tv   MONEY With Melissa Francis  FOX Business  June 9, 2014 2:00pm-3:01pm EDT

2:00 pm
not, it is always about money. melissa: investors take a bite out of apple. the tech giant trading under $100 after the seven for one stock split. we have charlie gasparino and jo ling kent and monica met at that. what do you think, would you i buy this stock? >> i don't see what is different. this is cosmetic change. there is mo nor value added. that retail investor, that price tag is lower than buying at 700-dollar mark. melissa: they could fit into an index. isn't that what is some of the thinking? >> could be potentially added to the dow 30. it is more accessible. ahead of new gadgets coming out in the fall, iphone 6 or iwatch. this is good for retail investor if you want to get in. melissa: charlie, are you apple
2:01 pm
guy? >> no. two years before lehman brothers blew up, they did a two for one split. melissa: this is why we keep charlie around. >> because i'm owed and i remember covering it. these changes are generally cosmetic. i, you know, it makes it easier for retail investor to get in. as we know retail investor is dumb money when they start pouring into the stock. >> that is not nice. >> that is absolutely true. absolutely true. when they plow into something that is not time to be in. melissa: another story charlie is on top of, family dollar adopting a poison pill after carl icahn revealed 9% stake on friday. he has been quiet since tweeting, right? >> he didn't tweet. the fox business network was on top of this. the minute it happened we were out there. we record his intentions to merge family dollar with dollar general. if you look at dollar general shares, we should show a chart, they're up tremendously, another 10% on top of that case.
2:02 pm
this is not dumb money. okay. this is smart money. his intention is pretty simple. those two midlevel retail firms. he wants to merge them, put them together, economies of scale. stock goes up. melissa: is it family dollar general? >> that sounds pretty good. melissa: i was sort of making fun. >> i just know in cycles like this, when you start merging companies like this it is generally creates shareholder value when you can merge two like-minded companies and i hate to say this, lay off a lot of people and create economies of sale. melissa: monica, do you like family dollar general? >> i think main consumer for these companies are low income consumers. they have been slapped around in this economy. walmart is taking a bite out of both of these retailers. the idea to get cost efficiencies. maybe they get more economies of scale when buying from various suppliers. so again, think this merger makes a lot of sense and something that would help them both move forward. melissa: jo, what is your take?
2:03 pm
>> i pretty much agree with what your take is. it is an opportunity. it may also reduce amount of competition for these type of retail stores, we know what could do to very price sensitive products. melissa: people get used to them, even when economy stays around. they are pretty happy with them. amazon taking on paypal. launching an online service letting users pay for third party services. jo, what do you think about this one? amazon is doing everything? >> they want to be the everything store. they're doing that now with payment services. we're expecting next week a 3d phone or some sort of a mobile device. jeff bezos is very much invested in amazon fitting into every aspect of your life. what is in question, is cybersecurity. and they have had a good record and paypal, how aggressive will they be. they're aggressive in the small business. melissa: why has paypal been able to be so dominant? who wants to take that on? >> they have a good service. melissa: doesn't seem that hard
2:04 pm
to duplicate. >> when you have a good service, you have a brand, right? you know, they have a proven track record of security. when you put those three together. i will say this though, jeff bezos i think, i really like him. he is brilliant. done a lot of different things but at some point -- melissa: has a crazy laugh. >> i said this to jamie dimon once when the "london whale" happened. jamie, you're a great guy, you're a great ceo but you can't be everywhere and all times and run a bank that is run efficiently. you're just too big. melissa: you think jeff bezos is in the same seat trying to do many things. >> at some point, "washington post" and this and that. melissa: you think this is big date they are supposed to unveil. >> i don't know about the phone. my response to this story, what took so long. they have 240 million consumers. why give ebay, your competitor a piece of every single one of those sales? amazon has a brand awareness with the consumer. they feel safe with that product. i don't think this is a very big leap. it's a really good move.
