is contributing by talk within nato to the pillars. we spend nights ourselves. i am cautiously optimistic that we will succeed here, bicycle and in terms of our presence in god, it was about 60 states. in lithuania, you know that itself is a presence there and that my parliamentary group is always support shop leading to this way. now, i have been to the base where the gate is being set up and this is a commitment that will remain and expanded on ms. chris now says the max from where you're standing right now today was your message to donald trump. the board dropped his guns off on sale. that message is very clear and straightforward. we are very much interested as your opinions to have a good relationship with us and to maintain this relationship lucy, ourselves as partners. we see the u. s. a. to investigate. why is it not unimportant, size? the height of nato to visit d. u is also an important part of ne toes. we are in
2:01 pm
a political the lines. it's not just the military alliance as a political alliance as well. i see the news and we have so far have the same understanding of the open society. we should be a market economy, democracy, tylen liberal values, and i hope we will continue to share these values and develop a relationship on that basis. and then how much do you have in the democrats once for you to confirm is dead was maps, you defined a couple of points that you said or non negotiable? is this the case in economic policy when you're talking to the social democrats that you will not budge on certain issues for him? and you touch briefly on the fact that i can sure to your campaign on mobilize a lot of left party voters. like would you say that the a symmetrical,
2:02 pm
the a mobilization of them is mac will also had an effect, right? for the election campaigns, concepts had it cuz advantages. so i was a bit skeptical all the time. this was very worried at seeing the dropping voter turnouts. i'm seeing such a high vote to turn out as we've had yesterday is a comes encouraging most right. it's free for the democracy. it's what from an election campaign turnouts or that we've had since 90 percent in the seventy's. now we have a 23 point, something percent low to turn out to my friends at age 2.5 percent, which is a very good sign for our democracy. we've had a very intense political debate in germany, which is something like very much welcome in this debate. but we have seen an interest in politics that we did not have for many years before. so i'm pleased about that other issue, even if not surely a mobilization didn't just happen to me on their own supporters,
2:03 pm
but also on the other side of the street been an additional $3000000.00 voters for the c d, u and c, s u. i mean, we were aiming for a further 2000000 over 21. we've added 3000000 voters. i mean, that's a real success for us instead of c 4. sorry. what was the last part of your question? yeah. and i know the trustworthy when in terms of economic policy and public and formulation generally insane, we need to do everything we can to retains the competitiveness of our economy and not to anything that we can our economy, a bigger gate lives with by noticing, we have our opinion about the mission, guys, citizens, if we can really security benefit to the book, i guess we cannot leave it the way it is that it's and i think the s p d may also see that there was an attempt to address this in the last parliament, when it wasn't taken out by the coalition, but we can face time,
2:04 pm
take them associated with that and it was on that then the energy prices, we need to lower them. so and assume it's but it is offensive. you have it. and so it doesn't mean that we have to, to subsidize the grid fees the or power back and concrete does have more power generations of bones. but we need to get the sense, build more gas fired power plants. we'd agreed on that before. it was just a question of where and how so this is something we can iron out with a social democrat, somebody that says, democrats, north, i'm gonna say they're very much interested in me for the federal republic as well rather than federal state. they're remaining a power generation federal state. so i really am confident that the social democrats, if they're thinking about the core voters, these are the workers in germany poses in the front of the loft and hundreds of thousands of them have voted to um for us. and go to the s p d thinks about them, core voters, then i think they would support us again. there's the approach, ms handbook. i'm so you know i'm,
2:05 pm
i'm up to him. thank you for samantha displacement with you. what's referred to your conversation with mr. shaw, it's about the transitional period. what are your expectations? if it gets them from when you get that? as of yesterday, we understood that he was going to be informing you about meeting with for need as well. our expectation is quite clear that from now on how we want to work hand in hand and ensure that we prepare the way for a smooth transition to the german government doesn't make any long term decisions without our involvement. it's positive side. this is true in terms of personnel decisions as well and integrating this memorandum of on. and we have a memorandum of understanding with the german that we sent to the german government that set out the points that we think are important in terms of working together and transitional period. i belong to them. i know this a woman in the last row of this. yeah. um, so on the started. so i asked yes,
