pagers carried by members of the around big militant group, hezbollah. hezbollah is blaming is real, is real, is saying nothing about the explosions. but on wednesday, these really defense minister said that the war is entering a new phase, that the center of gravity of the military is shifting from gaza in the south to the border with lebanon. in the north, i bring golf and berlin. this is the day. the, the scene was shocking how people would toner pause right in front of, you know, exploding right in front of you and my boss of 25 years. in practice. i never removed as many eyes as the disappear right to test that you meant here is the confusion that they've created among these. but i have this type of logic cause damage. we will retaliate. we have to teach them
2:03 am
a less than they can't forget those who orders and tell the dogs such an attack must be held to account because of the racing. very clever, very spoken. and i think, i think uh that'd be tested for to our viewers watching on tv as in the united states into all of you around the world. welcome. we begin today with the explosions and 11 and that may signal the beginning of a wider war. on wednesday, israel's defense minister, golan said the military's efforts are moving north to the border with 11 on the front line. and israel's conflict with has pull up. now when israel launched its attacks on her moss after the terror attacks of october 7th, last year, hezbollah began launching rockets from lebanon across the border into northern israel. in solidarity with tomas in gauze of thousands of israelis had been forced to leave their homes along the border for almost a year. israel's military has been folk, goes on destroying
2:04 am
a moss and gauze of the explosions this week of pagers and walkie talkies used by hezbollah appear to have been the 1st shots in what israel today said is the start of a new chapter in the war. as below has bound to hit back, it is real for now its members and many 11 non are still in shock. we have this report on a fresh wave of explosions across the web and on some of them at the funeral of 3 has the members and a child killed by exploding pagers the day before a source close to has been the end rescuer said walkie talkies used by the group exploded, as part of last heard and a route, and in the southern city of side in a cell phone shop caught fire after an explosion. there. the new blasts come as lebanon is still in shock. the day after what's been described as an unprecedented attack, hundreds of pagers used by the militia group has been blew up over about an hour,
2:05 am
killing at least a dozen people and injuring thousands. in the aftermath, many schools and shops are closed and residents are still reeling. automatic, what happened yesterday shocked us from them? it was unimaginable that no one could have thought that pages could explode like that. page of the vehicle. the scene was shocking. how people were toner pause right in front of you though. exploding right in front of you. and then the next one blast was caught on camera. in a statement read on lebanese television, hezbollah, which is considered a terrorist group by the you and others, placed the blame squarely on israel, and bowed to punish the perpetrators of the attack. some lebanese agreed with their message, but now we will retaliate. we have to teach them a less than they con, forget. because those people, if they are not complement,
2:06 am
they will not be deterred. many has been that members were using the pagers because the group leadership had thought the older technology could have a tracking bias. real security experts believe is real. spike agency massage was able to insert a small amount of explosives into devices somewhere along the supply chain before they reached has block. hospitals in bay roads have been overwhelmed with the sudden rush of patients, staff say they treated grisly wounds and the emergency doctor last night at the hotel the hospital. unfortunately, as everyone knows, we received injuries due to devices exploding and people's hands. some of the injuries were mainly to the eyes and hands which caused the finger amputations trapped on the eyes. some people lost their site. i don't know the tensions are running high in lebanon has but i has already fired some 20 rockets into israel on
2:07 am
wednesday in apparent retaliation for the attack. a dw use, they were bureau cheese mohammed trades and told me more about how the attacks have impacted as well as capability to operate. no doubt that this has massively disrupt that has been less operations and committed and control system. it is believed that hundreds, if not thousands, of as well as militants will be out of service at least for some time due to the injuries. this operation a today and yesterday obviously at aim to cut the means of communication between hospitalized alternatives. and the 2 boys died of harm to the group personnel, but also to cause more damage to the party members and supporters to break the trust that the militant group is capable of fighting and, and then and the keeping up against is right. i think that has the law would need some time to digest these, these events and find and turn out this to,
2:08 am
