this is an idea, the is really government likes an idea, the rest of the world does not. what today the winehouse is trying to roll back drums, the idea of creating the riviera of the middle east. that means no us troops, no us money, relocation of the palestinians now will only be temporary will. will this ever happen? all of this may have been a trial balloon, floated by trump to get reactions. there's plenty of that i bring golf and berlin. this is the day the that's what he proposes. he's there nonsense after nonsense is nonsense. this is an out of the box idea. that's who president trump. is it easy? simple clothes, lawrence. any forum events between c was not meant as a hostile vote. it was meant as a, i think, a very generous move. the president has not committed to putting boots on the
11:03 pm
ground in gaza. most certainly there is no plan behind. he has also said that the united states is not going to pay for the rebuilding of gaza if there is. it's not a plan that has any connection to reality into the phone. it is cruel. and that way said it'd be upset. also coming up sabotage and spying in the baltic sea, a series of incidents has neither on high alert and it's believed vladimir putin might be behind. do you have noticed that nate is ability to respond and the security of the see route in the board exceed? i'm the fred and that the all repeated incidents we have. the also shape isn't not entirely clear, but you can see what our viewers watching on cbs in the united states and to all of you around the world. welcome. we begin the day with the future of gauzy, according to donald trump. this week the us president,
11:04 pm
shocked much of the world when he suggested that the us it should take control of the gaza strip on it and redevelop it. a riviera of the middle east is how he described. he also said the more than 2000000 palestinians living there should be re settled in egypt and jordan. no one wants to live in a demolition site and said, well was israel notified beforehand did is rarely prime minister netanyahu did he know about trump's proposal? which date is really government said that it has already begun preparations for the departure of large numbers of palestinians from the guns and strip we have more now with this report on the us president, donald trump's proposal to clear goals of rivets, civilians is strongly rejected by goals and themselves. ready we want to make it clear, it's a trump onto global leaders on the palestinian people are rooted in that alone. we have a fitness, the roots of all the trees that we will never give power. london golf. uh, no, we
11:05 pm
a bundle now along in the west bank. you mean or of dine here is better. it is better than going anywhere else. no. because you have nothing after losing your land in the country and home. a lot of clifton trump proposed that the united states takeover garza and resettle the eva, 2000000 palestinians living the 2 spoke to me. do it international condemnation. in the search for solutions. we must not make the problem worse. if it is vital to stay through to the bad, the bulk of international law. it is essential to avoid any form of ethnic cleansing. the proposal to be successful gardens was also spend by neighboring countries, jordan and egypt, which trump had previously suggested should welcome them in. but the i did did find
11:06 pm
favor with israel's prime minister benjamin netanyahu almost the actual idea of allowing for his cousins one to leave the leave. i mean what's wrong with that? they can leave. they can then come back, they can relocate and come back. but you have to rebuild guys if you want to rebuild, because you can't have it. this is the 1st good idea that i've heard. it's all remarkable idea. as the diplomatic for rory continues, the white house appears to be contradicting trumps intentions to resettle godson's permanently. and if the president has made it clear that they need to be temporarily relocated out of gaza for the rebuilding of this effort. again, it's a demolition site right now. it's not a livable place for any human being. this distance is adding to the confusion of it from some tensions cus, involvement in the middle east. well i'm drawing now by augment jameel and he's a member of the po loos palestinian central council and
11:07 pm
a former head of the strategic affairs unit of the palestinian prime minister's office is drugs and is good to have you with us. what was your reaction when you heard president trump talking about seizing gaza and creating what he said would be the riviera of the middle least. and that's really cool. things came to my mind. the 1st one that's this is a feeling that the history, the dentist after this event, the photo. but this is i continue with the 4 along the module that's thinking, cleansing, is that a long time ago, like, no, we have that many kind of precedent. and joining the black, the 2nd thing came to my mind that this is actually been doing one other projects. and last already for you last year like okay, is out and get it questionnaire. the plan that was in his speech and offered university february of 2024 and paid as may be other and more projects
11:08 pm
of it's around spreading. guess a to understand the project life, for example, joseph benjamin, the professor of washington bowls or a detailed plan for interesting gas or florida, 350 years, according to what he's called to be an illiterate thing that draws fer where's the guess? i wouldn't be frustrated for uh, kind of region the project. yeah. this but i'm a, i can see that it's around. so is it transforming the universe? it is not only the police to be an issue. he's the point of shooting. the american government is changing the climate to international regime and many things as we need going for them. so i think you, we are facing in you and you are the annual, but it is going to at the same con, which is continue with the, for an older project or for i think, a cleansing and gets a when you say
