>> "the washington post" calls in the anti--hris christie. as resolute as the other governors. they both get their share of protesters, but his governor tends to more than reflect him. seeming to really enjoy engaging in that. long before chris christie was proving a bull ia china shop, scott walker was hardly dismantling that the big guy talked tough and the other guy who is really not that

big actually dead. yet it was the unassuming guy who created a firestorm in the held back the recall effort and the moreamiliar chris christie who held an unusual coalition together. both purple state does the found a way to expand this among voting groups where they should and and among uni households, critics say that they wanted. one game to the other guys again. chris christie is moderate and in policy, but a moderate and temprament. walker is moderate and temperament, but moderate and policy and here's the difference. he might be the bigger guy nationally among media prognosticators, but it is scott walker who is was proving a more engaging figure to average republican voters who ultimately really do matter and that is why

thought you would want toake a closer look at the governor who you might be missing in the middle of all of this. making all the right moves among republicans and independents who are forever handicapping and wondering that maybe this is the guy you are missg who could bridge the gap between the teed off in the tea partiers. with me now, scott walker, who further distinguishes himself in an unusually thought-provoking reflection and his party book is called an ternational challenge. governor, welcome. >> it's great to be with you and thank you for having me on the show. >> what i love about the book

through these ordeals up close as it was all going on. e really do some soul-searching you go back and criticize yourself. particularly listening more and speaking less on paraphrasing that's not something you typically hear out of politicians. >> reqs. >> i wonder why you wrote it. >> well, this is not a typical politician's book either. it's about the story of what we did in wisconsin and one of the stories in the chapter that i should say in the book, talking abut how my wife said scott, why are you doing this and she said why are you pushing this and it dawned on me that even though i talk about these things before the campaign, we talked

about the contributions and i haven't really talked about it from the day after the campaign from the time that i pushed my reforms and i was so eager to fix it but i didn't bother talking about it and it was really one of those self reflection moments where my number one constituent wasn't fully embracing what i was doing and then i was just pushing things forward, and that was one of the turning points. neil: i could write -- i digress. in your case, governor, i have covered you over the years that your personal temperament, it doesn't seem to match the vilification that youet from the media. in other words, you almost think that you had a big personality like chris christie.

getting loud, so it just struck me as odd that you would gerate much more grief trying to rein in unions and get this sort of label going. you find that odd? >> ideal. it is interesting. and i love chris christie, he's a good friend of mine and i think he's a great governor in america. we have a very similar point of view that we speak out i have a midwestern filter and i think that they are ridiculous. so chris says you are an idiot, that's a stupid question. >> is a very big issue and could be if you ever choose to run for president. but you might havesomething that would be more suited in

your temperament with chris christie, but that might not fit well in states with that type of behavior that doesn't go well. >> mib, although when voters are hungry, our leaders who are authentic and tell people what they are going to do, chris christie might have a slightly different way of doing it than i do in wisconsin. but the reason why we are doing much better in washington is because you're actually telling people what we are doing, we have optimistic visions and we are talking out being relevant and we have the courage to act pon the conviction and it's why last year, we point this out in the book, i had one out of six voters in my state voting for me

and ideologically it doesn't make any sense. neil: may be in your low-key way, it's not that you're being a target. a lot o conservative groups have supported you appear to be a part o the government to isolate this and find out who they knew and what they knew and it's pretty intimidating stuff. to what do you make of that? >> there is no doubt about it. it seems to be almost all the time and in the end we are not intimidated. i cabinet, my kids, everything. >> all of these groups, dozens of them have supported you in your recall effort and have been

subpoenaed by special prosecutors and this is important. >> we have seen time and time again, intends ttry to intimidate people and the good news about what i said, we withstood the pressure and ended up paying off because people saw that the reform work and we were continuing to turn it around and that is what i wanted to share this story with people all across the area. >> i think the bigger problem is that it appears with this and many other issues that he relied almost solely not on the policy team and think either way it is bd and the way he knew and didn't tell us or he didn't know

