10:00 pm
and be sure to watch the evolution of terror on friday night from 9:00 p.m. until midnight. think of for being a part of our show tonight and we will you friday. tom: good evening, everyone. i am calm sullivan and for lou dobbs and we have news. giving president obama the arms and the funds to take on the islamist state terrorists. and while iranian president talked about this today, he blasted the new obama strategy as ridiculous. >> we cannot tolerate this and
10:01 pm
it doesn't make any difference from our viewpoints if the person is muslim or jewish or the father of any religion. tom: he went on to question president obama on the ground in iraq, are they afraid of their soldiers being killed in the fight that they claim is against terrorism and holding it hearing just days tom: lists and the minnesota vikings tell adrian peterson to stay away from one of the nfl's
10:02 pm
most prominent sponsors. but where is roger goodell in all of this and we begin in washington where the list of senior defense officials current and past calling for ground troops and the so-called adamant ground forces for two president obama visited u.s. central command and try to close the door. >> the american forces that have been deployed to iraq do not and will not have a combat mission.
10:03 pm
and bob gates told cbs news that the u.s. cannot win without sending in combat troops. >> the u.s. can count on the iraqis to serve as the ground troops. >> it is more effective to use our unique capabilities in support of partners on the ground. so they can secure their own countries. reporter: even though ray odierno raised serious questions about the iraqi forces. thing that they did not write at all when confronted by isis, telling reporters that you've got to have ground forces that are capable of going in and
10:04 pm
rooting them out. adding that the u.s. air strikes will not be the end-all and be-all solution. >> we're not there to support combat troops in any of these engagements. >> the president's own support continues to dip at "the new york times" cbs news poll finding, 34% approve of the handling of foreign policy and 50% disapprove. and democrats like joe manchin are questioning the president strategies in a coalition that john kerry says that he is putting together. >> the most important is to know your enemy. it is equally important to know your allies. and i am not confident that we know who our allies are. and it seems like a political answer as they cry out about this uncivilized activity.
10:05 pm
we have come back from a week of serious meetings. >> for two later today the house voted to give the president the power to train and arm the syrian rebels. tom: thank you, ed henry at the white house. in the meantime, top homeland security officials testifying that the islamic state is an eminent concern for the country, but stopping movement from the middle east including radicalized americans is a challenge. homeland security secretary jeh johnson claiming that amnesty would encourage both terris to likely come forward.
10:06 pm
>> it hinders our ability to track those individuals, which is why from my homeland security perspective, i would like to see those people come forward and get on the books. and the risk to homeland security grows when there are larger numbers of undocumented people in any one place or any crowded area. i can't disagree with that. and turning now to the house select committee. hillary clinton and her role in the tragedy and responsibility for the lapse of security on the ground that night dominated today's testimony. chief congressional correspondent mike emanuel was on capitol hill tonight with our
10:07 pm
report. >> the secretary of state should personally review the security situation of diplomatic facilities, closing those that are highly vulnerable and threatened. why do you think of the 1999 arb went out of its way to use the word personally? reporter: early on there was an effort made to be bipartisan in town. >> maybe we can be what those four brave men were. neither republican or democrat for two if it's too late to bring back the americans killed at benghazi, but it's an opportunity to make a difference
10:08 pm
now. >> what we will do will have lasting effects even when we've gone to heaven. and that is how we have to look at this for two lawmakers heard from security officials who reviewed policies that there continues to be a benghazi approach to diplomatic security. >> or the smoke and remove the mayors, now is the time for the department of date to institutionalize some real meaningful and progressive change. >> it was anything but independent. >> i have pushed every button i could possibly push.
10:09 pm
>> there are signs that the panel will look into the situation further about hillary clinton scrubbing documents making officials look bad remap this is certainly a part of what we are doing, i am confident that he will come before the committee. >> he noted it is a very dangerous world. tom: mike emanuel, thank you so much. meanwhile, the iris commissioner getting grilled over lois lerner's missing e-mails. testifying that the irs did not save any information and there is no outside system to store agency e-mails. and earlier this month the inspector general found dead the
10:10 pm
agency failed to search 760 computer servers that could contain lois lerner's e-mails. we are coming right back. >> president obama sticking to his guns, telling a military audience that he will not send troops to fight another ground war in iraq. mcguinness told us if it is we've never sold a house before.
10:11 pm
(agent) i'll walk you guys through every step. there are a lot of buyers for a house like yours. (husband) that's good to know.
10:12 pm
i take prilosec otc each morning for my frequent heartburn. because it gives me zero heartburn... annc: prilosec otc the number one doctor recommend frequent heartburn medicine for nine straight years. one pill each morning 24 hours zero heartburn.
10:13 pm
tom: the family of steven sotloff, one of two american journalist beheaded by the islamic state, claiming that it was hectored and bullied by the obama administration. the family spokesman claiming that the key and james foley were threatened with prosecution if they paid ransom to the islamic state.