11:09 pm
a new reality is there any world, any reality in which you can see trumps gauze, the idea actually happening and getting off the ground. i know i accidentally actually i don't is see uh anything will happen unless that is it wouldn't be uh, he was much like the chasms with luckily and even under any circumstances and the other people, including. so the idea made a very clear position that we are not accepting any uh, new regional dealer. there was also a listing of the state order scanners that must have is the west bank gazda on the east jerusalem. and even if president trump uh, voice this idea as a trial balloon, even if some people maybe would say that he had no intent for it ever happening. the fact remains that he has gone public with this idea it's out there. now,
11:10 pm
what if fixed, do you see this idea of having on the palestinians is really tell us, do any relationships and the greater middle east a little the 1st moment it came to my mind that it's wrong maybe has this like as a kind of negotiations back take, he is having gay, the trying to start with of a, a high price and asking for a very high price to better students can exit and make it make concessions. i may get it booked at the same book when i see how trump is and working on different flavors in the world. the international organizations live in. i think you'll see it. yes. and here's the, the actually, they're thinking that this is both of the way we have to think it's a good to remember that that is the outcome. indeed, that's an option you wouldn't because the 1st day of them was what was on the also
11:11 pm
have a buddy a me. yeah. and yeah, 30 the team is literally me say strange details, but it didn't work here for this guy. maybe he thought that by buying this at all funding or my having such a plan that he can have it for selling the item, you have to accept. the zation with is an accept any lesion of the, the price of the 1st a working back from discipline. and guess i more, more it evening actually even what fair. his stuff like is the what's called the comments and i think it is maybe not really just the bundle. and tom thinks that he can have the day over. i guess i have the ownership there as even he wants to add a note to him. he will not send the troops, he will not send money. he will not spend money if he wants to add up countries and
11:12 pm
maybe you'll countries to find on the, for mr as well as a project there. yes, i said, what is it? what is this make? donald trump then in your eyes, is he now an adversary, an enemy of the palestinian people? it does not do in politics. it either way you don't think, let's say 5 people like this actually is. and tom is a populace was natalie and i am for us, maybe he wouldn't do. uh, he was one of them for the nice thing, of course, in the sense would continue with the students out of 14 millions around the world. but at the same time, i think uh tom is not any mean one of the seasons won't be, he is the enemy of the international regime. he is the enemy of justice and freedom and since determination around the world is plan of not exclusive for but his time his plan is that he's much white than present that tested more. you know,
11:13 pm
we've heard that israel's military is preparing for large departures of palestinians from gaza. and what is your message to those in israel, who would seize jobs and also a next the westbank. so that should, even though suspend the situation is really the reading and i don't know how it's will continue. the maintenance is then the stability would continue with it. or we have more of an $800.00 chick wants now. and that is to the solve the lowest bang, it's a classic lesson. violence is escalating. and so the form is what is actually the, you know, from the plans inside the united states. it's not much different to the attorney who's government insight as a and they are even in the finding is that i, it's, since it's not, i believe because not the, even the,
11:14 pm
that the by you on the use of busy on the movements, which is the enemy over the scene is any way, but i didn't think 20 i any any the on the team of this such a state and all that we have a we have the it is must to think i get a game and a game about once isn't it? can you i was going to not only for the scenes, but even for them. okay. of mine is in member of the peel those palestinian central council. mr. us, and we appreciate your time and your insights tonight. thank you. thank you. germany is taking part in a new new operation aimed at increasing surveillance and showing a stronger presence in the baltic. sea follows several incidents of damage to under sea cables and other infrastructure says 2023. there have been numerous occasions where telecommunications, electricity, or feelings have been disrupted between sweden and finland, estonia lafayette,
11:15 pm
at the wayne here in germany, dw is julia sold dell that it was on board, the 1st german vessel taking part in the native operation as it set off into the baltic sea from the northern german coast of the crew of this german worship are preparing for a new mission. apparently there being deployed at short notice as part of the new nato operation called the baltic century. for the next 8 weeks, the vessel with its crew of around 60 will patrol the baltic sea. their aim is to deter and confront any threats to critical underwater infrastructure, such as data cables and gas pipelines. are you putting a 300 outside into the deployment zone? i, the contributor returns by monitoring the seat area without a sense, as like a radar of optical sense of such as cameras and of cause. binoculars,
11:16 pm
