the worst storm the hit florida gulf coast in a century. the winds weekend as the system moves north, but it's left destruction in its way. the hello, i'm terry morrison. good to have you with us. we begin with breaking news from south africa. at least 64 people are dead and another 43 injured after a fire broke out in the multi story building. in downtown johannesburg, emergency services say the place is now under control, but they fear the death trouble could rise as the recovery operation continues. is not yet clear what caused the fire, which broke out in the early morning. it's believed the building was being used as a shelter by homeless b as well. for more, we're joined now by

d. w. 's diane hawker, who is in johannesburg. done what more do we know about this far? well, as you mentioned, the dis, toll has been rising over the wanting terry. since the early hours of the morning initially it was thought to be less than 10 people that were killed in the fire. but we've now recently learned that the dates totally up to 60 full emergency services all going through the building floor by floor, retrieving those bodies, and hoping to find any one else might still be alive. however, with the level of smoke that is the they are not at this stage finding any more people who have survived those we have survived have been taken to hospitals around the area. we know that at least 50 people have been hospitalized. some of the young children that building was actually occupied by some families and as well as you know, people who work in the, in the city, in the janice big in the city. they are a lot of buildings that all consider the banding buildings. but that is the case
9:03 am
with landlords of list the buildings and other people have taken them over and start charging nominal rates to people who loved the. and you'll often see families living in those kinds of situations, especially those who worked in the, in the city. this is a, a holistic fire with more than 60 people that confirmed at this point. do the stories have any idea, diane, what might cause this blaze at this point and not saying it what may have caused the blaze. i think it's still too early to tell since this fire broke out in the early hours of the morning. the emergency services once they've kid, that building will then start with the investigation to determine the cause of that fire mountain. and what about the reaction of authorities when the fire broke out? did, were they able to get on to the scene and in clear the building fairly quickly or did the fire burn before quite a while before anyone came?
9:04 am
well, initial reports are that the community members themselves initially started to try and help people coming out of the building and they are a member of a high rise buildings in that area. and soon afterwards, emergency services arrived already in the early hours of the morning. so they've been, they since around 2 am and they've been working since that time. we've also heard that the other organizations like the gift of the gibbs, which is a philanthropic organization you had. some advocates also come on the scene to assist with the firefighters to offer them aid and to help the community members. so i think the response was quite quick. however, the blaze moved even more quickly through that building. and often times with these kinds of abandoned buildings or buildings that are not in the best case, you'll find that they will be poor rather removal for example. and that also exacerbates the situation in these types of diane,
