a player on the list that the world cup final space, top football official, luis would, will be all those files to mounting pressure and resigns boston tennis news. now about yogurt, which draws level with margaret ford on the record. equally 24 grand slam titles after victory in the men's open. final the i'm quite richardson. thank you for joining us. more than 2400 people have been killed in the biggest earthquake to hit morocco in more than a century. rescue where is are searching for survivors in the high atlas mountains, south west of mar cash tremors were felt as far away as southern spain. rocco's came, mohammed has announced 3 days of national mourning for these rescuers. every 2nd accounts, several people are believed to be trapped in the ruins of this house. no one knows
1:02 pm
if any are still alive. neighbors are hoping for a miracle. let's see those. i don't know what a man is our neighbor now, he's lying together with the others. somewhere in front of the ruins. his wife was heavily pregnant. rescuers already found her dead in the regions surrounding the town of amusements, an hour south of marrakech by car officials reported a 1000 people dead so far. but the village is deeper, and the atlas mountains have been hit even harder roads there are fairly navigable for 8 vehicles. this family has been homeless since the earthquake and is that the name and the command we've been out here since the 1st hour? i just that i'm, our house is severely damaged and that isn't the safe to enter into the, the dams go, we're worried about ourselves and our children. then we still haven't gotten any help. so in this she has, we're still waiting to see a lot of patients lives in a village even deeper in the mountains. he shows us videos of the quakes, destruction he's worried to death, toll will skyrocket. okay, let the, but i lot,
1:03 pm
i look, i'm on the high out getting social numbers and refer to 8 dead so far that it could because you know, there are many more the high um and then the problem is that it never does so many haven't been pulled or blue is yet to some know it can lead to such as your specially in this area. schools on the where there are a lot of victim a lot. a mean i didn't know where literally off for headlight is it could be a jump. the higher back in a museum is rescuers keep searching. but there's still no sign of life from beneath the revel. onlookers can only hope that their neighbors won't be the latest names on the list of the dead. it has now been more than 48 hours since the earthquake struck. i asked caroline, hold from the international federation of red cross and red crescent societies. if the main focus of her teams is still search and rescue has been showed us, the absolute focus of priority right now is search and rescue because that window, unfortunately, will start to close. in the coming days we,
1:04 pm
we now know that people are spending this the day outside those that have survived . i'm really the prior to is finding those that are still alive under the rubble as well as pointed out in your uh, annual piece that access to some of those most remote mountain villages is still not clear. uh, the, the, the american army have managed to play some routes, but there are still many places that we as an 8 community have not managed to reach yet. yeah, given the difficulty of that access, i mean we're hearing of entire villages and remote mountainous areas that have been varied. are they being left behind at the expense of prioritizing people in more densely populated areas? i think the priority has to be a to reach people wherever we possibly can. and, and there's a, there's a huge awareness that those people are buried. it's purely a matter of access. the logistical challenges are reaching, those bouncing villages shouldn't be underestimated. we know, even in normal times,
1:05 pm
that's the the roads and narrow and difficult to navigate. and at times like this, when the quite will of no doubt damage the infrastructure. this will be incredibly difficult for the authorities. yeah. now close to 2 and a half 1000 people are known to be injured. many of them seriously. how do you provide medical care to so many people need to get, stay in queue as will be prior to, as i say, is the search and rescue and finding those under the rubble. but at the same time, really looking after those survivors, there are many of them, of course that have got some very severe injuries, severe head injuries for instance. but we also know the broken bones is a common thing in this situation. a partner on the ground, the american red crescent, is certainly providing 1st aid to those people and make shift tents and make shift medical facilities as well as prioritizing those most urgent cases to the medical facilities that are still operating. we know that psycho social support and mental health trauma at this time is also key and also an area where the american,
1:06 pm
my presence that in the prioritizing uh, all of that is happening and coordination with the government on the ground. and the next electors are incredibly busy, providing support to those that have survived. and in your assessment is the moroccan government doing enough to help those. indeed. i think it's important to recognize that this is a huge disaster. 6.8 on the roots to scale under a fairly shallow depth would stretch even the most well for pad. ah, so i think that the american government is doing everything that it can, i'm really coordinating, well, that responds, we know overnight. that's a bilateral support from full particular countries, has been accepted and allowed into the country to really intensify that search and rescue. and i believe that the american government is really trying to coordinate this a efforts in order to get the, the most effective, the outcome from it. well, thank you so much for taking the time to speak with us today on dw news that is currently hold from the international federation of red cross and red crescent