to store it's communication. and it's a command and control system, but also to restore the motors off. it's still present supporters that are completely shocked by the scale of these attacks. there was our baby bureau chief mohammed traces being with me earlier. the attacks on has below were carried out for us with pages and then with walkie talkies. but how i put that to just in campus. he's a professor in the computer science and engineering department at new york university to so what happens is these devices are such that you communicate over wireless networks, much like your cell phone or other things receive wireless signals. these can you signals in those bands and they can also use signals and other bands of the electromagnetic spectrum. and so what happens is that if you put a little bit of electronics inside of the device, like a page or a walkie talkie, and when it receives a signal, it can be, you know, a specific signal. it can then trigger something like an explosion. so then if it
2:09 am
has below it is be reported, it has below is using pagers to avoid surveillance, to protect itself, basically as opposed to using smartphones which can be traced as a. but what you're saying is that these features, these devices actually provide a no protection. well, what has will it did actually was a smart to try to protect against tracing because of things like a cell phone always have a, like a 2 way communication. it's your phone is going, communicating with the cell tower, you're making calls, you're sending data back and forth. whereas some devices, like a certain models of pagers, only receive information and they don't actually send any information back that does stop them from being traced. and so how well actually did a good thing from a security standpoint of making there be less information about where their specific members were by not having a bi directional communication to something like their pagers. so how sophisticated
2:10 am
then would this kind of operation be to execute having all of these devices exploded at the same time? and is this the type of operation that you would expect a state to execute? or could you see non state actors being behind as well? really the one of the most difficult parts was tampering with all of these devices before they got in the hands of hezbollah. and that is the type of thing that you basically need a state actor or something like that to go in and do. and then once you get to the point where you have all these devices that you want to tamper with it or in place, it is also something that's easier for someone like a state act or nation state to be able to do very you know, extensive resources are needed for a lot of this, but you can also see for certain weaker devices. you can imagine situations where other types of hacker groups or things could go and, you know,
2:11 am
take control of and cause damage to devices. um, we seen a lot of that, not necessarily in a wireless sense, but we've seen a lot of that before where there have been lots of, for instance, internet connected cameras and other internet connected devices that have been turned into parts of bought nets and used to launch the attacks on major tech sites and so on. i mean, you know, i, i get the impression that we're dealing with a completely new frontier of more fear here. and we're just beginning to to, you know, understand the dimensions of other devices that could possibly be tampered with and used as weapons could medical devices, pacemakers, for example. they're usually connected to a network. could they be targeted? absolutely. in fact, a vice president, a former vice president dick cheney, his pacemaker, was not network connected and needed special equipment for people to be able to
2:12 am
interact with it exactly to protect against this type of threat. and i think that this threat, you know, it's very common to think of things like medical devices and this is a very serious, very real threat. but there are other aspects out there that are also very, very serious threats. automobiles, for instance, the automotive industry has done a tremendous job of improving their security. but they're still is quite a long ways to go. and you can imagine what would happen if an organization is able to get in and disable the brakes. or, you know, force acceleration of a large number of cars in a major metropolitan area. it would be pandemonium. and that doesn't require any of the types of supply chain attacks that you saw here, which to me is really the newest thing about this type of attack. that is, you know, allegedly israel was able to go and interfere input exposes inside of a lot of these devices. you know, for the past 1015 years we've heard
2:13 am
a lot of appraise for the internet of things um a future where everything and everyone will be inter connected of what we've seen and living on in the past few days. should we see that as a, maybe a wake up call to the threats that we put ourselves into the dangers we put ourselves into by being connect as absolutely. um, in fact, one of the things that my wife and i agreed on was uh no internet connected devices in our household without me having a good look at them. and we have very little in there. i think a lot of security experts view them as risk, and yes, it's kind of cool that you can tap a button on your smartphone and maybe make a cup of coffee while you're still in bed. that might be a neat thing to do, but what that really means is that someone else across the internet can do things like cause or coffee maker to go on. and possibly,
