gerri: more news continues to unfold with a massive data breach with target, neiman-marcus and three other well-known retailers who presumably will announce that they were breached as well. the national retail federation calling for high end credit-card security. our next guest is by phone and the editor in chief of american banker. more attacks. are you surprised? >> not really. they have been going on for years but what is surprising people right now is the size. with target may be as many as 110 million people of course, when people fear their other retailers but we don't know who yet they start to get very nervous. i heard the house democrats are asking for an

investigation or some sort of hearing. melissa: i am sure they will do a fine job. gerri: the people money to get on the case are the retailers and the banks. food needs to fix this problem? >> it is so easy to clone the cards with the signature and magnetic stripe if there is a decent interim solution was chipping and in technology going from their retailers through their credit card processor -- processing companies through mastercard or american express. it is not easy but if they make these changes we would get rid of these problems. gerri: there is the big debate first of all, but if the europeans can do smart cards why can't we? how much would it cost? >> nobody knows the cost but the problem we have is the people to pick up the cost are not necessarily the ones to pick up the cost from

fraud. the banks have to pay for some of the fraud losses but mastercard and visa have a lot of influence on the networking and security in the bank's. the retailers say you need to make the cards ironclad and the banks say if we don't pick up the cost then we don't have skidded the games. gerri: the banks are sitting back maybe we will play or maybe not. the national retail federation today was insistent on an improvement because they know the credibility of their industry is at stake. people were staying home from target to sale of my shop there. >> estating i will not shot there. >> with the chip and can i know it is not perfect france has had it since 1982 the u.k. started 2004

and let's talk about the economic engine behind us. our earnings are holding up. you think consumers are going to get back in the saddle and spend? to i do think that the earnings are holding out. even though they have been somewhat anemic. but you asked the question are consumers going to spend. and i think that we will see some continued improvement there as well. and that should help the economic factor. gerri: david, do you agree? >> i think earnings are in a dangerous spot. when we look at price-earnings and multiples of 15, over 17 and if you're doing database accounting which puts back in those one-time items, you have a

price earnings of over 23 if you are a value investor and that will be sorted out the outer edge and i think we will go along with his support this overvalued at these levels. gerri: okay, larry, do you agree? >> i do kind of sort of agree. and the earnings season is coming out and it's not going to be great to stay in the market but i do believe. gerri: financials and big banks. we have been talking about and

also -- consumers are more knowledgeable with a group of consumers that are part of the network. but again in moderation what we are telling consumers as well. gerri: i'm hoping that this is true but i bet it's not. i'm hoping there's a health benefit eating butter. because i don't eat margarine. so are there benefits? >> well, you have the trans fat and saturated fat and consumers know that butter can be part of a very healthy diet. and i think that we think it was moving away from foods that are better for men and the administration is also looking to update this going forward.
