"the willis report" is next. ♪ gerri: tonight, democrats lost their case for barack obama's reelection at the convention in north carolina. at the same time the national debt crosses a record $16 trillion. and are you better off today than four years ago? the obama folks are not too sure welcome to "the willis report." hello, everybody.

the democratic national convention in full gear in north carolina. president obama barely tested 2008. joining me now, the daily colonist. two of my favorites. i'm going to start with you. it's time to start this. nail down those independents. what the democrats need to do tonight? >> i think that they have to do a couple of different things. they have to try to tap in a subtle way to my guest on the don't want to be too heavy-handed, remind people that they're better off without spending too much time on this. lay out a vision for the future. michele will be talking tonight, and she wants to spend time talking about her husband's character and values and what kind of mantillas. i think i would expect her to

really try to convince people that she is the one who is not just the most competent, but somebody really cares about the future of the country. gerri: turning to you, a totally different playing field in this election. what do you expect them to do? >> and steak and know what they'll try and do. here's the dilemma. he can't promise up and change anymore. he's teeseven seen this. everyone it is the country's better off go vote for him. the vast majorities in not. i'm a college professor. in this particular case we don't get a duel over. historically they stand up and say here's my record. four more years to finish the job by already started.

give me a second. he can't do that. gerri: you were saying their is a little bit of a fatigue factor as well because we have been watching conventions. turning to you, there is also this issue of clinton speaking wednesday night and obama. this is going to be interesting because these are two people who don't go along very well. in incendiary article quoting clinton talking to ted kennedy saying, a few years ago this guy would have been carrying our backs. what do you make of the story? >> i have to say, i've always thought that that "was one that has been around for awhile. the story comes from clinton begging kennedy to endorse hillary. allegedly this, that the president made, but it was racist. with obama. i don't think it was.

he wasn't qualified. experienced. this is the kind of guy he would have been working for, not right for president. at think that's unfair. they don't like each other very much. of the really matters. i don't think most people watching know that, and the president will be very persuasive. >> the difference, clinton had two terms, clinton became a centrist. liberal democrats have not won a second term and have not done very well morning a first term since fdr. clinton moved the party to the center and basically worked with republicans, have a balanced budget, had some great successes of the end, and obama has moved the party back to the left. this is going to be a great california convention. all the california stores there, including the mayor of a lake. if you want to of make america california, this would be the convention for you. gerri: i want to turn to this war on women. i want to read to you what

debbie wasserman shultz had to say over the weekend. she said to my think we believe that women can see through that nice shiny packaging that the republicans have been putting out there, that to what is inside which is really a disaster for women's future, extreme policies. to call some of the women, governors, the ones who spoke at the republican convention, nice, shiny packaging is really an insult, as did? >> it is very much an insult. she refers to them and i think other minority candid it's as being window dressing. i think it's very insulting, and i'm not really sure who she appeals to. the accomplishments of people like mark rubio warnke, people who are really inspiring. so i don't think she helps anybody with those kind of comments. >> the counter to that, she herself is a member of congress, but she herself was put in that

job because a great opera of, not because she's been a great spokesperson, the internal polls of the obama campaign to misuse the word spokesperson they have anywhere to. basically a picture before a picture because she's yours, picture because is a woman. that's all at its worst. an accomplished woman. women who are extremely compass to people, and this kind of rhetoric is just b.s. gerri: could not agree more. a lot of democrats are skipping this convention. we have a whole list of them that we want to show you. is it surprising? or people trying to distance themselves from the president at this point? >> the list i have seen does not look anything out of the ordinary. and the few that have seen are people who are in difficult races. very few are still in the party, unfortunately. we have lost most of them. democrats, they just don't benefit in any way.

the convention, but i don't find it to be like a high number or an unusual number of people. gerri: it does speak to the point we are making, which is the party has drifted left. whereas you saw clinton trying to work with business, obama is tied in private equity. >> this is definitely a time when private equity will put jobs back on the plate. they want to throw these statistics out. they want to run against george w. bush. on his ranch living happily ever after. at the end of the day he's going to run against a guy who's been a successful businessman. unfortunately for them, they spent hundreds of millions of dollars trying to portray him as something he isn't. after that convention it's going to be difficult. this race is close, but jen is moving forward. gerri: quickly to both of you, who will be the most important speech? you first. >> i think bill clinton is probably the most important. i really -- you cannot overstate

the influence that he has in this country and the democratic party and among independent voters. barack obama is doing a good job. on the fence. not sure which way to go. it could post in the direction obama. >> obama has to sell himself. i don't disagree that clinton will be the first opening game in the nfl football. but the president can't convince his own voters to gun belt, he's not going to be successful. gerri: who will be watching. thank you so much for your boss a night. much more from the dnc letter in the hour including neil cavuto, but next a huge milestone coming at a terrible temper the democrats, the national debt topping $16 trillion. where do we go from here? i will ask after the break. don't go away.

