gerri: forget college, that is what some students are saying. more of them going to

certificate programs for a faster and cheaper education. some getting bigger pchecks as a result. joining me now is a professor at georgetown university. welcome to the show. it is so great having here. just how popular are the certificate programs, and why are they becoming such a big thing? >> well, they are very flexible. muchmore prevalent than people realize. 18% have a certificate and they actually can be mbined with a higher education degree. you can get a two-year degree and even if people get a ba aba and then get a certificate. these are occupationally oriented programs that are really part of the specific job. gerri: one of the things that they don't see from the outset of this to it is finishing the program and getting placed in an appropriate job.

these programs tend to be specifically focused and we really don't get a lot of general skills. if you don't use those skills, just a little bit more than half get placed well. so if you don't do that, you don't get that much from this kind of traing. >> b1 are the institutions addressing those concerns? >> they are trying. things change. i mean, you know, we think they can do a better job of it. that they need t be put under pressure and there was a program of the deparent of labor called gainful employment that we a trying to evaluate eh program in each school to identify those programs of successful and the edcation and the placing of the students and that would be a way to get rid of those that are not fruitful. gerri: in the meantime, let's talk about what people are getting out of these programs.

will conserve areas are they studying so what are those jobs? >> obviously in the i.t. field. if you are an i.t. person you will make more than a lot of people with a ba degree. but the more certificates are kind of more manually oriented d airplane mechanics and so forth and so on. machines of different sorts. thenthere is office management. gerri: and kill,even though it is specific, that is not something that wilgoway. it seems seems like pretty good deal to me. that is the kind of thing that you want to do. particularly if it's what you dreamed of doing. >> really want to build on your own life and then he will be most happy. you can bring more joy to it and you will get better at it.

there are some dead-end careers out there. but most people have had some skillsnd they can find a niche for hemselves and, you know, have a good career. gerri: how muc do these cost? are they less expensive? >> less expense than a four year degree. so certificates run from thee months up to two years and they pay what they cost, it depends on where you go. have the certificates are in public community colleges and then it's very cheap. just a couple thousand dollars a year. but then another half is done by these private private for profit schools. >> yes, we will do another segment on that someday. i think the certificates are the price tag is sure attractive to a lot of people out there. weneed to leave it there, but thank you for coming on. you areso articulate on this topic and we appreciate it. >> i am glad to be here.
