a disastrous election set back and show down ahead in german soccer. as the new bonus league season takes off choir labor cruise and have to repeat their triumph from last time round, but the buyer and unit they have different planes. the i bring golf, it's good to have you with us on this friday and we begin with the raise for the white house now in the final stretch on thursday. come over here is wrapped up the democratic national convention in chicago, formerly accepting the parties nomination to run for president of the us. and she did that by delivering the biggest speech of her career. the show of balloons is coming to have is officially accepted the democratic party's presidential nomination and didn't have except in speech a pitch to the american people seemed around hope for the forward facing vision. i
8:02 pm
know there are people of various political views watching tonight, and i want you to know, i promise to be a president for all americans to america. fundamental principles from the law to free and fair elections to the peaceful transfer. 2 of power to her message, rapturous receptive crowd. i think her, you know, of recapturing, of american values. you know, that go to all people who can be proud of our country on the national stage, domestic stage. i'm all of the policy priorities that have been, you know, had by democrats to make this country a better place for not just americans, but for people of all backgrounds and origins. that's something that i'm really
8:03 pm
excited about. i think is the time the year of the woman, and we're going to change the nation with calling bolero. this idea of everyone working together, you know, listening everybody else. instead of telling people the very important message from anywhere in the world, you know easier said than done, but i think we can start uh at home. i have is made the case for himself and the hearing of reno, delegates of, to the days of having big names appeared on stage to make the case to these included towering pallets and figures like 4 massage couples. the a bomb is and the clinton's, the celebrities like oprah and stevie wonder and from habits is running my 10 miles of actual unknown. and lastly, until 2 weeks ago. and so here in the d and c was also the launch pad. pamela harris is top. com la harris is experience and tom ally harris is ready for a job or a job or a job or
8:04 pm
a job for everyone watching is to get in the trenches and do the blocking and tackling one inch out of time. one yard out of time. one thing go out of time, one door knock out of time, $15.00 donation out of time. let's all the messages around. what time it says like delegates on the own, committed to move in some to linked to a messaging on what she plans to do about gaza. one of the most divisive issues in the polity. uncommitted delegate, you know, we want her to push for our permanent immediate cease fire and, and arms and bar go now. and of course, you know, we appreciate the fact that, that it was mentioned. but at this point words are not empty, promises aren't enough anymore. we need to know what her policy is gonna be, but by not the 2024 democratic convention just being one of high spirits enjoy for the optimism. now the question remains whether that happens can float all the way
8:05 pm
to the election and that's into the aspect level or whether it may best. joining me here at the studio now is rachel rizzo. she's a non resident senior fellow at the atlanta council. think tank, which is in washington, but she is here in berlin for a couple of weeks. good timing for us. rachel is going to see you in person. so the past 4 days, big, big time, the most important time in the campaign, other than election day did come over here is did she do what she had to do? well, i think coming in to the d. n. c, there were a couple underlying goals. the 1st was to obviously keep the momentum that she has built over the last couple of weeks, not just with bite and stepping down and with her choosing walls, but also getting people excited about her as a candidate getting, making herself a little bit more known to the country, but it was also a big message to undecided voters, people that might not be as familiar with her might not be familiar at as we know
8:06 pm
with her background with her vice presidential candidate. so i think that was kind of a goal going into this was to build the momentum and continued on, did you hear anything in her speech last night that would signal okay, this is going to make an undecided voters say i want to come with harris. so i think that last night she kind of ran into the same problem that she ran into when she ran for president last time, which was no one really knew what she stood for. she didn't really have clear policies. and that was sort of a nail in the coffin for her. so her speech last night, it was electric, it was full of energy, but it was a little bit light on policy. she said things that i think would be attractive to undecided voters about, you know, lowering grocery cost and making health care more affordable, making reproductive health care more affordable or accessible. but how those things were going to be done weren't as clear. and i think that's going to be key for her
8:07 pm
