5:00 pm
the the migration policy starts november 9th on d w. this is the w news line from berlin. donald trump wins back to white house and is ready to wield power. give it, i said, how impressed it is. and powerful amended. president elect republican party also won back a majority in the us senate, also coming up europe's leaders, including germany's transfer their lineup to congratulate from saying they're ready to work with them. but what about you crank and worries about a trade the
5:01 pm
i'm mike local. welcome. former us president and republican candidate donald trump has won the us presidential election, the associated press called trump victory after using edge past campbell of harris in the key battleground state of wisconsin. putting him past the threshold. 270 look toral boots. even before that trumpet dressed, supporters in florida promising a new golden age for american calls on the country to choose midnight and said he would put america for trouble. also hailed the republican party success in the center where it gained the majority. throughout the night, jubilant trump supporters took through the streets to celebrate. let's listen into part of that victory speak. nothing will stop me from keeping my word to me, but we will make america save strong prospers, power, home and free again. that i may ask you to every citizen, all across the land, to join me in this noble and righteous and ever that's what it is. it's time to put
5:02 pm
the divisions of the past 4 years behind us. it's time to unite. and we're going to try. we're going to try, we have to try and it's going to happen. successful. bring us together. i've seen that. i've seen that i saw that in the 1st or when we became more and more successful people started coming together. success is going to bring us together and we're going to start by. busy putting america 1st, we have to put our country 1st for at least a period of time. we have to fix it because together we can truly make america great again for all americans. so i want to just tell you what a great honor this is. i want to thank you, i will not let you down. america's future will be bigger, better ball the richer, safer and stronger than it has ever been before. god bless you and god bless america.
5:03 pm
we want to give you a look at the electoral college vote and again and the magic number 270 for victory . trump has clinch the wind and is leading harris by account of 277 to 224. and here's how he did it. by out performing harris and every major swing stayed trump winning the battleground, states of pennsylvania, wisconsin, north carolina, and georgia. he's also leading harris in michigan, nevada, and arizona. and here's a look at the balance of power in the us congress. republicans have one control of the senate with 52 seats. the fight for control of the house of representatives continues with republicans hoping to defend their razor within majority. democrats would need to flip 4 seats to win control of the chamber.
5:04 pm
with me now in the studio is the buildings are u. s. electron analysts an easy if, i mean, once again, the polls underestimated trump and he's one to clear victory. how did he pull it? off, well, going into the selection 2 thirds of americans said they thought that the country was seriously on the wrong track. so it seems like the, the easiest take away from this is that trump sold and sold self as the better man to go in there. and to change things for americans, whether that was for economic reasons, for security reasons for things like this. the truth is that combo harris was not able to sell or so as the candidate of change. that's my take away anyway. and what we're seeing on the ground with exit polls looking at how voters voted it what it blue pollster is ex, expert patients out of the water. what was it always to say the least they expect to be a close result and pulse is a lot of them did give trump the victory, but we didn't expect. is latino voters going for trump? uh, the, the a couple of harris got about 53 percent of the latino vote,
5:05 pm
which is the worst result for democrats in my lifetime. she actually lost the latino vote among latino men trump had a i think again there what we saw is that women didn't go for commer harris, how we expected. they actually voted larger numbers for trump than they did for bite and bite and had a 15 percent of 15 point lead in women over at the trump when he ran against him in 2020. and what we saw is comma harris only had a 10 point lead there, and she was expect to do a lot better than that. and so really he, he exceeded expectations and basically every category they want to look at, they'll certainly be more to say about this in the coming days, weeks, and certainly in the history books. but right now, in the early hours, how or democrats processing this defeat, come with harrison or campaign, haven't made the statement yet. this thing, we still need to wait for the electoral college to early to be finished. we still