societies. we really appreciate your time. thank you to well, germany's foreign minister, angelina bare bulk, is making a surprise visit to keith. it is our 4th trip to crane since the russian invasion, more than 18 months ago. her journey by overnight train from poland was kept quiet for security reasons. the trip is being seen as a show of german support in the midst of keys, ongoing counter offensive in the country. so we have our correspondent max center in ukraine and asked him what message the german form mr. is bringing to keith? i'm sorry you said it already. this is the 4th visit of german foreign minister. i don't a bab up to uh to ukraine since the beginning of the full scale invasion. and she is a staunch supporter of ukraine. i like the last time she had visited, such as after the liberation of bookshelf or too hot of keith during winter time in january. the main messages that germany stands by ukraine site and will continue to support ukraine and help it defend itself. she touched on
1:08 pm
a few additional points um when she came in, when she came here this morning. um one of them just to point out a few, one of them would be the work session. um she reiterated that to your session. um ukraine becoming a member of the u. s. a. uh, is it necessary concert geopolitical consequence of russians division and she also know that the accession coxa could start soon, so i believe it's something ukrainians will be very happy to hear though that is still a very long road. and another very important point is the situation regarding energy security. energy infrastructure is it's summer now it's still late summer, the weather is still very nice, but it's just going to change very soon. the temperatures are going to drop. and if the last year's anything to uh, to go by, um there might, there, there's a likelihood that the russians will step up their attacks and energy infrastructure and, and attempt to um, to deprive ukrainians of, of energy of lights, of water and heating. and they have partially successfully did that last year,
1:09 pm
though they did not achieve their goal to bring the pot wasted the ground. but the creditors did suffer, and the german 4 minister said that germany would help with humanitarian assistance and help with providing energy to ukraine. so as you have these macs sandra reporting from keith, well, german plans to build a vast european air defense network or, and i one step closer to becoming a reality. defense ministers from germany, lafayette, and a stony i met in bavaria to visit the german manufacturer of the iris t air defense system. they are locked in estonia, signed an agreement to purchase the weapons, which are already in use, protecting the ukrainian capital q. 19 countries have already joined the so called european sky shield initiatives. and d, w. c, political editor, metallic us noise in bavaria where that deal was signed. she told me more about the iris, the system and how it can protect your p in cities. well they actually essentially
1:10 pm
already all is what we're told they are protecting keys and, and that is seen as one of the secrets to success and sending off all sorts of area low tax. basically it is one combined is a vehicle that can then control several essentially launch pads at for surface to air rockets. we could which can also adjust their targets once they are fired. and that's each and a radius from up to 40 kilometers is so you can actually defend a medium sized town with one of these systems key if we're told has to. and also we're told there's no way we can verify this. that is said to have almost 100 percent success rate in defending civilians, but also important to the infrastructure. and we will stay with us. i want to take a quick look at the bigger picture for a moment. let's see how the new security architecture has changed since russia's invasion of ukraine. good from keys to chrome,
1:11 pm
a tourist. russian missiles have devastated to ukrainian cities, destroying thousands of homes, killing civilians, and forcing their opinions to ask themselves whether their air defenses strong enough to keep them safe wherever you check in europe. because of the cold war, we haven't invested enough money in this capability. germany wants to lead the way in changing that with the, with the european sky shield initiative, we're bringing together european states to join key increase protection against ballistic missiles, cruise missile syndrome. and this is what it could look like. the 6 iris, the surface to air rocket systems would target short range missiles. doesn't patriots? systems would be used to intercept medium range missiles. and to top it off the, our 3 system would defend against attacks from outside the earth's atmosphere
1:12 pm
