exporters when copenhagen in 2022 or on prices they travel to north korea was cancelled until further notice. it's unclear of what led to the abrupt shot change journalist gene h. lee has come at north korea extensively. could you give us an idea of what's going on here? first of all and which tourists have been back these tours for the 1st western tourist to get into the country in more than 5 years. so it was a baby step on the part of north korea to allow them in. and really a strong sign that the country was starting to open up. you know, we did see russian tours in the country last year, but this was the 1st time we saw some british tours australian tours in the country . but i should point out if they were only allowed into a very special place, which is ross on which is in the far northeast. and it's what we call a special economic zones for an area that the north koreans can kind of use as a testing ground. it's a little bit of a special area. so north koreans course,

there are, they are on a, for economic purposes or are a custom to dealing with foreigners. so it was seen as a, as a, a good step toward the reopening of north korea. but that might also be a reason why they're stepping back. maybe it was too much, too soon at a time when they are clearly unsure about re engaging with the west, unsure about having prying eyes on the ground. certainly devastating for the tour companies that have been waiting for this moment. but as i said, when the announcement about these tours came up, was just hold your horses and wait because you never know with north korea, somebody is going there has been going there for many years. never know until you were literally on the flight. just counting young or on that print opinion or to north korea, whether you will be able to get in things can change at the very last week. you mentioned the waste and those who were allowed to pass on. do we know how they were received there? and if they were able to talk to regular north koreans,

i did see some reports as they did come back with some some insight into what their trips were like. and those would been to north korea before did say that it seemed a bit more restrictive than it was in the past that there every movement was watched and controlled. that is not unusual when it comes to poorest in north korea . they are usually on a very orchestrated trip. but usually there are moments when you can interact with the locals. i think they saw a little bit of that. there were some reports that they were surprised by by how dilapidated some of the structures were, and i'm not surprised at all. the last 5 years has been very difficult for north korea because on top of the border closures where they the country did the machine, did shut that order. that meant that a lot of goods did not come in either. there was the, it was people who couldn't come through as well. not only did foreigners, but also north koreans couldn't come through that border, bringing all the things that they usually bring from abroad. so it's been
2:12 am
a tough time for north korea over the past 5 years. and i think on top of that the sanctions uh yeah, i think that's something that they do not feel comfortable with foreigners see, they are not comfortable with their own people. seeing widely with the state of the, the country as they are very good at controlling the narrative. and that's part of the reason why they restrict the flow of people in and out of the country. and so what we see in their state media is very cultivated and curated view of the country . and so when you open up the country, it does mean that you lose a little bit of control of that narrative. and so that may be part of the concern that they have about letting in foreigners we're going to go and then tell the rest of the world what's happening inside the country. and just briefly, the allowing russians to pyongyang was that a sweetener for rushes later. yeah, absolutely, i don't know, but a sweetener, but it is

a source of income that conjunction is certainly considering as he tries to build this relationship with russia, one of the few friends that they have right now. north korea does have some site that they're trying to build up as potential tourist sites. and right now, chinese tours and russian course are the ones that they feel more comfortable with, who they also believe will understand how to fall into line a little bit when it comes to the messaging up. so i do think the north brands are looking at those as potential avenues for a little bit of income. and those are towards that they might feel a little bit more comfortable with. but let's see. there is a, the canyon marathon, which is set to take place the spring. we'll see if that goes forward. i always have to remind the americans, us citizens, that they are under very strict restrictions when it comes to traveling to north korea. and it comes with both ethical and security concerns. so anyone thinking about north korea has to take all of this into consideration. okay, we'll have to leave it that jean h lee. thank you very much for the insights. really interesting stuff.