5:06 pm
have some states where the vote has not been, tallied yet, but she would expect you to give a speech today. but so we don't really know what her campaign is saying. but behind the scenes, there's soul searching going on for the democratic party. a lot of democrats say that the party needs to find a new identity for the past 2 elections. and polls show can actually show this by asking voters why they're voting for the past 2 elections. democrats have been voting against trump, but not for by nor harris, and not for the candidate the democrats of put forward harris. if you remember, it wasn't unpopular candidate when she tried to clinch the democratic nominate nomination. she was selected as by it and running mate, and then became the vice president. but she never actually won a contest popularity contest to run for president. and i think democrats have to contend with the fact that she just wasn't the popular candidate to get the job done. so a lot of people are saying that you need to move to the left. does she need to move to the right to get drums, voters? so that's a conversation that's going on right now. let's talk about trump victory speech for
5:07 pm
a moment. what is the promising for the next 4 years? well, he, 1st of all, his victory speech was and he was basking in the glory of his return to power. a lot of the speeches about him and his movement, how he has a mandate. now for the next 4 years, at least we don't really know what he's planning. but what he said was that you repeated that he's going to make the border secure, is going to impose terrace, especially on china, to bring industry back to the united states. this is of course, wearing allies of united states. tariffs are not a great thing for free trade. um, but what he, what really came out of it for me was the sense that he is the head of a movement in the us. and if you're on the ground there, you can see that there's a lot of energy behind his campaign. people really see it as a movement, and he's capturing the energy. and there was so much energy when campbell harris 1st got into this thing, it just shows you how the campaign it is a long slog, no matter how short it might be, that's a dw. so in essence, many,
5:08 pm
many things is always to the election result of leads, the democrats and campbell harris. searching for answers data suggest donald trump made gains with nearly every democratic group compared with his 2020 defeat as ami, and was just referring to including 3 key ones that have previously been the bedrock of the democratic party, that's black, hispanic and young voters. let's start with the young voters according to the associated press. in 2020, about 6 out of 10 voted, providing that support for democrats went down harris scott about half the youth vote. it's a similar picture when you look at black voters, 9 and 10 black voters cast their ballad for the democrats in 2020, with camelot harris as the candidate. that number went down to 8 in 10. finally, hispanic voters in 2020. the democrats got 6 out of 10 of their phones. this time 5 out of 10 voted for harris. william blue cross is
5:09 pm
a us analyst and deputy editor for parliament magazine. he gave us his take on the numbers. what i make of it is that it's quite reductionist, and for as long as democrats and posters and media organizations are going to keep running with these questions of the black vote or the latino vote, or the young voter and not dig into some more new watts there about so it's your economics class education, a number of things that, that, that transcends these groups, right. what is the black folder of blue black photos are like all voters. they come from a variety of walks of life latino voters. cubans vote differently than kind of recon folk, differently than mexican americans, etc, etc. the list goes on and on. so it's not enough to just say, well, we have the black book with us. what does that mean? um and to that point, we see exactly that. yes, over all black americans are still voting heavily for democrats,
5:10 pm
