more day. just one more day in the most consequentially less than of our lifetime. and the momentum is on our side. the former us president and republican dominique donald trump, delivering his closing speech in michigan. another battle ground stays where he rode tomorrow we can fix every single problem. our country faces the beautiful that is new. i joined on stage by his children. trump told his supporters, the election is in their hands. yes, we are old enough to deal with what we have at the stroke of midnight election day began with voting in a tiny town on shift in new hampshire. the results,

we're seeing americans around the country had to the pools to cast their violet and what will be a 1st for whoever wins the white house is a vice president campbell of hers. when she'll be the 1st woman. she'll be the 1st woman of color, and if donald trump returns to the white house, he'll be the 1st convicted felon to be president of the united states. what can you tell us about the voter turnout sofa? well, it is difficult to be able to say just how many people will cast their ballots by the end of this elections pools have not opened in all the states yet. but according to the associated press to over 82000000 americans have trust their ballots. in early a voting, a mailing ballots and such, and that's a little bit more than half of all the votes costs in the previous election of

4 years ago. and certainly there have been huge attempts by both campaigns to try to get out the boat as much as possible as this will probably come down to a razor thin margins in swing states, unless there's a big surprise that we're about to find out in the next couple of days for hard. both couple of harris and donald trump have held the last rallies. uh, what was the impression that certainly it's no coincidence that both have chosen the state of pennsylvania. for their last a riley's, i've heard people say it almost feels sometimes like this entire election is being played out in pennsylvania. it's one of these, a battle ground swing states that we have a been talking about. and joe biden wanted back from donald trump with a very thin margin in 2020,
3:07 pm
and from one the state in 2016 also with a very thin a margin. in terms of the riley's themselves, we saw kind of a hard stick the stage with a whole host of celebrities, including oprah winfrey, who brought 1st time voters to the stage. the unsafe was also one of the vice president raleigh's. and we've heard donald trump sort of a poke fun at beyond say, seeing that people would come to the rallies, expecting certain songs, and that then they wouldn't be played and there would be no joy, but certainly not a coincidence that both candidates have chosen pennsylvania as one of the last stops in this campaign which has now effectively come to an end b, w, special correspondent abraham, the revolt due from washington. thank you. and now we've seen the harrison's trunk contains drop a vast amount of time on money into a handful of swing states, especially during the rest of the country. under the us electrical system,
3:08 pm
the winter of the race for the white house doesn't need to win the popular vote. w's. i'm in a safe, explains why the us selection is supposed to represent the will of the people. but does it the us has an electoral college system, which means of a candidate wins the vote and a handful of states where the races are tight called swing states. they can win the white house without winning the popular vote nationwide. it's happened only 5 times in american history, but 2 of those times we're in the last 25 years. and polls indicate it could happen again this november the, here's how the system works for presidential candidate to when they have to get the most electoral votes. those are votes cast by state electors who represent the winner of the popular vote in each state or the number of electoral votes each state has is based on its population size. in any candidates who wins the vote in the state, but even the smallest majority gets all the states electoral votes with exceptions
3:09 pm
and 2 small states, main in nebraska. that system has led to situations like in the 2000 election when republican george w bush won the state of florida by 537 votes, handing him the white house, even though his opponent won over half a 1000000 more popular votes in 2016, it happened again. republican donald trump won the election with a wide margin of electoral votes, even though his democratic opponent, hillary clinton, received 2800000 more popular votes. overall. the electoral college has tended to favor republicans for out of the 5, so called minority presidents and us history, where republicans, there's never been a democratic minority president, may fully execute the office of president. one argument in favor of the electoral college is that the us as a federalist system, meaning states are meant to have a voice and national politics, regardless of how many people lived there. it sometimes seems no one likes it, but that doesn't mean that it's easy to challenge because it is
3:10 pm
a voice for the stats. and it's often felt that without the voice, but the steps presidential elections would be for a different time. much time would be start campaigning, only handle our 6 stuff. but critics say the electoral college has become outdated and point out that the us is the only presidential democracy in the world are candidate can get them. majority of votes and still lose. there have been a few attempts to reform or overturn the electoral college. none of them so far successful, but of 2024 gives to us yet another minority president, especially one is divisive. as donald trump approval ratings for the current system are likely to hit an all time low us. now let's dig a bit deeper into that subject uh with the help of lauren's douglas. he's a professor of low and social thoughts and his college in massachusetts. he's also written several books about donald trump, professor, do us elections trudy represent the will of the people
3:11 pm
have no they, they don't. i mean, in as much as what we just heard in the description of electoral college to the extent that someone who actually loses the popular vote can be elevated to the most powerful position in government, not just in this country, but arguably in the world. i suggest that the system is not functioning as an expression of the will of the people. now, if that's the case, what do you make of the argument that the electoral college system is needed to give states say in federal politics? well, 1st of all, i've been re, elected president is not states that are looking the president, it, it should be the american people who are electing the president. so it doesn't make a whole lot of sense to have a federal rated process for electing the president of united states. i mean the present, after all, is a national figure, not a figure who represents the interest of specific states. so i don't think that
