a troop surge in afghanistan, president obama was skeptical if not outright convinced that it would fail. and this continues the writing that i never doubted obama's support for the troops, only his support for the mission. and press secretary jay carney today and they said when asked by the president if we would send our troops into harms way without believingn the mission. jay carney would not answer directly whether or not the claim is true. while seeming to hold that bill gates himself responsible for the final decision. >> you would not make decisions surging u.s. troops without a thorough debate of the policy objectives in the options available to achieve those objectives and a third debate of the proper focus of the mission and what it ought to be. that produced a policy as others

have said and secretary gates was one the co-authors, if you will who did just that. lou: witnessing a shocking conversation between hillary clinton and the president. the two former senators allegedly admitting that their oppositions while in the senatee were strictly for political reasons. jay carney brushed it off when he said that the president was opposed to the entire war. and vice president joe biden was a target of sharp criticism. he wrote that joe biden has been wrong on nearly every major foreign-licy and national security issue over thefour dec. while he accused the vice president of poisoning the well against pentagon leaders. d finally rushing to biden's defense, and didn't offer a single concrete example to refute the obligations.

>> i would reiterate that the president and the rest of us here disagree with that assessment. as a senor and a vic president joe biden has been one of the leading statesmen of his kind and he has played a key role in every major national security and foreign policy debate and policy discussion in this administration and in this white house. >> the president opening his weekly lunch meeting with bite into the press, and when asked when that is simply coincidence in light of the bill gates charges, jay carney told the press corps you decide for yourself. and on capitol hill the top democrat in thh senate, majority leader harry reid working overtime to extend the long-term unemployment benefits for three months. six republicans voted with democrats to debate this and

most of those republicans say that they won't vote for the final passage later this week unless lawmakers find a way to pay for it. among those republicans, kelly ayotte who says the extension should be paid for by not allowing illegal immigrants to defraud the federal government by claiming what is called the additional child tax credit. >> the joint tax committee has estimated that we can save close to $20 billion over 10 years by fixing this in our tax code. and so in addition to this issue, w can also pay for the unemployment insurance in the three-month extension that is on the floor right now. lou: majority leader harry reid slammed the proposal, saying that we could pay for jobless benefits by delaying the

obamacare individual mandate. >> so far all have heard from republicans is this. take a big whack out of obamacare. were they have another one. go after children with the child tax credit. >> the senate majity leader meant adults who defraud the federal government fraudulently claiming that those tax credits or likeness. there is still no word on how senator harry reid would move forward or whether he would allow votes on those amendments. and governor chris christie has a political crisis tonight exploding in new jersey. you e-mails have emerged showing chris christie staff engaged in a shocking case of petty political retribution which governor chris christie had denied on a number of occasions. private messengers between the

deputy chief of staff and the top transportation officials revealed they conspired to close the lanes of the george washington bridge back in september in order to create gridlock in the nearby town whose mayor didn't support this year's reelection. a senior staffer wrote that it was time for some traffic problems in fort lee. to which the transportation officials responded that you've got it. and on the week the lane closures, an unidentified person texted a transportation officials saying that i feel badly about the kids. apparently a reference to schoolbuses caught in the traffic jam. and the chris christie official replied then that they are the children of the voters, referencing the democratic opponent last year. and chris christie is a likely 2016 presidential nomination

candidate has denied that his staff played a role in the lane closures. last month the governor mocked reporters for even asking about the matter. and after canceling his public schedule, his office put out a statement, denying knowledge of the entire matter, claiming to have been misled by a staffer. and u.s. officials told "the washington post" that a former inmate of guantánamo bay is now a suspect in the september 11 terrorist attack and then got the. the former detainee who was released from guantánamo bay in 2007 reportedly trained at one of osama bin laden's camps and now says that the state department is expected to have formed a terrorist organization and the new allegations claims that "e new york times" say that al qaeda was not involved

on much of the country. temperatures remain in the single digits but are expected to rise dramatically by the end of the week and could top 50 degrees by saturday in the northeastern part of the country. re than two thirds of the country affected and the economy estimates to have suffered some $5 million in damages as a result of the pola vortex and americans are unable to drive to work or take business trips and vacations, spending more time during this time to heat their homes and money. 90% of the 160 million homes are expected to pay more for heat this winter. the energy information estimate thecost increase to be about $300 on average as a result of this spike, if you could use that expression and talking about cold weather. on wall street today, 16-point

residents into the crash prone deeplytroubled federal website healthcare.gov. martin o'malley had initially opposed that idea but so far only 18,000 residents have signed up and that is five short of maryland's 150,000 enrollment targets by the end of march. and speaker john boehner telling house republicans today that the leadership would soon release an outline of the position on immigration legislation. a lot of people thought that the judiciary committee had argued on that. our next guest is a member of the judiciary committee which is headed by congressman bob good law. he has also passed the act to bring american farmers some relief with a workable agricultural proram.