but less so. and in these elections that are so close, all trump had to do, and we seem trump having a long history with this is just chip away. a couple of percentage points here. and there are women of people from various latino backgrounds and people from various black community backgrounds to get to the results that we saw today. let's digging deeper with this. i mean the math is pretty easy and is a trend here. we're talking a loss of roughly 10 percentage points from almost every traditionally democratic voting. blog keeping in mind that the new ones that you just reference there. how did that happen to i mean, trump has been saying this was much as it was going to happen. and he was right and, and we have seen this trend towards a more nuanced electorate that these traditional estimate groups and only viewing people as they're asking us to do your, their skin color and not bringing in. as i said, education class, these kinds of things is a big liability for the democrats,
5:11 pm
and they are going to need to really rethink what does diversity look like in america? because they've always gone this assumption that democrats can win because the united states is getting more diverse. but exactly, to their point. democrats also want to see that diversity do well so, so i can honestly and as people do better says reckon optically they might have changed their voting habits and vice versa. so democrats really have to rethink what exactly these various demographic group groups are, what they want. because it's not, it's a bit reduction step, not a bit offensive and patronize. you just say just because you are of a certain background or of a certain community. you will automatically sync a certain way. there's a much more, a nuanced, sort of political approach that the parties have to go after that. donald trump clearly was very successful at william, how do you explain that this was such a clear undisputed victory for trump? despite everyone expecting a drawn out neck and neck race where the outcome might not be clear for dates. all
5:12 pm
right, well everyone except the trump people, of course we should probably know. i mean there's a couple things that play here. obviously, pollsters have acknowledged. first of all, polls are more of an art than a science. pulses have acknowledged, it can be extremely difficult to get an accurate reading and accurate weighting of trump voters of low prevents propensity voters. we've heard this term low propensity for for months. now people who don't tend to come out to vote that trump has been very good and getting up to those very hard to pull those people. and also polls have a margin of error and that can span 678 points on either side. so that helps explain that also. let's keep in mind that in 2020 joe biden, although he won, he didn't win by the margins at many, the polls in 2020. what say me. and so couple of harris was gonna have that much of an uphill battle to get to where she needs to go. and she, she didn't get there. you just talked about the low propensity voters, but there was another interesting figure that might help explain trump success. his support, among 1st time voters increased from 32 percent 4 years ago to
5:13 pm
a majority of 54 percent significant. are very significant. and i think democrats and others need to ask themselves, why were people not voting, and now they're voted by what causes a person to want to come out. and so clearly trump has tapped into something, and he's been very effective. we've, we've known that he's very effective in getting people out to vote who might not ordinarily votes from a democratic perspective, almost in a paradoxical democratic perspective. small, do you not big the democrat? that's a good thing to get more people to vote at so. so that is something that i think democrats have to study very, very hard how to reach in the way that, that donald trump and republicans have been a very successful at to get these people off the proverbial cell site into the balance booth and for their interest to be voting for them, while the democrats in question this election cycle, pamela harris, had surely hoped for much more support from white women voters. anyone tracking her
5:14 pm
campaign you? abortion was at the center of it. why wasn't that enough? she did it exactly. she did well with women, of course she didn't do as well as many expected she didn't even do as well as by didn't did. there are many reasons for that. i think it's too soon to really speculate on what all the nuanced reasons work is always more than one reason. and as i was saying earlier, women are a broad swash of the, of the country of voters. there half the population has many different reasons that someone might vote one way or another, more than just being a woman or what, what have you. and it just, it just wasn't enough, right? i said that earlier, as i said, donald trump chipped away at all of these groups at all levels of society at all corners of society. and regardless of what traction that i come with, harris might have made. it just wasn't. i know i'm really curious in your mind, william, if you had to pinpoint one specific issue, which i know might be impossible, but which issue decided the election for trump?