2:06 pm
i've got a question on the ac, mr. mound. zip. i typed in there, but you said that you want to remove instead of the breeding ground for the a, f d, a to cost. and what is your response to nuclear power? kind of the key for flatter thing that nuclear power is one of the main issues that the a, f d as eats the years to get so many votes as i think they focus on migration and the economy team in, on, with reference to both of those issues all by some of these advice and we need to find good solutions towards on power generation is one aspect of this and us, but as we're all aware, so i could at least you know, you can't just switch it to the nuclear power plants on and off de commissioning, and commissioning them to takes a long time to come and do this. having a band on this map pulling them is something that will be important. whether we
2:07 pm
commission them or re commission them or build new nuclear power plant isn't going to be decided in this term most i wouldn't have thought mr. hoke, as a message at the moment is stronger. mister maps. another question to you in terms of the blocking minority and the 2 thirds majority in the german panama, i'm surprised that this morning that kind of money. the money that the state takes in should be enough. and the should be sufficient for the german armed forces. who said that i missed a flight. i yes, mr. flying across the line. and so my question is, are you planning the mass until the 24th of march? i believe was the day, but to do anything specifically such as that, you might even what you could see. i'm putting together a special fund or modifying the debt, break people in the field for solely with view to defense capabilities. mature. many considerations on this point have not been completed. and 1st of all, i would like to get the assessment of the social democrats, the green party, doctor room before me and the other part to try to come and be before we come to
2:08 pm
a decision. we know that the german armed forces will need a lot more money in the next few years. how we're going to organize something we would all have to talk about. i agree with a colleague and stuff like that. we need to live within our means in terms of tax payers revenue. this is one trillion euro is 1000000000000 years of tax revenue. so it's nearly a force that my gd team gets me to this. but these are issues that we will be discussing with the parliamentary groups that will be in the 20th german parliament . it slides that since it's by it. and now seeing that maybe you wanted to ask a question in the 2nd couple. the no say to haven't got to cut that info to noise german on functions you thought you can use to be said. now the german chemicals industry is hoping that you will be $57.00, which is pretty until this be supporting the interests of industry. so will it be
2:09 pm
health or will it be industry you'll be supporting kind of getting some done well, i would have to say that to them. the c p. s is an issue. the chemicals industry in germany has had a very strong position in germany, in the past, over their important sizes, declines in recent years. but the plastic generation often is an issue that's being addressed in brussels. so i will be involved in the discussion. they're always trying to combine both things, the competitiveness of our industry and protecting our industry from p. s. a. 's for example. um is island huckabee itself and i would like to ask my question english on some of these teams yet open and i hope you can respond to me in english. i'd be delighted if you could . anyway. mr. limits. you said that you spoke to
2:10 pm
a manual macola last night. when will you be speaking to the u. k. prime minister, psychiatrist, i'm a, i'm what can you tell him? and mr. might call you say that defense in europe has to be boosted and foster. what will you be doing in germany to boost defense for the rest of europe? because you're, you're a pin punt, as we'll be looking at. you see a little bit closer. does your thoughts or does it. you will allow me to speak in durham and i know your jones good enough on some the other me to kiss tom a and then let's go from i o and get to the for not to have had a number of phone calls with kissed. i'm in recent weeks last weekend, for example of semantics care to counselors both act as a c and i said to him that i very much welcome the fact that the k is now full participation on your own is coming closer to the you because he had a skills and i was very pleased that his stomach and the manual. my. com met. so i sent him and went to washington together and had these talks there together by
2:11 pm
compass because of the election campaign, the german chancellor was unable to be there. but i very much hope in the future that the german chancellor would be able to speak with the other tubs of state and government of european countries. and i would always want to involve us because in this case, on 50 polish prime minister, the town of tusk. for example, and other eastern european heads. when this task is very important, when it comes to security defense, the message has to be clear in europe before most it's is speaking with one voice. we are united. this is the prerequisite for everything. and some industry the member states need to go 1st. i mean, to expect that all 27 member states will have the same view on everything isn't realistic, obviously, but the mission of the goals, but it's not the big about the states. i'm thinking of the baltic states smaller countries and they're going to have to consider their political minds of strategy and status and develop
