flows through the sky, starting september 20th on dw, the . this is dw news live from berlin, around release as prisoners and exchange for billions of dollars. 5 june, us are raining, and citizens have been freed, after years of detention for alleged spine around a great to swap them for access to frozen funds. and also on the show 19 concern over the integrity of libya's dams. after dam collapses, killed thousands in the countries east, the u. n. warranty to more structures in the country are under massive pressure and

could crumble as well the problem. finally, as welcome to the program, we start with breaking news because a long awaited prisoner swap between around i'm the united states is under way. these are the latest pictures of the 5 jewel us, randy and citizens arriving at doha, after leaving to run their being exchanged for 5 or radians held in the us to run, agreed to release the prisoners, including c, a mac and m i z and a rainy and american businessman sentenced to prison for espionage. a charge has found many rejects around, is getting access to $6000000000.00, an oil revenue that was frozen by south korea. ryans, foreign ministry, confirmed the money would be transferred to a bank account in guitar, where the agreement allows it to be used for humanitarian purposes. of the us,
8:02 pm
secretary of state antony blinking, made a statement about the prisoner release. let's take a look at this process of the end, the engagements necessary to bring it about the freedom of these unjustly detained americans has always been a separate track in our engagement or for that matter, lack of engagement, withdrawn. so irrespective of what was happening or not happening, for example, in pursuing the effort to return to the nuclear agreement, we've been focused on working independently to bring these americans home. so it doesn't speak to anything else in the relationship. we continue to be determined to take the whatever step is necessary to deal with actions by ron and a whole host of various dw, special correspondent to abraham, is following the story from washington dc. little earlier, i asked her what happens next? well, we know that they will 1st to be processed in doha and then they're expected to
8:03 pm
board another flight and make their way to the washington dc area where they are expected to re unite with their families. we saw the images of them coming out of the plane on the tarmac. you know, these are emotional moments that their families are, you know, have been waiting for, for as long as 8 years. one of the prisoners that was released today has been in evan prison since october of 2015. and so this is really a moment of relief for the families. and that's really what the biden administration is going to emphasize onto the emphasize today. i think that they are committed to bringing americans back home. that despite the harsh criticism that this particular agreement has faced the, you know, the flip side, the bright side is that these people are now back home and that, that will be their focus moving forward. well, let's talk about that criticism a because that the deal has been heavily criticized in the united states. why is
8:04 pm
that? right, so republicans have criticized this deal, seeing that it shows that the united states is weak on the global stage. there's also that issue of the $6000000000.00 of funds that have been on the frozen and, and now the running and wishing will have access to them. but the, by the administration has been very clear that there are only 3 things that you know, this money is for, that's food medicine and agricultural products. and that they have reached some kind of mechanism agreement with the guitar is because the money will be transferred 1st to the 30 central bank of been dispensed from. there that they have reached an agreement with the categories that if there's any sign that, that money is being used for anything else that you know of that, that on freezing process can be reversed. american iranians. some have also criticized this deal. seeing that this puts them in jeopardy of the us does
8:05 pm
advise it citizens against travel to iran, but some still have to go for, you know, to visit families or some business and run doesn't recognize dual citizenship. and so they feel that you running americans. i've spoken to, they feel that this makes them all a target and that if the swan because he wants something out of the us, they will just hold them hostages. and that this indeed makes the world less safe place for american citizens around the world. if they are in a country, you know where they can just be grabbed and then used as blackmail to get something out of the us government. if i could just need to any tolts between the united states durand and a briefing. us officials have made it very clear that this doesn't change anything when it comes to their very strict policy towards but you're wrong in regime. they still consider the runyan regime of the state sponsor of terrorism, and that,
8:06 pm
but in the anniversary of the death of between our mazda, i mean the, the 22 year old woman who died last year in police custody allegedly for not wearing her mandatory subject properly a presidential bite and made a statement of supporting the protests. and in addition to that, as you know, at the same time and the same breath of these, the disagreement or dis swap, indeed the implementation of the agreement was announced a new section. so i've actually been, you know, announced on iran and former president medina, jet and also on iranian intelligence. so it's, it's difficult to see how this move might actually far relations between the us and they run or lead to, or restarting, of anything around the nuclear. do thanks. a dw special correspondent to abraham reporting from washington dc. world leaders are gathering in new york for the 70 united nations general assembly. countries are being urged to help the world's
8:07 pm
poorest people and the address major challenges. top of the agenda are climate change and the so called sustainable development goals. there and i'm bishop said of agreements that were designed to eliminate poverty and improve the health and wellbeing of people around the world of progress towards improving the environment and health are far off track and in some cases or even going backwards like 2023. well from new york dw, is janelle, to my own, told me more about the goals that are in the spotlight. yes, pablo, as you say, sustainable development goals very much and focus here in new york ahead of the un general assembly happening behind me. we already heard a rousing message from you and secretary general antonio gutierrez, saying that the sustainable development goals are not just schools, but a promise to build a world of progress of health, of opportunity. and we are falling far short. we have only achieved 15 percent of
8:08 pm
the target so far, and we are at the mid points until 2030. now it's important to note that these targets these goals were made in 2015. and just the last few years alone, i gave us the pandemic, gave us, so russia's war on ukraine and that sort of stock market lease and in stock. there's also a concern here that this war and ukraine might suck up all the air, the room, and take away space from other issues like hunger in the horn of africa or climate change. but what of course, but you, one general assembly is, is also a, an opportunity for especially smaller countries to present their case the nations assembled. and it is going to be imperative for them to be able to do that. if we are going to get anywhere with the sustainable development goals. yeah, so plan to yeah, on the agenda there. janelle, what will the german government be lobbying for during these meetings?
8:09 pm
well, what we have been hearing so far is that development financing is very high on the agenda of the german government. we know that for land has pledged an additional $305000000.00 for the world bank that, that is in turn, supposed to go to low. and so for especially developing countries. now the messaging is very much focused on helping eligible. they're both countries helping out poor and developing countries, but of course, thought unique global co ordination in order to do that. and in the structured world, world co ordination is indeed proving to be what's difficult. so earlier uh, the durham and foreign minister and elaina bearable spoke to assembled to us exactly about this problem. here's what she had to say. to me, it's even more important than never to fight for the rights of the most valuable in the world. and therefore, also the german government, but so many, many countries here at the united nations have brought these topics. and so many
8:10 pm
side events at the agenda. and we are calling for a strong decoration, especially under sustainable development that goes. but it's countries like russia who are trying to stop these common declarations, which also shows that the router was off of the restroom from russia is not only being left against ukraine by weapons and drugs. but it's also being fought with a call one against the forest people in the world. the german foreign minister and elaina barrow bosses. they're saying once again that russia is the divisive character, dividing these united nations. janelle, the, you and sustainable development goals are top of the agenda today. we've been talking about that just now, but with very little progress made and achieving what can we expect during this week of meetings the well,
8:11 pm
this is the real question. you definitely do feel a sense of urgency over here. everyone is aware of how far we have to go to be able to achieve those goals until 2013. what this on whether this sense of urgency full really translate into these, into efforts to achieve these goals. really being kicked into high gear. well that remains to be seen, but the very legacy of the united nations as an effective body to be able to broker these kinds of efforts is on the line here. and everyone will be watching to make sure it is able to a cheve those goals or be able to live up to that legacy extra. now the don't new corresponds into now do my own in new york for us. let's take a look now at some of the other stories making news around the world. almost 200 microns have arrived on produce adding to this size and start reach the island last week. it comes as it leads right wing government. the tops tougher migration measures extending the time migrants can be detained and ensuring more people who
