the for the rest of the world, us say of the also rise starts january 18th, on the dw, the business date of the news alive from the land. passenger jet crashes and south korea killing nearly everyone on board. the plane lands on its belly on the runway and crashes into a wall and catches fire only to survive as have been rescued. showdown in georgia, as the people and leading politicians protests be an alteration of the new fall arrived president. the i'm told me a lot of people. thanks for being with us. we begin with breaking news out of south
8:01 am
korea where a plane has crashed on landing, killing at least a 120 people. the judge, you ask lights from bangkok, skidded off the runway of one international airport, crashed into a barrier and burst into flames that were a 181. people on board lead to have been rescued from the tail section of the boy in 737800 ad craft officials say there's little chance of finding all the survivors which would make it one of south korea's west aviation disasters. let's speak now to jen list jen moon. she's at the side of the crash in one. jen. thank you for being with us. um, what are you seeing right now? it's right on. i'm here at lou on international airport in south carolina providence, which is about 288 kilometers south of the south creek capital sold hours after the
8:02 am
crash. right now, i'm seeing more to re vehicles winding up to take bodies away. and authorities are telling me the temporary morgue has been established. the crash site i can tell you smells a lot of aviation fuel. i'm seeing a lot of workers into protective suits and mask who are coming the area while soldiers are searching here bushes for a possible box. the cover did bodies, and 124 people have recovered, had been recovered bodies and recovered from the site with 55 people still missing . and then this comes at pivotal time in south korea. what's the reaction in the country to this tragedy or right um, so a lot of shock on as the, as the crash happened to place early and sunday morning. so roughly about
8:03 am
8 hours ago this sunday morning. and this is the plane crash, which is the one of the deadliest plane crashes in south korean aviation history so far, couldn't come that a worst time. as this nation goes through a political chaos with a private impeached about a few weeks ago, followed by the peace, rid of the, the acting president, been acting private president for the prime minister. and now in power. is it another acting president who is a 3rd in line, the vice prime minister of this country? he has declared at the zone a disaster special disaster zone. he was here um, to look at the site and to uh, to support the brewery families. i'm also see lots of, um, that family members rushing to this site to identify bodies or in hopes of finding out their loved ones who were on board to have survived. but stories you're
8:04 am
telling me that hopes are feeding and it's very slim right now of any kind of recovery software and in this gen moons, thank you for giving us that update. thanks. richard levy is an a vision experts. i asked him what could have caused the crash a good morning tom h, i see 2 things. one, the landing gear is retracted and it appears as natural as you see that the flap shar retracted. also, the reason i bring that up is because the airplane is traveling very fast on the runaway. again, the landing gear comes off of $100.00 truck system on the west side. and there's news reports that the left engine had been on fire or had some names coming out of it. the landing gear is extended from power from the left engine. however, there's
8:05 am
a backup system in the cut in the flight deck that you have cables handles you pool and you can extend the 90 gear. so that's a mystery to me of why even with an engine malfunction. why the crew do that manually extend the landing gear, the other. how drake system extends the flaps. the flaps come out of the wings. what's the advantage of the flaps? it helps you name and it's so speed. as you can see in the video, they're going at a very fast speed on your runway without the flats extended without the landing gear extended. now i could see the reverse thrust is working. that's a different system also. and they enter in the crash into a concrete barrier at the end of the runway. right, so just wondering what i mean that we've had different reports, but the,
8:06 am
the ceo of this airline ginger line is suggesting there was no plane malfunction. can we attain that at this stage that there wasn't a malfunction with getting the the landing gear out? i said, no, of course it is too early to recover what's called the black boxes. that's the type of voice recorder. they'll get the conversations of the 2 pilots and the uh, site data recorder, which records all the movements of the controls and switches in the top 10. so they'll put this together, but i don't see a malfunction. of course it is not normal to quickly and the airplane was after 9 and your extend it even if there had been a malfunction with the engine. i'm not saying we've been very easy. but in training, and i'm an instructor on this aircraft with a major airline in the united states. we do give engine malfunctions and the crew
8:07 am
would it possible execute a go around and then extend the 90 gear r circle around and then extend the name of your manually. i happen to respectfully disagree. there is a major malfunction right here that have been suggestions of a possible bud strike. can that affect the landing gear to that? i read that also tommy and i find that not impossible but nearly impossible bird strikes to happen at low altitude during takeoff in the landing and met. and the birds were hidden in june or hit and or hit the wings. so it could be the source of the nation fire engine malfunction, but the airplane can safely be slow and after a bird strikes, affecting if it, the bird strikes would affect the naming gear. i don't see that is a possibility,
8:08 am
nothing is impossible. again, it's too early to say that, and if a bird strikes birds did strength direct in june and know that the engine fails. if that's the case, you can still main. we extend the name of gear from the plaintext. this is 873-7800, extremely reliable airplane with a very, very good safety record. losing multiple things here because you mentioning the, the aspect of the flaps, but also the landing gear. i'm just wondering, was there any other way this could have been handled? probably i, i don't know if i mean this is just my ignorance of, of the evaluation. but the points at which the plane hit the wrong way to give enough time for a skid or, or, or, i don't know what that would, that would have been another option for the, for the pilots. it to a touch down in skits. what if you have no flex the fast without extent,
