got it right embedding content investing his own money, just that he got a lot more right than the president has. he didn't have to say he was the geek. all he had to say was that he was a successful one. he did, and it worked. taking weight all of the characters at his convention, what we are left with is deciding the character of the guy for whom there was that convention. let ryan say the president is not doing well. let mitt romney make it simple case. no flash or wow. no greek columns. maybe just spreadsheet columns. a business guide to getting us out of a business fix. a nerd in his element.

uniquely qualified for his moment. we found out how comfortable mitt romney is in his own skin this week, embracing who he was and is this week. who he chose not to be this week. a lot of the analysts are saying that you have to work on being more likable. he figured out before a lot of us, but if you lay out a plan to get people working and feeling better about their futures, you know, you're going to be a lot more than just likable. they are going to be worshiping you. any day of any week. all weeks. did that softer side of mitt romney win more women over? >> because everyday, daddy mama rose, which she put on her bedside table. that is how she found out what happened on the day my father died. she went looking for him because that morning, there was no roads. my mom and dad were two partners. a life lesson that shaped me by

everyday example. when my mother ran for the senate, my dad was there for her every step of the way. i can still see her saying, in her beautiful voice, why should women have any less safe than men about the great decisions facing our nation. neil: did you hear that and watch it and see it? did you get a sense that nerds can have passion as well? it is a reminder that this ticket has got to bring those two together. did it achieve it? for women, did it make a measurable difference? sabrina schaper on whether those romney moves worked. >> he absolutely killed the women and i think he did a great job without pandering to them. i don't think there was anybody watching who didn't feel a chill go up their spine.

his affection for ann, his parents relationship, his children and family -- these are things that resonate with women. i looked at my husband on the couch and he thought, wow, have to step it up a little bit. neil: it's funny, because when i heard the rose story and i heard it before, i said boy, i hope they don't put the camera back on me right now. that just got see her. we have these depressions and we put business guys into compartments and some are upset over these ceos and are they boring -- i would like to tell people that they are us. they might have thicker wallets and they might have more impressive resumes. but they are human beings. to be passionate about who and what you are, it has to come through at a convention. did that part come through? and it's that kind of stuff that he had to do? >> i absolutely do agree.

i think that moment when he was talking about the fact, he said to ann, the work you do is more important than the work that i do, it reminded voters that they are life hasn't always been this easy. they have and always had this much money. there was a time when they were younger and had five young children, and i think that is where it resonated. i thought to myself, i have not always been a huge proponent of mitt romney, but i have three children, five years old and under, my husband is working all the time, always thinking about bills. at that that moment resonated with me. that resonated with a lot of other women as well. neil: you could argue this whole, you know, -- you could placate women and etc. did he go the other way by trying to bring up motherhood and this might very well be the case -- but i thought when his

wife and another speaker was doing it, he must be addressing an area where he knows he is weak. he has men but not so much women. what is a have to do to bring it more women on board? >> i think hitting on that likability issue, i keep going back to the fact that i don't want to have to go to the movies. i think a lot of people are saying that we don't know him. teams have had this outer shell. >> i've been going to movies with mitt romney might be a little different. he might have his own 200 seat theater. >> i think you are right. you walk a fine line and you don't want to be pandering. at the same time, i thought we did a really good job of showing that he's not threatened by strong women. he has been surrounded and surrounded himself by strong women all his life. at home with business and government.

mario coumo, the keynote speaker then. governor, it's very good to have you. there has been a lot of comparison with your keynote address. it did set the standard. one popular element came up that you didn't mention the nominees names -- walter mondale, chris christie got in trouble with republicans were waiting 16 minutes to mention mitt romney's name. do we make too big of deal of of this stuff? >> well, i think there's a difference between the two situations. actually. i don't think people have found anything wrong with the governor of new jersey waiting before he used the candidates name. it was that he spent those 60 minutes talking about himself.

