the, the, this is the w news lie from berlin, is world pummels 11 east capital as it expands its military operations against the militant groups as beloved witnesses. and the analysts say is the most intense compartment of a root since the beginning of israel's incursion. as a groups are scrambling to give much needed assistance to this place, people in lebanon latasha, the leader of an organization to provide medical and mental health care to children in the

american evans dean. welcome to the program. israel is pressing ahead with its attacks against has the law as ears, price against lebanon's, capital bare root continue into another night. these really armies says it is now killed some $440.00 of the militant groups. fighters during is ground incursion into 11 on this comes as israel prepares to mark the anniversary of mazda is terror attacks and october 7th, which sparked it's military operations. and it comes as the united nations refugee agency chief philipo grande's is in be rude. he set a states fire was needed as soon as possible. adding the 11 on is in a major displacement crisis. lebanese government officials estimate that 1200000 people are now displaced and speaking in a news conference and be rude. grande's said the strikes were not legal, so we need to respect for civilian infrastructure and civilian

population. unfortunately, many instances of about your nations of international humanitarian law. in the way the air strikes are conducted that have destroyed or damaged civilian infrastructure. and we can now speak to ruth michelson, a journalist who is in be rude. ruth, after last night's intense, is really airstrikes over the city. what is the situation right now? well, i think it's fair to say that a lot of people in bay route, but feeling fearful of the night that happened last night, the lebanon's national news agency and said that they were more than 30. is there any strikes that hit the southern suburbs as a re, it's considered to be one of the west 9th of strikes. but since israel expanded its attacks across lebanon, on the 23rd of september,
8:03 pm
that were reports of firewalls. nice thing up the sky of, of, of a root. and it's understood that the targets were a petrol station. and a hotel near murphy, courier re add port, which is one of the only ways out for a lot of people in lebanon. and so that's obviously creating some increased fair and i need some other people have these really army has issued evacuation notices for several towns in the south of lebanon. has there been a reaction from has belong well, you're right. he is raining home issued evacuation notices for 26 towns across the southern lebanon. they ordered people there to evacuate immediately. we haven't seen an immediate reaction from has bull. uh, what we've seen today is an increased number of funeral notices for the fights is acknowledging that they are incurring losses in the south. but the way that has
8:04 pm
bullet has positioned themselves with regard to the fighting that's happening, at least to the follow is or to notice people in lebanon, is that this is a fight for them along 11 in southern border. the with the one that maybe there were some losses incurred to them the way, but they are in their own words, determined to have victory. and that suddenly reaction that we're seeing also along that some of the people who were displaced from the southern suburbs as they route . also, as we mentioned, the head of the united nations refugee agency was in be root. and he talked about the tragic, told that the war has taken more than a 1000000 people in living on display so far. how is the lebanese government coping with a situation? and is anybody helping these people as well? you are absolutely right. i mean, the displacement crisis that is happening in lebanon is enormous. it would be
8:05 pm
a lot for any government to deal with people pouring into a route. many people are going north of pay route as well. and you can see across the street to the capital that, that all people sleeping in the street because of this, the government, excuse me, the united nations have said that um, almost 900 government wrong schools that are being used as desperately under funded make shift shelters these are basically full at the moment. and so we see that the, the major bronx of space massive response is being borne by the local community initiatives by private citizens wanting to help a spoken to people who was sleeping in what was previously a night club. and the people running that night club said we opened the doors to them because we wanted to make sure that these people would like to see people in the open, sweeping in on the streets. and so, obviously,
8:06 pm
some feeling about the fact that it is the community, it is the average person that is being pressured to do something to help these people, rather than the government of lebanon, that was journalist ruth michelson, reporting from b routes. many thanks. indeed, we appreciate it. and we can now speak to our with damon, she's the president and founder of the nora, the international network for air relief and assistance. and she joins us from the root are, well, we know that your organization provides medical and mental health care to children in words zones. can you tell us about what you are witnessing in the south of they have roots right now as well. we actually have been working 11 on since 2015. i was based here in my former position, my former life sort of as a senior international correspondent for uh, cnn. and so this is a country that i know very,
8:07 pm