between now and the election in there. there's been a little of attention on the protesters outside the convention center, particularly the the profile, just indian protesters. what about the message that came from her? was there any difference in her stance on israel and the palestinians in the mos compared to jo bike? so this is what's going to be really hard for, carla harris, i think, is trying to figure out what her position is on israel palestine. so in her speech last night, she came out very clearly and said that the us is gonna support israel will give it what it needs to defend itself, but it has a right to defend itself and then said, but what has happened the last few months in gaza is quote devastating, that's basically what biden has said, you know, and that has not been enough to make the very real concerns of thousands of palestinians, error of americans to really lay those concerns and let them know that the policy
8:08 pm
will change under a harris administration so i would expect these protests to continue until november, so we'll just have to see if people stay home the way that they did during the primaries provided in some of the key states like michigan. yeah. into and she didn't have to go through the primary process writing. she didn't have to go through, you know, trying to find compromises with certain wings of the party. yeah, maybe that's why there was somebody's jubilation sheet. as one commentator said, she is a perfect projection screen for the people that were in that room last night, but that's not the way it will be between now and election day. right? no, i think what happens now between now and election day is, you know, after the d n. c, after the r n. c, there's always a bunch of excitement people are, you know riled up, ready to go ready to knock on doors on the honeymoon though, but the honeymoon is over. exactly. and when you look at poles, it is. this is not a race that comma harris has in the back. it's tighter now. then it was between
8:09 pm
vitamin trump, but she's still the high end and some pretty key state so well, this is really exciting for a lot of people who want to see complet harris as president. if this is where the rubber meets the road between now and november, would you say that this is still an election that is donald trump's to lose? i think the selection is still donald trump's to lose. it's easy to get caught up in the excitement of the dmc, which is understandable, but again, look at polls look at, you know, how people are talking about these issues in the us. there's still a lot of people that are gonna go out there and vote for donald trump, and remember it's 74 days until election of the day. it's a long time, but that again, it's not just over long and short. right. richard was origin good to have here in the studio, thank you. from us to french politics, french president, emanuel macro and has begun talks with key figures from several political parties to form a new government, including a new prime minister, inconclusive parliamentary elections nearly 2 months ago. dealt
8:10 pm
a blow to macaroni centrist alliance. he met with leaders from the left, sentries and conservatives on friday, and it's due to hold talks with the far right on monday. the left is new popular front coalition, one of the most seats in the last election, but it fell short of a majority. background's own presidential term engine 2027, but he could see his power, limited by the next govern, corresponded rosie birch yard. is that the elysee palace in paris for us, and she reminded us of how the french elections ended to wind president macro and cold for these small selections back in june. he said that his goal was to clarify the political situation in france. will that seem to quite spectacularly backfire? because not only did his political grouping, his centers grouping, lose its majority, but there turned out to be no majority whatsoever. so literally a situation of less political clarity than ever before in this and coordination of
8:11 pm
funds in the 5th republic, a hung parliaments of that is unprecedented. it's hard to overstate these compared to other countries or nearby, for example, of germany, belgium, or the netherlands. there just is no political history or culture here of coalition building. so we're still in a put you on your situation today. yeah, so they're having to learn something that they've never had to do before. macro on cities talking to all of the parties. now what are the possible coalitions here? are well, listen, it still looking pretty murky because we know one thing for sure. and that is that the, the political group which came up on top in these last snap legislative elections. that's the central to far less than the popular front lines. they say the prime ministerial job, the job performing government, should be rightfully theirs. however, it's still looking pretty far out of reach for them at the moment because we've seen different political group things coming into these talks today. and essentially saying that they have
8:12 pm
a red line because in that left is political group, there is a far left party called front on boat. it's seen as basically extremists by parties which are on the right of the political spectrum. there. that means it's really still all to play for. we're expecting that present my call might come up with a name for his primary serial a pick next week, perhaps tuesday before the power olympic game starts. but he's the president, which likes to call you likes to come up with surprises. so we really don't know yet. who's going to bit forward that candidate for the left is the lights. looks like she has pretty slim chance of so far listing lucy custody. who says she thinks that y'all should be hers so far looking on successful? and i'm wondering what about the, the far right, moving forward, you know, macro and he called snap elections because of the games that the far right made in the european and parliamentary elections. but in the snap elections in france, the far right lost some support. so where did things stand moving forward or?
