great almost murder mystery for everything that could go wrong did go wrong making for a great spectacle. ashley: fasnating because they suffered a variety of tropical diseases, lost his hearing after an insect crawled in his ear, at one point was temporarily blinded which almost in ironic fashion get to a huge lake he cannot see it because he is blind. how do they get into a rivalry, why did they end up at odds with each other for so much? >> the interesting thing is you would think the only two english guys who can speak the same language with one another traveling in africa for almost three years would get along with each other.

thinking lake victoria was the center of the nile, they would speak at the first, putting his point of view across and by the time burton got there, he was ruined because everybody believed they could speak. he had a dueling scar on one cheek, he was a man known for being infamous with his behavior and his anger, he would have to speak with a vengeance did ashley: he ended up shooting himself accidentally climbing over a brick wall. thgun went off and shot himself in the chest. >> i don't think it was an accident. he literally put it up against his chest, you don't do that if you are at all familiar with

guns. he felt he had no way out. he had lost his good name. what a tragic way to end for such a courageous individual. ashley: a big part of this book as he wanted to find out what are the qualities of these explorers, not only these two, but the other great explorers, what did you find out? >> again, as you and i have discussed, as i wrote this book i began to wonder what qualities do they possess that i didn't possess? what is the difference between guys like that and guywere a little more normal? i found there was a progression, curiosity of courage, passion, independence, self-discipline and perseverance. that is the path to greatness for any great undertaking if you are steve jobs or lewis and clark were chris for columbus, that is the path that gets you from point a to point b. it was fun to research that.
