the the dw news lives from berlin tonight, the us president invokes the legacy of the day veterans and issues a call. busy to defend democracy are not asking us to scale these please, or ask us to stay true. when america stands, we'll have more of pressing the button speech in normandy on this week. the 80th anniversary of the da land is also coming up showing up support for the fight against russia. top level. busy and terrorist between ukrainian and french presidents and through dance army promises a harsh response to a paramilitary attack that killed more than a 100 people. we look at the worsening violence in the country after more than
8:01 pm
a year of civil. the brit golf is good to have you with us on this friday us it president by it and today called on his fellow americans to defend democracy from threats at home and abroad. and he did that with one i to what happened 80 years ago this we fight and spoke at point to hold in france where american soldiers fault a typical battle during the day invasion. a more more to bite and speech problems. a pledge of support for ukraine, and it's more against russia and it comes during a divisive election brace with his republican rival, the former us president donald trump. here is more of what president biden said today as a guy that heard day is not just the honor of those who show it such
8:02 pm
a remarkable bravery on that day. june 6th, 1944. so much as the echoes of their voices to hear them. because they are somebody, this is some of us now they ask us what we do. they're not asking us to scale the squares. they're asking us to stay true with america stands for. we're not asking us to give a risk our lives are asking us care for others in our country more than ourselves. they're not asking us to do their job or asking us to do our job. protect freedom of our time, defend democracy, style progression abroad. and at home to be part of something bigger than our so i was the was president there. i'm joined now by my colleague william blue cross. he was listening and analyzing the words of the us president,
8:03 pm
when it's good to have you here. it was clear who he was talking about, but just to whom was the us president speaking? i think here to key audiences. americans at home is european allies on this side of the atlantic, trying to remind americans in an election year, obviously to vote for him. but from his perspective to defend democracy because of course, joe biden is basically pitched himself as the defender against the likes of donald trump for the way of the americas american way of life. that's what he was talking about in a speech he didn't outlined very specifically what he said he was talking about these big themes of democracy, freedom, liberal values, but then of course, a skittish european public in europe, the allies, european counterparts. trying to make the case that america is not going anywhere that just as american storm to beach is to free europe 80 years ago. they will stand up in a, in an equivalent. i'll be a different way today. if there had not been a donald trump presidency, do you think this speech wouldn't even been made today?
8:04 pm
i mean, donald trump and that his legacy and what could possibly still come that was the driving force behind all of this wasn't sure, but it wasn't the 1st time and us present it came to such a momentous and historic location. like, like the dd landings in northern france to make a grandiose speech about the importance of american democracy of american power in the world. almost every us president has done it day and the world war 2 story more broadly speaking is such an easy story as difficult as the war was. but it's such an easy, black and white good versus evil story to drape upon more complicated, present political issues that we have today. the problem is, yes, that is historically true, right? it really was good versus evil and the free worlds fighting against tyranny. but that was a, if not singular, a rare moment in blo will history to you can't apply a rare moment to everything all the time. well, i was gonna ask you, these comparisons that are implied that were made into speech are, are they,
8:05 pm
are they correct or, or are we can fleeting conflicts here? of course, unless i forget even back then these, the so called free world also oversaw colonies around the world. they themselves picked and chose just as we're picking and choosing today, who got to be free and who didn't get to be free and who got to enjoy these values and who didn't. so they were discrepancies, and double standards there then, and there are today, and it's very, very dangerous. or, of course, always parallels of course, there apparel of what the, the, the, the full scale war and ukraine that russia has launch is the largest land battle in europe. since both were to there's no disputing that but russia is not nazi germany and flooding our food is not adult hitler. so we have these parallels can only go so far. and it's a, it's a very difficult argument for joe biden to be making, to stand for something bigger than just yourself to make a sacrifice. especially given america's flavor of level democracy, which is about yourself as about the individuals about be doing what's best for you
8:06 pm
. he was speaking also to america's allies, particularly the allies here in europe, because there is this fear that the, the, the alliances that have made up our world order for the past 70 years that they could soon fall away. and that's, that's, that's the point, isn't it? that you hear in europe, leaders want the status quote to remain. yeah, well it's very different was that you have on one hand, criticism of american power, an interest not just from extreme sides of wanting to see america received or wanting to see some kind of re balance. obviously we hear from a manual, mike on 1st and foremost, but also the site and then to hear in germany about europe being more of an equal security partner with united states. but the other hand, what does that really mean? and you can be the most critical person of american power and the impact on the consequences that us powers hadn't the world. but if that just went away tomorrow, they were be a massive vacuum, right? that, that would, that could so more chaos. so it's not just, well, let's get rid of the last 80 years. let's get rid of the euro atlantic
8:07 pm
a live. there needs to be talking about cable or what replace is that what comes next? otherwise, you're looking at a power vacuum, which could make things even more chaotic than they are today. where you blue cross is always good to see. we appreciate your analysis. thank you. well, after meeting with you as president biden earlier today, ukraine's president automated zalinski went onto paris to meet with the french president, emanuel micron. so lensky is in france to shore up support for you. grades, war against rant, or russia, or rather france has now agreed to supplying the raj finder jets and train ukrainian pilots. as part of a new military aid package. earlier zalinski told the french parliament that the battle in ukraine is at the cross road or francis promising to send the mirage fighter jets to ukraine by the end of the year. i. s military analysts, frank language, if that's too late to send off rushes offensive