8:13 pm
well, they were locked out of power and so far as they slip to 3rd place when it came to the 2nd range of parliamentary elections. but it should be noted the far right still no has more parliamentary seats than ever before here in the funds. and they, they therefore remain a political force to be reckoned with. they will be getting seats our members in a government cabinet moving forward, but you can be sure the leader of the far right here in front of maureen la penn, still sees herself as a president in waiting. we're talking currently about who will be the prime minister, who will be government cabinet ministers. but the point is that the bigger political prize in front of the presidency, emanuel microns role itself, his term runs until 2027. and that's so mostly likely, again the far right trying to challenge him and get the biggest role in fresh politics user as the board talked with the latest from parents, denied rosie's always thank you. a german citizen who was freed in exchange for russian agents and a prisoner swap earlier this month is now under investigation. german prosecutors
8:14 pm
are looking into allegations that the man who was known as rico k may have been responsible for an explosion. he was among the western prisoners along with the u. s. reporter endorse garbage, who were released earlier this month. he was sentenced to death in bella. ruth on terrorism charges, but later pardoned by that country's leader, alexander looked machine gun rico. k was seen on television, television, apparently confessing to working for ukrainian intelligence service stores from snider or more. i'm joined now by the w as political correspondence. so i mean young this time you get to see use a rico k possibly connected to an explosion. what more can you tell us us? yeah, brent. this might have 1st seemed strange. the german government involved a prisoner swamped to bring one of its citizens held in a foreign jail sentence to death. that brings him home on
8:15 pm
a private jets and reportedly chancellor schultz was there when he arrived to shaken by the hand. and now germany, also warranties are investigating him. the federal prosecutors have not said which explosion 80 is that looking into. but according to reports in the victims on talk news paper here in germany, this goes back to a request from the beller, russian. no, socrates themselves. so 1 may, will assume that to, you know, he's facing the same allegations as he faced when he was in court at a meeting. and i think this whole story, at least the new details we've had today about a german investigation as well. just shows how cautiously gemini is. so the tip toeing through, the diplomatic mine field, that is one of the results of russia is more than you cried. was i mean reminders
8:16 pm
how did he end up in prison in belarus? in the 1st place, the right at rico k was arrested by the bel original authorities when he tried to fly out of minutes in october of last year. and he was charged subsequently with espionage terrorism and causing an explosive destination . now, during his trial, as we say, controversial a, indeed, the russian t. v showed him apparently confessing to working full the ukrainian intelligence service s b u. and as part of that work, he said that he had collected a rucksack and a place that neg just next to some train tracks. and the allegation is that subsequently there was an explosion as a result of that at now. rico k said,
8:17 pm
while he had no knowledge that there was a boom there or anything. but that was the evidence that the battle russians play at the present seed in court, who knows whether that confession is true. but what does seem clear is that the, the russian hill authorities had a desire to exchange this man uh, for uh, well for agents who were being held in western countries at the time. in particular . the one that didn't crossteck off was the man who carried out a murder here in berlin in 2019 on kremlin old as he was being held in a gem in jail. and indeed, he was one of those russians who was sent home as part of this prisoner exchange. so it's a complex story. and i think many more details are likely to come out in the, in the subsequent months, dw, so, i mean,
8:18 pm
young thinking is through the complicated story here in berlin tonight. and so, i mean, thank you. all right, let's take a look now at some of the other stories that are making headlines around the world wide health. national security spokesman john kirby. he says gaza ceasefire talks in cairo, are making progress and we'll continue over the weekend. he said is real into mos need to come together and work towards implementation. negotiations are being monitored by the us, egypt and guitar. a russian court has a sentence 5 people to prison in terms of up to 9 years for their role in an anti is real riot. last october, hundreds of protesters in circle the plane from is real ad ma truck color airport in the southern region of august in several police officers were injured in the edits of india's prime minister in the fringe remote he has offered to help in the war. in ukraine, moody is the 1st indian leader to visit key needs since ukraine became independent
8:19 pm
from the soviet union in 1990. 1 ukraine's president's for them is zalinski called moody's trip. friendly and symbolic. a warm welcome in key for the indian prime minister at the timing and significance of his trip did not go unnoticed. the name on the eve of independence day, this, this visit is really friendly and important. does it towards the football video crane? yes, okay, and so you know, vendor moody has maintained ties with both russia and ukraine while the countries are war. he joins a lot of me, zalinski and visiting a memorial to hundreds of children, killed in russian attacks on new crane and attended several meetings and talks with the president. just 6 weeks ago, he was on a similar to, to russia,
8:20 pm
meeting with president vladimir putin and embracing him, prompting some international criticism. moody says india is not indifferent on the war, but this on the side of peace. recently, i went through restaurants meeting there. also, i have said this in p a words that any problem is never sold on the battlefield. some of the way to a solution lies only through dialogue, through diplomacy. and we should move in that direction without wasting any time. in the i cannot afford to alienate russia and his sofa avoided explicitly condemning its invasion. it is also abstained on un resolutions that criticize the criminal and