is best for our fellow citizens as well. it is not going to be about winning 2014. it's not going to be about appealing to certain groups that haven't historically been too fond with the republican rty. we are going todo what we think is best for the country. so if they want to memorialize it and put it in writing,. lou: there is a public enthusiasm and the republican congress, for succeeding in actually taking the lead on resolving the issue of immigration in this country. the president couldn't do it and the house is now having about and having succeeded at doig so. >> eskimo we've even when they do this they didn't lift a finger with immigration reform

and we actually had a meeting today. i met with about 20 of my colleagues. many of them on different committees. we are all very encouraged, as you would expect with any big group. there is still a debate within the republican conference on a path to citizenship versus legal status. there's a debate on what the background check should look like. i would prefer a tougher background check. but what happened, and this is what else is imrtant. six months ago everyone in the world was telling john boehner do you have to bring the senate bill to the florida house and if you don't they are going to run you out of town. now only "the new york times" still like the senate bill and you don't hear anyone talking about this, including people who helped coauthored senate bill. lou: you are of course exactly correct. one of the leading lobbyists and

the highest paid and most effective individuals is routing around all over capitol hill trying to get amnesty done. and he leaves a pretty strong impression that he's being paid to achieve. do you think you won't succeed in convincing the house adership to create amnesty and embrace in an underhanded way of the capital's pillars, a dl that approximates the g-8 proposal? >> there other groups. they are groups that i respect, faith-based groups and those that are still talking about amnesty. howell that depends on is how you define it. but there are folks that have really thick suthern accents. one of them is named haley.

so i don't think speaker boehner is terribly concerned about what is former chair of things. there is no appetite among my colleagues in the house. lou: that is reassuring particularly coming from you. so let's turn now, if we may, to the president. he is talking about unemployment insurance and we have a vote in the senate. would you be willing to extend unemployment insurance for about a million and a half americans who are about to lose the insurance, given the dreadful performance of this administration and creating jobs and getting this economy going again? >> my friend john thune said that it was the 13 13th time that we have extended the temporary unemployment benefits system. we were wondering at what point

do you just -- when you accept and appreciate the fat that treating the symptoms isn't working and you have to address the underlying pathology. we pass this skills act, which will retrain workers who can get a vote in the senate. i have no interest in punishing those because this president can't find it. but by the same token, even some liberal economist can see that after a wild, you have to stop it. and it's been more than a while. so we are going to need to pay for this and i'm going to need some idea that we are going to reform this and it's not going to become an entitlement program. because we can't afford the other four that we have right now. >> it's difficult to keep the illusion and those economists will be running for election in november. you get the last word here.

not be too enthusiastic about the chamber's spending $5million to knock out the two-party and those that have the temerity to rest donahue? good lord. can do show exercise? >> it goes back in time when the chamber opposed proposition 13 but they unanimously opposed. the chamber is not invincible always correct organization. anytime donahue was completely correct to go after the democrats for policies i think the two-party made the republican party a better place and i agree there are tea party candidates that probably cost us a few senate seats if not more but all in all we ha a deficit problem. a tax problem the spending

problem in exchange rate problems and regulati problem. the two-party is focused on all of those. of i'd like as juicy a night for lobate flat tax nominee, a free trade, the double regulation that t at a the way and let the private sector solve the problem. lou: blood and it be nice? if the republican party could do more than just represent the chamber of commerce to embrace of middle-class and for those that are -- that aspire and for those interests to articulate why they are so important to. and may be understood and the economics of extending the unemployed the benefit can be rationalized by conservatives just to stop

christie ised a statement today like -- it did not sound good. what if he had the federal power? what about the irs? he denies and i don't know the truth but it is a little scary. i hope if runs for president as a republican he has learned his lesson he cannot do this brass knuckles stuff because it would scare the the jesus out of a lot of people including the republicans he would need to support him. lou: the new york times takes this president to task for having an extraordinarily egregious and transparent to administration even though he promised it.
