11:01 am
olaf shoals is due in the city of mazda book, in the wake of an attack, at a christmas market in the city on friday evening. for people have now been confirmed dead and dozens of others injured. many of them critically. one of those killed was a young child. authorities have arrested the suspect, who drove a car through crowns for several 100 meters. he's a 50 year old doctor from saudi arabia who moved to germany in 2006. he expressed a strong anti islam views online and also praised the far right a of the political party. the police force, the driver of a badly damaged bmw ounce of his cot and on to the ground. the 4 officers rushed to detain him. the raced came moments after the costs smashed through a crowd of people at a christmas market in the eastern gym and the city of month to book the vehicle
11:02 am
drive at least $400.00 mazes according to police, killing and injuring people in its path. a young child is among the deed holding 100 image and see responders rushed to the same layout of honor. we were in the church for the concepts and we sold the police lights and had the sirens on. and of course, it went on so long that you have to assume that something terrible had happened. it prospect there's just to see if this jim and all stars east have identified the drive as a 50 year old doctor who move to gemini from saudi arabia in 2006. they described him as a loan and attack it, and did not believe there was any through the threats. dollars is on the football. it is a terrible tragedy video. it is a catastrophe for the city of mazda board and for germany. and generally for the fun, is this a all caught, it's in the context of what a christmas mark is supposed to bring. it really is one of the worst things i can
11:03 am
imagine was, you know, 4th thing con, we have caught the perpetrator, us are using, we're currently in the process of collecting all further data and also carrying out the interrogation. friday's attack time, 8 years after and his law make extremist drive the truck into a building, christmas market, killing 13 people. christmas markets are a huge part of german culture. but several events of now being cooled off for the weekend as a safety precaution. and out of respect for the victims and mount the book was bringing the w's jews, jewels, gisler, who has been covering the story for us in locked burke. so jewels we, we just mentioned, the german chancellor will be visiting the city of mazda burg, within the hour we understand what else is happening, where you are today a hi, mariana. so stayed premier i know has a lot of got selectable yesterday. so last night, as we seem to know,
11:04 am
we pulled him speaking and he is already at the scene. chancellor shoals is expected to arrive shortly, and in the next hour we expect him to give a press statement on the situation. he already voiced his condolences for the victims and it was the interior minister, nancy phase, that is on her way to marketable so often a press statement by shoulds. he is expected to walk through the christmas market, accompanied by police and the organizer of the christmas market. to get a better overview of the situation and how it happened. and they are apart from that there several memorial services taking place today in the city where people can go and mourn the victims. and that is also a decision by the city that several cultural institutions will be closed for the upcoming days. in the sign of morning. and now jewels i know that you arrived in
11:05 am
magda berg last night, shortly after the attack. and i know you've been speaking to many of the locals there. what have people been telling you? people absolutely shocked the people i could talk to. they had actually difficulties finding what that's for what happened. and it's been a mix between sadness and anger. so we also had many people shouting on the streets and shouting out and about what happened. and it is actually a city, an absolute morning and in despair. and i think many people as from what i got up to con, wrap the head around on, on the attack. and what happened last night, us. and just this morning, the day after, what is the atmosphere like in the city?
11:06 am
the atmosphere at the moment is quite 10, so it is, we are in the city center and it eats the can see behind me. this is usually bustling with life at the weekend and especially the weekend before christmas. so usually you do have way more people on the street during the last christmas shopping. there are some people, but it is way quite a. so you do, you have people walking slowly, you definitely can see a attention here. and aside, there are several people who have been so shouting a, please at the press, to note that and uh, and you can clearly feel it is a very tense duration. and apart from that, they are heightened security measures in place because of the salts visit to, to, to city. so it is, i think, a very weird feeling you get, this is very tend, well understandable,
11:07 am
that nerves are afraid. um mac to work is not a very big town chose. maybe you can just tell our international viewers a little bit about the city where this attack to place. and so it matched about is the state capital all 6 on the i'm hug and we're talking about a small city. so i think it's more like a big time, but it has 240000 people living here. and usually it's like the city center is where all the social life is taking place. so you do have this as a place where people do their shopping. this is where people need the friends and family members for dinner. they go road and many shops and also offices in the city center. so this is usually the, the, the place to go in the city. so this attack definitely hits the city, hit the heart of the city if you want to call it that. and also just thinking of
11:08 am
that the attack took place, the loved friday before christmas. so people had so many people had their last day of working for the year. so they wanted to celebrate. they went on this christmas small kids, the actually have a joyful time and are looking forward to the end of the year. and this is all not buying cuz people uh, absolutely moving it. absolutely really devastating, devastating uh, incidents inactive work. that was the double use jewels gisler reporting for us jewels. thank you so much. we appreciate it. i to look for more in this developing story, i'm joined in the studio by d. w of security and political correspondent, thomas sparrow. so thomas, we're just hearing initial information about the suspect, who was arrested at the scene of the attack. what do we know so far when these kinds of incidents happen, mariana,
11:09 am
there are different levels in which things develop. so one thing is the shock that you have in the city that we just heard from jewels. one thing is finding more information about the victims, about the relatives, about how the city is going to recover. and that's one of the reasons why i've chose is also visiting my to bulk of visiting the sites. also to show his sort of directing person. another element is trying to find more information about the main suspect and more information specifically to identify possible motivations. so far, the information that has been revealed about the suspect is that this is a 50 year old man from saudi arabia who's been in germany for quite some time. at 1st, there was a lot of speculation about possible is limits, motivations. but authorities are stressed that this doesn't seem to be the case that it's actually the opposite. that according to his social media profile and many drum and media out this have been looking at that social media profile. he actually had anti islam views. but again, this doesn't necessarily mean that that was the motivation behind the attack.
