tv   Lou Dobbs Tonight  FOX Business  August 6, 2014 10:00pm-11:01pm EDT

10:00 pm
>> we would like to see you again. tomorrow night, we are back with a new show and 9:00 a.m. on friday as well. have a great evening next. lou: good evening, everyone. president obama just moments ago wrapped up a news conference following the conclusion of the africa leaders summit. president obama, well, he was delayed by more than an hour beginning that news conference, and he held court on a range of topics from ebola, executive action, tax aversions, russian sanctions and more. mr. obama was, to put it kindly, long on answers but short on substance and he revealed little about his administration's plans to tackle those issues affecting the nation and the world. the president tried to project a
10:01 pm
leader in charge in light of devastating new poll numbers that show mr. obama's foreign policy failures have now gone beyond the tolerance of most americans. public approval of the president's handling of foreign policy has now sunk to an all-time low of 36%. six in 10 now disapprove of his the and numbers that were sent one broken down into individual issues and "the wall street journal" and nbc survey finds just 26% approve of the president's response to the moat and translation passenger jet that was shot down over the ukraine. just 23% approve of the handling between ukraine and russia and his reaction is 18% approval and the administrations was on to the israeli on hamas conflict, 17% approval.
10:02 pm
14% approval on the president's rise to the islamic state in iraq. and here is president obama and his own words this three months ago as he described his foreign policy strategy as little more than trying to avoid making mistakes. or as his senior aides put it, not doing dumb stuff. >> that may not always attract a lot of attention, and it doesn't make for good arguments on sunday morning shows. but it does -- it avoids errors and you hit singles and doubles and every once in while we may be able to hit a home run but we subtly advance the interests of the american people with folks around the world. >> the president was wrong, of course.
10:03 pm
and it's not that he is playing small ball, the president is actually striking out and looking in most instances, not even taking the bat off his shoulder. this administration now bears responsibility for the first ambassador killed on foreign soil in more than 30 years. ambassador christopher stevens killed in september 11 attack and then tosti. on his watch, the first general killed in a combat zone in more than four decades, and president obama has fractured relations with our democratic ally in the middle is, climbing to publicly support israel in the war against radical islamist terrorists and russian president vladimir putin terrorizing our eastern european allies and he is unfazed by so-called tough economic sanctions imposed by the obama administration and
10:04 pm
european union. putin returning to world standing and he has compounded and frustrated this president and his security team so far. we will be taking all this up here with columnist michael goodwin, former clinton adviser doug schon and also tonight, the death toll rising, hearing a thousand as the world health organization conference converter converted an emergency meeting to determine what can be done to slow the outbreak. doctor william shatner here tonight. and confirming to benjamin netanyahu, willing to extend a cease-fire with hamas without conditions, chief of staff joins us tonight and we begin with empirical proof that america is suffering from a severe case of
10:05 pm
obama fatigue. joining me now, michael goodwin and doug schon, thank you both for being here. let's turn to these numbers. first, this is devastating for the white house and i can't imagine the president wouldn't publicly react with some sort of statement given detention for foreign policy, there seems to be one necessary for this entire administration. >> those numbers are extraordinary and i've never seen anything like it for any politician on any level on any issue. 18%, 15%, 14%, this is simply unprecedented in the modern era. but i would say that just watching the president today in the way that he approaches all of that long list of topics that he raised, he is giving up and
10:06 pm
he's heading off to play golf and on vacation and it's just a sense that he is not going to engage and he's not going to do anything he doesn't want to do. so he will find something with the executive orders, trying to gin up the executive base of the midterm, but he has stopped being president. >> sadly he is still president and therein lies the problem. he is not seeking to make policy. he's not able to rally our allies. his red lights mean nothing and michael made what i think is a usually important point. rather than seeking consensus within our measly contentious congress, he is basically saying that either i won't do it, so sue me, or more tellingly, i will do an executive order and to me this is a fundamental constitutional principle and president of united said state says that he will fix the
10:07 pm
immigration law by executive order rather than legislation. >> the idea, these are the things that the president has to do and you have to work with others and solve problems and he stopped trying and he still president officially, but he has stopped being the president and doing the things that we expect a president to do. >> if he is not conducting himself as president, what is the conducting himself as and how to troubleshoot the nation be that we have a president who has made a declaration that he will use executive actions and orders at the very onset of this phase of his presidency to go around congress. he made no equivocation and this
10:08 pm
