janet yellen did. look at this. the market straight up. sandra smith is here. bad weather if you want to take that as the explanation for the weakening of the economy. hasn't weakened the stock market. sandra: a lot of retailers -- you hate this -- to beat expectations. the bar is set so low that many of them hurt and the stock market is being applauded. the performance, the retailers far exceeded expectations. the numbers were not great but when they weren't as bad as anyone thought they get a rally. stuart: individual companies are doing very well. they are making a lot of money and that is why they are going up. i honestly discount janet yellen will keep printing because the weather made the economy turns south. i have to discount that. sandra: a lot of retailers as bad as they were a pointing to

pent-up demand. if people were driving to the stores during the quarter maybe they head out before the ice thaws. stuart: looking at restricted says retailers posting first quarter profit drop since the recession. sandra: some of this is weather-related. j.c. penney and sears, two stories we are watching because they report better than expected earnings but still reported losses. keep that in mind. a lot of people point to the fact that there is pent-up demand, people will be out shopping. you were talking about abercrombie and fitch, inventories will be key because people were not heading to the pretend mortar stores inventories have been building. macy's said their inventories were up 4% from a year ago. walmart up 2%, abercrombie up 24%. what does that mean? doesn't have to put everything on sale with profit margins. stuart: we didn't buy much.

all that stock stayed in stock. sandra: on their shells. stuart: now they got to sell it, discounted and we will get bargains. sandra: we all get bargains and to get hurt? the retailers. stuart: the cold weather makes you want to book a trip to someplace warm. jetset her.com says 30% more trips were booked to more destinations thanks to the polar for tax. how about you? going any place? nicole: i would love to see people trade frostbite for sunshine. that is what they are doing. priceline and orbits looking good, orbits up 2%, jet setter.com says bookings for warm places like the caribbean and mexico up 38%. let's talk about rates these hotels charge. the rates they are charging are up 20% because layoffs are sold

out demand. mean time in places like chicago and new york close frigid areas the hotel rates have dropped 7%. stuart: i live in new york. thanks. we don't want to be a downer. we hate being a delaware especially when the market is up 111 points but a couple big losers. decker's make boots, i am surprised they are down. they are surely selling well in weather like this but apparently not. i expenses bringing profits down and a 13 point loss, big-time down. look at zoo lily. we are calling the amazon for moms, terrific run up, pulling back today down 4.5% but for the week it has been a fantastic performance. the irs has granted the tea party patriots tax-exempt status by the irs. dozens of other conservative political groups are waiting for the irs to approve their status. that could have a big impact on

the coming midterm elections. katie is from townhall.com. my point is if the irs is dragging its feet approving tax status for these conservative groups, they are still going to have their boots on their neck as they go into this election like they did in 2012. am i right or what? >> absolutely. when we saw the targeting starting in 2010 after tea party groups were successful in helping candidates get elected to overturn the house in 2010 which was historic, people forget that and all the targeting to place from 2010-2012 beating us to the 2012 presidential election. if you talk to these tea party groups they say the lack of tax-exempt status had impact, how much money they could raise, how many people were willing to join their groups in organizing and now all of a sudden we're coming up against 2014 midterm election and the irs is too busy

stuart: i know you heard already what senator harry reid said wednesday referring to the victims of obamacare he said, quote, there are plenty of horror stories being told, all of them are untrue. it is worth repeating that the leader of the united states senate called thousands of americans liars. here is my take. that is a disgrace to the senate, harry reid jet at the very least apologize. i am sure he will not. right before the last presidential election harry reid said mitt romney hadn't paid taxes in years. that was a lot. mitt romney had paid millions.

but this fear was dropped into the election campaign and harry reid could not be held legally liable because he had said it from the protected ground of the capitol building and on wednesday he spewed his insults from the protection of the senate floor. i don't think this makes him look good. he is trying to rally the troops behind obamacare, maybe he thinks provocative language will inspire is based. i think he is wrong on both counts. democrats are running away from obamacare and if the democrats's base is women, calling them liars will not rally them to the cause. look also at what damage harry reid, debate the issues of the day. accusing cancer patients of lying goes way beyond sharp edged debate that we should have. it is a personal insult. should have no place in our politics.

a failure of the leader of the senate. on his watch america went for years without a budget and under his watch the senate passed two of the worst pieces of legislation in history, obamacare and financial reform and now he has descended to personal insults. i think it is a sign of desperation. eight months from now there is an election and democrats may lose the senate. he could lose his leadership position. when you think about it that is the only sanction that can be used against harry reid. voters depose him. he can't be held legally liable for his statements but he can be held politically accountable. that is the way things should work. he should still apologize for the gross insult he has laid on thousands of decent americans. i think the man is a disgrace. we asked people a question,

and now they have been called liars by senator harry reid. tell us how it is. what is the horror story? >> you may have heard about julie. this lady lost her health insurance and she is on a dilemma of not knowing how she will be able to get her leukemia treated. that is one very real horror story. when she made that statement, my phone lines lit up. they called him and outrageous liar. not just a liar. and outrageous liar. we get calls all the time. they have been caught in the obamacare gap. they make too much money to get a subsidy and may make too much money to qualify for medicaid. people are desperate.

reed. >> that is an excellent point. i think it is just another example that many of the republicans that are in congress today, they have no fight in them. another example is when they brought forth a proposal to reform the tax code. i want to replace it. senator mcconnell's comment was, well, it probably will not go anywhere. the american people want to see some fight in the republicans. this is another example that they are not fighting hard enough for the american people, especially the kind of language that senator reed is doing which basically insults people who have these problems. >> i was really surprised when they came out with what i think is a reaganesque tax reform proposal. lower tax rates and cut out a lot of deductions. get the money flowing.