i know the governor of new jersey, and he is us terrific speaker. but what they said about him -- could have devoted some of that first 16 minutes to mitt romney. romney people have indicated that. neil: did they roam -- did they run this by the romney folks? did you have to do that? >> no, i did not. neil: you did so eloquently in 1984, the mantra of the party, the cause of the party. the dna of the party. you do that very well in 1984. unfortunately, it didn't help walter mondale. but that's not your fault. chris christie in what he is doing in new jersey, you don't agree with those policies.

but that was -- it was emblematic of the republican approach to tackling huge issues and problems. what is wrong with him using that example? >> if only he would have established some legitimacy as to why he is on the roster. it's not that he said those things. it's that he chose to say them about himself instead of mitt romney. look, i didn't file a complaint. the romney people dead. but it is not a big deal. as a matter of fact, it is nice to hear nice things about what happened in the keynote and how well received it was. it is also a fact that we lost that year. keynote still make the election.

they helped momentarily. they got the spirit up, no question about it. neil: they also launched either event of that ticket loses, the mondale ticket -- it did for the presidential wheels in motion. you didn't respond to that, you can want that job, but it did launch your career. he did launch you into much more national ways, as barack obama did for john kerry in 2004. i'm wondering for chris christie, did this torpedo such talk? >> no. chris is a great speaker and he will continue to be a great speaker. if he keeps going in new jersey at the pace that he is going now, he will be very popular. no matter what happens in this election. that popularity is not going to depend upon mitt romney winning.

so i think he is secure for the time being. of course, you never know. there are two things that i wish could have been, instead of a great keynote speech. i think the first of all, he should be able to get more specifics into the argument. there was a front-page story in which mitt romney said he had plans. this is in "the new york times", it was two issues ago, the sunday paper. he says that i have plans and i have no intention to change them for my vice president or anyone else. if i were obama, i would say, look, i have more friends than you have. and they are all available to the people of the united states of america. the house and nothing moves in with the republicans wanted to

her. and they are in the senate. but they are available to the american people. neil: the president also say that i have a record. >> yes, sure. first, he's going to say that i have plans, using do you have plans. let me see your plans and frankly -- i will support it on the spot. but don't tell me that you have plans, but not details of plans. nixon did that. plans and he won't show them until after you win, -- neil: enough about his general across the board -- [talking over each other] neil: his plans are indeed his record. what is good for the goose has to be good for the gander, right? >> i think he's going to win the. neil: who is going to win? >> obama. he will win by a small margin and he will come out like bill clinton with a great second turn. that. neil: are you going to be in charlotte? >> no, but bill clinton will be in charlotte. neil: cannot call you up their? >> absolutely. the second turnaround, 22 million new jobs, balanced budget. neil: republicans hammering the president all week. some say they are right to hammer him. >> not at all. this job growth -- i don't want to be too difficult, but liars figure and figures lie. figures that come out of washington are not the right figures. i can tell you firsthand that about 3500 people, we have close to 10% better underemployed lawyers of doctorates are the. neil: they work for you now? >> just. neil: doing what? >> [inaudible] neil: they are going to be very angry. they have an attitude. you might say that, but a lawyer, handing me -- neil: >> whatever you say,. neil: you think this goes

against the president. he is holding up pretty well despite all of these numbers. when you make of that? >> i think that this convention says a lot that mitt romney has not defined himself. neil: did he do a good job? >> they did it okay. was he a rockstar? i don't think i was necessary. i don't think he was talking to the people that were in tampa, florida. he is talking to the millions of independents who are trying to make up their minds. trying to figure him out. they want to believe him, because they are unemployed. part of that 15%. they want to believe him, but they don't know him well enough to believe him. and i think he did a good job of defining himself. neil: what will clinch this when all is said and done -- democrats are done next week. workers were to decide that? >> the debates. neil: that would be opportunity for ronald reagan that happened.

that sealed the deal for him. >> the president doesn't have a teleprompter in debates. neil: he's pretty good without a prompter. >> he is very good. but i think that mitt romney is more cerebral and i'm proud to say about 10 days ago, i had breakfast here in the city when he was in the city and i attended a breakfast with him. neil: but you didn't get the quality time that i did with paul ryan. >> i don't claim to be a neil cavuto. neil: in a day and age when thinking was golden. no wonder republicans had a healthy image at the convention. neil armstrong, the astronaut.

