other and told him thanks for joining us. he was president elect donald trump has refused to rule of military force to gain control of both the panama canal in greenland. since winning the election from has repeatedly expressed his desire to take over the strategically important waterway and the island. during his 1st terminal office, trump expressed an interest in buying greenland, which is in the town of his territory of denmark, a long time us ally and natal member. but the governments of greenland and denmark have repeatedly rebuffed his offers. from has once again set his eyes on greenland posting on his side to the social on monday. he said, greenland is an incredible place and the people will benefit to tremendously if and when it becomes part of our nation. we will protect it and cherish it from a very vicious outside world. make green and great again, positions. and on tuesday, the future presidents doubled down on his claims or even refusing to roll out

minute to remote military where we need to learn when for national security purposes. i've been told that for a long time, long before i even ran, i mean people have been talking about it for a long time. you have approximately 45000 people there. people really don't even know if denmark has any legal rights to it. but if they do, they should give it up because we need it for national security. that's for the free world. i'm talking about protecting the very well from may beach we maxwell, his son, done a junior, was on a brief visit to greenland officially as a tourist and not holding talks with officials. and the official it's in denmark has made it very clear several times that greenland is not for sale. confederate, it has in fact chosen a new danesh coat of arms, was a prominent pulled up at depicting greenland. many see it as a statement of solidarity greenland as a self governing territory,

but belongs to the kingdom of denmark. and on each step, some is definitely a correlation between the new coat of arms and the politics in denmark, about stronger recognition of greenland and the federal islands and can indicate it's credible the royals do admin. the king frederick has a close connection to greenland on a much love for incident. i'm store, store cabinets, from pedal already expressed, his desires to own reading, and during his 1st presidency, the island nation has a strategic location in the attic for trade and defense. and the bounty of natural resources. victoria herman is a senior fellow at the arctic institute, a non profit dedicated to artic security research. she joins me now. so i guess the question is, how seriously should denmark take donald trump's remarks about buying or c. c 's in greenwood that we should take donald trump seriously at his remarks because he has been interested in greenland not just for the past few

days, but for the past few years. greenland has been an area of interest to the united states for over a 100 years, not to purchase or to and the to but to partner with greenland. and the kingdom of denmark are a strategic ally of the united states militarily, economically and culturally in this conversation. we forget that greenland is a homeland to 56000 people and they should just as much be part of the conversation as any politician here in dc. so how exactly do you justify or explain from interest in greenland is because of natural resources. greenland is rich in natural resources in cultural heritage and in leadership. the people of greenland have created

a diverse and robust economy and they are moving towards independence. the incoming presidents may see this as an opportunity for particular economic endeavors. like where are some minerals, but what is lost here are, is a strong strategic partner, not just forever minerals, but for fisheries. and to build up an arctic economy that can withstand the rapid changes that we're seeing because of climate change. now denmark says greenland isn't for sale, so it's not the end of the matter. it is never the end of the matter with the incoming president. but greenland is not for sale. and it is not only for the kingdom of denmark to state this but from the prime minister of greenland and the government of greenland. to say, greenland has been very strong in its emission and to become independent from the

kingdom of denmark, in 2008 over 75 percent of green lender is voted in a referendum for independence. so it's not just the kingdom of denmark that we should be listening to, but more importantly the government of greenland. now we have seen the past that donald trump is willing to use sanctions and other measures to put economic pressure on both partners and of what he perceives as enemies of the us. so are there any points of leverage that he could have over denmark or greenland? the united states is one of the world's largest economy, is it is the world's largest, the military. there are lots of levers that the united states can use, but should it absolutely not. greenland by a function of being with in the kingdom of denmark is a party to nato. they are our allies to use armed force to use sanction would not just be going against another nation state. it would be going against

a strong ally that is desperately needed as we see, increase tensions across europe. all right, that was a terrier herman with the are to institution. thank you very much for your analysis . thank you. the 10s of thousands of people have in order to evacuate their homes. as a wildfire spreads rapidly in the hillsides of los angeles, the flames have been found by a fierce wind storm that hit the southern california on tuesday and forecast or save the conditions could last for days. fire has consumed more than 5 square kilometers at the pacific palisades area in western l. a. and firefighters are struggling to keep it from spreading. authorities say many buildings have already been destroyed. jason kappa. don't you is a journalist with nbc, an i heart radio in los angeles. welcome to the program. so jason, give us an update on the situation right now. right now the buyer is that about