which are still important. you will observe. the merchant ships passed by. we will take a look at other warship sense uh, setting around and we will paint a picture of the situation and shed with our allies of phone documents if i've been getting tired. the mission comes after a series of incidents and recent months, where under c cables were ruptured often after ships such as this one, which we are traveling to or from russia drug there, anchors on the sea bed. some of the region feared the damage could have been caused deliberately, although it has yet to be established, whether these were acts of sabotaged by russia or the result of negligence. but nato countries wants to keep a closer eye on the region, regardless is whether any i wouldn't say this situation is exceptionally tense. but you have notice that nate is ability to respond and the security of the see route in the boat exceed. i'm to fred and then repeated incidents where the also shape isn't not entirely clear,
11:17 pm
but then you worry about shop to be exact. and this comes clause, this operations control room is the beating hearts of the ship and of its mission. all the data collected on the market ball surveillance deployment is put together here. it will often devi sticks where the most important very roots run, where the most important traffic junctions are. you so that we know the area here on our doorstep. it can detect any anomalies or afternoon mileage cuts, and pitched and con for the countries involved in the operation like germany. knowledge is power. they hope to find out more about what has been taking place in the baltic sea. and they believe showing a stronger presence in the region can help prevent further incidents from happening . alright, joining me now is benjamin schmidt. benjamin was once a europe and energy security advisor at the us state department. he's now a senior fellow at the university of pennsylvania center for energy policy. it's also a member of the council of foreign relations benjamin. it's good to have you back
11:18 pm
on the show. it's a big week in the baltics of latvia, stoney, lithuanian, or cutting off their electrical grid from their former soviet partners, russia and bella roofs. that's right, brand, it's great to be here. and it is a frankly historic week. right now we're seeing that the baltic states are ready to finally after many years of preparation. and some of this was already being prepared when i was back in the state department of doing diplomacy, energy, diplomacy, directly with those 3 baltic countries. they're trying to get away from the old rail network, the uh, bellows, rush, or lafayette with we need to. sonya network. that was the soviet era electricity grid on, in synchronized, finally with the european grid. and that's really important for cyber and physical security of energy infrastructure. and it's also something that we saw that had to happen within 48 hours with respect to ukraine,
11:19 pm
as russia was massing at the border before it's a full scale invasion of ukraine in 2022. now the premiums did this, synchronization very, very rapidly. the baltic states simply didn't have to do it as fast, they could do a lot of preparations, and we're really at this moment of truth now to see if this works. i suspect that they will be very well prepared. i have talked to people across the region including in this donia recently about this and um, and there has been a lot of lot of expert work analysis and an official support that's gone on. so i expect this will be successful. basically most of the power is, is coming over land, but there are important underwater electrical connections as well. right? that's right. brent d s. linked to cable, that was ruptured by the eagle s a cargo carrier on christmas day of this year between finland and sonia and the gulf of finland. that is one of 2 electricity
11:20 pm
cables that connect the baltic states outside of their, their region to finland in the case of the s link one and asked when 2 tables. of course, you also have the, uh, the north volt cable between uh lithuania and sweden. uh, those are tables that are building ex resiliency uh to any sort of action uh to the synchronize. and although that was kind that doesnt basically stop this thing to cable, been yeah, that cutting didn't basically stop the uh, the synchronization effort. but this is something that bite over to him doesn't want to say he does not want to see the 3 baltic states move away from the old soviet system. and so i think that there is significant reason to believe of that act was, you know, basically timed to disrupt, to this synchronization if it is indeed shown that russia was behind to that cutting. and as the finish media has shown, that vessel was stopped just basically minutes before it would have ruptured the
11:21 pm
other cable, the s link one cable. and even in the absence of both of those, i think the baltic states will basically be able to uh, synchronize course. they have one still still standing. one is gone and swing to cable. but so viewers understand, you know, those ad redundancy, those and the ability to have grid balancing and things like that. so while the synchronization will take place that will take place at a higher threshold of risk. and then if you have all of these additional pieces of infrastructure functioning between that brings us, of course, to the report that we just saw, of nato was now on a mission to protect these vital underwater cables. talking to me about just help wondering will of this, this infrastructure is for members of nato to it's absolutely vulnerable, and it's absolutely something that nato needs to continue to step up and bolster the defenses of and to turn in. so i've, i've called for nita vertical for constipated mechanisms to be basically announced
11:22 pm