2:12 pm
a common policy on that basis. and i am confident that this will take place from 4 to feel because the time if you have fog. absolutely right. for us do the name of a we can only take one or 2 more questions to use this as a miss repair. this will be our next question. thank to come out. just meet again. look out mountain that was nothing to them since the coming. i would like to come back to turning people away at a german borders. mister lindman said this was a must with the coalition agreement. if you can't manage to agree on that, they won't be in the government either try to do. you are tied on both of us to do stick to that. if the us we did doesn't agree to the stella to fuzzy solution except a 2nd. i am confident defensive. and as i said yesterday evening, you quoted zones for a car on television as well that in the coalition agreement, and brenda berg led by the s p d. together the midst of what's going on, it is or so from what do you want? a formulation of this kind is contained in the coalition agreement there with
2:13 pm
somebody sending people back at the german borders. nobody is talking about closing the board or just none of us. even though some people argue this during the election campaigns, but nobody wants to close germany's borders, but we do need to protect germany. supporters better. we need to re gain control to regulate source for the inflow of people into our country. and i think for reasons of the constitution in a, you know, it is possible and even necessary to cite send people back at borders even if it's only for a period of time. so that german board, as i said, for a time, because i very much hope that was a g, a s c comment with all your 10 words asylum policies from 2006, 6 on 2026. we'll have common solutions and that it gets system is supposed to come into power in summer 2026. and we cannot wait until then, which is why i would stick to my guns on this and say it's extremely important that
2:14 pm
we address this issue. and i believe that the social democrats will be open to finding a common pass when it comes to this issue. and that's who i think is auction human m. as in matt, as you were saying, you are going to be talking to the s p d. i haven't heard you say anything about the green party, are you not going to be speaking with them? no exploratory talks of the green party. now, mr. dawn sizes, in the transitional period, i'll be speaking with the f p. p and the green party. for the reasons we have said, but there is no majority with the green party to form a german government. so there's no point having sports or talks. and there's no point entering into coalition negotiations because we can't even have a majority with them. so the priority for us, for me, remains with the social democrats, but naturally we will speak with all the other fundamental in parliament in the future and talk with them. yeah, hi to book this, talk all about business. the been the,
2:15 pm
you're talking about the majority in the parliament, but if we have $328.00 votes together with a succession, democrats and that's 17 more votes, and we need to have an app saving towards family. i experienced a phase that was with the f d t where we had a majority of 4 vote since about the kind of and we didn't lose a single vote for an entire term of office in such a 5 minutes of why should we not manage it with the majority will like to have now, how may i assist with again, it is almost the mountains of what i would like to know whether chancellor, under the american has congratulate you. and if not, would you have wished her to. and the 2nd question is, how far along are you when it comes to planning your cabinets? have you already started talking to people as it'd be helpful to know, because it's due for the matter of kind of look for. and i'm going america has not yet congratulated me, but i may have overlooked that. i'm because there are several hundreds of text that i got over the course of the evening. but thank you for referring to the question of personnel of social media is remembering all manner of things. there's
2:16 pm
a fake dpa news message, a blank. it is fake news. 7 or 917. you're saying that in the executive committee we had already distributed. the ministers, not a single word has been lost on personnel because it's far too early to do that. yeah. so thanks for asking, let me de bump that ms right now. ok. we are not talking about is going to do what all those last question as well. so you have been listening to a press conference and questions and answers to the cd meter, a free day match, who is in all likelihood. going to be germany's next chancellor. let's break down some of what we've heard with our political correspondence back regards. here with me in the studio. hi parents. we had did all these mikaela course know there at that press conference? she put this to merits the question of what his relationship would be with donald trump. how does the merits address how he sees germany's relations with the united states going forward? i'm saying that preston, he said he wants to maintain good relationship. if so,