$1200.00 acres burned a little bit more than that. but the winds in the area are really the story wind gusts of up to 40 to 60 miles an hour this afternoon. later tonight, wind gusts are expected to be about a 100 miles an hour. and the issue here that firefighters are facing are what's called the ember cast. so an amber from a palm tree or something to that effect in the pacific palisades may get caught by the winds and then go up to about 3 miles away and started another fire. and then an ember from that fire start to make a fire. and it, what it does is that spreads the firefighters really, really then, right now, there's about a, a couple of 100 of firefighting personnel, from firefighting crews around southern california who are there to hell. but we've learned it in just a past couple of minutes that some of the embers are actually catching mice guard towers on fire. oh, so there's nothing else on the beach except the sand and

a life guard tower. and that amber found that life guard tower somehow, so my and now it's been burned to the ground. so it's very, very difficult for firefighters to. ready be quicker than the wind. and of course that's also put in many people at risk, and our current numbers indicate that $30000.00 residents under evacuation order is do we know how they're being helped to right now. they're being told to do exactly what they're being told to do. uh, earlier today, we saw people trying to get out of the pacific palisades, and unfortunately, the roads there are very narrow. they're not, they weren't built with a mass evacuation in mind. and people were at some points, ditching their cars, and running down the road to safety, with suitcases of their lives in there. and that's all they had. and then something i have never seen having covered buyers for the past 2 decades. here in l. a. is

fire crews and bringing bulldozers to bulldoze all of the a band and cars off of the roadway in order to get more people the safety. so fire crews have opened up evacuation centers, which is a normal practice here in uh, uh, southern california. and people are just being asked to avoid the area if you don't need to go there. if you don't live there, if you're not picking up somebody like an elderly parent or a disabled siblings, something to that effect, stay out of the area, stay away. and they're just trying to get them as much food and water as possible. now we have to worry about air quality in the area as well. now, as you're indicating the last answer, california is no stranger to fires. but how unusual unusual is the challenge of fire sizes are facing right now. so these wind gusts have up to a 100 miles an hour later this evening are going to be hard. but we haven't seen wind gusts like that in probably about a decade. and we haven't had any significant rain problem. so up in northern

california, they're getting drenched. but in southern california, we're not getting any rain down here and there is none predicted in the, in the near forecast. so this is creating a very dangerous fuel for these fires. it's very dry and there is no holes. there's no help then mother nature and site. so what fire trees have been doing is they've been pulling and other resources from other parts of the country. they've set up stripe teams just in case to see, okay, it may get hot over here in may, you know, be combustible more over a year. so they've had straight teams in place and they ship this thing this morning with everything they had. it's just again, it's not fast enough because we're just saying the weather forecast doesn't seem to be helping the firefighters. and so is there any indication when they will be able to get these blazes under control?
2:12 am
so the high waves are supposed to stick around the rest the rest of the week, maybe until thursday night, possibly friday morning, here in southern california. so this fire is probably going to be fueled over the next few days when they actually get some containment. i'm guessing maybe the weekend when a fire crews are able to get some surrounding areas calm down and maybe get a handle on this thing. but it looks like fire crews are going to be on this thing for a while, especially if we're seeing houses go down and more people being evacuated. malibu just burned a couple of weeks ago and that's right next door so that it may hit that burn scar and not have any more fuel. and that might help as well. all right, that withdrawal is jason couple don't here in los angeles. thank you very much. for your reporting. thank you. and here's look at some more stories making headlines around the world. a powerful earthquake has killed at least 126 people into,