3:12 pm
logic, particularly parts has been, uh very well. and, you know, consider the following. imagine that you are creating an electoral system, which let's say, gave voters in a small state such as wyoming for votes, and gave voters in a large states such as california one vote. i think everyone would agree that that system is manifestly and democratic and unfair. and yet that in effect is exactly what the electoral college does. it gives certain people in certain states a weight or vote in determining the outcome of who will be the president then citizens in other states. now looking at history and we've heard about that in the report, the system has the benefit of republican president. can you help us understand why that is? well, in particular, let's focus in recent history. so we already know that in this century alone, we have george
3:13 pm
w bush and donald trump being elected despite having lost the national popular vote . and because we have this kind of odd winter take all system in which arguably smaller states and swing states have this disproportionate ability to determine the outcome of the election of those same states, simply have, you know, just as a demographic reality, they tend to be wider more world and more conservative and, and as, as, as a consequence, um, it just favors republicans at this particular moment in our history. now let's move on to a different subject. us republicans have repeatedly raised the issue of votes of fraud. european election observers on the us to monitor the vote. do you think they'll find any evidence of fraud? it was very easy to make the allegation of fraud. as we've seen, it's much harder to provide actual empirical evidence of it. i mean,
3:14 pm
we saw last in 2020, the way in which trump insisted that only as a result of fraud was he cheated out of electoral victory. i mean, shockingly enough, he's continued to make the same allocations for the last 4 years and actually has turned willingness of other republican lawmakers to agree to his lie as something of a witness test of their fidelity to republican politics. but actually, if you look historically, and particularly if you look at the last, you know, more recent elections election fraud is a vanishingly tiny problem in american elections. and if we look specifically at 2020 an election, which after all was conducted in the back of pandemic, there's a lot of pressure on the electro system. the system performed extremely well with a lot of integrity in clear fairness. and so, you know,
3:15 pm
while we see russia and other foreign agitators spreading lies, which find amplification in the words of donald trump, the election fraud really is not a problem that has like elections in this country. now the title of a book you rolled in 2020 is will he go? where you rightly predicts is, trump would work to overturn the election results. if you lose this again, we go this time again. i mean, he's got the incumbent so it doesn't necessarily have the same levers of power to, to operate in trying to overturn the electoral defeat. but i'm pretty confident that, um, so probably fall much of the same playbook. a play book that he followed last time around. i would not be surprised at all if he declares victory to
3:16 pm
night or early tomorrow morning. i think it was a to a m. uh last time. and the last election that she preemptively declared victory, and i certainly expected him to launch, assuming again that he loses a to launch all sorts of, of litigation for the purposes of challenging the boat in the states that cost him his election. victory is also possible that he could, whether directly or indirectly inspire his, his loyalist, to engage in certain acts of civil unrest. do you expect any civil unrest tomorrow? you know, it's not necessarily even tomorrow. it could be, you know, we don't know exactly when we will get the full results of the selection. it wasn't until 4 days after the election in 2020, that we actually had it declared winter. the biden is cleared winter. so of course,
3:17 pm
i hope that there isn't any address, but certainly trump has prime, choose a supporters to engage in acts of potential violence. i mean, he has continued to issue the message that only an active shooting can tend to practice victory. and, and he's also sent out the message that this country is lost if he doesn't win. so you put those 2 messages together and that could be interpreted in some of his among his, his supporters as a license to engage in a violent um rejection of the electoral results. well as douglas that also and professor of lloyd, i'm house close to massachusetts. thank you very much for sharing your expertise with us. thank you for having me.

our prime minister pitiless sunchase has announced a relief package with 10600000000 zeros to help the survivors of the flash floods that have killed more than 200 people in the area of valencia. emergency workers are still searching shopping centers, garages, and on the ground comp on a more subject to search rhythm offs with comments may have deposited more buddy 217 people on known to have died in the floods. but that number is expected to rise as many people still on the account. us and the i off the w corresponded jun slip shows. so is just returned from brothers. yeah. why so many people were killed in the front, despite advanced bullying from full cost as well for 1st of all, because it has probably been the worst flooding in europe in the past 5 decades. but also because the crisis management here in spain has been catastrophic. that is

really no other way to describe, but it's the regional government only sent out in regards to the people oft uh many thousands had already been stripped and that cars are outside on the streets. and since then, the crisis management has been disastrous as well. and the specialized soldiers that are trained for these disasters only arrived in the region, at least a big part of these uh, soldiers on the right in the region. 5 days after the floods hit. so a catastrophic crisis management in valencia and the area around and flip charts that report to ethel in ukraine rages on an increasing number of russian does that reach in europe. this illusion with pollutants war of aggression order is terrified of getting killed and making their way from places including conflicts down to the
