1100 people arriving in the past week a lot. it's joining me now is tom brooks, he's

a professor of law and government and the during law school in the united kingdom. welcome to the w. so according to border officials, we've seen an increase in the number of people trying to cross the english channel just in the last couple of days. why is that? well i think that you typically see a lot more crossings happening during the summer and, and, and it to the, the order. then you do the beginning of the years. this is kind of pattern of, of more happening now in august. and that's the end of september. so when you receive, in past years, in government efforts to try to stem the tide of slowed things down has clearly not worked well. you say they haven't worked. what should french and british authorities been be doing differently in response to the increase of these dangerous crossings as well?
10:05 am
i think there's a few things that should happen. i think, you know, one thing is noted in the room for the place, rightly where people pointing the finger at the criminal games more needs to be done about that. the u. k. government, as has passed recently passed a new law that, that aims to effectively punish those who make the crossings, but not those who are behind the crossings, the gangs who coordinates and organize them. i think there needs to be a lot or that is done about that. but the other for the major factor is the government talks a lot about trying to turn people are making these journeys, but it doesn't really talk a lot about the causes behind what is going on in, in part. we've seen this despite this, think this, this growth is small votes, as all happened after the u. k. left it's returns policy with the you. so it means that since for the last few years, people coming over can no longer be returned,
10:06 am
or at least not return very easily. back to france or elsewhere on the confidence. where is that was possible before, and i think this is a change in the law that has been exploited by some of those games. and i think that's something that needs to be addressed originally as well. well, we should also mention it's of course not just the english channel. we're seeing similar tragedies also off the coast of tunisia in italy also just in the last couple of days. in fact, we know that this year has been a specially deadly for migrants trying to get to to europe. has the european migration policy failed, as well as the migration crisis, as it was called in 2015. and we haven't seen anything like that. quite since the terms of the overall numbers, bye bye. see it. it's about 10 percent or so of what it was back bad. however, there is the number of tests, percentage of deaths has, has increased,
10:07 am
has become effectively more and more dangerous, even if the overall numbers are not completely out of the range of past years. i don't know if there's a lot that needs to be done here. i mean, one issue is the continuing evolving situation. the other crises that drive people to look for home. so swear, we've got new problems happening issues and niger subsidies and others continuing issues of the cast and those, those folks who were returned in the, in the channel were apparently scan uh, nationals, a lot more. it needs to be done to these different sites, and that's a very difficult thing to manage, requiring a lot of coordination. that was tom brooks, professor of law and government, as durham law school professor, thank you so much for your insights. pleasure. while the death toll from wild fires that swept through the hawaiian island of maui,
10:08 am
over the past week has risen to 89. it's now the devil is wildfire disaster in the united states for more than a century. it's feared that the number of deaths will arise further as sniffer dogs search for and town homes 1st and the remains. thousands of people have been left homeless by the fires. donations are arriving from across hawaii and from the us. mainland. people have been dropping of food water, including at emergency shelters with the fires, mostly contained attention is now shifting to the response. hawaii is attorney general has opened an investigation into how authorities handle the disaster. resident said they received no warning. many are still trying to come to terms with what happened really right now, the official never.

i think in my, in my life what i have imagined that we would have something like this catastrophe of an equal assessor. i would like to find a piano family, coloma family and really i guess family suits is 3 more, 3 days. and now that everybody's looking for them, only been here for like 4 or 5 years. so i, somewhere between and like a lot of the people i lived with didn't think it would happen. i've seen a lot of wildfires growing up in northern california. i was just like and the smoke turned black. i was like when you got here, journal is not going. nathaniel is in hawaii and has been following the story for us. i asked him to tell us more about how people are coping in the aftermath of this devastating fire. a. people are still in shock here, it really is been a soul crushing experience so many people have not only had family there,
10:10 am
but i have lived there and i was talking to a friend this afternoon through the restaurant he worked in was gone. then he also was a little bit further in the rental unit that he had stayed in for years was also gone to it's and just we're trying to make sense of what is exactly happened and trying to understand the what is the possible future here is the worst over are the wildfire is now fully under control. yes, for the most part and the what's happened is that the storm that led to so many of these high winds that really, you know, it's just exacerbated the problem here, caused the inferno, you know, has passed. and so this was the thing that was the unexpected part. it was that that storm was so far away that we didn't think that we were going to experience any damage. we'd had a storm just recently. that was even closer, but there was no damage. but we're finding out that so many reports have been made already that hawaii really was in a huge danger for wild fires. but sadly,
10:11 am
those reports weren't heated. it's yeah, there's also been some talk about the governments in adequate response to this disaster. what have you been hearing from people about that? so unfortunately, hawaii was caught flat footed the lieutenant governor who was in charge at the time because the governor was out of the states and said why he would so very unprepared for this the to lead officials that would have led the blood. the evacuation were also off island at the time, so there was a real absence of leadership and to point that they were no sirens. why he has a very well developed early warning system when it comes to he has tourette's from sue. not these are other storms, the sirens that most people would have listened to and let the evacuation weren't sounded in behind. that was journalist knock on nathaniel reporting for us from hawaii. thank you so much. thank you. let's get
