the, the, you're watching dw name was coming to live from berlin, type security in switzerland as more world leaders begin to gather ahead of a summit on peace and ukraine. the conference aids to outlines the basis for future negotiations. but russia wasn't invited to take parts. also coming up on the show of in south africa opens a new political pastor with a familiar leader. the role remo poster is re elected president, following a coalition agreement as his amc parties share power for the 1st time. and the 1st of victory at euro 2024 goes to the host, the germany put on

a dazzling display to cruise past scotland to 51. and the opening match the i'm clear richardson, thank you very much for joining us. a summit on peace and ukraine. kicks off today in switzerland to bringing together more than 90 countries, ukraine's president for letting me zalinski arrived in the town of broken shop on friday evening. german chancellor allow schultz french president and myself crohn and us vice president comma la harris will also attend the summit. aims to create unity around the peace plan. put forward by ukraine or russia is not invited and it's main backer. china is not coming either. of the conference is also serving to highlight divisions among the international community about the way forward and

ukraine. all it together, we can stop the mattress from moscow. most moves until we deprive russian have the opportunity to terrorize you. crate ox included and we'll have no real interest in seeking a better plan for that even though that 1st fat pc to morrow and don't be tough at that. yeah. the lights, as long ukrainian president allowed me, is a lance key on the road and stock code for live harris at the g 7 summit in italy, always the same message. ukraine needs more support to stop rushing aggression at home, ukraine faces and unrelenting onslaught. its forces are overstretched and low on ammunition and soldiers, russia range missiles on and cities and makes territory la games. a stark contrast to the peace summit and this without where ukraine's friends are gathering to discuss its peace plan without russia. so landscape 10 point plan includes demands that russia respect to ukraine's territorial integrity,
12:03 pm
which means giving back land it has captured by force. it also demands a complete russian military withdrawal calls for an international court for russian war crimes and reparations. it's not clear if there will be a consensus on the key points. but after the g 7 summit, you crane can count on long term support from its closest allies. last, the piece you create must be underwritten by ukraine's own ability to defend itself now. and to deter future aggression any time that in the future. however, under cutting the premium plan, brazil and china have released their own peace plan calling for de escalation and dialogue without naming russia as the aggressor. neither country is attending the peace summit. china said it was pointless if both russia and ukraine did not participate on, which is the landscape has been diplomatic and responding to china is fig statement . if china s o total interview on 8 each can

prepare alternative piece formula. if we share common views on 8 likely globally with all the world, i think so. so if they share the same weight to piece, we will find dial soleski has tried to draw them up as much support from the so called global south as possible. i know visiting singapore in the philippines last week to meet with leaders. but savanski was unable to convince many countries from the global south to join the peace summit and get them to support his plan to isolate russia. some have left it on clear or say they will not attend as the war rages on, it's unclear just how much real progress can happen without involving russia or china. but organizers say the talks are a start with a goal of eventually bringing russia to the table. and we have our correspondent
12:05 pm
rosie bershard in switzerland with the very latest rosie. i was referred russia, it was not invited. so what exactly can these discussions achieve without them? there are russia was not invited, but also rush that made it very clear as soon as there was any public word of this conference to be planned. but it thought it was pointless. and that it was not interested in coming in any case. so i think what the organizes are hoping is that they do accepting it this way. statements will really give some world leaders some face time away from their domestic politics to try and think about what future piece and ukraine could look like. they're going to talk about a couple of a, of the less controversial topics. so for example, humanitarian issues, food security, the return of you creating children, which quality are still complicated discussed. they're nowhere near as controversial for all these leaders gathered to your as topics like what about the question to where borders lie? and secondly, i think organizers and ukraine would like to show that there is support for keys

here. russia, on the other hand, is me doing everything in its power to the be able to summit arrows. a vladimir putin has floated a proposal, which includes ukraine of band and in 4 provinces, and also dropping any ambitions of joining nato is, is his vision being considered seriously at all at this meeting, or certainly not by ukraine or by its western allies. for example, german chancellor, olaf schultz is basically accused russia of putting this so called proposal out just on the eve of the summit in order to kind of disrupt from it. and i think analyst would say that is part of a broader russian plan here because not only has, we also put this so called peace proposal, which of course, it basically asks you crate to capitulate and gave over its territory. it's also been putting pressure on many countries worldwide and its partners to not show up to the summit. and really, one of the big questions looming ahead of these talks was, well,
12:07 pm
who is going to be on the final guess list? i was looking at it just as it was released and there are 57 heads of state here overall in about 95 countries represented. but there are some really notable absences when it comes to diplomatic breakthroughs from asia, africa, latin america, for example, sites, africa, brazil, india, indonesia have all chosen to either send diplomats or ministers instead of heads of state. and i think that will be seen by many as a snow up here. still organizers say look, the fact that we've managed to gather so many countries here does in itself show that there is a rolling around the idea of trying to broker into this more, which is of course, continues to drive goal. and then you creating still fighting to defend their territory. so just to be clear, do you think there is any chance of seeing in other proposal for a piece plan coming out of this summit? so what i have heard from sources that i've been speaking to here is that there is a declaration being drafted. so there should be a text which is signed by countries that are present present here. but i've been
12:08 pm
told that this is probably going to be pretty weak in terms of the wording so use because of course, when you're trying to get into agreement on a text between 90 or 95 countries, that you're gonna have to word it very carefully in order to get the backing of each one of them, particularly those countries in the so called global sites, that if you walk in and ever narrow or tight rope trying to show a support for the west, but also not to do this, has been self too much from russia and particularly china, china, of course, a big player which is not at this conference. so some sort of a declaration. but of course, really organizers know that this is not going to be a conference for peace is brokerage. russia is not at the table, it's about laying the guide for future talks. but certainly i think a case of kind of high stakes is that we're dragging on but relatively low expectations in terms of what's actually going to come out of this conference or force on it. rosie bernard in switzerland. thank you so much. we can turn to south africa now where the african national congress or a n c. a struck a deal to form