is to circumvent the constitution of the united states in the president's own words. >> your second question is an easy one to answer because the american people have spoken. 40% approval, michael is exactly right, with each individual problem down 15 to 20%, he is effectively advocating from the office. there is no leadership from behind or at all and sadly for those of us who believe in the american idealism, as i know you do and michael does a mother is always version of any and or any values anywhere. lou: he had an opportunity this afternoon when speaking of the africa's amount when asked about the experimental drug, the question was why isn't it going to black people in africa rather than to a doctor and a nurse who happen to be white without a reference to regard limited
10:09 pm
amount of this drug. there was an opportunity for the president to say to that question in the world that those two white people were in africa, caring for thousands of black people and they should be saluted and regarded as heroes. so he chose to take on the tone of a bureaucrat and a week and tepid bureaucratic situation. this is what is left of the obama promised in 2008 and ultimately the presidency in 2009. what is that? >> that performance today was one of the worst. but it always follows a string and it's giving up on trying to make any kind of reach out to the american people and to talk like you care about these things. as a president you have to
10:10 pm
pretend and appear to be serious even if you don't feel it every morning. he's not even trying and i think that's what the answer to the question is. you give a perfectly good answer that the president should have given and he doesn't even think that way and no one apparently is telling him to an sar, he's not listening. so i think that we are headed for some kind of a crisis. because this cannot continue for the next 2.5 years. >> if i was advising the president of the united states, i would say the first thing he should do is walk out and say that we stand with the elected leaders of africa, particularly the nigerians against boca -- boca and they have suggested god-fearing good people to persecution and in many cases death. this is intolerable.
10:11 pm
it sounded like a bureaucrat talking about programs rather than a leader talking about policies and ideals and it made me very sad. lou: he seems to be a man spiritless and as you put it, he seems to have lost interest in the job. then, i mean, would it be appropriate that he resigned to if those indeed are genuine? >> i think what would be appropriate as for the congressional leadership and those people who have access to basically say, mr. president, you have to get into the game and you have to reevaluate how you are handling herself. i've been with the president with betsy policies not working and they want to change this. this man is something that has to be rally.
10:12 pm
this is to finish up the job otherwise i agree. if he's not going to be president, he doesn't want to act the part or make the decisions. >> this country is coming to the world that we ask of our leaders to play the role and god give us a man or woman who has that capability. so thank you gentlemen, as always. michael good one, thank you. new details tonight from the afghan soldier who killed major general harold greene and afghanistan yesterday. the highest-ranking officer to be killed in combat in more than or years and an afghan military official says the 27-year-old shooter was supposed to remain in his room and hand him his weapon, but he instead hid with his m-16 rifle and then carried out this attack.
10:13 pm
his body being flown back to the united states and expected to arrive in delaware early tomorrow morning. and the tea party coming up short in one of its final chances this year with a republican establishment that they would have, incumbent pat roberts last night defeating radiologist, 40 to 41%, roberts is heavily favored to win a fourth term in these midterm elections now just 89 days away. coming up next, the president and his secretary of state struggling with the parade of benjamin netanyahu. the former chief of

10:17 pm
lou: israeli prime minister benjamin on yahoo today called israel's actions in kosovo justified and proportionate. he made his first public statement since the announcement of the latest cease-fire that appears to be holding. >> we deeply regret every civilian casualty. every single one. and the people of gaza are not our enemy. our enemy as hamas and other terrorist organizations trying to kill our people. lou: the prime minister detailed how hamas mortars have been fired and also today, delegations from israel and the palestinians in cairo for another round of peace talks. u.s. secretary of state john kerry calling upon both sides to
10:18 pm
use the 72 hour truce as a steppingstone to restart more far-reaching negotiations. joining us now is george birnbaum, the former chief of staff for benjamin netanyahu and currently the ceo of gev international. the government of israel since you have art event party to a 72 hour cease-fire negotiated by the egyptians would have been not only the preference of the israeli government that hamas is well, is this administration being helpful or are they becoming intrusive? >> i don't know that they're being helpful, but i think they're trying to find a way to be relevant in a region where there had become irrelevant. secretary kerry is trying to broker a cease-fire in the
10:19 pm
industry to qatar in turkey. they are not liked well by the egyptians, posting five al qaeda viper operatives, and these are the people that are supposed to negotiate an honest these fire agreement? it's a little ridiculous. i think they're trying to be relevant in this tuition where the egyptians are the true broker for the cease-fire right now. lou: i think that many are surprised that the egyptians sure such common perspectives that they would be considered as an honest broker for these negotiations, particularly after the breach between egypt and the obama administration and the ouster of hosni mubarak and the ascension of the general.