credit card and have to pay of a conventional rates it would take 35 years. this is an enormous burden that replaced in the american people. it's something that we believe is already slowing growth in the united states. it could cost as up to a percentage point of growth. that is a million jobs in the current senate. some great irony. but against this convention, the beginning of the debt hitting 15 trillion. the end will be a jobs report will reflect all the trouble comes from having 16 trillion, and in between no one will talk about either. gerri: all breathlessly awaiting the jobs report. very interesting. one of the big headlines today from the dnc in charlotte, north carolina was the idea that they did not even put the debt clock up for people to look at. they're trying to avoid this, but is behind them. if you look at the debt overload , listed a look at the numbers. 2009, 10 trillion. 2010, 123. 2011, 14, now up to

$16 trillion. a growth. as you said to my people are something like $50,000. i want you to respond to something that obama had to say about this debt sometime ago. here is obama. >> the problem is is that the way bush has done it over the last eight years is to take out a credit card from the bank of china in the name of our children driving up our national debt from $5 trillion, the first 42 presidents, number 43 added $4 trillion by his lonesome. that's irresponsible. it's unpatriotic. gerri: irresponsible and unpatriotic. >> if for itsy that, what does five gets you? a predicted that the texas well over 20 trillion if we stay at his policies. so i'll tell you, it gives you bad economic performance and it gives you what the joint chiefs

of staff have called our biggest national security threat which is our international indebtedness. if the united states economy is not as strong as it has been in the past, we cannot protect our values around the globe, and we cannot negotiate with bankers. this gives us serious weaknesses on the economic and national-security front. the ultimate insult, we handed to the next generation that had no safe in the kinds of things we have seen go on and ask them to pick up the bill, and that seems like a gross injustice and mass. gerri: i want you to respond to something, david axelrod, the president's base of riser said about this and why the president is doing the right thing. here he is. >> the president's plan would do what the simpson bowles plan would do, cut the deficit by $4 trillion, reduce attack under our deficits down to 3 percent of the gross domestic product which is what everybody agrees we need to stabilize the debt. then we will be in a position to begin reducing it further.

gerri: what do you make of that. >> perfect except for a couple of flaws. we have not seen the growth and are not likely to get the kind of growth that they assume in those budget and rosy scenarios. such a good approach to solving our problems that they get exactly zero votes in the senate , zero votes in the house including the democrats. they're not a recipe for addressing what we need, and they're not -- simpson bowles is the result. the president ignored it. and lastly, the only way to solve this problem is to deal with the big spending programs, and the president has been silent about how to solve the problems in medicaid, the problems in the social security. he added a new entitlement with the affordable care act and rob medicare pay for it. this is not the kind of solution that is consistent with the words that his advisers use. gerri: always great to see you. thank you for coming out tonight. appreciate your time.

$16 trillion counting. that number, so hard to wrap your head around. in tonight's top five we will give you some perspective. here is what $16 trillion to buy you. this is the most expensive, and the country. take a look. the mansion in los angeles. $16 trillion. you could buy the some 128,000 times if you wanted to. number four, even though the program is no more, you could buy over 9400 space shuttles which according to nasa costs almost 2 billion each to make. number three, the most expensive american sports team in new york , just under $2 billion. you can buy them more than 80600 times. and number two, the biggest company in the world is apple with a market cap of about $6,302,000,000,000. you could buy 25 apples, 25 of those companies and have money left over. the number one thing you could buy with $16 trillion is europe. our national debt is larger than the combined economies of all of

are you better off than you were four years ago? here's what the president's supporters said to say this weekend. >> you want to know whether we are better off? i have a bumper sticker for you. general motors is alive. >> absolutely. clearly we are better off. >> does not the question of the selection. gerri: but it was only four years ago that the president himself made the argument for his own candidacy by asking the same question, what the voters were better off after eight years of president george w. bush. >> easy, you see, we democrats have very different measure of what constitutes progress in this country. we measure progress by how many people can find a job that pays the mortgage, whether you can put a little extra money away at the end of each month so that you can sunday watch your child received a college diploma. gerri: not right now. by his own measure you would have to agree, americans are not better off.

in fact, just today we got news, food stamp uses at the highest level ever -- ever in history. 46 million. a proportion of americans receiving some kind of federal government support is up, way up , 49 percent, up from 30% under ronald reagan. then there was this from the president's nomination speech back in 2008. >> we measure progress in a 22 million new jobs were created when bill clinton as president. [applause] when the average american family sides income go up $7,500 instead of down $2,000 like it has under george bush. gerri: 23 million jobs. it sounds like a pipe dream, right? president obama has not even come close to that. in fact, instead of expanding numbers of people working within 300,000 fewer americans are working and in 2009. what's more, middle-class incomes are down, way down.