5:15 pm
and that is an impossible question. obviously, exit polls are showing that the economy, despite its macro economic strength, is being felt by many americans as having been as, as not working for them. and the fact is, the change candidate tends to win and the change candidate this time around and the change candidate for the last decade has been donald trump. 2020 was a bit of an outlier because of, of coven bite. and one that largely thanks to cove it for as, as mccaul, but as that might sound and come on as has not been changed. canada americans are saying we want change so many people may not like the change that donald trump is offering. but nonetheless, it is change and that's what people want it for. a variety of reasons. our thanks to william glue croft in brussels as always william, always nice to hear from you. a jim chancellor luff shawls has congratulated trump on his victory. here's some of what he had to say. certainly many things will be
5:16 pm
different on the government. talk net by donald trump. you always made that clear our messages all clear. firstly, let's gemini, will remain a reliable transfer that and pick popped up by talk. we know about the contribution we make to this path to shop and we'll continue to make the will. this also applies to the threats. russia represents, according to the view of alternate to our lies for security in this on your atlantic space was discussed. and secondly, the european union must undergo closely. i'm to act this way as a german chancellor. what to watch that today i had an exchange with president chrome. tomorrow we will meet the of the heads of state and government. so in the future, we will closely align ourselves there and continue with that and the weeks to come and more european leaders have been congratulating donald trump hungry is a right wing, prime minister, evict or bond a close ally road. so because come back and us political history,
5:17 pm
congratulations to donald trump on his enormous when a much needed victory for the world. here's the printer, president manuel nicole, congratulations, president donald trump ready to work together as we were able to do for 4 years with your convictions and with mind, with respect and ambition for more peace and prosperity dw. so us, electron analysts, in essence, is still with me here in the studio. and we just saw messages of congratulations for some of you rips leaders. but despite their warmth, yours politicians are split over. trump is, it is trump, america 1st policy going to make it hard for the you to work with him? well, let's say that there split but hungry is really an outlier here. it's no secret that most european lead is who are in power right now. really did not want from to win the selection. they worked with him for years. so it's not the same surprise.
5:18 pm
the shock and all the 2016 was. but at the same time, that's not what they were hoping to wake up to today, if they weren't up all night watching the results come in. and that's because trump has as america for his policy, and he really doesn't seem to care what europeans think about what your opinion leaders. think about the the, the many years of productive relationship between the european union and the us. be damned, trump wants to do what's good for americans. that's what he says anyway. so what we have in this situation is european union approaching trump with brendan this with an odd stretch hand hoping that this will help win them over to considering their needs for a few seconds. but they're worried about tariffs. of course, trump has threatened to put 20 percent parents on all imports that would obviously include you important. but what we have to remember is that this is not coming into the same world. the 2016 uh his victory did. even the biden lustration started to do america 1st policies, they had a green deal,
5:19 pm
this environmental package where they were promoting us manufacturing over european and that started this little trade were now what we're not going to see probably is a full blown trade war because the you would have to participate in that and that you is totally dependent on european imports. all right, sorry, use dependent on us import, especially liquid and natural gas, which they can't get from russia anymore. so they're probably not going to retaliate and try to work out a deals and you say use leaders. we're not happy to wake up this morning and see don't back up as one. the oval office again, just to be clear. are you saying it's really about trade? that is what it really comes down to. but then there's also the other international factors. what he's done with nato, where he's just basically put into question the whole european us alliance. and it's not a secret also in the you that, that we're dependent on us of protection here and we're dependent on the us reports got it. and so dw, the, an e says many, many things there to we should mention,
5:20 pm
ukraine's the present in full ottomans. zalinski was quick to post his congratulations on ex. i appreciate president trump's commitment to the peace through strength approach in global affairs. this is exactly the principle that can practically bring just peace in ukraine. closer, i am hopeful that we will put it into action together. we look forward to an era of a strong united states of america under present in trumps decisive leadership. we rely on continued strong bipartisan support for ukraine in the united states. so what do ukrainians think of a 2nd? trump presidency. he's what people in keith told us. yeah. the shaw send the don't . i think it isn't good. you know, because i think trump will not support you crane not good or sharper, receive closer to rush over to you. really, when, when you through to share your life things to what will the end and quite quickly
5:21 pm
