breezes his right ear secret service agents, the former shield around him, rises the patience saint saint, his supporters, the floor being taken to safety the f. b. i says it was an assassination attempt. a spectator was shot in the head and died instantly. according to an eye witness, 2 other people were hit and are in critical condition. after the shooting, trump posted this on his social media platform. it was shot with a bullet that peers the upper part of my right ear. i knew immediately that something was wrong. i heard a whizzing sound shots and immediately felt the bullet ripping through the skin.
2:02 pm
much bleeding took place. so i realized then what was happening. a witness told bbc news that he saw the suspect and informed law enforcement moments before he pulled the trigger. we noticed the guy crawling army, you know, they're throwing up the roof of the building beside us. 5050 feet away from us. so we're standing there. you know, we're pointing, we're pointing out the guy growing up the roof and he had a gun right. he had a rifle, right. we could clearly see what the rifle. absolutely. we're pointing out them. the police are down there running around on the ground where like a man this guy on the roof with a rifle in the police or like hall work, you know, like like any know what's going on. you know, we're like a raise you and what we can see it from right here. we see him. there is he's calling. and next thing, you know, i'm like, i'm thinking of myself. i'm like,
2:03 pm
why is trump still speaking? why have they not pulled him up the stage? i'm standing there pointing at him for, you know, 2 or 3 minutes secret service was looking at us from the top of the barn. i'm pointing at that roof. just stand there like this. and next thing, you know, by transferring out, authorities killed the suspect 20 year old thomas matthew. see he was a registered republican from pennsylvania. the secret service is under pressure to explain what led to this major security breach. trump was targeted just days before he will be confirmed as the republican presidential dominey and election year that was already turbulent, has now taken a dark turn in america. for the latest details i spoke to washington correspondent janelle, to milan this indeed, as you said,
2:04 pm
they are ben. this is an ongoing investigation by the f. b. i and several cooperating agencies. they are going through every bit of evidence combing through every 2nd of eye, witness accounts, combing through endless hours of footage. but of course so as the dust settles and the shocks of side somewhat a full half day after this incident occurred. the question, the question coalescing in everyone's minds here in washington is how this could have happened in such a high security situation. now the house committee on oversight and accountability said it would launch its own probe into the matter and has summoned the director of the secret service kimberly tito, to testify before them at a hearing on july 22. and indeed, a lot of these questions are going to uh, are going to have to be answered by the secret service earlier today. there was a,
2:05 pm
a briefing by the f b i in order to get reporters and the media up to speed on what was happening. and they said the things of that are well established by now that we are talking about a shooter who managed to place himself on a low roof outside the event by taught $11.00. that was where he was able to have a direct line of a line of sight thought towards the former president of donald trump, but to be in. but the secret service was not represented at that briefing, but a lot of the questions of that were being directed at them. they were having to refer again to the secret service. for example, how is it possible that he got so close? how is it possible that you've gotten multiple rounds of before? ok, before the threat was neutralize, as they say in their language? so this is definitely going to be something that i taught as i taught many are going to be watching out for what they were sponsor of the secret service is going
2:06 pm
to be what kind of security failures there were if any, and how this all came to pass, and apart from all those details you've listed. what more do we know about the shooter? indeed, so it's tom, those. but if you see he is a 20 year old from bethel park that is a suburb in western pennsylvania. it's a suburb that is about one hours drive away from butler, pennsylvania, which of course is where this rally took place. uh, and where this uh, uh, attempted assassination against the former president donald trump took place. now he is a registered republican, although records show that he has donated before to uh, democrat, lied causes. he's thought to have no criminal record. he had no id on him at the time he was being identified. so he was identified through other means through dna
2:07 pm
testing through biometric records. now in the f, b i statement that was released about him. there wasn't so much more detail apart from that. but uh, rather at once again that it's a reminder that this is an active investigation and the f b i is asking anyone who has any information to come forward at this stage dw, corresponding, janelle deem allowance the let's see you now from some of the right with this is to the shooting there it sounded like there are fireworks and everybody kind of hesitated. like, what's happening before trump like swatted his ear. you can see that he actually had that in. he dropped and not to and everybody had the initial reaction to draw it to the ground. and it was just, it was just like people were just on top of each other like she was getting. she was getting very light on, on top of her. and so it was crazy. oh, i heard the shocks on my car was far attractive to begin with. somebody over there
2:08 pm
was screen shot shot. so i made my way over. i said, i'm in mercy, department physician. let me help you. guy. his phone around was jam between the benches near the head shot here in lots of blood. ran out of you as president joe biden has condemned the power to assess the nation attempts against trump. there's no place in america who's kind of sick. it's sick. it's weather as well as united country cannot allow for this to be happening. we cannot be like, we cannot condone this. the bottom line is the trump rally is a reality that he should have an intellect can be conducted peacefully without any problem. but the idea, the idea that this political violence or violence in america like this is system part of it just not appropriate. we everyone, everybody must,
