something like one hour. and it was the booming, like a crazy all the shows that was what was, was booming. and when we went out, we seen all the damage. that was the all the, all the complex including all the, all the houses. i see, where's the world going to and i don't, i don't feel comfortable with it. and i hope everything is going to be good. and rainy and state television published these images of what it claimed were missiles being launched. the footage could not be independently verified. in tier on supporters of the government gathered to celebrate runs, revolutionary guard said the assault was in retaliation for the recent killings of

him boss and his ball, the leaders and his really military operations in level known and gaza. israel's prime minister benjamin netanyahu set a run, made a grave mistake, say no more, but like we will uphold the rule. we have set scott, whoever attacks us, we attack them. this holds true wherever we fight the axis of evil telephone and somebody in between the visual t. ron has warned israel against heating back, threatening another response of its own, which many fear could push the middle east closer to a wider war. our correspondence on your kramer is covering the story for us in jerusalem and told us more about the aftermath of the attacks on israel as well. i think a lot of people have woke up done taking stock of what happened last night, the small, the unprecedented ms. a, a talk when you know the alarms where a tree good across the country, you could see it on this out. that is of most people's phone here. everything was
9:05 am
read. people taking shelter on in, on a, you know, protected spaces to have one or just taking cover of wherever they ran. now, this didn't, didn't come totally without warnings to have been some and reports by intelligence that an attack by iran was immune and, and also you run, it said that it will retaliate uh for the targeted destination of pharmacy. that is meant honey, a back in july and over the weekend. the coming off as well as you know, her son is running out. of course. when it came, it came with full force, and most people he has been talking to last night said they haven't seen something like this. now, most of those missed thoughts where intercepted on iran had said then on the of these hypersonic a so cause part of miss us and, and it was intercepted by the region a, l i c a,
9:06 am
the u. s. and or other countries in the region. but some also hit the ground and it appears that the target swimming the military facilities here. but again, the feeling was that was, this was all over the country. now the f us had said the fully operational because some of them inside the printer hit me a, an app is in the south. it's not fully disclosed. also intelligence basis, but the damage has been rather limited as far as your understanding where some fires some hits and open areas. but there has also been a one casualty reported by the public opinion rescue services in the occupied a westbank opposed to the men was killed. now israel hasn't turned promised retaliation. what reaction can we expect? i was saying this is very much what's being discussed. you know, and the government is still in security consultations about that actually,
9:07 am
but be heard it already after the attack, a prime minister been, you mean it in y'all's threatened a severe retaliation and he said it was a great mistake. and uh, that evolved to pay for this attack, we already saw overnight is were continuing its attacks on areas in southern lebanon and also in southern bay route. but also there were a tax and a at, in gaza. but at the same time, of course, experts you're saying is where there is a sense is that it has to retire to this and has to be, this has to be severe. now this discussion, what targets that would be, that could be infrastructure to be seen that back in april when there was a 1st attack by iran is very retaliated in a limited way. but this could be much more severe from, you know, targeted us as the nation's again, maybe the infrastructure. this even talk about targeting nuclear facilities. so we have to wait and see. we are expecting of retaliation within days. that is what the
9:08 am
experts here are saying. it w correspond antonio kramer in jerusalem, thank you. and we can get some more context with ben. i'm ben teller, blue, who focuses on iran at the foundation for defense of democracies in washington dc. welcome back to the show. now this is the 1st time iran has targeted israel directly since april, but this attack was different, wasn't it? a yes indeed. and pleasure be back with you. this attack literally doubled the scale on the scope of the previous attack. if there were about a 100 to a 120 ballistic missiles, up to largest reg, package of 300 projectiles last go round naples. this one feature just shy of 200, about 181 reported a medium range ballistic missiles launch from the running territory directly of israel. unlike the previous rank, however, this was not combined with lower and lower flying projectiles that the coalition in
9:09 am
the past was able to shoot down for even getting these really territory. those types of project house related fact cruise missiles and suicide drones. another more difference, of course, is the fact that in the previous generation, it was about a 10 or 12 data liter, publicly i worked to run, threatened revenge, and indeed reportedly even worn to international interlocutors. this time to run lightly, threatened revenge, and delayed that revenge after the killing of any uh and only gave anywhere between the 2 and the 4 hour heads up. so what do we double the scale and significantly shrunk, wanting time. israel has about to retaliate. what do you think is real good target in iran and is iran prepared for it? it well, i think the easier question if you're looking at this one military perspective at the level of compared that despite these monica public, having uh, several advanced russian air defense systems in several domestically reverse