provide for us. and so it'll be good if the will ends on any conditions and that are for you ever for your if i don't think we have a choice, feel better at the unless you or decided to put it through a promise to stop them. well, but he avoided explaining how he will do that. so if you want to just stop this war and save a few communion, the he would say that with this cuz i mean that's what he's the kind of person who says one thing today and another tomorrow. we don't know how this ends there seems to have a huge mistake with these a psychologically unstable person. we will see everything depends on the team around him. time will tell, there are still a lot of for us as that is a gift. but now earlier dw riga bureau chief, you a shadow, told us how the kremlin has reacted to trump's when was the actions of the kremlin to come. so evict 3 today. a very different from directions to his verse during when he was 1st elected. and it's no longer because uh, the very pest changed and so have russian american relations. and so kremlin
5:22 pm
spokesmen, pest coff has pointed out to the people should not forget to sat the usa is, is also called the unfriendly country for russia. and he said he didn't even know where the president put in would congratulate to donald trump on his victoria. then then when asked if put into a possible silence, so need not to go to lation with divorce and us russian relations misstep. his golf said, those relations will at an all time low any way, but also all the reactions and former president midway 80, for example, among positive us, sat on x as that the trump was off to all the business man who wouldn't spend his money on useless gifts, i've been very fortunate to edit them all drastically. i don't repeat his words directly. he was of course, referring to the u. s. a for ukraine to and we can't get enough of dw, so us electron analysts, i mean e says and he continues to stay with me here in the studio. it's very clear on me
5:23 pm
and the trump made it a clear goal to end the ukraine war as he ported. if you were to get back into the oval office, what does this mean for peruvians war with you right, right into and it in 24 hours, a trunk biggest appeal in the, in, in ukraine is actually that he's unpredictable. so a lot of people still banking on the fact they might not know what he's up to. we might have something up asleep. but if we look at what he said, and we look at the facts on the ground, russia has already been exposed by us. officials as supporting donald trump in the election through a direction interference involving many tens of millions of dollars. so russia has a clear preference here and they got their man. so that being said, uh, ending the war and ukraine in 24 hours would obviously have to have it would mean freezing the conflict on the lines where they are now negotiating some kind of peace treaty with russia, which is exactly what you kind doesn't want. they could do that now if they want it to, but they want to continue fighting to at least the government wants to continue fighting
5:24 pm
to retain, regain its territory that is lost during the russian, where have aggression. so this frightens ukrainians very much. but as i said, the still hold out of hope that rock, that trump, as a self declared strong leader, is going to go in there and get a good deal for both sides. but i'd say most ukrainian, at least the many that i've talked to in t of are not so hopeful that that's kind of how, how, how do you see a 2nd, trump term impacting nato and cooperation on security policy between the us and your well, we've already seen the legacy of trump. he was in office for 4 years. there was a lot of hard feelings between nato and the us, which is nato's biggest partner and biggest funder. but in the end, what's interesting in europe, after he's been out of office, if you're lot of people in brussels, talking about how maybe he was right that the european union needs to find its own way to start supporting itself, investing more in its military, especially with the so called threat from russia on his doorstep. so trump's
5:25 pm
a brash way of dealing with nato in his aggressive attitude toward so called allies . and in the end, i think nato learn some lessons from that. and it's a different data that we're seeing that greeted him in 2016. and i mean, i don't need to explain this to you. a big question that i've been asking every analyst uh that i know that will be continued to be a big question in the short term future is whether or not this trump victory signals a reinvigorate to somebody who is going to be now much more in bold and in the 2nd term, what are your thoughts? well, certainly he probably thinks he can get more out of the war and ukraine that he could have under a bite and administration or harris administration. i don't think that putting things he's going to get everything he wants from from, but the trump has said critical things about sanctions, for example, which has been a burden on russia. the economy has dealt with that. but i think it would be a gift to put in if the us drop those things and, but again,
5:26 pm
the unpredictability of trump is a, a weakness to some and a benefit to others. i think i put in is standing his guard not really sure how trop is going to deal with him because trump does also want to show the americans that he is putting america 1st. and obviously that could involve dealing a blow to russian interest as well. that is a d, w, 's a and e says many, many things. as always. i mean and reminder of our top story this, our donald trump has clinton victory in the us presidential election. speaking to supporters in florida, trump promise works. he called a new golden age for america and said he had won an unprecedented and powerful mandate to govern. pamela harris is expected to address 1st reporters in the coming out and we will end things there up. next. we take a look at why spain is leading the way in sustainable aviation field. stay tuned
