11:05 am
posted online for transparency. and either way, your reporter stephen beardsley joins me now. stephen, what can you tell us about this department of government efficiency as it's called nicole, i think we have more questions than answers on this. and i think everyone's trying to understand exactly how this will work. the 1st thing that comes to mind is when you say department, and that is usually something that is inactive by congress funded by congress. a department head has to be nominated. so there's a whole lot that would have to happen to create a department. but my guess here is that the department is there just to provide a d for those. of course, that's a riff on those coin. that's the crypto form that a lot of the line must, has been promoting for quite a while. so it's just part of the joke. whether this takes the form of a task force, whether it takes the form of some sort of office within the white house. that's going to be the question, and then, you know, in of itself, i think reducing the federal bureaucracy. it has been something that has found bipartisan agreement. over the years. we've seen democratic efforts to do the same
11:06 am
. and we know that in recent years, the most conservative conservatives, especially traditional conservatives, is and a very important point. and that's carried over to these conservative populace. and especially to these kind of tech billionaires, they're the ones like you are most who really take up this idea of the federal bureaucracy taking up too much air in the economy. but it does raise a lot of questions. how's you on most going to juggle what he's doing right now with this? what accountability will he have? and of course there's this ethics question as well, you know, what is his company's base x. among other companies, it has contracts with the federal government. so is he going to call those who might actually take a close look at some of the contracts that he has? is he going to call those who might have a say over the environmental impact of some of his launches? these are very earnest questions and the question is, is this going to be lost and kind of the joking us of this are americans, are americans going to look at this? are they going to see it seriously? is it going to be taken seriously? right now? it seems to be a lot of fun, but it prompts a lot of questions. yeah. some people are, as you say, worried about a conflict of interest here. what would be the legal safeguards in place to avoid
11:07 am
an abuse of power on, on my side, i think it depends on how this, this office, department, whatever is set up. there are different ethics units, sort of embedded across the us government, whether it comes to the legislature, whether whether it comes to holding the executive to accounts of the office of governmental ethics. there are certain problems with some of these, including the old g e, the office of governmental ethics. it doesn't have a head right now. so that means it will likely be appointed by trump himself. that's the clock. clearly a problem in the making or could be a problem in the making. the system in the us is generally set up the power split between 3 different bodies, the executive, the legislature, and the supreme court. and you can say it 1st with all those appear to be on the side of conservatives. so i would say generally, the supreme court is going to rule in, within the mainstream of jurisprudence. and also the divisions and the legislature is so close that it doesn't guarantee it, there's just going to be a clean sweep. so you have to hope that there will be an accountability that exists
11:08 am
in the system itself. but it does again raise questions, who's really going to have oversight over must, is it going to fall to voters in 2 years and what damage could happen between now and them if that's if that's the case. yeah. and then i want to get some more appointments. in the 2nd, but now that you mention, you know, the, the balance of power and the checks and balances in the us. we still don't know who's going to control the house of representatives. what's the most likely outcome at this point? what's it looking like we, we, we do have an idea of the republicans, are there in position to actually have control. the question is by what the margin is going to be and it still looks like it could be close. at the end, it's going to be close, whether it's by one to members of congress, whatever it is, is going to be close. and that gives more power to individual congress, members themselves to demand certain concessions when bills come through. it means that in general, that the republicans will have control of the house will be able to sort guide legislation to be able to take off legislation control. what's taken up by the congress, but that it also means that these sort of more radical elements,
11:09 am
especially on the far right, we see the freedom caucus much more the sort of populist congressman within the republican party. they've been a bit of a headache for the more traditional members. they might have more of a say because this is going to be so close. it also means that more moderates who may want to caucus with a democratic over to their side, essentially on certain votes. they may be able to do that with more ease, be able to extract more concessions. but let's remember that in general with this white house, a lot of what's been promised, what he's looking at. it's really not going to be legislative, maybe some of the tax cards, extending tax stuff. that's gonna help the legislative, some border funding mechanisms. but lot of what he's talking about includes executive orders. it includes things like pardons for the january, 6, people who are accused there who were convicted, i should say. so this is a presidency to talk more about executive power. then he does working through the legislature, but still there's a lot that can be done. yeah. and another appointment that we know about at this point is the secretary of defense. what do you make of the tag stuff? yup. pete heads up is probably one of the more shocking appointments if it takes
11:10 am
place. so nominate sions i should say. and yet it's still within the realm of possibilities for trump is not a surprise. and one way he's, he's a fox mouthpiece fox news now he's, he's a loyalist in every sense of the word. he supports trump through thick and then he said that, you know, trump plays a role put there by god essentially. and so he is a color commentator, he was a former, is a veteran of the army. and so that has his connection to the military in that sense . but that doesn't really say much more. he doesn't have any experience in the military bureaucracy in the pentagon, and in fact, he's really gone against them recently through some high profile charges against service members, accused and convicted in some cases of wrong doing in recent wars in iraq and afghanistan. so he's very much on the popular side supporting where the little man soldier, targeted by the big bureaucracy. it's not always that simple. some of these men were very much did wrong or very accused as reason to believe that they did things that were agreed just in fact. but because that's the way the environment is among conservative populace. you know, he's going to feel that way. he's going to po with trump,
11:11 am
and he speaks very much to that side, but huge questions about can he manage a bureaucracy as big as the d o d, the budget is massive. it's the biggest department with in the united states government and it has a lot of meaning for preparing the u. s. military for readiness. also helping countries in need of support such as ukraine, things like that. so a lot of the worst case fear would be that this is going to, it's going to enact that kind of purging that trump has a so often talked about about the deep state that it as well with in the military bureaucracy. we're in the past, we've seen more general speak up against them. we've seen civilians in higher positions within the d o. d speak up against in the us department of defense. and there's going to be concerns now that those will be part of the military generals who speak up against will be purge, as well as higher ranking. speaking openly about this, he's spoken openly about it. he very much believes this idea of deep states, both trump and hex, that do so, excuse me. again, the question will be, will he be, how would he go through the nomination process, how we go through the appointment process? congress ultimately has to say, here's well, yeah,
11:12 am
think there's like thank you so much. i of the, an update now and some other stories making headlines around the world today. el salvador is president night bouquet. there has admitted that a 1000 innocent people were arrested as part of his government crackdown on the street gangs book. and it says they have already been released more than 80000 people were arrested under a state of emergency human rights groups say around a 3rd of them are in a sense australia and indonesia and begun joint military drills after signing an agreement to boost defense cooperation the 4 day exercises and java involving around 2000 troops covering land, air, and sea operations. defense has become a priority of indonesia, as new president, for both of us to be unto whose sonton deep military cooperation with many states in the region. german transel f shots and the opposition have agreed on a date when the country will go to the polls. south elections are expected to take place on the 23rd of february. it will be

