misleading promotion we want it so easy to get suckered. i have to tell you that i just, i'm really trepidations about this. one of the things that you say that you need to do this time of year is read the return policy. >> that is right. you never know if there's a restricteddpolicy, especially with electronics and gadgets and stores will charge you restocking fees. they are going to be deals throughout the whole season. gerri: so much money to put back on the shelf. okay, what about other deals? >> they may not have all of the bells and whistles and features that you expect them to have. so for instance an hp laptop it, maybe good for checking your facebook, but if your college student, get something better. gerri: there is stuff out there
6:03 pm
that is super discounted and designed for black friday season, but you may not want it. what phone do you like? >> you can find coupons for hundreds of different stories. there is a coupon for an extra 15% through coupon sherpa and if there's something that you are dying to have, get a deep discount. gerri: it's amazing to me. it's like an art form. >> it really is. it is mind-boggling and overwhelming and that is why, you know, pick a couple of stories and deals and limit yourself to. gerri: i like that. price matching. you tell me. okay, black friday and saturday and cybermonday. but what about the weekend before christmas? will it be off the charts? >> there are really good deals, retailers need to move the merchandise it hasn't sold and you will see much bigger
6:04 pm
bargains and there's even free shipping on december 18. retailers are offering with no minimum. on top of whatever is discounted. is there something you'd only for the holidays, shop after christmas. gerri: okay, items that you really think are discounted at a good deal. let's start with this samsung hdtv, 65 inches. >> that's right, big screen, marked down $500. and that is what i tried to push. go for the electronics that you know are good products. gerri: let's talk about the nikon cool pix. >> that is also a good deal. look at the savings. you are saving $1300 on this great product.
6:05 pm
sometimes black friday is good to pick up items that you need for your home. gerri: what about the apple ipod mini? >> i love this one. gift card for you can get from target and wal-mart that you can use for other purchases with the purchase of this ipad mini. don't buy stuff you didn't need. gerri: you definitely need a shopping list. [laughter] >> absolutely, shop online if you can't enjoy yourself. gerri: thank you for coming on the show. so will consumers shop until they drop? inside into how willing people are to open their wallets. peter barnes has the latest. reporter: that's rightt a new consumer survey says that more people will spend more money on their holiday shopping this year
6:06 pm
but it might've been higher had it not been for the fiscal battles in washington, which made some shoppers cautious this holiday season. the consumer federation of america hold more than 1000 consumers for their annual holiday shopping survey. 15% said that they plan to increase holiday spending this year, a slight increase over this 12% rise last year, which was up from 8% who said they spent more in 2011. 32% say they plan to spend less this year from 30% who said that last year and they are going to spend about the same. but the survey suggested that the increase in the number of consumer spending, spending more this holiday season, it slowed because of washington's fights over spending and the debt ceiling. 51% of those polled said that the battles had affected their holiday spending.
6:07 pm
>> the responses to the questions about the budget battles suggest that this created or increased the sense of economic insecurity by some americans economic insecurity that tends to depress consumer spending. reporter: the group's forecast for holiday spending overall was a rise of 3.5 to 4% and slightly better than the average for the annual increases over the last decade. gerri: peter, thank you for that. have a great thanksgiving. well, storms are barreling into the northeast and mid-atlantic. travelers are finding it difficult to get where they are going. more than 235 have been canceled according to fly aware.com. most of those have been out of new jersey and new york and philadelphia and some flyers were held on the tarmac for two

hours this morning. can you imagine? as a result, airlines are using their best resources but losing an hour or more. michael berry from the insurance information institute is going to join us now. so let talk about this. we have ignored the fact that most folks drive instead of fly to their destination. what is your advice for them as they head out tonight, maybe in the dark or bad weather? >> these are the good old days for people who don't know where they are going to need to find a good route to go. there's google maps, weather underground, you can also look at the weather channel, they have an interstate planner. gerri: lots of places to consult. you can also do a lot with google maps. you can find out which roads are passable and which are not so
6:09 pm
passable, in the green and in the red. traffic, weather, whatever the hangup is, if you're taking a long road trip and are on the east coast, you really have to do some research before walking out the door. >> most definitely. your weather is right along interstate 95 going from florida to maine. aaa estimating 39 drivers out on the road, so you have these 39 million drivers. and what are the big causes of fatal accidents and the two top ones are preventable. one is speeding and secondly is driving while intoxicated or under the influence. to preventable causes of fatal accidents and as long as people keep that in mind, they should have a safe trip. gerri: you are from the insurance information institute.