9:10 am
engineered air defense systems. even in the previous generation, when the is rallies responded to the april, 13 april 14 attack the these realize were able to penetrate it, running your states with projectiles and target and radar of the most advanced russian provided air defense system. yes, 300. so the chances of a successful aerial interception by these monica public at the run is pretty much close to neil, the kind of deterrence there is even gauges and is often determined by punishment rather than insurance. by now, that's the 1st part of your question, that really is the $1000000.00 question right now about the timing of the scale of the scope of the is really military response is being debated. that response is probably not going to be limited to just inside a ron, even though the range of targets would include anything from the nuclear program to military facilities. that missile and drone program, the storage facilities there, you name it, and you look at the things that have been subject to cyber attacks or, or, or corporate access medic, sabotage in the past. it could be a very,
9:11 am
very wide list. plus of course a holding, i'd be running an interest abroad. i'd be at the proxies weapons, depos orland restructure across the region. you name it, but one thing i can tell you that probably will be a more difference from the april is really response, is that in april 19th, these really did not claim the attack my thing for public diplomacy and that determines purposes. they might actually claim this attack now, and we're looking at a textbook tit for tat here aren't we? and iran says it doesn't want an all out war with israel, but i want to ask you is not precisely what the region is spiraling towards. and indeed, as we get closer to the lead, october 7, a terrorist attack anniversary, and that touched office regional kind of a gratian. you have his real fighting something of a 6 or 7 front war, depending on how you count. and indeed, we are already in the midst of something of the regional more just depends on the, the level of ferocity and intensity and the geographic domain that you're looking
9:12 am
at this think through and with respect, you mentioned textbooks, this entire ordeal from april to present as shattered textbooks, i mean, if you look at 2024 in the 1st 4 months of 2024 is monica public. i've run a non nuclear weapon states overtly directly and conventionally attack to nuclear arm nations and live to tell the tale. that's something during the cold war night of the soviet union north america did. and that's something now in the post cold war period. neither one, there are no rush to have done. so it has really shattered presidents here and the missile port braj that expired. just the other night, 181 projectile is 181 medium range, ballistic missiles that 2 marks the largest single ballistic missile garage and 119 record of history. so much more to get to but unfortunately we'll have to leave it there. then i'm going to label around analyst with the foundation for the defense of democracies. many things, great speaking to you. thank you to take

a look at some other stories making headlines in the middle east today. and telling me there's really police say at least 6 people were killed and a shooting and stabbing attack that happened minutes before iran launched those themselves at israel 9 people were also injured in what police have called a terror attack. authority say the perpetrators were shot dead by officers and civilians. the palestinian health authorities says at least 32 people have been killed and is really strikes and found operations in southern gaza. hospital officials and con eunice sent the victims including women and children. israel has not yet commented on the incident authorities and 11 on say at least 5 is really strikes hip, the southern southern of the capital bear route overnight is really our me says it was targeting has boss sites. it also said it's infantry and armor units are joining the ground operation 11 on this came after iran launched it's miss out

attack on israel overnight in the united states, the 2 men competing to be the next slice president trade and barbs and argued over policies in their only debate, democratic candidates and walls and republicans 80 vans kept it civil as they met in new york. but fans did his best to characterize the democratic presidential nominee commer harris as a source of america's ills walls. on the other hand, laid out a list of ways he believes harris's rival, republican, former president donald trump, would divide americans. claudio hampshire, kicked off the debate of the full political rivals. j. d. yvonne sent him, wolves began me a pitch to vote, hits the debate focused on policies including migration and donald trump's false claims about stations, asian pits in springfield, ohio. but by standing with donald trump and not working together to find
9:15 am
a solution, it becomes a talking point. and when it becomes a talking point like this, we did humanize in billing eyes, other human beings. we want to have j. d von police ahead his microphone count as he trying to talk beyond his allocate to the higher on the issue. the audience can't hear you because your mikes are caught. we have so much we want to get to thank you for explaining the legal process. pointed questions on healthcare, housing, the economy and abortion access revealed vastly different visions for the us. we have a partial birth abortion ban in this, in place in this country at the federal level. i don't think anybody's trying to get rid of that, or at least i hope not. but i know that democrats have taken a very radical pro. abortion stands not senator, but the debates remain largely civil with any attacks reserved for the candidates running manuals. we have 2 minutes, we're going to be careful about the quotes, but there's one that senator benz said, that doesn't resonate with me. he said donald trump makes the people i care about afraid. a lot of america feels that way is i believe it whether you're rich or poor,
