4:02 am
of a day after the presumed death of its getting pretty goshen is lot of the protein has described the head of the voc than most and re group group organized and so much on moscow against him as a complicated man who made some serious mistakes. really, all the rest of the world presumes posting or the heads. we ask how if got a precaution managed to stay, i live so long. i'm fly around the world with a power and imputed say, now he's go was happens to the world or some of the dictators who relied on this businessman to stay in power. i'm feel gail in balance and this is the day the regarding this ada sion contest based. first of all, i want to express my sincere condolences to the families of all the victims. it's
4:03 am
always a tragedy to can. these, as we know, has an increase in russia depths and dubious suicides and falls from windows 10 stops to a new mind moving us, we don't have anything to do with this situation. i think everyone understands invoice. also coming up the focus of donald trump's legal battles or returns to the state of georgia. what's going on in this country? is it by the way, once would that me for a perfect phone call? well, i want to do is this. i just want to find a 11780 loads. welcome to the de alotted me approaching has broken the silence of the planning crash that's presumed to have killed the leader of russia's wagner. most of the
4:04 am
group, the russian president, expressed these condolences to the families of the victims and describes if got any precautions as of mine who made serious mistakes. but achieved results for gordon had been one of pollutants most important allies until june. when he met an armed rebellion against moscow, his military leadership, national authorities say he's got any precaution, was listed as a passenger on a flight, but crashed on route for must go to some pages. but then people about this aircraft when it crashed and the table region northwest of moscow, all of them 7 passengers and 3 group members who reportedly killed russian aviation authorities. se wagner groups chief of gave me play. goshen was on the passenger list. it really depends whether this is actually the boss or somebody traveling under the name of you. can you click on sure, because we know that precaution used and yes is a rather people who assumed his name in order to travel as part of his security
4:05 am
measures in order to obfuscate his probable plans and to conceal where he actually was in saint petersburg, revolts of precautions that have sprint and supporters have been gathering to pay tribute to the fall. and he ro, goshen was born in saint petersburg, where he later met vladimir putin and became a close ally. in 2014, he found that the wagner must and then regroup, which took it some gruesome tactics. the countries around the world. and is accused of commenting wall crimes. in molly, the central african republic and syria theatre. the wagner group also played a major role in russia out on ukraine, up in capturing buffalo and june to goshen stage, to move to me again, specials military leadership. it was shock live, and many observers assumed the off to the move. his life was in danger including us
4:06 am
president joe by the new president, the other reactive i don't know. do you think? i don't know enough. meanwhile, russia has started a criminal investigation into the plane crash. let's explore this is katrina doc see who is an associate director and associates the fellow with the transnational threads project at the center for strategic and international studies . she joins us from washington. welcome to the day given about rebellion in june. people asking, well why was if getting pre goshen still at large, apparently at liberty to fly wherever he wanted a. i think a big part of this is that proven was going to take some time to think through his
4:07 am
options and to think through strategically what happens after production is gone. if you were to eliminate promotion right away, that leads to immediate term. while within the wagner groups network, it leads to a lot of uncertainty with the partners. the foreigner had been working with particularly those in sub saharan africa, that are extremely dependent on wagner to preserve the security of their under machines. and so my interpretation is that by waiting these 2 months is it you who in has had time to carefully calculate how he wanted to do this. notably, if the reports are true and false for goshen. and dmitri, the ken, was his 2nd in command leading to board number, if both were indeed on board the plane and were killed in a crash. so it has eliminated 2 birds with one stone here. additionally, this has given him time to ensure that he has control over and a plan for that wider wagner network will carry military if you typically think of
4:08 am
as well as these other companies all linked back to production. understood. so if we presume the russian state data august, right best, and we also presume that it's a very public nature and was also a warning up slash demonstration. i believe. so i think that particularly given all of the attention that came onto in back in june when the mutiny happened, all of this criticism that he was showing weakness, i think that needed to make a strong statement to deter any future rebellion any future. but trail by other oligarchs or others that are close to him in the russian government and military by essentially executing them for goshen via this claim rash, notably on provisions own private plan that he regularly use this for transportation. just like most other oligarchs and russia regularly use their own
4:09 am
private plans for transportation to and was demonstrating that. so if you cross him, you will face the consequences. and this can happen anywhere. this can happen in russia. this can happen on your own private plane or you normally feel safe and protected by your wealth and power. this was a very clear statement from who and to ensure that no one else tried to follow and promotions but stars. ok. so let's look at some, some of what's going on in west africa that you alluded to that we stay in that. so the fog networking we community john says in the saw how region all those military rulers now wondering who's going to keep the main power, or as you say, as, as vladimir putin already lined those ducks up. so i think that there certainly are a lot of questions swirling around. there have been reports that various sources linked to governments in places like molly and the central african republic are expressing some discomfort, some uncertainty. that said,