providing vast cover. so far, 19 european countries have signed up to berlin's vision. others like engineer friends have not. they want to push ahead with their own initiative the aftermath of yet another missile strike. and ukraine is a reminder that as europe debates it's air defense needs, not every country has the luxury of time. so we can't we, we have germany leading the way with these guys field initiative. but as we just heard in that report, there are other you countries pushing their own initiatives. how big of an issue is that? that's exactly what i asked during defense and this, the boy is the story is today. and his answer essentially was that everybody's invited to join at any time they so wish that these systems, these alliances are not moved should be exclusive. yes, there is a different take on how urgent the issue is,
1:13 pm
how urgently the hardware should be in place. and that is pretty much the german approach. that's also why germany went ahead and commissioned the arrow system from israel as well as well as you as patriot systems. the friends want to see their own mistrial system at the core of this. but there is a strong emphasis from the durham inside that this can be integrated in the future through combined structures and software, and that this is an open invitation tool. well, thank you so much for your reporting. that is due to his chief political editor mikaela casa, this i can bring you up to speed. now, with some other world news headlines at this hour, south korean media are reporting that north korean leader kim jong and has departed for a summit with president vladimir putin in russia. meeting follows reports that russia is looking to buy a munition from john young. it is the 1st time the north korean leader has left the country in 4 years. russia claims that president who is united russia
1:14 pm
party, has won local elections across 4 occupied areas of ukraine. keith and his allies have condemned to the poles and the illegally annexed regions. as a sham, preliminary results also indicate a clear suite for putin's party across russia, an allegation of vote rigging. for those present, louisa now so little of the sylvan has back tracked on a personal assurance that the russian president would not be arrested if you travel to preserve for next year's g. 20 summit, president clinton is under and arrest warrant from the international criminal court . lou let now says the decision would be off to pronounce judiciary. thousands of people joined to march against racism and fascism through the cypriot capital of the coasts. yeah. the demonstration is a reaction to a series of racist attacks against migrants in weeks. among you states, cyprus has the largest number of asylum seekers compared to its population. and officials in libya say at least 115 people has been killed after severe storms
1:15 pm
caused major flooding, rising waters and walk roads and stranded people on rooftops. authorities have declared a state of emergency closing schools and imposing a curfew. and heavy rains from former typhoid high play have current continued to cause a major disruption in southern china. the city of shen gens all the heaviest rain since records began. and the neighbor and hong kong cleanup efforts have been gone after the worst storm and 140 years caused serious flooding in the territory. a how are you to safety? 5 fi to is buffalo waist high flood waters to rescue residents from this building and mounting city in southern china. areas across the region have suffered severe flooding over the last week. as to why fi and high quade dumped record levels of rain full across several provinces. was

for to be honest, has quits. his resignation follows growing protests and pressure after he forcibly kept spanish players any other most so on the lips that us the teen celebrate of their world cup final. when we protest criticism and calls for him to go, the ways to be all is finally decided. it's time to quit. we're beginning his decision to step down in an interview on british tv, with broadcast to pay is morgan who posted some of the exclusive chats online. it was mother's initial. yes, i'm going to hang on. yeah, i'm going to, yes, go say kind of continue my work. what was the final moment fee? was it talking to your family, your dad perhaps? yeah, my, my, my father made, they'll tell us i spoke with with them and he's not, they know he's is not. i goes to in the one me, some friends really, really close to me. and they say to me, louis, now you have to focus with y'all as himself also took the social media on sunday
1:18 pm
nights, posting this documents on the platform ex, setting out his reasons for going and confirming hello. so it'd be resigning as one of your wife is vice president post headed by a message in spanish saying i will defend my own a. i will defend my innocence. i have faith in the future. i have faith in the truth. woods, the maybe it will be honest, is defined tone throughout this scandal. the one that started 3 weeks ago as the spanish women's football team celebrated the world cup final when a case on the lips with spanish plaid jenny hmo. so a case which i'm most are says she did not agree to. oh boy, yeah. the me did know in the days and weeks the follows. we'd be all as did apologize of the double down on his claim. the kiss was consensual, deep in response, 81 spanish players,
1:19 pm
including all 23 of the world cup winning squads down tools. as all around him, the choruses of criticism, loud in spain. hunger strikes by booby honors his mother and a judge who needs hometown soon followed as to the suspension by fif uh, well footballs, governing body. and then just last week, spanish federal prosecutors accused the 46 year old of sexual assaults and co action. all parts of a case that could now lead to a formal cool, it's investigation. and ruby all is facing a possible trial. an even j. o. so it's now been 3 weeks since that case. and the scandal that followed. i spoke earlier to summer hunter, a sports journalist and presenter,
