the impact was the biggest change doesn't happen the make up your own mind. me the . this is dw years live from berlin tonight, the los angeles wild fires, male threatening some of hollywood best known landmarks. multiple blazes of triggered new evacuation orders. as the flames consumed vast waves of property, also coming up america bidding farewell to jimmy carter. the 39th us president is being honored at a state funeral in washington. and he'll be laid to rest later today in his hometown to plains, georgia, and growing fears of election meddling by 11 months, cuz the billionaire endorses the far wide alternative for germany in the run up to

next month. nationwide election. the library golf. it's good to have you with this. we begin this thursday with the worst wildfires that california has ever faced. thousands of firefighters are battling destructive blazes across the los angeles area and have not yet managed to bring the flames under control. the wind whipped fires or destroying homes and forcing residents to flee. at least 5 people are confirmed did. more than a 1000 buildings. we understand have been destroy fires rage and the hills across los angeles, or as a helicopter, carrying water slides above the flames. in a futile attempt to dump in the inferno fires are not burning in at least 5 different areas across the city and beyond. the latest in the heart of hollywood,
6:02 pm
in the policy, it's a coastal region close to the malibu neighborhood. over a sizes and structures have been destroyed and the number is expected to rise. this was the 1st area to be ravaged by fire after the blaze broke out on tuesday. almost everything in this shopping outlet has been destroyed. this man returned to his home into policies, neighborhood on wednesday. all that was left was rubble and burned tags. cars to everybody's last, not just this community, community next door. i'm sure all the people up there are lost. everything is pretty devastating. this is pretty devastating us president joe biden, and the governor of california gavin you some have visited los angeles mayor car in
6:03 pm
by said while both offered help the winds are proving to be overwhelming. i spoke with president buying today and governor newsome earlier today. and they assured me a full federal and state support as we head into tonight, we are still facing strong interact with the conditions which are partly responsible for the spread of the plays improved on wednesday night board are expected to worse and again. if a more now enjoyed by ben ellen, he's the california state senator. he represents the 24th, the senate district, and that includes hollywood and the santa monica mountains. areas of los angeles county. you joins me tonight from santa monica. it's good to have you with us on the program. unfortunately, under these circumstances, can you tell me, mr. allen, what's the situation in your district right now? a devastating we've been following this very closely. that the whole community, the policies has, it's like a bomb, went off in that area, a massive,
6:04 pm
massive destruction. the hollywood fire that was mentioned. thankfully, they were able to get a really good handle on it and still burning. but there's been incredible progress made and very little damage to structures in hollywood. but in the policy it's, it's a different story. and just it's devastating as a number of my very good friends and lost their homes where, you know, there's massive evacuation zone. there's a whole logistical challenge associated with evacuating. tens of thousands of people from a, from a difficult terrain. but it's been, it's been a very general a couple of days as you can imagine. los angeles in may or we understand has lifted evacuation orders for hollywood. does that mean that people can go back to their homes? yeah, so yes, that's right. so people can go back in that in that area. and we were very worried . and in fact, in fact, it was quite a, a serious concern with regards to the number of people that live in hollywood hollywood is a, is a, is a densely packed community. so,
6:05 pm
so lifting those orders also reduces the strain on the regent. we were really worried that with having that activate that entire community, it would really straighten the region up in the policies is still a very much a, a no, no return zone. mister elliot, are you satisfied with the response to find these fires that we've seen? so far as well i'm, i'm, i'm glad that these big put some assets in place before hand because we knew that there was going to be the risk of fire. the president immediately responded to the governor's call. and as you declare to a maximal emergency, and there's been a lot of of what really, really positive assistance that started to come through. we have fire trucks coming from all over the state, back all over the west. we have fire trucks coming in from arizona and nevada, oregon, but clearly they're, they're still wasn't enough on the ground. part of what made this really hard is that the winds were in usually intense. and we also had several fires happening all
6:06 pm
at once, which really put a strain on our local ability to, to fight all those fires at the same time. so of course i'm not satisfied because in the end of the day we lost so much of a community on but i do know that that that is the system has been kicking into gear and is providing us with a lot of assistance now. yeah. but, but the devastation is, is tremendous. i mean, we've, we've had reports from firefighters saying that, you know, they've run out of water in, in certain circumstances, or they've tried to hook up to fire hydrants. and the pressure was simply too low because everyone was tapping into the water grid. i mean, it's hard to imagine in a place like los angeles, is it possible that greater los angeles was caught off guard by this? yeah, i mean remember that these are, the policies are up in the hills so that one of the challenges was that you have to
6:07 pm
pump the water up. and when the power went down and they, they, they depleted the water resources up in the hill already. then the water pressure started to drop because he didn't, he didn't have the capacity to keep pumping all the water up into the hills. that's a big part of what ended up happening. i longed. a very good friend of mine is a firefighter and was out there finding the fire, the big, big so that, that was, that was the heart of the problem. i mean, clearly we have a lot to learn from this. yeah, and we're going to have to be, we have to really invest a lot more in that water infrastructure going forward. i understand that you have sponsored legislation to help residents and 1st responders get in and out of fire danger areas. and i ask you that because of the pictures that we've seen, the last 24 hours of, of highways with abandoned cars, people had to basically leave their cars and use their legs to evacuate. how have the evacuations now with this and media in hindsight, and how do you think the evacuation is have gone? yeah, we've got very chaotic. they literally had to start bulldozing cars out of the way
6:08 pm
just to be able to allow the 1st responders to go up. part of my, our do, we have a major housing crisis in california. we need to figure out more ways to produce more housing. however, i don't believe that a smart way to grow is, is by building and very high fires exams. and if, if, if, because if that's the, that's one of the many lessons i think from the last couple of days. so, you know, from my perspective, our housing strategy ought to be focused on info and in the cities that are transit ridge and jobs ridge as opposed to continuing policies that, that expand housing in, in a very high firestone. i mean, you know it's, it's so hard to get in and out of these regions when there's a fire and it really caused some, some, some, i had some challenge both for the people fleeting in, for the 1st responders that were trying to get in there. this california state's editor been allen. mister l a. we, we know it's a busy time for you right now. we appreciate you taking the time to talk with us and we wish you even all your constituents all the best in this disaster. thank you . thank you. back thank you so much for staying in the united states. the state
