years for veteran benefits. first, it has been si months since the massacre at sandy hook elementary school in newtown connecticut. today, victims were remembered and they open their hearts and wallets over $1500to help those victims and families. we have been followi what happeneded to that money. tonight over $10 million has still not been given out. nearly all of that it held by one charity particular. with us now is a okesman for the family. >> a very small percentage of it. they are still trying to figure out the best path forward for how to distribut the money.
11:02 pm
i represent a coalion of families going back to columbine and we are saying that that money was given by a very generous american public and it was intend to go to them. together we are stadingnd sayi that that is actly what should happen. here is wha happened. americans were very geneus. they gave him $15 million to many charities. t the biggest one, the one that has the lion's share was united way of western @%nnecticut. after the tragedy, that particular charity sat back and decided to create am kind of foundation to put this money in. they studied the issue, all of this going on over the last six months. that seems to me lie it's a lot of time to be waitg for this money to be distribudd. >> it certainly is. it is actually one of the longest distributions that we have seen.
11:03 pm
a lot of time the money is spent f to a separeorganization and the panels are put together the challenging part is that there are people who specialize in this veey painful process. those who know how to do this. the preumptntat is completely out of the depth and how to handle this kind of situation can figure this out on their own. the fact that they are not a failing themselvesare the lessons that have been learned by other communities that ve gone throu this. it is unfortunate. we are saying that we should bring in this to come in. boston has argued on t. >> let me just say that the folks in the bosto tredy, whh happened recently, they are already starting to get

those in attendance. they are seen as a coalition of victims, that the american public is responding with their hear in reaching out to the families. >> okay, i need you to respond to a couple of things. unfortunately they have put out mixed messages. first was hat they were going to get $4 millon of the $1 milli to the victims. and they retracted that an hing back and said, we were going to give 7 mlion tthe victimss when you ask the question of how did you come up with a number. what happens to the interest is being earn on that oey. what happens to the wave of giving that is going to happen right around six months timeframe. what will happen will probably flew into the community local happened at.
11:06 pm
gerri: now w are going to set up distribuon committee and there are 40 families inlved in this. there are $11 million. >> it is not quite that simple. the 40are divided into three cagories we have two who suffered physicainjury and survived. and we have 12 who were in the classrooms and escaped. there were different levels f injury. so you need to have someone who has experience in this. a victim compensation specialist who can come up with a formula on the degree of injury and how to parcel out and distribute the money. >> it is all really complicated. but you e sitting here six months later. thonly people w have seen this are th people running the