2:17 pm
then you as president on a time, he wants to maintain the trans atlantic partnership between the germany, europe, and the us because it's beneficial to both sides. but at the same time, he also said he's very concerned about what he's hearing from the white house, especially when it comes to this piece plan. we don't know much about it for ukraine. now he wants to set the ball how he wants to engage, negotiate with russia above the heads of the europeans, and the germans, not sitting at the table. he says he wants to change that. to me, it sounded a little bit like he wants to mend fences uh with the us. and then you'll also have to see that donald trump actually congratulated the mr mats far as victory. and there was a post on a suited to social. the drum says, now there will be a good time for germany. so maybe this is a little a little start. you know that they can actually talk to each other. but for the
2:18 pm
muscles his head now is we cannot wait. the boat is not waiting for us, so we have to go to swift negotiations to form a government and also says that he wants to team up the other european leaders to be able to, you know, to counter all these attacks that are coming from the vitals. and, and looking to form a coalition, when we heard marriage, they're saying that he'll be talking with the s p d as we've been reporting here. that seems like the most likely coalition outcome between the 2. something interesting that came up in the questions and answers there was, was how much merits we'd be talking to the other parties who might be necessary to get some kinds of was passed. right? yeah, there will be no a transition period if you want. the old government is still in office. still the old johns the from the espy deal is still in office. i'm to finish mad sketchy like that might not happen before or after easter. this is the, the, the time table that be and i'll have but the decisions do before that,
2:19 pm
especially because not constitution the majority to change the constitution if you want to fund the, the army. if you want to reform the, the, the break, then you can do this now with the bottom and that is still sitting there because of the constitution of the after the 1st sitting of the new parliament, which is due in march, then this changes then the, there will be a blocking majority by the fall, right? and for the fall left, they could prevent the, the democratic parties in the middle to change the constitution. and that would have a very dire consequences of for the, for the new government. so it's a complicated situation, that's why he's now talking to the, to the old government parties, to the ftp, the source and the present, the greens to maybe come up with a solution before the new parliament takes office there. and thank you so much for
2:20 pm
breaking all that down for us who've been speaking to a band regards. after watching futures math to make that speech and berlin, i think it's time to check in on the numbers here just to bring everyone back up to speed. we've got official results in the conservative futures merits boys to become next. chancellor, as we've said, it's a cd. you see su block that is set to lead a future government and most likely with the 3rd place, social democrats who been leading the former administration at the far right a f. d took 2nd place, but merits has refused to work with them. let's dive into all those numbers. merits of conservatives that came out on top with a 28.5 percent. the far right alternative for germany doubled their share of the vote to 20.8 percent, making them the 2nd largest party germany's incumbent social democrats suffered at the polls dropping over 9 percentage points to 16.4 percent. the greens fell free percentage points to 11.6 percent. the left party fared better than expected with
2:21 pm
8.7 percent of the vote. the b s. w, which splintered from the left party last year took only 4.97 percent. that is just short of the 5 percent threshold needed to enter parliament and the business friendly f t p also fell below that 5 percent threshold, sending it crashing out of parliament, which is a other smaller parties together took over 4 percent of the vote 2. so how did these actually translate into seats for each party in germany's parliament? here's a graph. the cd you will now be the biggest party and the one to start with $208.00 out of the total number of $630.00 seats. the social democrats currently still the governing party will now have $120.00 seats and the green party, $85.00 seats. the far right alternative for germany. now the 2nd largest party in the parliament will have 152 seats, and the link to the left party will have 64 seats. so the election outcome leaves
2:22 pm
different coalition options as theoretical possibilities. one is between the conservatives and the far right. a f d which would give them an ample majority in parliament, but for judge merits has ruled out a coalition with the a f d. another more likely coalition would be with the s p d. as we've sad. this option would have a much slimmer majority in parliament, but is the most likely one because of mass rolling out collaboration with the far right style briefing, new lice into the german economy will be a focal point of coalition talks after voters that it was one of their top issues, high costs and growing uncertainty, have racks the country since the beginning of the war and ukraine in it 2022, europe. the largest economy has shrunk over the past 2 years and job losses are mounting. business groups are pushing for less bureaucracy and more competitive energy and labor costs to better to talk us through all this. then cassandra,