very well and what we are seeing across a route and a lot of these other areas where people are sheltering is this prevalent fear that continues to chase and haunt them. and that is because people here for the last year have been watching what has been happening in gaza. and there is a sense that this is unlike any sort of israel has spa ward that has taken place before. this is not exactly what 2006 was, and they do feel as if this time around it is going to be much more violent. and in fact, it already has been much more violent because the general is by far surpassed israel has been let you 10064. and they're also well aware of what happened in 2006, which is what spotted the emergence of what's known as the doc doctrine adopting the south bay root has fullest stronghold and the doctor,
8:08 pm
the doctor. and as he is really military strategy, that effectively calls for causing maximum civilian harm. be that harm to critical infrastructure or harm to civilians themselves. the largest being that the civilian population will then turn against the entity with him as a israel. it's going to war. but if we look at what happened 1st 2006 has been merged even stronger than before. and it quite simply menu will say, is the strategy that doesn't work, but it is a strategy right now that the lebanese are very, very much on the receiving end up as well as of these really army targets. this has the last stronghold in the south of a root. it is calling on civilians to evacuated from the area. but is it even possible for families to get to safety in the city? well, that's what's becoming increasingly difficult because the shelters are completely full. there's no infrastructure to be able to adequately how was feed and provide
8:09 pm
for all of those who have been playing. we're talking about, you know, around a quarter of the population here. $1200000.00 people that have come under evacuation order and we is 8 organizations. i mean, we're just, we're scrambling, you know, you, you, you receive supplies, we received, you know, hundreds of mattresses and we went out and you know, they're gone in the day because the need is so great and it's so wide spread all over, all of the country especially when it comes to some of the sort of harder to reach areas like the back of valley where i was um, earlier today trying to get mattresses to a couple of locations there. and one was a town that was housing, 3000 internally displaced people that they actually only had 300 mattresses. so we were able to sort of supplement that a little bit. but the bottom line is, i mean, know people don't necessarily feel safe and the locations that they are slain to because there happened bombings in areas where they would have thought that they would be safe. and also because sheltering humanitarian assistance,
8:10 pm
the whole system hasn't really sorta settled and begun functioning the way that it is meant to function because the space and the resources quite simply aren't there . well, even before this conflict to 11 on was facing enormous problems including a government that was not functional. so is there anyone who can offer help and protect the people of loving on and how can the international community perhaps support the lebanese government? well, when it comes to protecting the people of love and on from israel, many here will tell you that there's only one country that can actually do that. and that is the united states actually, you know, using what needs to be done using real pressure points to sort of rain in israel bombing campaign across this entire country and try to push forward some kind of a political resolution to all of this. there is no entity inside living on that can actually guarantee the safety of delivering these people. and it's not lost on
8:11 pm
anyone that you know, has butler falls outside of the armed forces of the 11 east governments. and yet is significantly significantly stronger than 11 these army itself. but irrespective of that, there really is this sense that right now it's 11. use that have to stand up and come together uh for the 11 years. and this is something that has been a veteran reality for decades, not really to a certain extent, but especially in the last 5 years i've been coming to live in on constantly on is actually based here for years. i've been coming in and out since 2003, but especially over the last 5 years i've kind of watch the, the light as out of the eyes of, you know, this population that is so much better known for it sort of, she watches the ability to withstand anything because you have the 2015 complete and total economic collapse, you have the vast majority of the populations savings basically stolen by a corrupt political lead. you had the 2020 day report blast, you had cove it and now you have this and it's basically as you know,
8:12 pm
a friend of mine was messaging me, especially after the patron walk you talked to you is actually sent me or what, what is this this is like science fiction. we're, we're in purgatory that was armin damon, president and founder of the nora, the international network for air release and assistance. thank you so much for all of your insights or well, tens of thousands have joined anti war demonstrations around the world before mondays, anniversary of the home of terror attacks against israel and the start of the war and gone. some protesters called for a cease fire in both guns and 11 on the spanish capital of madrid was the scene of one of the biggest pro palestinian protest in europe. thousands gathered on the streets of madrid to demand to cease firing garza and to show support for the palestinian people. # protesters in rome demonstrated
8:13 pm
peacefully until a smaller group clashed with police who tried to block them from entering the city center at demonstrations in london. thousands called for an end to the escalating conflict in the middle east, one year after the october 7th attacks. any is real going on for? yeah, i'm not comfortable with that side. comedy. so really suffering from this just must be some believable people are going to involve the protests ranged far beyond europe as well. like here in the indian city of bang, the lower and in cape town, where demonstrators marched to the south, african parliament africans only to unite to stand up against what israel is doing