10:20 pm
>> and in between though her was mohammed morsi and a member of the muslim brotherhood. egyptians know all too well what this means to country from within. so they know that is why there is such a good broker for the negotiation. lou: would you argue with this view, which i truly believe that israel has come out of this with aonger position in the world media than in previous conflicts of the various years. and let's say that there is an anti-israeli view and that deal was constrained and netanyahu could not have been more direct
10:21 pm
and forceful in saying that he will pursue his nations interest come hell or high water. >> i think a lot of that has to do with early in the conflict israelis had five cease-fires or brokered by hamas. once that occurred and people saw that was the true face of hamas, they were not interested in this. once they saw that, i think it helps him quite a bit. lou: where does israel go now to what is your governments hope for the future? >> the hope is that they can work side-by-side, state-by-state, as they have been talking about and so president obama, the two people side-by-side can only occur when one side is part of this. it's not the palestinians. even elements of al qaeda exist
10:22 pm
and we need to get rid of those fundamentalist islamic elements before we can really and truly a piece of the side-by-side, which is all the israelis want to do. >> the egyptian government would have a better sense of alliance in cooperation with the israeli government inciting a common enemy, radical islamists, then apparently is shared by this administration. >> this administration doesn't really care about the sovereignty of its own borders so why would they care about that? so i'm not surprised by this demonstration. but fighting this we all suffered on september 11. but this is a daily fight and the same thing that egypt is
10:23 pm
doing on a daily basis. so i think that that common denominator helps the two sides understand better what it means day-to-day director really uproot islamic terror to live in peace. lou: charles: george birnbaum, thanku so much. time for our online poll results. is it time for your congressman or senator to be reelected? 78% said no. what does that mean for these midterms? vote in our poll tonight. and which in your judgment, which is the vice president? president carter, president george w. bush, president nixon, or president obama? we will have updated result that loudobbs.com area and my commentary on why this president might consider humility and a relationship to achievement. stay with us in new york state, we're changing the way we do business, with startup ny. we've created tax free zones throughout the state. and startup ny companies will be investing

lou: coming up world he'll organization convening an emergency meeting as ebola death toll nears a thousand, leading disease expert, will join us.
10:27 pm
us. we go live to the scene in texas, with latest. but first, a few comments about the president and his gloats over the modest improvement in our troubl troubled economy of . >> good news that economy clearly is getting stronger. things are getting better. your engines are reving louder. we have come a long way over the last 5 1/2 years. our challenges are nowhere near as dawning as they were when i first came into office. lou: president was touting the string of the economy. because it seemed like a safer topic then say eruptions of violence. inspired by this administration.