8:21 pm
but moody is working to keep you crane and its allies on assigned to framing, india as a pacemaker and offering to act as a mediator to bring an end to the financing. part sports is now here in germany, the new bonus lincoln football season is kicking off reading champions. buyer labor crews in are hoping to repeat their try him from last time round, but fire in munich. want to re establish their decade long dominance of the top leak as this season has plenty to offer. a handful of contenders famous faces in charge and the club with a cold fall away returns to the top flight the sky. so limit phones over just labor cruising or the heavy favorites after their undefeated run. last season, lead by jobby alonzo buyer labor cruising ran through the league like a freight train, winning the domestic double retaining their core talent. they look destined to repeat recently, winning the german super cup over stuttgart alonzo will be facing 2 former players
8:22 pm
now coaching and major clubs that have potential to go all of the way as well. norie shy, he took over coaching duties at dorman club. he debuted with the 816 fan favorites, like mark old royce and mounts how most have moved on. but a ton of talent remains don't mean loss and fire power. and striker nicholas full crew, but signing sarah. oh, good. i see. should feel the boy. it's the vincent company era and buyer and unit after a trophy with seizing the barbarians opted for the belgian who was kept in manchester city to lead the team back to winning way. i've made big steps all my life. so why would you then get to this position this place and all of a sudden you're going to stop doubting this, michael? all these a fresh from winning in olympic silver, metal for france has added excitement for a bi inside that also strengthen with the likes of here okey doke in joelle felina . besides promoting to the bonus league have different back story saying probably has returned to the top flight after 13 years fighting to get back. i'll be without
8:23 pm
bobby and hooks, less the code to mastermind. they're essentially based in henberg left leaving things. holly, as long stood for diversity and inclusion new comers, holstein keel had been on the verge of promotion several times over the past few years killed finally secured. they're made in german top flight season due to a never ending perseverance. last one is the good campaign shock. maybe, maybe this season will see the same level of excitement. all right, for more of the new business like a season, i'm joined here by chris harring and some dw sports. chris, good to see. so let's go, let's go through this. the, the, the title is in labor cruises hands after a magical run. last season. can they do it again? well, i think you have to look at the top of the club. jobby alonzo is, you know, every clubs, dream as a manager and he comes from that pedigree as a player. he's one things, and he did what committee thought was pickable. he shook off the never cruising label labeled off of a labor cruising. now they've won under a lot of those tenure,
8:24 pm
they've won 3 pieces of silverware in their history. they only have 5 and they've done very important things moving forward. they've retained their courts pallet, you know, they're court talent. and victor bought a face. patrick shake of florida advance jobs and saw their defender was trying to get lowered away by munich. we're trying to get negotiations done. they didn't bring a big enough bag of money to buy our labor. goes in to get that bill done. so i think retaining the core players, it gives job alonzo. the perfect chance. but the biggest thing is, last season they were the hunters this season. they're the huntington. yeah, we heard from byron's new coach in that report. what's your take on vincent company? well that's a company was not buyer minix 1st option. they want a job alonzo. they were searching all over europe for some big names that can get buyer, the domestic champions. the record champions in germany back on track. mm hm. they've dealt with vincent company, but it's a company really we know in from manchester city, he has managerial experience,
8:25 pm
but none that justifies him getting the position at your most visible club. in all of germany at byron munich, he has a big task on his shoulders, trying to get the club back to winning ways. and he's a tough cookie. you know, he doesn't miss words. he's a right in your face type of manager. there's been training footage released of him yelling at players in their faces, buyer need and kicking the but i think visit the company is the right. like his manager. what do so and plus, you know, just a bit of a social progression. you is the only black manager in all of the bonus leaves. i think that's a huge step in the right direction and a great opportunity for vincent. what about st pallet? holstein keel along with some of the new faces have joined the buddhist lee. good. what are your expectations? i got about what a minute. a minute while the promoted side st. polly, come with this huge beautiful cult following. they've lost a key player, lost their coats, a got the promotion, but nonetheless they have the whole city of hamburg pulling for them. because hamburg of the team, they've got relegated
8:26 pm
a few seasons back. still haven't found their way back, almost died, kill a different kind of story. you know, more of a cinderella story. they spent all of their, it's a 100 year history over one under your history, trying to get to the top division. they finally made it, and then the new faces around the league. are you going to look out for the bonus? like it's always known for this launching pad. big names come into bigger names. they may be go to bigger leagues, michael, all these a buyer's new comer, one a silver metal of paris? i think he's a good bid for the rookie of the year award. this is chris henry, who's always chris, going to have you in studio. thank you. thank you, us. all right, here is a recap of our top story. this our, a couple of harris says, formerly accepting the democratic nomination for us presidents in a passionate speech closing the democratic national convention in chicago. harris said out the vision for the future with this logan, we're not going back. you want to dw news? it will be back in 90 minutes with more world news followed by the day i hope to