9:16 am
you ought to be able to afford to buy a house. you ought to be able to live in safe neighborhoods. you all did not have your communities flooded with bit know and that to has gotten harder with college because of come over here is his policies, the performance that a refreshingly amiable time and a mid a contain just campaign with less than 5 weeks until election day came talking about the debate without a reward or statement. there's least david, the headlines are that this was a very polite, very midwestern debate. but some of the part from the debate between harris and, and trump a come. busy weeks ago. right, absolutely. i mean, you and i were talking about this earlier. when you look at the past debate, especially when trump has been involved, this could almost seem, refreshing, almost seems sort of antiquated. it was discussion about child care policies, health care policies. imagine such a thing taking place under the circumstances of the past 6 years. and it's very clear that both candidates wanted to pursue this strategy. we expected this somewhat from waltz. he's supposed to be america's coach. he's supposed to project
9:17 am
war, but he's supposed to be the father figure. we did not expect that as much from vance, but he went on his way to be accommodating. he often said, i agree with him here. he would begin his answers that way. and it was very clear that both sides saved their fire power for the presidential candidates, trump, and harris. at the same time, i find that this was a bit deceptive as well, because we know that the politics of both sides are so divergent. there's so distinct donald trump is a once in a lifetime figure i would say in terms of his political career about his political draw and vance. what he did was he was able to soften that image a good deal and talk about policy and waltz. couldn't really get his claws into that. he was so busy being nice, being approached by whenever he did, try and approach that and sort of go after vans a little bit. he never knew the right time the right way to go with. i'll give you one example. there was at the very beginning, vance talks about trump was the only president or the most recent president was
9:18 am
there was no major american conflict started. this was the time of which walter to come in and said, what about january 6th? what about the attack on the capital? he missed that it was only later in the debate when these things came out. so he's basic income grew and sees of a trump presidency, the chaos, the bigness that you have mass deportations. the causing us with dictators all of this was left behind to have what would seem like an old policy debate. and i think that's an internal structure of this debate format. unfortunately, we have a candidate like donald trump. yeah. all eyes on these 2 man who was under more pressure to perform well last night. i believe it was bands. i mean, others would argue waltz, but i believe it was vance, given the recent comments that are become very wide spread about, you know, it's how this cat ladies has perceptions of the role of the family, the role of a woman in the family, what he talked about with, with patient immigrants, for example, in springfield, ohio, what came up during the trump debate with harris actually reflected back on that because he began this whole thing about asian immigrants in springfield, ohio, eating people's pets. this plays into the immigration debates of the kind of hard
9:19 am
line they want to take. so by softening his image, he really was able to push a lot of that away. but a lot of his answers at the same time, they weren't very complete, he would begin processing integration is not the cause of everything. and then we come back at the end of the day, but that's why these people need to leave our country mediately. there are a lot of holes in here and waltz again, couldn't quite dig in and expose some of those mistruths. nope, that experts say that v p debates do little to sway motors on either side. so you think this one's going to be different? i don't know, it is a difficult question. we know that a bad performance is more likely to weigh on a ticket then a good performance is likely to help it. i would say that's for vance. he definitely didn't hurt his ticket. and waltz may have a little bit, but we will have to see and erase as close as this one. you would have to think that every performance could matter that every that the optics of every debate really does matter. i think in that sense bands really did for the his cause, but it and waltz in that sense didn't really help their calls in a sense of being able to say, this is not a normal ticket. this is not a normal campaign. you probably should have interrupted more,
9:20 am
he probably should have really interjected more to really underline that point. and that's something he didn't do. that's just my opinion watching this, looking at how divergent, again, these 2 campaigns and the politics of the more and how much of a unique agent of chaos, donald trump, is even barely. thank you so much. and a quick look at some more stories from around the world, canada as prime minister, has to refine just 2nd confidence motion in 2 weeks on position. conservatives are trying to unseat just entry though we've been governing since 2015 as approval ratings have plummeted. as canadian struggle with high living costs and lack of affordable housing choice, it's the us hip hop mobile shawn to be combs is facing a wave of new lawsuits from a 120 people for alleged sex crimes. as according to a lawyer, breeding the cases, some of the accusers say they were minors at the time of the alleged misconduct combs is currently being held in prison on charges, including sex,