4:10 am
in terms of public statements, particularly from the leaders in these countries, the government is projecting sense. d and they have communicated with the kremlin, they've expressed to put in that they are grateful for the services that promotion has provided and remain open to working with russia and was fog and our whatever form that will take this ties into once again, the fact that wagner was largely there in the minds of these autocratic museums to provide versioning and security to serve as qu, perfect function to ensure that they remain in power. so it's important for them to project to this sense of continued stability. the continuity of service is also important for us to make clear that that's happening. right? that said, we don't yet have evidence that that really is what's happening. okay, give do, is you actually, you go there a bit before me. so we presume that the, the, the money i'm, these are very lucrative operations in west africa. we presume that the poaching
4:11 am
has effectively cut out a precaution, the middle man and that money now is flowing into the crime in and out in the moment. those operations continue to yes. so there's operations, as far as we know, are continuing. there was some flow of profit already to the kremlin, from their operations. i think to and certainly has more direct control now and will likely institute some new form of high level leadership in place of for goes in and who can and anyone else at those higher levels that remain loyal to them. i think it is important to note that even though those top 2 players have been removed, we still have mid level leadership across the wagner network. we still have troops and personnel operating on the ground full in the military capacity. and in these areas, resource extraction and information focused businesses,
4:12 am
and they are the ones who largely have these working relationships. they have the experience and the knowledge on the ground. and it's that operational infrastructure that's going to be important for mosque, how to maintain, so that they can continue to reach these benefits. and so i would expect that as we see new leadership come in, we'll try to 3rd, russia. we'll try to keep that operational side flowing as steadily as possible so that it can continue to bring in these benefits that as related to have been very lucrative. so there must be worries about who they are loyal to. yes, i think that's going to certainly be the biggest challenge moving forward for poor, and there was a lot of loyalty to for goes and among the troops involved in or indicated in part by the number that continued to follow him. including going to bella roost after the meeting in june. and i think the biggest challenge now as new leadership said
4:13 am
steps in, we potentially are looking toward a rebranding of the wagner group. the biggest challenge is going to be ensuring that those mid level leaders and all of the personal on the ground, remain loyal to the institutions that have been built and remain loyal to the kremlin. as opposed to acting out against russia against 2 ends goals and a lot of that will come down to help him and is able to manage and spin the narrative around for goes and stuff as a final word. then about president losing himself and he has a warning. ukraine is going badly, an armed rebellion that marched on moscow. he comp leave the country to stretch the stuff with well latest for fear of being arrested for war crimes. is it wishful thinking to think that he's on the slide or i think i think it's certainly wishful thinking to expect that we're going to see some major downfall coming up imminently for proven. however, i think that there are
4:14 am
a wide range of weaknesses on display. this is something that we've all been paying a lot more attention to since june. but even before that, as before, and ukraine has dragged on becoming a long board that russia certainly didn't anticipate. it certainly doesn't have the capacity in the long term to continue to maintain at high levels as they faced domestic fragmentation. as they've dealt with this challenge from the wagner group, i think there are a lot of weaknesses already on display under foreigner is indeed going to go through some sort of transition period. now after it has basically emerged as the cornerstone of russian foreign policy. particularly in africa, i think that there are going to be a lot more weaknesses. there were going to be a lot of places where western policy makers and regional actors were concerned about the impacts of wagner. really have space to act and try to offer alternatives
4:15 am
. and really try to make clear the homes that wagner is doing and the failures that we are likely to see during this period of transition. it's very clear. thank you for joining some outlining that for us. katrina doxey from the center for strategic and international studies in washington to be asked whether you georgia prosecute, having the case against donald trump has proposed staffing his trial on the 23rd of october before the president and a team co defendants that charged with conspiracy to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election for donald trump? it was just another one of his perfect presidential moments. what's going on in this country? is it, by the way, once would that me for a perfect phone call. this was even better than my perfect call with you for a number that call. that was a perfect call. this one's better. this one is more perfect. i challenge the
4:16 am
election in georgia, which i have every right to do. what for georgia, prosecutors and the men and women of a grand jury. it was the start of a criminal conspiracy. they've slipped the former us president at 18 others with 41 charges over there, attempt to overturn job items when the 2020 presidential election. while the results were still being certified, trump was recorded, putting pressure on georgia officials to find a new votes. well, i want to do is this. i just want to find a 11780 loads, which is one more that we have. many of his co defendants are accused of legitimately claiming to be official electors. and so i config election certificates in favor of donald trump. they're all being charged under the states rico laws. the same laws used to prosecute organized crime that's
4:17 am