2:14 am
if they know what they're doing and the coffee maker is not very well design, maybe even do things like start a fire in your home, or at a minimum know that your home know when you're, you're out on vacation so that people can rob you and so really internet of things have a massive risk surface. i think consumers don't really understand that. but, you know, talk to somebody who's a security expert and they will most likely not have a lot of those devices in their house. so i assume you don't have a smart refrigerator in your home for example. but you do have was smart refrigerator, no smart of, and no smart, anything. but you do have, why fi in your house? i assume you have a smart tv. is there any danger that a, a smart tv could that be a point of entry into a person's home that we hadn't thought of that? that could, you know, be a danger to i don't have a smart tv, but they are absolutely a point of feature. in fact, a lot of them, uh, the,
2:15 am
there was a scandal, a while ago where there's a manufacturer that effectively was streaming audio from consumers homes to a 3rd party that was supposed to do a recognition so that you do something like use a i commands to turn on your television or do other stuff like that. mm hm. and it's, it's things like televisions, smart tvs and stuff like this are just great for surveillance. if, if you were so inclined to do so, so you, you really should think about the risks. think about anything that your device can do. imagine that someone else can make your device, do that if it's an internet of things device, and in fact they can often do much more than you can do with it. so that should be something that should worry consumers. well, this is definitely been a maybe an over the reality check for a lot of people. professor justin campus with computer science and engineering at new york university professor. we appreciate your time and your valuable insights
2:16 am
tonight. thank you. thank you. we'd like to ship our focus now to is real. there's been no direct comment. no direct cling of responsibility by these really government regarding the explosion. 1011 on. i'm assuming israel was responsible. why now? in a moment, i'll put the question to a former head of the idea of strategic planning department. the 1st take a listen to what israel's defense minister said today while addressing is really soldiers the cause of it. although the center of gravity is moving to the north motion, that means we all debilitating forces, resources, energy towards the north quote. we have not difficult in the hostages familiar, and we have not forgotten all tasks in this house with a hook. this is on duty while we are performing unit at the same time, the whole, the whole, the whole thing with them will be on the i think that when you look at the picture of the situation of them. so the idea springs accident achievements. together with
2:17 am
sion but it's all together with most sides on all the bodies and all the frameworks . and of course, the results of the work is more impressive if it's all simple, told most she was doing now by itself or you and he's a reserved brigadier general with he is real defense forces. he was headed strategy for the idea from 2010 to 20. 15 is now an international fellow at the washington institute for near east policy, and he joins me tonight from washington. d. c general is good to have you. back with us here on the program. the major, the pagers of walkie talkies exploding in loving on hezbollah is blame me is real, us officials have said that is real, was behind this. who do you think is behind who profits? that's a basic uh good the question to, to begin with. and i think all of us as well as the enemies are
2:18 am
benefiting from from that. who, when you combine the big deal, that gets a big you need to, to perform such an attack. well, it's uh, probably as well. what is your then assessment of the damage or harm that has been done to hezbollah? physically hundreds of his by the people were severely injured. thousands were injured together with their walkie talkie effect. um, vehicles, offices command those uh, homes of, uh, she's by law fighters and members only of those privilege to a secure communication view of, of, of this movement is they're going to zation were exposed to that. so physically
2:19 am
there's a major disruption in the command information. the levels and the major disruption of communication, but also major, undermining in the staggering blow of the organizations. trust image or security is a feeling of being corporate compromises and exposed to inspiration, penetration manipulation of breaching of. and so security actually uh says by law is the one who shows the target please. by deciding who gets a secure uh, communication here um from uh, from its own inventory. this seems also to have been a brilliant way to out any members of health below who were hiding to reveal that they were members of as below simply by the fact that they had a pager in their pocket. yes,