8:09 am
you're going to have a very fast read the speed. they have a very fast moving speed. so you push in airport time permitting was a very long runway. as you can see from the video there. tommy, the weather is not a factor. the weather is beautiful on this day in the green, south korea. so this stuff. and so your research, the, the safety investigation will find exactly what happened. all right, well we'll keep an eye on that. um, as, as time goes on to, to get one of the story, but evasion specialist richard live in dallas. thank you very much for your time and your insights. thank you. tommy a success. now at some of the stories making headlines. russian president vladimir pushing his apologize for what he called a tragic incident in russian as base leading to the downing of and as the by johnny passenger plane, which and told as
8:10 am
a by john's leader that russian ad defenses. what active before the plane crashed in. because like stand killing $38.00 people would have stopped short of admitting responsibility wells, which is mine a lot must cuz again, expressed support for germany's fall. right. a f d party saying is the only party tape a bunch of saving the country. most opinion piece appeared in a jump, a newspaper belt as on tag. the article sparked a backlash, prompting the newspapers, opinion editor to resign. people in georgia bracing for a fresh show down today as the country passed this way. and a controversial new president demonstrates as have been taken to the streets to protest against the inauguration of far right position. because have, unless you really outgoing precedence elements that we should meet says his election is legitimate issues and is refusing to step down. haverlack's really is supported by the really georgia dream policy,
8:11 am
which opponents accuse of being pro russian at and t e u. s. got more now and this from dw, i call. i'm yeah. can you tell us about this man? because kevin, i should really, as well when you go out on the streets on to the, let's see, i'm ask people about him. the 1st thing that they will tell you is he is a former stuck and i am now why does that matter? because it's something that makes quite a few people here angry because they feel that businesses only qualifications open . and so we'll say, listen, he doesn't even have a college diploma. in fact, when he got elected on the same day, people would gather in front of the parliament to demonstrate, bring their own color. so tough that case is it to show them up as to say, look, we are even more qualified than the actual president. however, he does have some political experience coming. us really has been member of parliament since 2016 here in georgia, is
8:12 am
a member of the georgia dream runing policies. but he is also known for being a member of the hall, right. so a political movement which is known for very open n t western kremlin friends, the rest of the week and just a few days ago have a nice many sides in the public statement that he believes underwriting cuz his ice and toner, i zation and george, i actually being huge from abroad without of course, specifying what do you mean? do you just tell us more about this? what makes them so controversial in the country? it's not only that he, as a person is controversial. it's also about controversial is also how he got into the office. for the 1st time, the judgement president was not directly elected by the judge and people both by is so called alex hall or college. now, half of the members of the electronic college,
8:13 am
all from the george and tell them and however enjoyed the question is still to me, it's that call them and it's even legitimate. it will select the back in october, but that has been reports about mess of product during the selection. so the outgoing president inside them is will be severely fast, lifting the parliament. it's not legitimate. so the other part of the college cannot be legitimate. so the president of course, cannot be legitimate business has, she sees it as she says, and that's because of this. she will not leave office, she will be the only legitimate president, and she says she will stay in the office. so we might actually be running into a closed loan, constitutional crisis hand are right in the still protests plan. um what, what do you expect to, to happen um, as this country now debates its way forward and especially this whole e u issue. but protests pro you are paying demonstrations house on fact, so it's been going on for 31 days in
8:14 am
a row and met some people coming out on the streets every night at freezing temperatures, singing, dancing. the protest has been cried. quite creative in those past days. and i think what happens in the next days, a lot of it will depend on what's happening in the presidential palace. the government has repeatedly threatened that they would imprison the outgoing president if she refuses to leave the office. and i think if that happens, really, we see pictures of her being hand coughed and get out of the like being dragged out of the presidential palace. this was what for, for sure, a few of demonstrations, right. okay, to w reporter and your call in to please see thank you. and as a reminder of our top story, south glen, i'm sorry, it is a, is a desktop from a plane crash at an airport has risen to a $120.00 j. u. and flights with a $181.00 on board crash at one international airport. only 2 people have been
8:15 am
rescued alive. thanks for watching up next time at the official intelligence could replace referees in football. at the end of the tech show shift as long as the dw, don't com. i've told me a lot of people is watching the exchange innovation, green, the green revolution global. so listen to a whole lot of crime. it's probably up to speed is secure, subscribed to this channel. every friday. subscribe to plan. it's a me my name is the calls back. said wow, thank you so much for joining in. welcome to don't hold bad. a lot of people.
