damaged or affected. a lot of people are going to spend their 1st night in the cold . and uh, it does get very cold despite it being uh, september strenuous my son saw me in morocco. now a summit of the g 20 group of major economies is wrapping up in his allies, announced plans born in vicious rail and see cord or blinking the middle east and europe. the project is aimed at boosting trade and growth and countering china's belt and road initiative. climate change was also on the agenda. leaders there back a drive to triple the world renewable energy capacity by 2030 and the african union also joined the g 20. the block of 55 countries now has the same status as the european union. g 20 membership reflects the rise of a cotton and whose young population is set to double by 2050, making up a quarter of the global population. the g 20 issued
7:06 pm
a joint declaration despite wide differences over the war and ukraine. the text calls on all states to refrain from threatening or using force to gain territory. now dw chief international editor richard walker has more from the g 20 summit in del so our lives here in tele, or of course, on the passages in the final lead. just exploration to focus on the ukraine war and picking out the differences between this use declaration and the declaration that passed last year of the 2020 to bali summit. and his criticism coming from some quarters in the west. that there was too much compromise. so this is declaration did not call out russia explicitly is responsible for the invasion of ukraine. and instead keeping to more general statements of principle. that's is that all states must refrain from the threats or use of force to seek territory like resistant
7:07 pm
against the territorial integrity of independent states. and of course, you don't need a ph. d and rocket science to know that that is referring to russia's invasion of ukraine. but the fact that the explicit language is nothing that is being seen as a watering down of the west and position now or sales of german sounds. so has been speaking to the media here in delhi, and he said that he was satisfied with the declaration. but he certainly seemed pretty luc woman, whose comments on it. he wasn't really trying to sell. this is a major victory. and i think this finds out that the west really true were willing to compromise because they didn't want to see india fail on it's tough to come up with a final declaration. west impact is a really trying to draw closer to india at the moment. partly because of the war and ukraine, partly because of the challenge of china. and i think that is really what drove the west to this kind of degree of compromise. now for the us view of development as you 20 in india, we turn it to do you have you start to correspond to abraham,
7:08 pm
who is in washington a, a we just heard from richard. the language on ukraine in this communicate is weaker than the west. would have wanted, how could this impact the u. s. lead support for you, chris? absolutely. president joe biden was going into the summit, hoping to riley countries that have so far been reluctant to support the western position on ukraine. and that includes the host country india and now we have this sort of a look warm, a statement that really falls short of what diplomats american diplomats were hoping to achieve. so i don't think this will really affect, you know, how us allies like the european union view, a support for ukraine. but what this does is send signals to countries that have been reluctant to support the west of that. you know, the us and it has this force to compromise on uh, on its language and on it's position because we are increasingly living in
7:09 pm
a multi puller world where uh you know, countries like india can and, you know, try as they say to be a non aligned, i think this will also william play into biden's image and perception here internally. we know that the ukraine issue is a issue that divides republicans. and since, you know, the us exit from of gun it's sandwich was seen as a huge failure of this administration divided administration has really been trying to present ukraine and its support for ukraine as you know, and example of u. s. leadership on the global stage. that the united states is still able to stand for its allies far, far away on a different continent just 2 days before that g 20 summit, a biden are released and an, an ad does meant air in um, you know, states that are not that are not uh, typically democratic and that shows focuses on his trip to key if it was
7:10 pm
around the 1st anniversary of the war in february i was there myself. and i remember, you know, there did the message that the administration was trying to send with that visit the president visited in a country, a war zone that is not controlled by the us and really presenting him as the strong man there standing by american allies and now, they're coming out of the summit with a, you know, a position that is, you know, not what the united states wants. and so that's very, very likely to play also into biden's perception here at home, where, you know, we're heading into an election here and there is a perception that he is, you know, sometimes weak, perhaps too old for the job is not able to hold his own and so we're going to have to watch closely how this lukewarm language at the g 20 is also going to play out of here at home. so far, that's very domestic in the us. now looking over to the continent of africa,
7:11 pm
the african union is becoming a member of the g. 20 out of this summit. this is something that joe biden has been advocating. why is that? in his interests me? absolutely. i mean, the joe biden has also been trying to present the united states as an alternative for countries that have been increasingly positioning themselves as voices for the global south. but india, the host of the g 20 and also a china. and so a, you know, he has a, he did ask for aid in african union membership already last year. and so this is, you know, this will be at least presented by the bite and administration as, hey, look. but we want to work with emerging economies. we want to work with countries of the global south, and we have some, we are supporting your membership rights w, special, corresponding abraham in washington. thanks very much for that. right. and now trying to some other stories making news right now. the local elections are