8:08 pm
a yes. so not going to be well, we're not going to be see seeing them in useful quantities and they'll probably get around $25.00 from friends eventually, well into next year. even then i would question whether the integration of the system, the there are 2000 system. there's a 19 nineties designed this particular fair. and i got to a question whether that would be complete even that we might be looking out to you . but it will provide a capability when it provide extra capability, probably not. what it will provide is capacity, which is to say more jets. the problem is, so it is an old yet. there are concerns about age. as with that email that treat across the important element is what's in them. know what the frame does. so that's the ac on x, it's not k yet. what they will be supplied with. but yes, it's better than nothing. if i with the ukrainians, however, i'd be looking at uh, switch swedish out across
8:09 pm
a much more suitable much more up to date sweets. it keeps the plan with actually rather than just multiply and the number of the frames and logistics change. well, if, when you, when you say i'm sometime late next year, i mean, it sounds like you're expecting this more to last a lot longer than has, has been predicted. i mean, is that what we're seeing with these promises of mirage fighter jets as well? i think so. i think brent the this is emma, this is positive. it's maybe a political gesture, i think. but what would say now we haven't seen for the last 2 years is a sense of the, of, of a sustainment for the ukrainian military. another was looking ahead more than next month. so the next couple of months. what we need to be seeing is looking out to 510 years to provide you quite another view with the ability to at least defend themselves now. but also to do tough future regression, alongside execution, nato allies. so this is a long term commitment, and i think it's white that it is whether the will will last not long,
8:10 pm
but i don't have my crystal, i don't know, i know to you or anybody else. that's correct. let's look at the, the immediate future here. the ukraine has been given a green light biased allies to strike targets inside russia with western supplied weapons. does ukraine need these jets, these mirage finder jets to do exactly that? this particular variance is multi roll. it in c, re it can strike or is designed to strike behind enemy lines like like most across the very similar succeeds. another one, i'd be doubtful, frankly, whether the abl next, the electronics, the re dos tolerating systems would be able to penetrate the battery from edible russian ground based at defense system. so i would suspect that at cost of this age and capability would be used within the country to supplement at defenses against me, saw christmas all attacking drone attack on of course,
8:11 pm
against russian i across should, should they be a threat themselves? and i'd be doubtful about putting them in to us and ask space or the sixty's frontier, no doubt, whether that's going to be i, that's a french primary role of russia's president fulton has warned that budget could provide long range weapons to some of its allies, to some countries do strike western targets of response to native, allowing ukraine to use western weapons to attack russian territory. i mean, is that a credible threat and what countries is put in talking about, do you think just talking about syria, lebanon, iran, conceivably? sometime in countries or to provide a capability to them, it is very credible. i'd say i didn't look pretends made for us now for the last 2 years on the issue here is his credibility and at some point is blocked. it's going to be called this. so as a proxy action is credible,
8:12 pm
it's quite dangerous. and of course it's another rocha's up on the escalate for a lot of that we've been seeing all the way. certainly since the start of the war. so yes, it is credible and very dangerous. i suspect frank language is always, frankly, appreciate your time in your analysis tonight. thank you. tardy. here's a look now at some of the other stories making headlines around the world. the united nations has added is real to a global list of offenders who have committed violations against children. this list aims to shame parties to conflicts in the hope of pushing them to implement measures to protect children. israel has criticize the humans decision calling it shameful. indeed is it president has formerly appointed the range remotely, as prime minister for a rare 3rd term, is national democratic alliance. one of the most seats and recently held general elections, even as his own party failed to secure a majority vote, he will be sworn into office on sunday. at least 7 people,
8:13 pm
including several children, have been killed in a bus accident in syria. the school bus skidded off the road and plunged into a river rescue teams and searched for about 6 hours for survivors. it's a for democracy group in sudan says around 40 people have been killed by the rapids support forces. the r f. s, as they're known, is one faction of the suit in these army of the group called the karate resistance committee, made the claims in a post on social media just a day after more than another. 100 people were reported to have been killed by the same group. the country collapsed into civil war last year with the military split into 2 opposing groups. sedans, army chief promised a harsh response to the attack, but the united nations is called for all sides to silence. they are gone.
8:14 pm
here's dw corresponded felix miranda with an update. so this, i talked to curious funds as the evening and the so dance part of military a group. the artists have fled by having done that. gallo has been blamed for the attack. this is the 2nd attack within this week. the 1st attack that killed about 104 people. this latest that talk that has queued about 40 people. multiple people have been in judge some of them whereas to a university hospital in nearby. and i was also rash to several other probably because because we've seen an on demand area, which is a twin feet, a tween copy to all we've kind of to him. now this set to about tax have been taking place and a lot of civilians have died so far and the numbers are watching because the sofa, the estimated down by since the war began. an eagle is about 150000, and the numbers just keep going by the the that was finished,
8:15 pm