10:28 pm
problem with president's pro clamation in progress, they are disdowned from reality, ask the american people. take a look at these sobering numbers from that new "wall street journal" nbc 7/39 news poll. 64% of americans are dissatisfyed with the say the of the economy. 6 in 10 say that america is in a state of decline. 60%. 74% say they do not feel confident that life ther for thr children's generation will be better than it has been for us. when i see overwhelming pessimism like that, it infurates he to watch this president engage in his
10:29 pm
customary denial and narcissistic behavior it staoeupl fotimefor mr. obama tof himself, to find whatever place ofer with ship, a place to seek humility. i don't mean a little humble, i mean a lot humble, suitable for a man who promised so much, and has failed as so much, delivered so little. with so little comment from the broad national media. humble should not be so hard for such a man given the -- in 6 years of his administration clear he and his white house are incapable of meaningful action or even acted somehow sufficient to at least solve small problems, small issues. it is neve never an easy task oy
10:30 pm
president but the american people always deserve a president who will work, who at least as the energy, imagine flag, and commit tom resolve -- informatioengine imagination and commitment to resolve issues rather than create and per 58 wait them. >> welcoming up next. we will talk with dr. william shafter on the worsens contag

lou: hawaii residents are gearing up for double trouble. two hurricanes are headed toward the island this week, first is iirkiselle. and system trailing it hurricane julio has winds of 75 miles an

hour, just strong enough to makeat a hurricane but building, julio could head north but projected path has it headed to hawaii sunday night. >> centers for disease control issueing a level one activation of emergency operation center, in response to oh, bolsa outbreak. highest level, a cdc spokesman telling fox this all hands on deck procedure allows agent to mobilize and pool all available resources across the agency immediately if requireed, last time they declareed a level 1 was during 2009 h1n1 endemic. joining us now, one of the country's leading physician, dr. william shaftner from vanderbilt university. did is good to see, it is good
10:35 pm
to see you, have you back with us, thank you for taking the time. >> my pleasure. lou: let's turn to this level one activation. your thoughts? your reaction to it? >> well we were waiting for it we knew it was coming, this indicates a really serious commitment of cdc all hands, to address the ebola outbreak. the outbreak in africa, but also ramifications in the world. so, people will be volunteering from all parts of the agency to work on this problem for the next several months. we think. focused on this problem. lou: and you know as you say many are listening to us discuss ebolda. higher level of, all right on part of this cdc. and they are asking, thinking about the two americans who have returned to this country, stkreubg en witstricten with - d
10:36 pm
the doctor is improving because of the experimental drug. and the nurse, who has ebold aher condition is described as weak but improving. is your outlook for them positive at-this-point? >> it is positive, we're guardedly optimistic, fingers crossed, prayers said, we want the best for both. we hope and wish they will recover, steadly, and quickly. lou: talking about that activation, beyond emory of in university, atlanta, the east coast, in africa, right now, western africa. this ou outbreak we're told by every expert is now uncontrolled, and it is headed they know not where, they right
10:37 pm
now don't know how to get turn control. -- to get it under control, your thoughts, and your outlook? >> i think we know how. but the task is large. you have to go there, and find every case. and then bring them to medical care, that does two things it gives best kara, veil able to the patients, and gets them out of their home, this is purpose because otherwise -- this is important, otherwise family would care for that patient and get infected themselves, we need to find all contacts of the patients, trace them down, put them under rigorous surveillance, if they turn into cases, we can get them to a hospital, then we need to educate the population, there are a lot of rumors, and fall statements, we need to correct that and get everyone on the same page. do this in a sustained and
10:38 pm
thorough fashion, this is a large job, cdc will be sending 50 people over there to join people from the w.h.o., and doctors without borders and others who are trying to help. lou: very serious, and we're now approaching a thousand death toll. what is the mortality rate of this disease? as best we understand it? >> in this strain, in this outbreak, about 50 to 60% of people, given medical care they are or not receiveing in africa is the mortality rate, just over half of the people who get this infection die, but it means that half survive. if we can improve me medical ca, we hope to improve that. lou: we know that ebola has moved beyond africa to middle east, one person dead.
10:39 pm
of the disease in saudi arabia, in have been 7 tests of folks in new york. all of them, tkpwafrpbl thank gg back negative. but we know that the cdc is not sharing the location of where people are being testd is that wise? >> it is. getting general information is important, against the background, that all of us run infection control programs and hospitals know if such a patient, a candidate, comes to our instution, we can take care of them, we have trained personnel, we have the equipment. we know about the infection control plow seders -- breadth procedures. so we're confident about that.
