based on baseless and that there is no evidence for them seeing that they hurt their community and that they have indeed brought unwanted attention, but my, from my reporting speaking to a, some locals of springfield, they really don't care what their officials say. and they certainly some of them still certainly believed despite these statements. and despite there being no evidence of, of pets being kidnapped and eaten by my friends, that migrants are doing so. so it's a, it's often time walking through this town. there are different realities living in close proximity side by side. and it's, it's very, it's a sort of a microcosm in the, of the polarization that can be seen in so many parts of american society ahead of the selection. 4 years ago, the editors and the magazine scientific american endorse to joe biden,

is the editor in chief of scientific american, laura hel moves, she joins me from washington, dc. laurie, it's good to have you back on the show again. 4 years ago, almost 4 years ago. exactly. you said that you were counting on president biden to reconnect the us to science as he delivered to this. thank you for having me. and thanks for asking. he has not as much, of course is as we would like there's, there's always more to be done. but i think the, the 1st sign that he was committed to science was when he rejoined the parents climate agreements. and that was one of the 1st things he did as president. and if you recall, one of the 1st things uh president trump did in 2016 or when he came into office in 2017 was pull the united states out of the parish climate agreement. and so from the very beginning they were sending signals of your truck, it has called climate change of hoax. the fight in ministration with vice president harris has been very supportive assignment action. and we think that's just that,

you know, obviously there's an emergency facing all of us in the world that requires international collaboration. and we think that the fight in harrison ministration has done a great job so far. was that it was gonna ask you there between 24 year again, endorsing and candidates. this one being somebody here is what's different this time around other than the democratic candidates, may i guess. so i think we've, we've got some word stream on both sides. i think, you know, as in your last segments, trumps has become even worse, are kind of unhinged from reality. he's, he has his reading these conspiracy theories about people eating pets and you, knowingly causing impressive violence to, to immigrant communities. he continues to call fine or change your hopes. i there, he's done all kinds of things to show that he's not accepting a reality. and of course, the biggest one is still denying that he lost the election in 2020. and then on the

other side, you know, i think the vitamin in his abiding harris administration has done more to mitigate climate change to any presidential administration in the past. and harris is even more committed. her plans go beyond what i find has done so far. um to uh, to really do even more to improve i've seen energy to advance electric vehicles more more regulations, well, protections for the environments and she's just super supportive of science and health care. and those are, you know, we, we just think that he didn't even clear a choice this time, but it was last time i'd like to ask you about some numbers that, that came out here. research reports that the majority of americans think it is important for the us to maintain its global leading scientific achievements. but when it comes to trusting sciences to do the right thing for society, that number has fall and 14 percent in the past 4 years. of where did you place the

blame for that? yeah, and that number, it's interesting that numbers of course, for overall. but what we're really seeing is a waiting difference between what conservatives think about science and what liberals do. or, you know, democrats and republicans and the respect for and trust and sciences is increased study among democrats. and it just keeps dropping them on republicans. and, you know, there's, there's definitely a debate within to the science communication community about it. you know, are we for the size of science? are we? is it sciences fault? and from my perspective, it's not at all. i think it's been politicized from the other side. we certainly saw during the 10 democrats that conservatives were very against mass doing a good stuff seems against any kind of public health protections. and in the united states, especially, there's been a 100 years of kind of anti science rhetoric from conservatives. so starting with a, we had a famous trial called the scopes monkey trial that basically charged

a science teacher with breaking the law for teaching about evolution. and from that on it's been a really um, bifurcated the system where the conservatives have been rejecting of tobacco studies, climate science, evolution basically any, any kind of scientific discoveries has been very slow to size. well, what do you say to your critics? i mean, you know, you've been criticized for politicizing the scientific community with, with the endorsement. i also found that there is this professor of ecology and evolution at the university of chicago. i think his name is jerry coin, jerry cole. and he says that you're under your leadership, scientific american, has neglected science in favor of pushing a progressive id. ology, does he have a point there? i mean, is there, as you say, really a democratic version of science and a republican version of science. you know,

i think yeah, yeah, jerry's either jerry has a lot of time on his hands. he spends a lot of time criticizing us. we have not neglected science. we cover all the non political science just as much as we ever did. we've got a great story coming out on lucy. the officer looked at it guess if possible. we've got a lot of coverage of dark energy, dark matter, chemistry, biology. all the science that really doesn't, you know, makes the news. except when there's some great discovery in terms of what we cover that has to do with politics, we think it's our responsibility to share what we know about the science of abortion, access of transgender health care of climate science, and how important it is to expand access to the health care and how it can be live, save, and as you are experienced health access to all of these are are things that are study by science that are part of science. and so we feel like is part of our mission to help people understand?
