i apologize. we had governor chris christie of new jersey making his way into this building. he was like a rock star. this is them earlier. let's and cameras gathered around. i thought they were here for me. turns out of was wrong. he was treated like a big celebrity. he was and is a big celebrity. apparently came this close to being the vice presidential nominee. you never know who is right or telling the truth, but the rumor was that the run the camp was very interested in having chris christie be on the ticket, but he would have to give up the governorship of new jersey. you can't raise money. the bottom line to but we know it happens. he did not get that. he did not want to give up his governorship. and the bottom line was they went to paul right with my work out just fine. governor tom kean here on that. unnecessary soap opera. good to have you. what do you make of that? that was an issue that forced the sitting governor, it makes a

very tough fund-raising. >> adelle believe it. the only covers are considered. i just was in on the process. i know he was seriously considered. he did not want to be vice president, but he did say if romney were tested he would have to seriously consider doing it. i never heard anything about the rest of it. at the story that chris has given is correct. neil: to put up this story that this was the story? >> i don't know because it makes no sense to me. my following of the story with the governor, that doesn't make any sense. i never heard that even as a rubber. this is brand new to me, and that think it was brand new to me, it probably didn't happen. neil: you don't think it was his people that put it out to try to put a nice face and not giving a number two spot. >> i don't think you have to put a nice face of chris christie. much for the state and to by the way, the opposition party to do it. that is a remarkable record, and as you take bowles in new jersey , the ones i have seen show that the people recognize it and like his outspokenness. neil: they do, but if this ticket were to go out to defeat a minor you don't envision that happening, but a lot of people put him on the top of that 2016 last. do you think he is interested? >> not right now, but i think he might be by then. i have known this cover along, long time. i knew him as a teenager. he is wanted to be governor of new jersey all his life. that's all he ever wanted. now he has it. why should he give it up? neil: the governor. >> well, once this is over. neil: were you going to go, a college president? >> people laugh. neil: could i ask you this? we were chatting, but about the marvelous thing, develop a sense of urgency and action ability

for one of a better word. the debt commission not so fortunate. when not? why was there a need to address the things you folks unanimously agreed to and not a hint of what the debt commission did not? >> well, look, the debt commission is very important. it's a tragedy for the country that was addressed, but our report was unanimous. neil: you insisted on that. i don't want any. >> i did, but suddenly hamilton. both of us as chairman and vice-chairman. neil: that was the goal originally. it somehow fell through. >> is tough. they had sitting legislators. >> including paul ryan. >> we were all this started politicians. from a different era, so we can be brave and say we want to say and do what we want to do and we did have to run for reelection afterwards. neil: yours got action, regardless of what people think about it, collecting dust.

nice guy, but the fact the matter is he did twist some arms and get people to go along with this and understand that there was great benefit for everybody to get on board the plant rather than be divided on the plan. the proof is in the pudding, as the governor pointed out. many of the commission recommendations went instantly into affect. if you think about it, a hell of a lot safer as a result of his efforts. that commission, it's anyone's guess. right now, the wall street journal at a time when we are looking at essentially the linchpin of this entire campaign, the role of government more or less? i kind of think that -- and a heck of a lot smarter than i am, but i think this election comes down to that. it's a battle for how much of the what more less. good to see you. what do you make of what is a stake in will republicans have to pitch? >> two things. obviously they have to be the party of limited government. evergoing to pass a $16 trillion?

♪ neil: you know, that you can certainly in a professional sense for decades now. whether you agree with this or disagree, man is this guy a hell of a writer and a hell of a thinker, and he just distinguishes himself from almost everyone else in the business because it looks beyond what is obvious and sees trends that most people cannot get on. for some times many, many years if ever. a former presidential candidate. a record of moving conventions like the one in 1992 if memory serves me right. but now we face a different sort of environment back then republicans are trying to show that there were very united and ready. we later found out that there were certainly not ready.

this convention is going to say it's ready. the destruction notwithstanding. it will go on to win. what do you make those comparisons? >> well, i think 1992. the idea when they have me up with the lead speaker that night and robbery in that same night and i was introducing reagan basically with my speech was to bring home the 3 million votes and to add those to the 9 million or 11 million that george h. w. bush got and then began the convention to move forward against the democratic candidate. of course then we have ross perot in there. we succeeded that night to all but i think ross perot getting out and and getting back in was fatal for mr. bush. this convention here, i think -- i mean, mitt romney, i think, is looking pretty good. an inside straight to win this. he has to win back something like six of the states that were lost last time. now lose any of mccain's states

like missouri, which is now employed. i think it can be done. one of the best pieces of news i have seen here is the fact that obama is now at 46 and romney is at 47, what is good about that is not the one. difference but that obama has fewer than half of the country saying they want to reelect him, which means what mitt romney has to do is close the sale. he has failed to do it thus far. he has a golden opportunity coming up this week. >> i remember that very well. the one thing to remember, the response to your remarks. ronald reagan's remarks, he would acknowledge having alzheimer's disease cause of that was his last public event if you think about it. one of the things that i sensed out of the party then is that while conservatives are given a chance to speak and voice their collective expression it was not really heartfelt for the party.

more for barack obama then the damage done to the american economy. it will be irreversible. there is a tremendous apprehension and fear of obama getting reelected. i think ryan has helped. as just heard steve a minute ago ryan has helped a man that think they're going to get behind him for that reason. this remains a winnable race. i'll be honest. i think unless we take the house and the senate and the presidency, and i'm not sure it can even be done then, but unless we get that at the country is in grave trouble. neil: the only way you could dismantle health care is to get the senate, even a majority. then by reconciliation you could pick it apart bit by bit. >> one more point. 25% of gdp. the government is spending of the federal level.