political debates on expert neil armstrong knew enough to know that you can't reach for the stars about challenging the norm. enormous not 2% growth in the recovery, it's three times that at a minimum for recovery. the norm is not being grateful for only 370,000 weekly jobless claims. by this time in economics, you should have no claims. the norm is not being happy. not that armstrong was an economist. he reached for the moon and we will mean a realist. he knew what we were. and he knew what we could be. he knew what we could do. he talked about a democratic president named john kennedy.

a trillion dollar deficit. less than 2% gdp growth. neil: the biggest names in business at the convention telling me the biggest problems they see in the economy. this guy has been talking about it long before anyone else was. a record number of ceos of all sizes not only prominently representing the crowd, but prominently representing the 63 speakers. they seem to mean what they say, and what those business leaders are saying is start thinking of us now. is it resonating? >> absolutely. the greatest cancer this country has right now is the debt. it is tapping the vital fluid of our spirit and economic capability and it is really awful at the grassroots level.

now, there is a gentleman who is working two part-time jobs, $9 per hour, happy and calm with twice the jobs. his house is underwater. $65 billion of pension debt that he has to cover, and i guarantee if obama gets reelected, this state is going to raise taxes through the roof. they are going to have to cut the pensions. [talking over each other] neil: with this kind of that in this kind of spending, but it was one thing when ronald reagan, you know, was dealing with the 60 billion-dollar deficit at the time coming in. numbers that are unimaginable, i guess. is there the kind of room for mitt romney to do what ronald reagan did? >> i think so. because the one great asset this country has is a spirit of the citizens. ragan said the bright light on

the hill, and i think that romney got a lot of that. but look at the young vice presidential candidate, paul ryan. he reminds me so much of jack quantity. my hero when i was growing up. compassionate but sensible, fiscal responsibility. we can do this, we just have to get firm leadership. we can't keep mucking around like we are right now. >> what is the line? we have never built a statue to a moderate. >> bold views are what moves this country forward. when we talk about john kennedy and thinking that we can go to the moon when we were failing at one launch after another. ronald reagan talking about record tax cuts, bringing about an economic boom. a fair and balanced for trail up residence there. you argue, take the glasses off and went bold and big.

sand. if you want freedom, come with us. if you want the freedom to chart your own destiny, to go where you want to go. then, the republicans. if you want security and the government take care of you, choose the path where we are on now. i think that that is what they told us. freedom is where i'm going. neil: david, when you look at the plans of mitt romney, they are gentle. they were kind of vague. tax cuts and easing up on regulations, but did mario cuomo have a point when he said you have to start offering more specifics and he is not being specific enough? >> right, i totally agree with that. they pointed out the facts. you can argue you don't like a democrat or republican, but hopefully we will start voting individuals on their records. he really a release date on that. i agree 100%.

what i want to hear is who is going to make the changes? where are these cuts would come through? coming to you are going to go and cut the epa's 40%. tell me you will go and got the usda. tell me you will end these endless subsidies to big corporations. we keep talking about small business, but we are not telling them what we're going to do for small business other than cutting taxes. i am one of these guys that says you can cut my taxes, but until i have a profit, it doesn't affect me. neil: people in general, and we talked about this, they need to be engaged and excited about something. what would it take to excite you to get you engaged? >> i know they are going to have a tax cut and a foreseeable future. i can hire people and grow my business and have plans for the future. neil: okay, patty, it's not that simple for you. what you want? >> i would actually love to know

just what are the rules were to be? what are the rules so that i can plan and i can then hire and move forward based on those. but nobody knows what is going to happen. until then, we are all just sitting back and waiting. somebody tell me what i can do. right now, small business owners are waiting to see what happens. neil: david, that is your point, too, right? >> not only the small business people, but everyone watching this program, the consumer in their wallet. there is money out there. until the consumer starts dumping cash into the world of small business, i will never keep a person on an additional hour because i'm not hiring someone to set them on a school and put them in a corner. i need cash flow first. neil: good for you guys. you make more sense than all of these schmo guys. thank you.