and the thing would be the legacy for his and he certainly should. in eithecase, i think that is a huge indictment on this admistration to put people ahead of the politics. neil: regardless of your own intentions are looking at reelection next year, senators, congressmen, maybe they'll limitation of that, you need the executive experience of the governor in that ffice. >> yes, when i was asked about it, i said without a doubt it would be the current or former governor and if i could magically do that, i put two governors on the tiket. particularly replicans will go up against hillary clinton. >> would chris christie be her

running mate? >> i think there's pretty good options out there right now, as well as a couple of former governors, people thought it was a little unconventional, but it kind of symbolized that it was time to turn it over to the next generation and we had two younger candidates that was very appealing. neil: one was a governor and one was a senator. >> welcome i think the narrative is going to be hillary clinton and she is a product of washington and i think to put any republican governor up either current or former provides a sharp contrast and that is why there are a few exceptions. there are very few in washington and typically would be people here in the states. chris christie, bobby jndal, all of them.

>> i apologize, but you need someone who bridges that gap between ted cruz and the others and what they are calng traditional republins with broad appeal with governor chris christie and bobby jindal. you are closer to the average than they are. >> we ar thankful bring that together in 2010 and i'm hopeful he will be with me in 2014. i think there's a number of governors like that. we have to govern and we have tt be optimistic that we are doing all this. that is why i say turning to the states is what we need to do and where we need to go. because we are bridging those gaps together and showing that republicans can be firm and conservative and could ultimately chariot to the center and win.

>> is a little bit of soul-searching. admitting yowere wrong. but it's something that don't always see it. it might be a subliminal mesage. >> i think there are a number of lessons and there are those that talk about austerity i not the answer and reform is and we really are trying to have a focus with eal people in politics. we expect our candidates to do things exactly right and i think in many cases we are not compromising byny means and that means being a firm conservative across the board. learn from others in our state about better ways to communicate and better ways to weed and that is something that we need to do nationally as well.

that is going to be negative. >> do you think the dollar amount will still be roughly the same? or do you think that people wil conserve and hold back on this? >> i think that when you look at the economy, people make decisions based upon two things, how they feel now and what is it going to be in the future. th averageconsumer, they now know that sed on obama cat, they may or may not have insurance and halth care costs will have insurance and if so, it will cost twice as much. those factors is going to be a negative for the economy in the fourth quarter.

neil: following all that stuff more closely than even me. so i've always said that this health care law needs some sudden magic. but i could not stay magic johnson.

>> ithink that the self-imposed deadline, if it's not operating effectively, it will be tremendous problems. he can make sure that this gets done. it's not an excuse to say that i didn't know. he needs to be on top of it. >> it seems to bend pat of this, but i actually believe that. >> there's only one of two options. but it is his signature legislation. to make sure that it gets executed as good as possible. so he's not paying attention.

neil: the irs, how many times are they under fire? that is making hackers very happy. because they are the ones who are trying to get into this health care law and if ended the irs isn't doing what it said, dan mitchell says that that is hat makes a bad situation worse. explain. >> thereare two issues that we need to look at. one of the fact that government generally doesn't do things very effectively or competently. or you are looking at the obamacare exchange order waste and the pentagon. no bottom line, thingsget sloppy. you have fundamentally bad laws they put a requirement on a

database and fear an accurate statement statement and are they getting better? i don't really want to put the blame on the irs or the obamacare exchanges. it is the law, the law that says government should have as much information about its a we know that that information is valuable to hackers and identity thieves and it is so simple and we wouldn't need all of these requirements. so even if we had angels heading this up, you'rprobably not going to have it do very well by the nature of government and the underlying policies that create such a perfect storm for the threat to our privacy. neil: we just had some ladies debating the impact of all of this. both liberals and conservatives -aying that this is fixed and

done. if it looks like it's not, then why? >> i think that they are looking at a very rough. lack of time. the fipside is a republicans capableof that and they have to propose serious structural reforms to the underlying bad laws and it doesn't mean taking this from the edge is. you have to actually reduce the scope of the federa government. including the integrity of data and taxpayers and that is why you can'tust make it solve the problem. you have to reduce government. >> i readily agree with you. it is really thinking abut the