10:40 pm
then, in the tradition, of patient confidentialityty keep specific names and locations quiet. we don't wish to create hysteria, but we in infection control, we can care for these patients, through the ou throug. lou: all right dr. william shaftner thank you. >> good to be with you. lou: european space agent, rosetta spacecraft the first to rendezvous with a comet, after a 4 billion mile chase through space over the course of a decade, if all goes as planned, rosetta will drop a land or that comet, and the result we hope a better understanding of this giant ball of dust and ice, as
10:41 pm
it hurdles toward the sun. up next, america's open borders, leading to the death of another border patrol agent. border patrol agent. manhattan's institute heather when folks think about what they get from alaska, border patrol agent. manhattan's institute heather they think salmon and energy. but the energy bp produces up here creates something else as well: jobs all over america. engineering and innovation jobs. advanced safety systems & technology. shipping and manufacturing. across the united states,
10:42 pm
bp supports more than a quarter million jobs. when we set up operation in one part of the country, people in other parts go to work. that's not a coincidence. it's one more part of our commitment to america.
10:43 pm
10:44 pm
lou: two illegal immigrants from mexico charged with first-degree murder in shooting death of a off-duty border patrol agent, both have been arrested and de54ed maned -- deported many te before this latest court appear an. appearance. >> good evening, we're getting new reaction from the sister-in-law of this slain border patrol agent, terrifying and also heart wrenching, she described javier vega jr. as a family oriented guy who loved his 3 boys more than anything in the world. up until this very end, this
10:45 pm
36-year-old lived a life of service. prior to joining u.s. border patrol, more than 6 years ago, he served our country, in the marine corps, and now he is gone. leaving his loved one to lean on each other and his law enforcement family to help take care of them. >> private has been an amazing man, we have people staning guard, checking in with us, they were amazing throughout this funeral arrangements. >> reporter: you are now looking at two men accused of carrying out this unthink. crime, 30-year old gustavo, he has been arrested, at least 4 other times for entering united states illegally, but he kept come could right back in, the other, 40-year-old hernandez, has been deported at least twice, that we know of. and they both, mexican
10:46 pm
nationals, they have confessed to the shooting, but tell authorities they had no idea they killed a border agent. they are being held without bond, and local sheriff down in south texas, where it happened, tells us they believe th the 2 n are connected to a dangerous and much larger mexico cartel. lou: thank you very much. casey staoe. >> we'll talk with manhattan institute heather mcdonald. >> on wall street stocks little changed after triple digit losses yesterday. volume on big tujunga -- big board 3. 5 billion shares. >> next.

10:50 pm
lou: in midst of all this, i want to give thanks to "new york post" cindy adams and her great piece, she highlighted some of my views on president obama's mistaken young headed and i think horrible policies, on a hoist of issues. she did that with her humor and wit. it is so thanks cindy. >> let's turn to some of those mistaken policies now, more dismal numbers for president from latest woeupbl "wall street journal" nbc poll, 11% of americans are satisfied with obama administration handles of border crisis, think about it
10:51 pm
64% dissatisfied, it anyone in this white house concerned about the will of the american people? joining me now, how this country is losing capacity to apply the rule of law, on our border, manhattan instead senior fellow, contributeing editor heather mcdonald. >> thank you. lou: i talk earlier, with doug schoan, i talked with michael goodwin, none of us have seen numbers that come close to these for this president. these are a disaster are they not? >> well, of course, because the policies are disastrous, the american people are clear sighted i think about what is happening on the border, and tragic case that we talked about before, lou of the border murder, it is an interesting case, because, these thugs kept comeing into the country, even though they were eligible for 20
10:52 pm
year prison sentences under a law that said if you have been formerly deported and you reenter you are guilty of a serious felony, they faced a quarter million dollar fine in theory, they kept coming why, they know these laws are so lacks, they are one of laws targeted for eviceation by congressional democrats as too hank. imagine what -- too harsh. imagine what we'll see if obama or democratic majority get getst way, and ce decimates our immign regime. lou: we cannot disconnect that, they are as one. perhaps a few, a haupbd full of handfuls of senators have broken with the president on a few of these
