seen in public since costing has bothered on saturday. he survived a brief military coup station 2019. but as people too had soldiers on the streets of the capital labor bill, this new challenge will test the staying power. once again, earlier i spoke to him both items a little, not on analyst with africa, risk consulting. and i asked him if the recent elections were a tipping point after decades of one family rule. so good afternoon. it is seemingly so the bumble family has been in power since 1967. and as a report indicated, t um the invalid president audible was interested by soldiers for me before he took over 2009. and this was his 3rd election that he had one instance taking power . he has been these with domestic discontent. there are also been a suspect,

the phenomenon for the country face, they had little stuff. and then there's also been a lot of power to the country for middle income century, but then there's a 33 percent arguing and there's a 20 percent unemployment rate. then there's been the fact that the bundle found all these years quite heavy over the access to reset the rates that this, these benefits have been approved to the majority of the population. so those people cheering for the military. um, we saw can we understand that as widespread public support for this group and it could be interpreted as such. the survey full done by october ometer has each had stipulated that 66 percent of the nice people surveyed said that in the event that the elected leaders are losing power. they would not mind the military taking over to rectify the situation. to look on it as well as where a train busy,

whereby even the multi party alexis are carried out on a regular basis. that is, every 7 years, the institutions of democracy, the law office of rigid by the view of the family, which happens where the various society, the, the lady political regime be the military and security apparatus as well as the phenomena social affairs. so that's kind of the over all of these parts of the society, overtime teams where we, with these most recent elections, we also see it in the context of a wider regional trend news. there's who just last month, for example. do you think what we saw happened there has in bold and the military and go on to try their luck? are definitely leaving the different regions. the different concepts you can come to really didn't realize that there is the confusion of sorts of military who were in the military leaders in addition to whatever person either since they have. they

are feeding up the grievances of the population which are unhappy with the governments which are unhappy with the corruption which are unhappy with the fact that the proceed. bennett is a democracy, not really to the rest of society. so, considering that not much has been done to counter these military clues in west africa, it is the means, it seems that the government need military establishment has taken advantage of it . as use that this current state of affairs to attempt to take over a power and gone. and you have a sense of where things go from here. are we looking at potentially a transition to true democracy or will this result in years of military rule as well? what i've always said is that the issue of religion who is that it is not, it doesn't exist in perpetuity. the military leaders understand that at some point they have to try and transfer power just to be a rule and re, if it's impossible as an order. the situation are present is very fluid. we don't know why the corporate status of the, of the ongoing cool. um,

it seems that is as if it's members of the republican guard and the republican guard is led by general race thinking about who it was causing. so we don't know whether it is family dynamics, whether it's a desire to preserve some aspects of the resumes and just set aside the most undesirable aspects. or it could be a scenario where they are fines and actually re establish the whole some political associates and novel configuration of the country. so right now we can't tell but then it is a very, very fluid, very unexpected situation. i've had a couple and drawing further and comparisons to the qu in new share. we saw after that military takeover. people waving russian flags, questions about how much influence russia would be exerting there? do you expect to see similar and gone in? no rush, it has. do you agree with the exception of the central company company rush, it has very little influence in that region. france have been people who are

arriving most influential. it's an arsenal power in, on most of the political indeed viewed within the last you in the offices as well as in the business that we can honestly all have very close ties to france. so it will be very unlikely for there to be any sort of a right. so corporate rough, especially when you consider that a lot of the andrews here not necessarily towards a security situation, there's no decrease in the security. there's no particular terrorist, cris dot one, but rather socio economic grievances than you know, and it's worth the fact that the family has been in power for over 60 years. so in that regard, i think that there was to be easily international the hours. but then there wouldn't be some sort of opening towards russ who thank you so much for joining us on the news about for the enlightening interview. that is great and say greatly on

our political economist now with university of cape town. thank you very much. the same problem, the russian officials a se ukraine has launched its biggest drone operation yet with attacks reported across several regions. i wonder on stripe reportedly targeted the western region of scarf, near the border with a stony and lot for you. it's governor said ukrainian drones hit an airport and damage several military aircraft. their precious military also claimed to have forwarded a ukrainian naval attack on the black sea, destroying 4 boats, caring up to 50 paratroopers. the claims could not be verified. and for more, i'm now joined by david handling a military, technology, rider and consultant, specializing in defense technology. thanks so much for taking the time to speak with us. do we know how much damage these latest drone attacks have actually inflicted on russia? they're saying several transport aircraft have been damaged. well the, the russian,

the initial uh, response as wise was that all the drawings and then shut down and that no damage had been done. but we do know from some sources and from pictures on the same uh that discount does seem to have been to uh, oil, $76.00 drones bolts, uh, which were at least damaged. one of them was in plains. uh, so that's a significant amount of damage. um, particularly because these are only small, cheap drawings, costing a few $1000.00 in natural costs. tens of millions. it's a mess of a symmetric as homes which on this kind of thing will really get russia problems. i mean, yeah, absolutely. um no, uh, such drone attacks on russia. um, is this not the 1st time we've seen it happen? happen? why is it so difficult for russia to defend against thrown attacks to um, basically because the drones own on their radar or the met forward to the owner. truly, they have no defense plans come with drawings. they have very involuntary defense

system, but it's built to deal with ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, high speed aircraft. it's not designed to deal with smooth, slow moving objects typically, right? all tends to filter and things like that out because they get mistaken for goods. so they know literally not be able to see what's in coming. then you've written a book showing just how effective swarms of small drones can be in the case of ukraine. do you think that that could potentially play a significant role in ukraine retaking territory? oh, certainly the ukrainians all very interested in developing swimming drug and technology at the moment. we're certainly seeing them use thousands of these uh small kind of calls, the drawings on the battlefield control proving very effective against russian tanks and elementary. and i think we will save them starting to use warming lightroom that. and i also play into these longer range of tanks as well. so we may see coordinated to tanks using dozens of drawings at the same time,

approaching from different directions, avoiding or taking out a defenses and picking high value targets. so yes, i think that's likely to be something we're saying going forward. i've also heard claims from russia that ukrainian drones could not have flown such a distance without help from the west. what do you make of that? what kind of help do you think they're referring to their or it's quite possible that they did have help with telling good things because that's the difficult thing . although it's very easy to have a small drug with the range of several 100 kilometers. you need to know where it's going to land the car into that. so they may very well a pad, assistance with getting precise information, for example, about where and then across because pumped on the wrong way. thoughts, they didn't necessarily have that. so that is a russian claim. the russians are always very eager to find that nato is directly behind things. that's not necessarily the case. and in terms of russian defense do think we're going to see them developing their defense systems to better deal with

this kind of attack. you might think so, um, thoughts, insights, the russian advice in syria came under attack from small brains in 2018 and suffered some damage. and they've had a whole series of attacks since then. and they've really seemed quite incapable of learning. it's notable that during this will one of the american come on this or not, that the soviet, like i say, a defense systems work pretty well so long as they will mental ukrainians rusher may have problems with training, with competence or with policy. but certainly the defense is seemed to be very slow to control and the threat to well thank you so much for joining us with that analysis. that's a david handling. motor technology writer, consultant, specialize in defense technology. we appreciate your time. thank you. meanwhile officials and ukraine's capital keeps an overnight for roger of russian missiles and rooms as killed. at least 2 people, the cranes military side,