2:05 pm
melissa: but you do have to set that up kind of confidence. the thing about paypal they take the guesswork out of it. >> they have robots -- >> i'm just saying there comes a point where amazon is spread really too thin i think. but i'm not saying this is the point but if you're in the stock you have to watch these things. >> this aligns with 244 million users. opportunity for them to take advantage of convenience. melissa: okay. cleveland clinic ceo toby cosgrove withdrawing his name from the next secretary of department of veterans affairs this is out of the gate. this guy has been very honest and forthright everything he talked about. one of the first guys to come out say there would be layoffs at cleveland clinic as a result of obamacare. no question it would lead to higher costs. then i said he thinks 3/4 of people's insurance bills have gone up as a result of obamacare. most recently last week he said within the next 10 years, the government's going to be paying 75% of people's health care
2:06 pm
bills. they were basically headed towards single-payer. he has gone out. he has so much credibility behind him as leader of cleveland clinic and gone out there said things that were very anti-the administration. they will put him in charge of the va. didn't make sense to me from the beginning. he is toon honest. >> if does if you realize how screwed the va it is, what a desperate situation it is. you need someone very high caliber at this guy even if he talks the talk. says something he didn't take the job. this is no dummy. melissa: i guess. melissa: he said this is extraordinary difficult decision but i decided to withdraw from consideration for the position and withdraw from due to cleveland clinic and i have with the organization? do you think he is too much of a truth teller and they couldn't handle it? >> i certainly see someone of his level going in and assessing what the job actually entails. maybe taking a step back, okay,
2:07 pm
maybe what i have now is what i actually want? melissa: he has an enormous job as it is at cleveland clinic. monica, any thoughts on this one? >> i think that was some pr company saying heck no, putting nice colorful language behind it. the job here is really taking a government organization and turning it into a well-moving private sector organization. melissa: what a nightmare. >> what a thankless job that would be. melissa: he would have to. that would be the job you, would be -- seems like i'm impossible. it is like an impossible job you have a case of the mondays? google has you covered. the company rolling out a new alarm feature wake you up falling asleep or taking bus or train to work. i know a million people happen to. i drive myself. i haven't fallen asleep on way to work. any of you guys slept past your stop? >> definitely. >> no. melissa: never, charlie? >> never. melissa: you take the train to connecticut. >> i'm usually reading.
2:08 pm
melissa: what do you think about this one, jo? >> i think i need it. it's a great idea. maximize the hours of sleep. whether you're on subway for ten minutes or an hour, why not. melissa: another clever way for google to track your movement. >> that is the real story here. melissa: where you're going. knows when you stop. >> this is marginal thing. oh, they got alarm on google thing. >> someone stealing your purse. unless they do that -- >> real utility here is in data mining, right? melissa: always. they always know what your exact commute is all the time. >> based on where you going, thanks, guys. the president is back with his pen and his phone. this time it is for the kids. obama is taking executive action right now on student debt impacting millions of people but who is going to foot the bill for this one? plus it is 5:00 somewhere. it is starting to feel a whole like friday with ben & jerry's latest ice cream, tequila marshmellows included.

2:15 pm
you make it harder to borrow and tuition prices go down. >> they're not saying that. my producer, she quoted doug in their story, really good story at foxbusiness.com pointed out that this, is a problem that the federal government is already, has been bailing out students in debt for a long time. just ramping up. >> right. >> as you increase the bailouts, as you increase the forgiveness, guess what? they have not changed the other side, student loans are easy to get. melissa: yeah. >> if they're this easy to get, your college prices will undoubtedly keep going up. that is the real problem here, colleges, it costs 200 grand to go to nyu,. melissa: because there is so much money available. >> that is insane! melissa: it has gone up faster than anything else. inflation in tuition is outrageous and direct result of this money being available. julie what do you think? monica, i'm sorry. he said julie. >> julie too. >> i think this indicates a lack of financial literacy in