a coalition government with multiple other parties among them. is there a long time rival the democratic alliance or d a. and this follows a major election upset in which the amc lost its majority for the 1st time since the end of white minority will under apartheid. the coalition also agreed on re electing the serial remo posts as president. there's a little more on his unprecedented term ahead from our correspondent diane hawker. so i'm, of course, the has retained the semester can presidency, but this time under different circumstances. to get over the line, he needed the assistance of a number of opposition parties, including the democratic alliance. a party that campaigned csv against the agency in the may elections. the people have spoken. they have not given any part to you in the charts. and now requires policies to come together. mister m a pulls that is the leader of his policy. and he is the meta of a policy that is committed to constitutionalism,
12:10 pm
the feeling of democracy edits institutions, and therefore we will work with them. now the a and c, d, a i, p, and add the parties are formed what they call a government of national unity. and this government of national unity will be constituted, noted by 2, not by 3, but by more parties that voluntarily wants to participate. what does that mean? what it means, these different political parties have decided to work together for the basement of south africa. they've reached a formal agreement that will govern how they engage going forward. this includes how they will vote on different policies and how they plan to rebuild. south africa's economy, improve its energy situation and improve employment. it's a tough task ahead for these political parties,
12:11 pm
particularly because they have vastly different backgrounds and different ideological views. but they've agreed that they're going to make it work to ensure that south africa gets back to work. now here in germany, one of the biggest sporting events of the year the european football championships, has kicked off with a bang hosted germany beat scotland to $51.00 in the opening match. and germany taking the lead early on at the scots, out classed by the home team to cruise to an eye catching victory at the live we antics with the scotland fans and grab the headlines going into the match and they were in a fine voice during the game, but heading away from the munich stadium, you can imagine a little bit more subdued scott's one i will be hoping their team can get the results they need in their remaining to group gains to progress. while german confidence has been given a major boost to try to be in a studio now we have

a daniel barcelona from dw sports at danielle a great start into the tournament for host germany. um tell us your impressions of the 1st day of your a 2024. so that was a perfect start to determine tournament for germany. i mean, coming in to the tournament, there was a lot of questions asked of this team because their last 2 performances had been lack luster to say the least. they were questions about form 91 lawyer, whether he should be starting or not. and yesterday there when was really a statement. so $51.00 again, scotland, 5 different scores on the square feet. i mean 6 if you count on antonio, rudy there who squared an own goal. so 20 cruise experience player master class. just to put things into perspective. he attempted a 102 passes. he completed a 101. wow. so absolutely amazing from him. the use jamal was yeah, la, floor and verdes. this team is really giving fans something to be excited about that they went in with so much pressure and it was such an exciting game. i

understand you were in the fan zone here in berlin. can you tell us a little bit what it was like? yeah, i mean, the amazon chamberlain in general is definitely football crazy. there are fans everywhere you look now yesterday i was in the fans on, in front of the parliament building, which is one of the 2 main fans zones. of course it being the 1st day, there were a little bit of kings that the police had to work out. so the actually ended up evacuating that fan zone for around 2 hours. because they found a backpack which they thought was suspicious. now they shouldn't have had backpacks because there should have been checks, but after about 2 hours, they figured out it was okay. there was no threat and everything to go forward. full fans were at capacity. hundreds of thousands of fans and the atmosphere was amazing. so this summer is going to be absolutely fantastic. security obviously front and center in this tournament. also, let's talk a little bit more about what we can expect to have. do you think the fact that germany has had this 1st major windows that bode well for them and the rest of the tournament? definitely, so after tomorrow, germany will definitely after yesterday,
12:14 pm
sorry, germany will be considered favorites. their team is also very set up to win, right. now they're one of the oldest teams in the tournament, actually if not the oldest. when we talk about the tournament favorites, we can't miss france. of course, france is the runners up from the last world cup. and they could have come into this tournament with their 3rd strings players and still being considered the favorites. england also in their golden generation. they haven't done anything yet . there's a lot of pressure on this side now for to go with chris on a rinaldo. maybe in his last tournament we never know was rinaldo croatia always strong? so definitely a lot of quality in this tournament and it's going to be absolutely fantastic. sure is daniel, thank you so much for joining us as a dynamic barcelona from dw sports. and a quick reminder of our top story delegates from about a 100 countries, including germany, france, b, u. s, and the u. k. r, meeting in switzerland to discuss plans for peace and ukraine. the summit aims to create unity around a plan put forth by cubic foot. russia has not been invited and its main factor.