a rail winter election in germany instead of the usual september pro life sheltered social democrats and the opposition. c. d u. c. s. you have both accepted an early date somewhere between what the 2 sides were hoping for to have him. once we have agreed to propose to the german president artist that the election of the 21st german bonus tag should take place on the 23rd of february 2025, 50 von some items fontes dodge, and when the stock chancellor shelves announced last week, he would call a confidence vote and take us the collections that was up to his government collapsed when he dismissed finance minister, christie, and link the head of the free democrats. one of the 3 parties in his coalition showed sides to be nominated as these parties. candidate for chancellor had returned to lead and the government is still with us. i believe this will help us

to finally come to a clear focus, namely who is the better chance left the gym and they hadn't had you know that i am firmly convinced the show to set up this country well under the most difficult conditions over the last 3 years, but didn't woman these lands, good guitar, not a continuation of shelters. chancellor looks unlikely that according to the pulse freezers manse could be on his way to the top job, he's sent a right group is set to come out of an election as the largest party. but it would need coalition passes and the make up of any future government is i'm clear. meanwhile, concerns have been raised. the rushing to the pose could cause problems for the smooth running of an election. until just a week ago, the parties were still planning for regular elections 10 months from now. now they will have to scramble to pick candidates, and the authorities will have to meet legal deadlines much sooner with what to do
11:15 am
over the christmas and new year holiday season. but jim and his chief electoral officer says she thinks february, the 23rd is doable. that 3rd time by the that's completely understandable. and unfortunately some media outlets including public broadcasters, have contributed to that fear. i'm going to buy the taco, this is obviously streaming, then goes by fixed by look at the demonstrations, for example. let's get the solution and there are peaceful demonstrations. i'm not saying there are hundreds of them, but there are some people they hardly get any attention. the ones that do get attention are the ones that are conspicuous and the ones where there are problems the all finished will supposedly income. and of course that's how media
11:16 am
works. the bad news sells better offers and i'm gonna see this question. the question that's was that bad news means that we now have racist attacks to fish and people feel completely secure and free to insult those sites to the lighting nation, not just on social media, but also in public in person to luna. that's problematic. and the media is contributing to that in, by the, i think for the really a good way to bring people together. and it's always

a way to speak to someone to heart. i think 3 weeks more or less after the worst started i had a really bad and the inflammation in my stomach and then i i couldn't eat for a few days anything. and then a yeah. like i didn't was in a, even in a mood for cooking. that was kind of the 1st time that i actually invited friends to be together and do something. and then i, i cooked a lot of stuff and it felt like kind of safe space. i would say um where i can have hear people and coke and everything,