2:20 am
but whoever i want to them is actually is butler handing out those trojan pagers or trojan the walkie talkies. and it's i'm like what the of being discussed before about being an internet of things. these are not to be 9 civilian elements or, or articles that you can buy or online. these are dedicated, secure systems that is by law, operates in order to reserve operational security and to continue or it's their campaign against this one and others in the, in the, in the middle east. so the, the main benefit here on the strategic level is sending a message to his bottle. you can continue to contend that your, uh, those it's showing. so the diary do it from us and you want start. uh you want to stop attacking, use of gaza comes down. but your attempt to
2:21 am
hold to both not getting to a full scale war and uh, showing for the diety this equation might not work. so uh so well, and you need to consider the growing costs of that policy choices that you, that you've made today. israel's defense manager said that israel is that the opening of the new phase of the war with the center of gravity moving north, where the page or the walkie talkie blast were they the warning shots ahead of an, an attack ahead of a wider war. and uh we're uh, actually discussing longer attrition worse is october 8th, when he's by law decided to attack is reading solely 90 and we've been exchanging blows. uh since then. uh, to, to great effect the sun would st but not to a point when that is valid. besides to stop it. and even the,
2:22 am
the only option of stopping it is reliant on on the ceasefire agreement in gaza, which does not seem to be within reach. so these wanting shots uh, in addition to movement of forces 2 statements to cabinet. the meetings discussing the role. busy in the northern theater is actually all the shots are saying that easily we're not accept for the long term, the continuation of these attrition playing biases by those terms. the game is about to change off is by the is advised to reconsider or face the consequences. yeah. you said the game is about to change these really government, the prime minister. you know, they said from day one of the war in gauze or that success will be the total destruction of a moss. so what does the shift of the military's focus tell us?
2:23 am
it tells us that uh, from a military point of view, most of the achievements, the median tree achievements as understood by the idea are close to, to being called the complete most of the how much units where dismantled defeated most of his productions sides were destroyed. uh, its uh main assets its uh warehouses, its rocket launchers, owners, these as being heavy uh, heavy damage. and now the level of intensity of operations in gauze i itself, it allows us to shift some forces and the most savvy antoine is the movement of the 98th commando division from the south to the north. this division was very active in the off, off in the, in the, in the one eunice in the northern now far as
2:24 am
a fund garza. and it shows us that most of the job is over and now it's needed up no computer to do what is more or less. so let me just see if i could into judge jose, are you saying that the, the, the idea of can say, can declare mission accomplish now in gaza against emma? so that the, the idea of seeing is that the field from us is the multi year may be backwards. the mission that it's understood that the main staggering effect needs to happen with intensive fine services the in wide maneuvering. and later on, the next phase is, is incurring a recurring rates in, into the, into the strip and destroying the researching and the re emerging. how much units. ok, it means that the, you can, you can also use a force as inc decreased in gaza. and is increasing in the no,
2:25 am
this and if this does become a wider, more pulling in iran for example, is, is real. the military is it setup, is it prepared for this becoming a larger conflagration? we are prepared as much as we can be prepared after a year of of uh, fighting experience as a. busy on uh, rolling off uh, bucket games where it came with the casualties. uh, we have uh, thousands of insurance. hundreds of of, uh, last uh, fatalities and soldiers. uh, we have the october 7th. um, shock. still the longest. and uh we, we seems, this is uh, fighting for our lives we, we 5 uh with our best efforts. uh, but with the greatly appreciate the handful, far strongest satellite and the united states of america. we've got about
2:26 am
a minute left general. you know, you and i, we spoke 10 months ago when unity was very high in israel. it is rarely said that they supported the military's goal of removing the home off threats and returning all of the hostages. what condition is, is really unity in tonight. it's a very. busy and part of our perseverance so far cohesion of our national and i, i could say, backbone, opposing the my so issue of, of the idea. but unfortunately, you can't divide the politics from a war. and as clouds of it said, this war as well as the many others is the continuation of politics. by other means, the only problem is that is domestic funding and not just for invoicing reserve idea of bringing in general,