1:20 pm
lia tv. and i asked her why it took her to be either so long to step down. i was think for one thing, he's of mine who has a rather large ego and someone who really seems to believe that he did nothing wrong with that certainly has been very consistent in the lines that he's been using. the tone that he's been using so defiantly for the last 3 weeks and consistently saying that he's not going to step down that he refuses to do so. and he's telling the live that he really believes he's the victim here. and that jenny and also gave the consent, which he has repeatedly stated otherwise. and so i think he really believes she would be able to fight this and i think it was. and so recently with donated most of last week, falling an official complaint to the criminal courts to investigate this as a potential criminal act of sexual aggression and coersion as well. and also in, in discussion that a how with his daughters is father. i think he finally realizes, writing really is on the wall here and it kind of woke up to that reality and realize that there really isn't any one left to support him. his allies have turned
1:21 pm
their back on him. the whole world is pretty much against him. especially across spanish society and there really was no other choice left. it really was untenable . and so even still then the statement that he released, he still does things that he wants to prove what he believes to be is his innocence . so he hasn't really actually taken ownership for anything as of yet. so he did step down, but really he was pushed out. yeah. and the fact that we see a defiant tone, even in this resignation letter, does that tell us about what's likely to happen next? or do you think you'll go quietly to? i don't think you'll go quietly per se. i think he understands the real scope of the seriousness that is now facing him in terms of the potential consequences. mean there are still various investigations going on. so you have the t h e, which is the administrative court in spain. they could still suspend him or bond him from football anywhere up to 2 years if they deem that to be necessary. c 5
1:22 pm
also have their disciplinary proceedings that are still ongoing. he is technically still suspended for the next $75.00 days or so, but they could also decide to suspend him or find him altogether, some simple anywhere up to 15 years, which is what the maximum mandate says whenever it comes to their protocols. but the young dots, there are some very serious consequences that he could be looking at here when it comes to the criminal charges. because he could be if found guilty face with anywhere from that a fine to up to 5 years in prison. now normally anywhere between 3 to 5 years is given out to more serious cases, but we're talking about potential active sex regression as well as colors. and so if it comes down to heavy, he could end up in jail. if however, it's a sentence of less than 2 years in spain, there is a law that says if you don't have a criminal past, if you don't have a criminal record in your 1st and essential, you don't actually have to serve the sentence. you don't have to go to jail prison, but he still may have to pay a fine. so i think he's really kind of wise and up to how serious this is looking
1:23 pm
for him still coming from so many different angles. so he may be a little bit quiet, but i do suspect that he is going to court at to defend himself, as he is repeatedly said he will do. and as i say, he continues to maintain this belief that he's done nothing wrong. i won't take a look as well as potential wider societal implications here with all major protests over the past few weeks over this scandal. do you think it's likely to spark a wider and longer lasting movement around women's rights and staying as well? it's already happened. it's already started and i think this is only going to continue to fuel the fires, so to speak. because the, the movement really has picked up a lot of speed, a lot of pace. more people have been joining us, move it, it was already a feminist movement. in place for the last few years, but really it has become almost like a synonymy over the last few weeks in terms of people really routing together. not just to support jenny or most of what the support women's rights as you so correctly points out. and so people feel as though this is not enough. this is only
1:24 pm
the beginning. so yes, and this will be honest, has gone jorge. the head coach is gone, but more has to be done. more has to continue. there has to be structural changes within the federation which hasn't happened as of yet. and of course, that can be a reflection of wider society and not debate. still very much ongoing in terms of needing to have this. so for flexion recognizing the problem and finding ways to, to fix the problem going forward. because yes, there is very much a present issue when it comes to sex and such any wider society and culture. and so people are having this uncomfortable conversation that they didn't want to have before. people are opening up to these ugly trees that nobody wanted to admit before. and now we went to being hurts and to be taken most seriously. so hopefully it will continue. well, thank you so much for taking the time to speak with us on this really important issue that is samara hunter, a sports journalist, joining us from our slona. thank you. sign for some tennessee is now and novak