2:23 pm
son from dw business, joining me here in the studio now. hi, cassandra. the german economy has been flailing for the last 2 years. can at this new conservative leaded government to fix it. it's a little bit ironic honestly that the 2 parties that are set to leave this coalition, one party being the cd, you led the country while a lot of these problems were created. and then the next part of the cd was really unable to solve these problems. but when we're thinking about the recessions that have faced germany in 20232024, these are not easy problems to fix. part of the reason here is a lack of investment, but there have been many calls for more investment from business across germany. not only from the government but also from the private sector to help get things moving again. but there is tension between the problems and the potential solutions, right? so calling for more investment, but on the government side of things, there's a debt break, which means there's a hard feelings on how much invested they could. there can come from the government
2:24 pm
at the same time, there's a shortage of skilled workers, but merits a signal that he wants to track down on immigration though previous efforts have targeted asylum seekers as opposed to skilled workers. um, so while those are going on, you also have draw per see that's really impenetrable. automatically labels exactly . and you have higher taxes and energy prices. so there's a lot of things denting manufacturers. bottom lines right now. and what about exporters? i mean, germany. well, as the economy relies really heavily on exports, can that sector pross ops, the economy? there are a lot of headwinds facing export market, and that comes down largely to manufacturing. so germany for a long time was this export giant, right? there was a, i'm really simplifying here, but a simplified formula of buy cheap parts abroad, put some of the german engineering spice on it, and then sell it as a valuable product and a key ingredient there. i do not want to miss this is cheap energy which previously came from russia,
2:25 pm
but the tap for cheap energy has been turned off. there's just less desire, less appetite for german, expensive goods abroad. and so that's really not good for manufacturers here. and economists are speaking to earlier signalled, okay, maybe there's a way that the new coalition can uh, spur domestic appetite for some of these products. but we'll have to see what comes out of the negotiation talks. thank you so much for bringing us up to speed. there has been speaking to cassandra center from dw business. we can go back over to our chief political editor, mike, have a customer at the see. do you headquarters in berlin where we just heard research match speaking, who i got to ask him a question as well, but do it any surprises there from what do you have to say either in his initial comments or from what he was asked, why? journalist a well, that's what it this way. it is a remarkable change of tone. he's going from election campaigning mode to
2:26 pm
a token. you bit up the, the result that the conservative cd you see is you got because yes, it was a victory celebration here, but it wasn't a triumph for him at all. and having said that, see now, faces forming a coalition, we heard that you already spoke with him on way my call. you spoke with israel's prime minister benjamin netanyahu, and also spoke about bringing nothing yahoo to geometry potentially in the future was raises a very contentious issue. that there's an arrest warrant out for him, and it clearly could be some math told him in this in yahoo that he would not be arrested if he comes to germany. so that would be a remarkable of breach of a german commitments to international law. if that were to happen, so that's very notable because now for the semester of course has a different status as the very likely next salanza on t was no to be k g. when it came to the question of how to both of them and defense,
2:27 pm
a huge increase in spending is needed for that. and that's the 1st issue he will tackle with the social democrats when he sits down with them for. so thank you so much as always for your reporting was d w as chief political editor, we can look up there and that is our show. thanks for watching. so the,
2:28 pm
we want to think about how much history is particularly put in their history still matters today. you need to know where you're coming from. what happened in the country. oh my god, i'm sure it's a big in, oh goodness, with bicycle the night was interesting. as about it, so we have the 2 good impacts individually for to one to overcome the trauma, we want to get out of victim mode, this 77 percent on dw, actually ride road
2:29 pm
guides. know that way around is strictly scientific trip to some pretty cheap places. curiosity is we tried the laura today. in 60 minutes on d, w, the one of the main kinds, oldest ambitions could be within re what do you see? it really is possible to reverse the researchers and scientists all over the world for you know, race against time. they are peers and rivals