11:10 am
authorities need to look very closely at his social media posts. they also need to look very closely at what he hadn't his apartment apparently, such as being conducted in the apartment. and once those pieces are put together, authorities will be able to find out more about the suspect and more about the motivations. well, one of the things that authorities said last night was that they believe this was a loan attacker. thomas, um, how could authorities come to this sort of conclusion? so early in this investigation because it was a preliminary conclusion authorities a very cautious when it comes to presenting information in such a difficult situation and such a difficult developing attack incident. they do so on the one hand because they want to protect people who are still maybe in or around the christmas market. they want to do so also to avoid any further speculation. and based on the information
11:11 am
that they have, they normally step by step very slowly release information. so it was only a preliminary conclusion that they reached that they believe that the mind was acting on his own. there was lots of speculation online about a possible 2nd vehicle about other kinds of aspects. so that's why they came out and said from the information that they had so far, they believe this was alone taught god. this doesn't mean that this will remain like that because as the investigations continue, they can probably identify maybe people who have been in contact with him in some cases, even identified possible networks. but this is something that will only be revealed if a toll when they have more information. so yes, that has been criticism from security expert to upset that maybe was too quick. just say that this mind had acted alone. the suspects had acted alone, but that's normally the way a thought is works and they 1st get preliminary details on with that preliminary details, they want to inform the public according to,
11:12 am
well speaking of social media, there is now a flurry of discussion in speculation across different social media channels, all sorts of things being talked about. one of the things is apparently that this man was known to authorities, or there were warnings about him being a potential threat to a stories. again, none of this has been confirmed, but generally speaking, thomas, when authorities do get warnings from the general public, how do they decide whether to follow up on these types of things? well, one thing is if they get warnings from the general public or another thing is if they get warnings from that, say international partners from other countries. and that's 2nd case. if they do get information from other partners, then probably the public wouldn't know about it until authorities have actually acted on the reports that we're seeing actually indicate that may be saudi arabia. also, how's your day been? officials had warned german officials about the suspect being an extremist,
11:13 am
but that is only sources that reveal it to one specific agency. so this is not something that has been independently verified or confirmed. but generally speaking, german authorities, in particular, german intelligence authorities do work hand in hand with partners around the world specifically to deal with these kinds of threats. so it will, it will be interesting to see indeed in the next few hours, maybe in the next few days, to what extent that intelligence information was said if i told and sadly this is not the 1st time that a christmas market in germany was targeted in an attack we had of course, 8 years ago, the attack in berlin at the christmas market where many people were killed. and since then it seems that security measures have been beefed up quite significantly . thomas. so how could this suspect have managed to bypass the security measures at the max of our christmas market security measures?
11:14 am
mariana have absolutely been increased in recent years, has been a lot of discussion. basically, every question was a discussion about christmas markets, possibly or even abstractly, as they quoted here being the possible target for these kinds of attacks. social security measures have been increased in particular. there are bullets at the influenza concrete blocks also with the sidewalks, test, police presence. actually, i saw that myself when i went to 2 or 3 different christmas markets in the last few weeks and at least one, the ones that i visited would have been very difficult for the cost to sort of bypass those security measures and go into the crowd so it will be a big question in the next few days at our thought is we'll have to answer how this gap actually occurred. how it was possible for this 9 in this vehicle to actually drive into the crowd. this is something 1st and foremost for not to book authorities to answer for the organizes of the christmas market. but more generally will be raising questions as well as to overall security measures in german public spaces, in particular, which i'm here about the christmas markets. that as you know, that basically
11:15 am
a cultural institution here in germany not only visited by germans before christmas, but also by taurus from around the world. so we just particularly sensitive that you'll have this kind of attack at the christmas market, only a few days before christmas. and now we've heard that there will be additional security at christmas markets in the wake of this particular attack. but what does that mean? specifically? i mean, if you say that there's already a lot of security at these markets, what more can be done without comple? it's a restriction, them more police presence that something that we're already seeing. for example, here in berlin also in holler. they've already announced that they're going to increase police presence, for example, access roads. they're also going to look at acts as roads and how to protect those better. so there are concrete immediate measures that can be taken. one thing is an immediate measure. another thing is a more long to measure so that other discussion will involve political decisions because that is particularly important. yeah. all right.