10:53 pm
policies, but this party is supporting this president and his policys that are so unpopular those who say if he goes with an executive order giveing amnesty to as many as 5 million ill weatheringein illegl hell the break loose at the polls. >> i hope so but i am more concerned about conservatives. that should understand that rule of law is what makes this country great, there are far too many conservative analysts who are happy with the situation we have today and think we should brush off people coming in to the country illegally, and we can pick and choose which laws you follow, if they think we have wrong type of immigration laws they brush it off, that to me. lou: how could anyone call themselves a conservative and hole such views -- hold such
10:54 pm
views, fundamental to conservatism is respect for the constitution and the rule of law. >> right, and conservatives like to trump it, the victory in new york city over crime, in the that bebegan in 1490 14 -- 1990s when we began enforcing the law, we learned that policeing and law enforcement has capacity to change behavior, that lesson is cast aside with immigration, or illegal immigration. >> is it casting sydor is there a campaign of disinformation? wageed by the chamber of commerce that would like to posture itself as a conservative, pro, organization, when it is. pro corporateist. but not pro small, entrepreneural. it is a particular add mixture of left wing social political activist organizations, that
10:55 pm
chamber of commerce, business round table, middle class, small business, entrepreneurs caught in middle, they are the ones that pave the way, and pay the way for job creation, it is stunning to think that you would say, that conservatives, that you are more concerned about conservatives because, i don't sthaoepl as conservatives asee t all. >> they would identify themselves as such, so you lose rule of law. lou: and pirates would often fly a false flag, rather than the skull and bones that would have been appropriate. it is time we start focusing on reality this have a huge disinformation campaign it is lie upon lie is it not? >> another reality in los angeles, here, we have another murder, a 24-year-old, engineering student at usc
10:56 pm
murdered by a group of tines biteen to death, gang -- teens, beaten to date, the gang leader, an illegal alien, entered at age 12, and he is now 19. the low skilled population that is joining gang couldture we have to stop that. >> thank you heather we appreciate it. >> thank you. lou: time for your comments, colean, thank you for being honest about president obama wanting these illegal children to cross the border. >> personaly, i no longer trust the government to get anything correct. and i think it may be right to the bottom. it may start at top, edward in connecticut walter concite said that media can only handle one crisis at a time, obama is abuseing that rule, he creates
10:57 pm
creasescrises. thank you for your comments, thank you for in new york state, we're changing the way we do business, with startup ny. we've created tax free zones throughout the state. and startup ny companies will be investing hundreds of millions of dollars in jobs and infrastructure. thanks to startup ny, businesses can operate tax free for 10 years. no property tax. no business tax. and no sales tax. which means more growth for your business, and more jobs. it's not just business as usual. see how new york can help your business grow, at startup.ny.gov legs, for crossing. feet...splashing. better things than the joint pain and swelling of moderate to severe rheumatoid arthritis. if you're trying to ma, now may be time to ask about xeljanz. xeljz (tofacitinib) is a small pill,
10:58 pm
not an injection or infusion, for adults with moderate to severe ra for whom methotrexate did not work well. xeljanz can lower your ability to fight infections, including tuberculosis. seris, sometimes fatal infections and cancers have happened in patients taking xeljanz. don't start xeljanz if you have any infection, unless ok with your doctor. tears in the stomach or intestines, low bod cell counts and higher liver tes and cholesterol levels have happened. your doctor should perform blood tts before you start and while taking xeljanz, and roinely check certain liver tests. tell your doctor if you have been to a region where certain fungal infections are common, and if you have had tb, hepatitis b oc, or are prone to infections. tell your doctor about all the medicines you take, and if you are pregnant, or plan to be. taken twice daily, xeljanz can reduce the joint pain and swelling of moderate to severe ra, even without methotrexate. ask if xeljanz is right for you. of moderate to severe ra, even without methotrexate. so this board gives me rates on progressive direct and other car insurance companies? yes.
