or irritation where applied, increased red blood cell count, headache, diarea, vomiting, and increase in ps ask your doctor about axiron. gerri: hello, everybody, i'm gerri willis. right now on "the willis report", a "willis report" special investigation. obamacare applications rejected. is the government sending back an unusually high volume of health insurance applications and still counting those folks as enrolled? also, the fda wants to change how we buy over-the-counter drugs, important new information you need to know. and, need a special tool or machine when working around the house? we answer the age-old question, do you buy it or rent it? we're watching out for you tonight on "the willis report."
5:01 pm
gerri: is obamacare limbo and insurance agent in north carolina tells us an unusually high volume of his obamacare applications are being sent back to him. applications that still appear to be part of the overall obama care enrollment numbers but have yet to be officially approved and people applying for health insurance, they're in limbo. with us now that insurance agent, dennis hill. joining us paul howard from the manhattan institute. dennis, thanks for coming on the show tonight. at what rate are you seeing applications returned to you? >> well, we're getting a pretty good rate now that, about 40%. we're doing a good many applications each week and seem to be getting works lately. gerri: dennis, that is about two in five of the applications you're getting are coming back to you and you're a broker with
5:02 pm
some 16 years worth of experience. you've been around for a while. you know how to do this business. what do you think is going on? why are they getting rejected? >> we're still having problems with the website. it has gotten better than it was. we're still having lots of problems. too many things trying to go within that system one time trying to verify information and just making a mess of everything. gerri: i want to show folks one of the questions you got back from the website. it was obamacare applicction that was returned to you. the person was told, you need to send the marketplace proof you're a citizen, and yet, this person was a social security recipient. shouldn't they have known? >> yeah, we're having problems like that. they also should know that what income they make, if they're drawing social security they should have that information and sometimes they're wanting both proof of citizenship and proof of income which is really crazy. what we're trying to do to get them enrolled, it is difficult to do our job because of all the things they're asking us so do
5:03 pm
after the fact. gerri: i want to bring in paul howard here from the manhattan institute. paul, you've seen everything with obamacare. you've seen all kinds of glitches and all kinds of fundamental problems. is this surprising to you? >> these were the problems that were supposed to be cleared up in november. the government is supposed to check your income and citizenship linked them through the federal data hub. on the other hand if he gets higher rejection rate means the process has not been fixed. if this is widespread occurrence they're claiming enrollments not really completed yet. gerri: that is the heart of the matter, right, dennis? that is one of your big questions? are people being counted and this accounts for the big numbers administration is touting? what do you think? is this isolated case or is this happening all over the country? >> this is happening all over the country. the state i'm in north carolina, we don't have a state exchange. we have to go through the federal exchange. it gets bogged down and getting
5:04 pm
people through and subsidy things like that. if they don't get this information back to them what we found out this past week is that the peeple we started back with in october and november and december, they're going to be terminated within 90 days if they don't get this information to them, even though they think they have coverage they will not have it. gerri: wow, that is horrible position to be in. i should make clear here we tried to contact health and human services to ask them about these questions. we heard no response or answer from them. i want to give another example, dennis, here, what you have seen. this is obamacare application rejected. the person was told, you need to send the marketplace proof of yearly income for 2014. this person was self-employed as a farmer. shouldn't they know from irs documents how much this guy was making? >> well, the way the program asks it, asks if your income in 2014 will be the same as 2012. and almost nine out of 10 that is not going to be the same because something changed one way or the other.
5:05 pm
particularly if you're a farmer, you have no idea what your income is going to be because of what the climate is going to be like. he just has to go by what he thinks it is going to be. if it is not right, they're telling him he will be terminated. >> that is the problem here. so what they're going to do is check against last filed return. in this case it is 2012. if it is not expected, 10% earnings, they will come back to ask more information. if you have people in his group who have fluctuating incomes from year to year that is going to get flagged. >> another flag here, you have to send the marketplace proof you're a citizen, what about that? surely the federal government knows if you're a citizen or not? >> they should talk to the department much homeland security and other agencies that is citizenship. that is one of the core obligations. gerri: why are they asking this independent broker out there to send proof, that doesn't make sense? >> doesn't make a lot of sense. if these were applications completed in back in october and november, having the most problems on the website could be
5:06 pm
they're circling around to fix these and got lost in the flood. >> we're still having problems. gerri: go right ahead. >> i'm sorry. we're still having the problem. we did have that problem back in october and november and basically just quit during those months and waited on december to start back again. but we're still, this is february now and we're taking applications for april and the same thing is happening. so it has not been fixed. some of the things have been fixed but not nearly working -- they need to post this thing for another year and start all over. gerri: dennis, i have to tell you. you have a bird's-eye view. you're in the marketplace. doing the work. seeing it first-handd not relying on numbers from the government. see what is happening with the applications every single day. if the failure rid of these applications is something like 40%, two in five, are not getting through what does that tell you about the millions and millions of people that the government claims they have enrolled? >> well, that tells me that the numbers are wrong and one of the things is, that they think
5:07 pm
they're enrolled and information is not getting to the insurance companies and not getting billed properly and getting notices if you don't pay this premium i will be terminated. they haven't even got a bill so start with. all kinds of things on top of each other. gerri: last word, paul? >> clearly still experiencing serious difficulties. we'll not have a real picture what is happening until march 31st until open enrollment period ends. government could be make much better effort to be transparent on exchanges. they tell us what they think they want us to know. gerri: is not acceptable to say we'll not have information until the end of march. we're paying for this program every single day and now people will go out into the marketplace think they have coverage and will not have any help. >> or show up in a doctor's office and have no coverage. gerri: absolutely right, paul. dennis, thanks for ee-mailing. you contacted us. thanks for coming on the show. stay in touch. if you find something else we should know about, please let us know. >> thank you for all you do. i appreciate the obamacare
5:08 pm
information you've been sharing with your consume years thank you so much. now we want to know what you think. here's our question tonight. are the obamacare sign-up numbers, are they inflateed? log on to gerriwillis.com and vote on the right-hand side of the screen. i will share results at the end of tonight's show. there is more and more going on. gas pages surging last two weeks more than a dime a gallon. a couple factors behind the rise. we have phil flynn from price futures group. >> thanks, gerri. gerri: what is going on? why is gas prices going up? >> it is everything. you have got a cold winter. first time in a long time we have geopolitical risk breaking out all over the globe. ukraine, south sudan and libya and closer to home in venezuela. this comes at a worst time, gerri. right now refiners go into maintenance to get ready for the upcoming summertime driving season. we're still feeling effects from the cold weather.