when obamacare office the mean household income was 54 fallout to 549,803. by june 8 tumbled to 50,000 to more than $4,000 in lost real income. and drop even as gas and food prices have gone up by every measure of success that obama has laid out in his speech, his administration has failed. maybe that is why the president himself rated his performance in complete. to be sure the economy was weak when obama took office he should have been a natural inheritor of an economic boom. and with very little effort. more usual recoveries result in massive job gains, not jobless rate steichen 8% and economic growth of just under 2%. business operators are fearful, expansion and hiring of the back burner. the massive tax increase looms. the debate is not much the economy expands but whether it expands. better off, i don't think so. better off, really? no way. that is what i think.

how are they going to make their case tonight? >> they have this backdrop of the $60 trillion debt to be eclipsed today -- $16 trillion debt that we eclipsed today in the disturbing economic news. the unexpected decline in construction spending, almost a full percentage point in the latest month. the third down manufacturing week we have had in a row. and it does take a little bit of the rug from under them. the trend is killing their way. they're still going to argue that overall after seeing 29 straight months of job growth we are out of the worst of it. it is going to be a tough sell, but they're convinced that your comparison is going to run in their favor, but you're quite right that party leaders are divided over how to make that a closing argument. the governor was among those who said, well, you know, technically for years to my not better off, but if you're going to compare the bush years we're

better off. and that he came back later. obviously someone get to hear from the white house. no, we are better off. biden has said we are better off it comes on the heels of the personal surveys that show 52 percent of americans seemed to think things are getting worse, not better. up against the tide of public opinion and is running against them. they're convinced they could make a case that at least if you stick with the president and his policies you will be better off that if you take a chance on the republican policies that they argue got us into this mess. a tough sell, but they say their up to it. gerri: bring in the big guns, people like bill clinton to talk about this, but i'm wondering about the falling korea. have you scheduled a critical interview with the actress? >> we will have for, but i don't want to give that away. such as stateswoman. far be it for me to question her motivation. i am very confident that we will be speaking to her.

endorsements and the political world? >> first of all, i have never asked anybody to vote for a candid because they like the gallon brothers music. in fact, we get to a political event as the first a mistake. i really do. don't vote for this candid and whoever is, george bush, because you like our music. here is what the deal is. the election, as we know it right now is pretty much head-to-head, 5050. someone, they looked at the polls, and i guarantee you that people -- and on not being cynical. this is just what i believe is true. somebody in their management company said to make, you know, this guy may get coming you know, his hind and handed to him. the other side may win. if we think that they don't, you know, i believe the rats are leaving the sinking ship. that is what i feel. gerri: us talk about 20 steward because there was a lot of reaction, some good, some not so good.

gerri: the nation's debt topping the 16 chilean dollar mark. the u.s. is now spending money to cover egypt's debt. the administration getting set to write off a billion dollars of the $3 billion of to the u.s. on top of the nearly $5 billion loan currently being negotiated between the imf and egypt. here to break it all down, k. t. mcfarland, the former secretary of defense and fox news contributor. always great to have your. why should we bail these people out? >> well, we shouldn't. i am a big believer in foreign aid when we get something for it. it's a lot better. but in this case the muslim brotherhood, anti-american, anti-israeli. they don't like us. they're taking over all aspects of the egyptian government. why should we give them money to continue to do so? they are trying to move out of the united states or bit. for 40 years egypt has been

pro-american, and now we see increasing movement and steps and insinuations that they want to be friends with tehran. gerri: well, president boris you went to china first. did not come to us, did not go to a western nation. and then there are talking to ron. so, i mean, at the end of the day you have to wonder how this will work out. how do we know if any money we give them will be used in the way that -- >> well, the muslim brotherhood, anti-american. they now control the presidency, the parliament, the military, the intelligence service, the government, the local government , and increasingly the media. what they're doing, as their running out of food and fuel is handing out vouchers to their supporters. in fact, they are now in a position where they are increasingly broke. they're running on fumes. they don't have money. gerri: what happens when these people start getting hungry? >> that is the question. two years ago by the arabs from

happen? people did not have jobs. they went out in the streets, got rid of mubarak who, by the way, and 8 percent growth rate. now, people don't have today will do a lot worse than they did when it did not have jobs, so i think what they're going to see by the end of the year is increasing unrest. they're already bouncing checks. they're having problems importing we and food. by the end of the year they don't have the money for that. you see more unrest in increasing anti-americanism. the thing is, they are preoccupying the sinai peninsula between egypt and israel, the place that has been demilitarized for 40 years and kept the piece. if that goes you could see in the conflict. gerri: complete destabilization of the region and in some ways we would be playing into it by giving the money. gerri: that's about it. the 110 ask you about john kerry. famous trenton center on issues of national security with democrats right now. maybe replacing hillary clinton. and what do you make of that?