useful. this is fred smith who is professor of law at emory university in atlanta, georgia. a welcome to dw professor, so that we have a preferred apropos to trial dates in the georgia case, the 23rd of october. at the same, awfully quick, especially with such a scrolling case with so many defendants. what's likely to be the thinking. and it does seem and quite quick initially, the proposed date was in march of 2020, for the former president has proposed a date in some time in 2026. what seems to have changed is that one of the defendants can chest bo, i saw what's called a speedy trial request. so every defendant in the united states, under the constitution as a right to a speedy trial. and given that these defendants are being tried to gather the fact that one of them solve
4:18 am
a cd try speedy trial seems to have prompted the district attorney to seek this earlier a date in october. and my that indicates a split between the defendants. it does in the sense that you have the former president who's seeking a date years from now, right. and another who seems to want this over as quickly as possible. and so there doesn't seem to be agreement among these co defendants about how quickly they want this process to go right under the fulton county chase. so though it's about a vote, it's about a max attempts, has to be an election. mr. trump and his 18 co defendants have been charged and to be circled, re co lowest, which deal with organized crime. so why is the prosecution going down that path? yeah, so in the state of georgia, i, when can make out a racketeering case if you have a group of individuals with a common purpose,
4:19 am
a common scheme, especially if one can demonstrate that that common purpose is a corrupt purpose. and what one looks to is whether or not these individuals engaged in a pattern of illegal activity on the roads to carrying out that particular purpose. here, the prosecution has alleged a wide range of illegal activities, both statements to government officials like the former secretary of state, or the current secretary of state law statements to a house senate subcommittee both statements to a house judiciary committee as well. um favor waged that in violation of georgia law, the former president listed in the secretary of state of georgia to violate his vote . and in georgia, that is a crime to solicit a public official to violate himself in georgia. it's a crime to pretend to be a government official that one is not. in this particular case, you have
4:20 am
a group of se collectors who purported to be the electors for the state of georgia . and prosecutors alleged that they knew that that was not correct in georgia, forgery as a crime. so these posted statements, the solicitation of you, prosecution points to this and say this constitutes a pattern or a pattern with the purpose of subverting around a $1020.00 election. so we have a potentially kelly vice criminal trial of a former president who is running for election again. how does the fulton county stop vis from turning into a circus? yes, so in georgia, as a matter of routine, the vast majority of criminal trials can be televised. court cameras are allowed in the court room, and the judge in this particular case has already proved a motion to allow cameras in the court room during this arrangement in september for example. and so that makes this case different than any of the other charges
4:21 am
that he's facing, where cameras will not be present in terms of how to avoid circus. i ensure that the district attorney would love to know the answer to that as well. right? we're all seeing the images from the fulton county jail in the past few days. um and uh, she is going to, i assume i try to keep as much decorum and as much normalcy as possible. i'm doing a process that given that stakes is anything but mr. trump has a busy old yeah, i had 91 cases and 4 in diamonds. well, potentially fighting a presidential election, a close officials in these 4 indictments likely to co ordinate time tables because he can't be in 4 places at once. kind of are sure. so even if they're not formally coordinating, they certainly going to be closely watching what the other is doing, right? someone can't stand trial literally at the same time, right? so at the federal level, the federal prosecution has sought a date in february,
4:22 am
and for at least one of our trumps a set of federal charges right here. right, right. we've learned that the district attorney is setting an october date, which i frankly seems early given the sheer scale of the charges here. but they certainly will be looking to each other just as a matter of logistics and closely following the dockets. and what about the prosecutors in the georgia case? a funny willis in the u. k. what i'm from and here in germany, prosecutors tend to be anonymous figures, not so much that in the us where they seem to be forever giving press conferences. and it says here, this particular district attorney was elected. and just a few years ago, actually be a long term. i can come back. that said she is a long time presbyterian. 10 years ago she brought racketeering charges against teachers in atlanta. is readers who conspire together to change students test
4:23 am
scores to make the school district look better than at that point. in fact, was she currently is bringing racketeering charges against a rapper and a group known as uh, as ryan. so he, so she's a very experienced prosecutor, especially when it comes to this type of charge for talking to your thank you for taking us throughout the clinic. i professor fred smith from emory university in atlanta. thank you. thank you. the, how did you try it? which has been mocking it says the 2nd independence day, it declared independence from the soviet union on the 24th of august 1990. 1 of the ceremony in case presents the landscape pay tribute to the sacrifices of ukrainians, and you said that today's country would win the war against russia and on the farm

that's unique. i'm sure there are kids who would stop crying in that situation. so which one is to provide suite c? a will not damage because you need to. it wasn't hospitalized preparing for this is area and when the war started . okay, cool. most which listed we had explosions at 5 in the morning. one is what we did not understand what that meant. but after 5 or 10 minutes, the doctor came with a nurse and said, we should pack because the wall had sauces. and that we would probably go to the basement from the involved. anita, how does this area that day is spent the 1st week of a baby's life and that hospital based fighting was approaching the city. so they stayed in the improvise, bump shelter,