5:09 pm
it's a delicate balance. oil prices are going up and driving up the entire complex. gerri: we're seeing 12%, or 12%, 12-cent gain to 3.41 a gallon. that hits families hard. >> yeah. gerri: for a family, yes, this is something i will pay for this, no, i won't. you have to buy gas to get to work, to get kids to school. to do everything you ever to do. >> right. gerri: so what is your outlook here for gas in particular? is it hit by international issues like what is going on in venezuela? we're just showing pictures. >> it is. if you look what is happening in venezuela, even though we are importing the least amount of oil and gasoline components since 1985, it is still playing a part..3 because we really depend on, not so much on that oil but to keep the system moving smoothly. @hen you have these type of disruptions, it impacts everything. it really, if you look at the entire global where, goes to, whether it is going to china or the united states, anything
5:10 pm
around the globe that gets out of whack has to be placed from somewhere else and you feel that effect like dominoes going across the globe and that's what we're seeing. and even what we're seeing in the ukraine in recent weeks had a major impact on the price of oil because there's a lot of concern how russia is going to react, you know, to this change in government. we know in the past that they have cut off supplies of natural gas gas to the ukraine. that supply, 38% of that goes to europe f europe get that is supply cutoff because they're upset with ukraine not paying their bills, that means they will have to replace it with oil, coal and other things. so that is driving up the price. you have libya which has been a nightmare, on again, off again with production. gerri: right. >> a civil war in the sudan. playing into the price wars. gerri: it's a global marketplace. >> it is. gerri: obviously i want to ask you more about nat-gas. it is coming off a five-year high here. what do you see as an out look? i have to tell you, i thought
5:11 pm
prices would go down forever with all the fracking going on in this country and i'm in the northeast and the prices are going up. >> they're going up. a lot of people thought what you were did. they were in denial. the last five winters have been normal warmer than normal. this non-heat related demand. i was warning people, watch out if we get a cold winter this thing will run. this could get as high as $7 by 2015. what happened, people were lulled into false sense of security. they assumed producers could ramp up production to meet demand. there are oversupplies burning off. this was a wake-up call. mother nature is saying we have to invest more in infrastructure. get keystone pipeline going. get the natural gas pipelines going. why is new york importing, bringing natural gas from the gulf coast when they're sitting next to the biggest shale reserves in the world? doesn't make sense. so we've got to spend money on infrastructure. this was a wake-up call.
5:12 pm
and if we don't we are going to see more price spikes like this in the future. gerri: couldn't agree more, phil. thanks for coming on. one of the smartest guys i know about energy. >> thank you. gerri: appreciate your time. >> thank you, gerri, you're awesome. gerri: thank you. a lot more to come this hour including netflix cutting a deal with comcast and a deal with at&t. what does it mean for your bill? the major security flaw lurking in your apple products. i kid you not. what you need to know to protect yourself from hackers coming up. online, is that it doesn't go directly from netflix to comcast. it goes from netflix is what is called in the industry, computer industry, tech industry have a lost acronyms, right, it is called cvns. it goes to a cdn and goes directly to comcast. so what happens is that netflix was getting bogged down by that cdn. a company by the name of cogent. they said listen we'll go direct to comcast. gerri: let's cut to the chase here. i think everybody, trying to get, you know "house of cards" myself, it wasn't the prettiest thing i ever saw, right? the picture we were getting was not good. you make a grade point. >> no. gerri: netflix is gobbling up 30% of the broadband room out there. so, it is causing a problem. but, i thought we were going to have net neutrality, which means everybody was going to have the same access to broadband and nobody was going, you know, pay more to get more access. what is the ultimate impact of
5:26 pm
what is going on right now? we may all be happy we get "house of cards" right now but is there going to be another shoe to drop down the road for consumers? >> well you know what? this really has nothing to do with net neutrality. i really think this has to do with business. netflix wanting to provide the best possible service, best possible quality of "house of cards" as possible. as soon as they started paying comcast, then at&t comes in, verizon is coming in. and so this may actually be a benefit to the consumer, because here is what we have, we're getting rid of the middleman, the cdn. prices may actually come down. gerri: wow. >> don't forget none of this actually operate in a vacuum. google is coming into all our communities. 34 cities last week, with a one gigabyte connection. six months from now that might be 10 gigabytes. instead of having one cable provider and sit there, oh, my gosh i'm at mercy of them, lower my bill, with competition comes