>> i think it is an interesting thing. he is trying not to be secretary of state. if you want someone who is liked and beloved in the south and in particular in the military, it's not john kerry. he was a vietnam war hero, came back to the united states. through his medals on the floor and disavow the vietnam war. now, he may or may not have been right about vietnam, but the point is, he decided the military when he did so. i think it's actually, if you're looking for a seventh of the military veterans, that is not necessarily the guy you're going to get votes from. gerri: this is what congressman jim cooper had to say. not the most effective advocate. massachusetts is great and wonderful, but if you want to do this out to have to have somebody speaks of a southern accent. it sounds about right. >> i think that makes sense. gerri: thank you for coming on. great to have you here. we always have to find topics to get you on the show because i love to have you. >> it's mutual. gerri: meanwhile, new developments in the store we told you about on friday.

a pentagon official says the former navy seal and saturn account of the way they killed contains classified information. he says the book reveals sensitive affirmation, but would not say what that was. the spokesman also says the author should have submitted the book to the pentagon before publication. his lawyer says he was not legally obligated to have the book screened. meanwhile, the admirals' said the book could provide enemies with dangerous insight into the navy seals operation. so far the pentagon has not taken steps to stop the bug from beings -- still to come, my "2 cents more" on the tooth fairy. that's right. a new identity death warning. how cyber cards are stealing money from your financial adviser and why you won't be getting a dime back. ♪

>> well, the way it works is that basically invade your e-mail and when they have coopted your e-mail they take it over. they then reviewed different communications have. there are looking specifically for communications that you may be having with people with whom you have financial dealings, financial advisers been one group. gerri: you're not talking about the financial advisers doing anything wrong. you're talking about criminals getting in the middle of the relationship and to saluting a money. >> yes. what they're trying to do is use your syntex, kind of the way you communicate with her adviser, get the flow, understand who they are, how you communicate with them and then use this in order to communicate with them as if there were you except have them direct the money to the accounts that are the criminals. gerri: how hard is it to compromise my e-mail. >> unfortunately is a lot easier than most people think. first of all, people have very simple passwords. they don't have strong pass words, which is alphanumeric and

symbols and lower and upper case and things like that. gerri: something that you can't remember and have to write on your desktop. gerri: they share passwords. and then once one gets compromise someone has accessed your life. the other thing is they get to you because they get the information through this. people look at a cell phone and say, this is a communication device. the truth is, it's a data storage device. they take this, they get in here they look around, they see what they need to see, they get into your computer. and. gerri: that is where the trouble starts. what do i do to make sure another victim? >> in a strong pass words. he the best security protocols and software on your cell phones and your computer and you need to set up a set of protocols with your financial adviser and say, i don't care. gerri: protocols? >> in the way that this is how we will do things. passenger and e-mail at to transfer money from year to year, make me talk to you.

communicate with me. force me to make this a 1-and-1 so that you have a better idea that it is really me. gerri: gerri: setup levels of verification. >> you can set of different levels of verification, at the end of the day because the ultimate guardian of the consumer is the consumer, you need to be part of any process that moves your money anywhere. gerri: at the end of the day should be communicating with my financial adviser by the telephone rather than the man? >> it is best to communicate by telephone, or you can set it up by sending an e-mail and saying, i would like you to wire the money here and call me, are going to call you. and then after the wire has gone, after the money has left your account just make sure you know where it went. that it went to the right place. gerri: the shocking thing the you say is that everybody will be a victim of identity theft at some point in their lives. gerri: here is a problem. without the permission of their about as right now plus all the social networking information, plus all of the data security

breaches that we have seen, it is inevitable that we are going to be victim's identity theft. will we really need to do is first limit our exposure as best we can. have monitoring practices or tools in place, including looking into your accounts every day, getting ratifications from financial restitutions that transactions have occurred in your name, the amount of the transaction and basically what it was and then have a damage control program in place. gerri: what is the first signal that your identity has been stolen? coming to make it happen to people and they don't know. gerri: first of all, because they have included account to cover an identity theft, if you see charges and your credit card account that are not yours, if money is missing from your bank account, if you file for a refund and the irs tells you already get the refund or they won't even let you file because someone else did, if you go to get a procedure in a medical facility. gerri: that led to figure out before the damage is done.