2:09 pm
could get it. every american journalist william go crossed as deputy editor of the parliament magazine which deals with the politics and brussels. i asked him about the political climate in the west, leading up to one official said was an attempt on trunks by as well. unfortunately, biden's statement. there is rather aspiration on this is something we've heard a lot from joe biden and his previous democratic predecessor in the white house, brock obama, where they tried to, always, you know, aspire to the, the better side of the united states. but of course, american history is full of violence, political violence, and otherwise we know that it's a violent country with massive amounts of guns and gun violence and a long history of vigilante violence. and, you know, targeting political leaders and political officials is bad, especially fire brands like donald trump, i think broadly be categorized as so as much as joe biden, i think, is trying to elevate the conversation and speak to one's better angels,
2:10 pm
so to speak. there is, this is not unprecedented that this, he said that there is no place in america for this, but unfortunately, there is. what does this mean then for tom's campaign we're going to see you going head of course. i mean, already we've heard from the trump campaign and the republican party that the, the upcoming national convention for them will be going on as schedules he will be attending and he will almost certainly be nominated as the candidate for the republican party. but if we get a passes pro, log americans, sort of american culture loves this sort of career figure. and those images that we were seeing of donald trump getting up in the face to bump are going to be iconic and are going to come to define him in his sort of his persona in the political spectrum. and i think that is going to be played lead really deeply into, in these weeks ahead. you know, every time there's a big development in a campaign, we always ask, you know, how long are we going to remember this?
2:11 pm
and look at the answer. basically, all of you that always is well until the next big development, you know, we were just talking about the job items, debate performance, and how long are we going to be talking about that? well, now we have this to talk about. so when i think republicans and donald trump are gonna lead very heavily into it, the republicans, of course, are known for being anti gun control, how they responding to this. is this something i am really fascinated in watching? i mean it, we, it'll, allegedly, the suspect had an a r 15 and a are 15, is my conic rifle for the gun rights movement for people who want to have less gun control and more ability for individuals to have guns. we have a long history. it seems like not a week goes by, we're a legally purchased gun, is used by someone without a criminal record to shoot people, whether it's at a school, whether it's in a public place or now in this case and a political setting. there's just so many incidents as like this, and republicans in dallas from specifically go very hard on people's right to be able to do that. maybe not to shoot people that the right to be able to have those
2:12 pm
weapons. and then things like this happens. so it's going to be interesting how republicans walk this line and if people hold them accountable for essentially creating or helping create a situation where this is possible, right? where their own candidate is the target of the policies that they have advocated for. for the decade. that could become a weakness for them, but again, it passes for a lot to use that expression. again, republicans are very good on messaging and very good at basically saying the answer to guns is more guns. that's always been sort of airline. and we could probably expect more of that to come. yeah, i think you said that another thing, the secret service is under intense. great. so indeed, when i watch that video, i was shocked as just a layman, you know, who, who has has, who's watched to share of, of secret service videos and their tactics and their strategies. and they have plans in place for what it's supposed to happen when things things happen. how gunman got on top of the roof, just a few 100 feet away from the print from the former president and,
2:13 pm
and possibly would be president again is, is mind boggling to me and how they got him off the stage is mind boggling to me. but these are things that as we just heard from, janelle are going to be under intense investigation at moving, moving forward. we heard that long sound bite in the report earlier from the eye witness saying them warning for minutes. there's a gunman. so the secret service action here is, is going to be the most under scrutiny and then allowing donald trump to sort of give that fist ball been exposed himself and make himself a target, or possibly when there was still an active threat. all of these things were just big questions to me that i of course don't have answers to but are going to be central questions and the investigation going forward, dental as well. again, blue cross, thank you for your analysis and reactions to the shooting to come again from around the world with leaders expressing condemnation and offering sympathy. this un secretary general antonia with taylor says, condemned, but he calls an act of political violence which donald trump speedy were com. right . but it's probably in his de keeps style. i've responded to what he called
2:14 pm
shocking scene, saying political violence in any form has no place in our societies and my thoughts are with all the victims of this attack. ukraine's president told him is the landscape. it should a stipend, speaking of his relief, the trump is now safe in saying he hopes america emerges stronger from this is alma and there is a job in attempt on the life of donald strongly was late to harry, the crime that can only be condemned and which demonstrates how serious but challenges to democracy are globally binding a daughter and violence in any farm and anywhere most absolutely not prevailing new depths aluminum nipple in those out to or yeah, i'm confident that america will rise to the challenge by which mr. trump a speedy recovery strength and supports to those affected him who seemed to postpone our stop cycle, made every evil intention to fail. he and they've died. and let's get more of the european perspective. joining us correspondence, matthew, more about it. and lisa louie in paris and jetpack and brussels. let's start with