6:10 pm
so you know this. so many people are going to have the pedal to the metal because they are concerned about getting there on time. are there any mobile applications of folks should use to figure out what is going on? >> yes, google maps, weather underground is looking into the weather channel, if you're in a pinch, you if you have an iphone, you can always consult the best route. >> okay, one of the big things that i think will happen this year that will be different, and i'm sure the you're watching this as well. we will have so many flight cancellations and people will be getting a car after having a disturbing experience at the airport. >> that is a great point. the thing to keep in mind is that if you look at the stats of the insurance information, the commercial aviation has an amazingly great track record in terms of safety for millions of miles and yet, people think that

gerri: red-hot controversy continues over, and corps. that is the curriculum of the common standards designed to raise it in achievement. it has been adopted by 45 states. but more and more states now, even ones that were on board initially, thinking of the windows implementation of the concerns grow over what some are calling a one-size-fits-all education system. here is the georgetown director and michael mcshane, a fellow at the american enterprise institute and coeditor of common core made education reform and what it means for politics and policy and the future of schooling. welcome to you both. before we get started, i have gotten more tweets from viewers
6:16 pm
on this topic. people are so passionate about this. i want to start with you. both of you have concerns about common core. it's a mystery, but what are your concerns? >> my real concern is more about the debate than the standards themselves. i think that what we are seeing is the beginning of a fairly difficult. matt for the common core standards, largely to do with the fact that they can't seem to get things done. so the common core standards are definitely important, but i think largely there are reasons to be concerned and i think the more compelling story is why can we get them done. gerri: that's right, they are not always blended initiatives that are okay by you. >> my primary concern is how much these standards are
6:17 pm
intertwined with all the other things that we're trying to do. so this includes teacher evaluation, school policies, school choice, not being able to successfully integrate these standards and know that they could have serious consequences. gerri: that sound so complicated. most people think that the federal government is too involved in that, or they don't like the amount of privacy issues surrounding it. they don't like the idea that there's all this information about their kids floating around. >> in the end the standards are largely aspirational and are the hopes that we have for our children and grandchildren largely about their achievement in math and reading. so in the end, it's really up to the state in the community and the parents and the children to decide how to meet them and that will probably sound fairly complicated. each state will decide how to do it.
6:18 pm
gerri: people don't feel like it's being locally implemented, but coming down from washington on their heads and they do not like that. what do you say? >> i think it should be clear that from the outset, it was a state led initiative and however, over the course of the last several years, the obama administration and the department of education has said it's him on advocating on the race to the top, the competitive grant programs, president obama made it an issue in 2012, talking about it in the state of the union and people have justifiable fears that the federal government is intruding and this is something that i agree with. that should be left up to states and localities. gerri: people on the left don't like it either. and there are people in the center that have concerns. i've heard teachers say that they don't like it because they feel like things are being forced on them. why is this such a controversial
6:19 pm
and difficult topic in your view? >> i think that we are in a period in american history where everything that we talk about kids, in a sense, gets turned into a rudimentary debate over political philosophy, and we don't pay much attention to the details. i recognize that there are problems here. but the issue is, do we go forward with education? >> well, is it just the left and the right battling it out or are there real issues they are? >> there are real issues and actually, what might be even more interesting about the debate that is occurring is that the intraparty differences are as pronounced as the interparty differences. there are republicans debating republicans and jeb bush proposed it. gerri: this is a jeb bush initiative. we have some republicans and conservatives that don't even like it.
6:20 pm
>> absolutely. >> is a look at us this going forward, where is this all going. they don't want to do this despite the fact that they get money for implementing these standards. >> i think what we have here is the government in full retreat intervening in the k-12 education with the no child left behind and now the governmentt the federal government is pulling away and saying that you take this football and that is what this common core is is a voluntary state led initiative in the politics are state politics, which i would agree with. >> i feel like this was all cooked up in a high-level executive suite with bill gates and folks who thought that they knew what was best for all of us. i have big questions about
6:21 pm
whether it really meets the needs of individual students. but i'm still reading about this. and you've written a book on it. what you say? >> i think there is something that could happen that would be very helpful for everyone. when the house republicans were drafting their bill to reauthorize elementary and secondary education, they included this really clear decisive language saying that the federal government would not play a role in advocating for a particular set of standards or curriculums and what not, you know, make future regulatory relief for grants based upon the adoption of the standards and i think that if we want to quell from these legitimate concerns, folks on the left and right could come together to sort of advance that language and keep the federal government out of this initiative. gerri: that's a dream. i'd love to see that happen. thank you both for coming on. a great talk and i appreciate your time. >> happy thanksgiving.