by nato headquarters. i called for that in brussel at nato headquarters in the, in december before the latest caught in the multiple kind of response. did you get to that hasn't happened i, i can say that for the audience that has happened unfortunately. thankfully they did announce this, this operation baltic century that use a positive step forward. but again, you need to have those large scale political statements as well. so that we can say that the crime when we know what your doing, we know that your doing it and more importantly, even to tell the criminal in this, we can tell our own people across the west. but that nato is, is functionally standing up and who is having that sort of political courage to take that step. and, and i think that there are still countries including germany and a few others that have been pushing back on this, leaving that, that would somehow corner hold escalate. these would be the kremlin rather than what it really will do is determine the kremlin. and of course, we've seen this continue to go on. uh, you know, there's been caught after class after class. i couldn't,
11:23 pm
i'm going to tell you right now, these are not accidents. there may be one or 2 mixed in there that could be accidents, but there was a very low probability. speaking with experts and officials across the region that these are considered accidents as a median stripe is a certain recent weeks. what do you think that the response that we're seeing particularly bought by nato, but to these acts, as you say, of, of sabotage are, are these responses, are they robust enough to look, nieto has at a technical level in an operational level, i think done everything that it should, i, i think that, you know, standing up a critical sub see, uh, basically some of the infrastructure protection sell at nato headquarters on a political level standing up that same sort of operational mission at nato. mark on maritime command in the united kingdom, outside of london. that's, that's a success. and also this, this operation baltic century that's well needed. but those are things that are
11:24 pm
below the political level. and right those, you know, some of those decisions are made the political level, but we need to also have the to be coordinated statements from nato itself. at the highest levels at the invested doria level or the head of state level. that they are aware that russia is behind it least some of these mean. and we've seen there have been attribution of some of these incidents, especially the onshore ones related to energy and critical infrastructure. and yet we still haven't seen middle article for all and, and that is something that is missing and needs to happen right away. well between what would you say to anyone who is not convinced that russia is behind these acts and sabotaged that? we've seen a look brand i have been working for the past 2 years. in addition to the work that i've done for years before this on nato's eastern flank, repelling russian energy line, influence and hybrid threats. and i will say, i'm going to be releasing the 1st in a series of reports here at the university of pennsylvania later this month. i hope in the next couple of weeks showing basically case studies of waiting,
11:25 pm
which i've spoken to literally, you know, nearly a 100 experts officials, divers subsidy explosives experts, substitute infrastructure of operations firms. and it's very, very unlikely in our analysis that we're seeing many, if any of these be accidents, and we really need to see, it'd be, again, the political courage to call a spade a spade, to understand what that is, that we're, we're confronting because without confronting that 1st, the kremlin doesn't know that we're taking them seriously, truly, seriously. and in the same time, we also need to understand so that we can deter this and, and this is not just in northern europe ran, we're seeing this just after that, that christmas day incident in the gulf. and when we saw a cable cut near key loom taiwan and, and again, given the wrong message to global thor 3 and maintenance. well, let me, i've got a minute left here. let me take this back to where all of this started, the, the ukraine more and the sabotage of north stream pipelines isn't what's going on.
11:26 pm
now. russia's response to that, to what i think that russia, yeah, i do with great skepticism. the reports still that uh, that basically these uh, their, their reports that either the united states or a premium sale boat were to blame for the north stream explosions. there are a significant amount of evidence in questions that need to be answered. and again, i'm not talking about conspiracy theories, but fact based satellite imagery, some of which will show in our report, much of which is already public that has not been explained in the media that show russians even more for vessels not. they're just the right before and or through blue up, but in the months and years ahead of time. so that's part of this, and i think that we're the same time we're seeing russia basically expand its hybrid operations well beyond the theater of, of it's more in ukraine and trying to undermine confidence of the electorate. so that, that are western officials can protect their, you know, civil infrastructure from damage. and so i think this is all absolutely connected brand that we need to push back much more of
11:27 pm
a separately both and supporting ukraine of course. and also in pushing back against, you know, or of new jo against the russian and hybrid operations against nato in northern europe. more abruptly, benjamin schmidt is always benjamin. good to get your take on this. we appreciate your valuable insights tonight. thank you. thanks, brian. great to be here. so they continues on line your find this on x, also known as twitter, and on youtube videos, you can follow me on social media, rid golf tv, and remember whatever happens between now and then tomorrow is another day. we'll see you then everybody the,