10:14 pm
and the white house saying that martin dempsey, who testified before congress said that ground troops might be needed in the fight against the islamic state. twenty to discuss whether president obama is on a collision course with his general, we have kernel bob maginnis. this story has fascinated me and i am an old army guy and i was always taught that what your commander says goes and there's no debate in the military. >> typically you do not. the reality is that with this being tried in the public court of opinion, generals have opinions and they talk to those of us which are not significant. and the reality is even during
10:15 pm
the bush administration there were a group of general officers who started to speak out against what secretary donald rumsfeld was doing at that time. and certainly what general ray odierno said earlier in the day. it is really up to the line. and he talked about the testimony. but if he feels under his prerogative as adviser to the commander in chief, the military advisor, he tells them what he thinks. and we need to make sure that art chairman has that freedom. and obviously the president decided today when he was in tampa that he wasn't going to accept th and as you have been reporting for the last few minutes, i don't think anyone outside of
10:16 pm
the white house in a few political people that support the president, believe that he has a plan that is going to work. reed if that is the case, is this just the pentagon racing the flag up the flagpole to see what the reaction is of the public? or is this going to lead to some sort of fight where we will see resignations or firings? >> i don't think you're going to find too many resignations. and i can remember talking to some very senior people years later after the vietnam war and they regretted not telling president johnson the truth. what they ought to be doing, and we never would've gone into the quagmire that we ended up with in vietnam. and there are a few principles that will stand up and there will be some that will
10:17 pm
eventually step down. but if this president believes that this threat from isis is serious and if it threatens our homeland in spite of what jeh johnson said in the broadcast moments ago, then we need to take immediate and decisive action and that, unfortunately, would probably take thousands of our tired young soldiers who have been fighting for the last 13 years to go back and take care of isis. because based upon what the central intelligence agency has been saying for the last couple of weeks has radically expanded in influence and size and it controls a large swath of land not just in iraq that syria end its beginning to have impact on turkey and jordan and i think the saudi arabians are rattling in their boots. tom: former defense secretary bob gates said two things. you heard about this.
10:18 pm
this is where he said that this plan is not going to work, but on the other hand he said that we have been fighting al qaeda for 13 years and you can't say that we have defeated them. so is it going to be where we are going to come to some sort of nuanced statement about what we kind of mission accomplished sunday? >> as long as they don't attack us, the reality is that these people have been chopping off heads as of late and they have threatened to take over the white house. it may be both teams. but given what al qaeda has been able to accomplish and given our real trepidation and expenditure of almost 7000 american lives and two wars and trillions of dollars, either this is a serious threat or it is not. if it is, let's get out of it and if it is, let's take care of it. unfortunately you're not going to rely upon the type of fighters that are going to syria, the iraqis, as we have
10:19 pm
been, they left this in a fight. but if we really want this to be accomplished, unfortunately we will have to rely upon ourselves. tom: kernel robert maginnis, thank you for your expertise. well, it is time to take a look at our online poll results. we asked you if you would urge congress to give president obama more authority on any issue, including war. taking a look at this, it's an overwhelming 95% of you that said no way. and the battle for scotland is one day away after the breakup of the united kingdom's names like a real possibility. the latest polls there are showing that it is a race too close to call, more than 4 million registered voters in scotland deciding whether to declare independence or remain a part of the united kingdom. record turnout is expected and global markets are bracing for

10:25 pm
anheuser-busch christmas messages. >> yes, we are building this before that sports marketing and the consumers spend a lot of time in sports, so to reach the beer consumer, that was a place for it. tom: you also have to know that you look around any sports waited and you have guys who get in trouble. so what is the surprise? >> unfortunately it is not a surprise. so how do we address it when someone makes a mistake sponsors are looking to increase the image of their brand and they say, okay, they can market
10:26 pm
budweiser. but they feel that it enhances their overall programs. and it sounds like the league is saying, well, we will deal with this, we will let the legal process take its run, but the sponsors they were not happy with the weight you are doing things and it looks like the tail is wagging the dog and the sponsors are running the nfl. >> the sponsors are providing a lot of money. we hope that the sponsors have their own conscience about these kinds of issues. and even their business relationships, the retailers and distribution systems are employed. it's like this doesn't feel like what are you doing about it.
10:27 pm
tom: houseparty thing that anheuser-busch will push it? >> i think that they want to see the nfl come out and address the issue openly. and i would hope that i would think that we will do so before the week is out. i have no information on that. but they don't want this to linger, they wanted to be addressed and i think that as a country, we generally like to be told the truth about what may have happened, how we could've handled it better, how we will move forward in the future. tom: at the same time, if you have a week of anything, a small, basketball, football, if you get a bunch of guys that are in trouble, they are turned off to that and then they are turned off for drinking your beer. >> absolutely. people have a choice. they can stop drinking bud or bud light. >> but won't heineken jump on it if anheuser-busch pulls out?
10:28 pm
>> that is a risk. but the standpoint as a good sponsor, you should do the right thing that your consumer will respect you for and if you think that's the right thing, then you do it. tom: will roger goodell go? >> no, i think he is an honest and straightforward hard-working person. and i think that he just has to look in the camera and address the issue head on. tom: tony tony ponturo, thank yr coming on the show. nasa is sending a flight into orbit. boeing and spacex would be the first private companies to send astronauts into space. hassan rouhani joined liz claman today and talked about his company saying this.
10:29 pm
>> it's about taking astronauts to the space station, transporting u.s. astronauts and for spacex, it is the next step in the technology that we are developing and it means that we have a key in nasa as it customer for human transport. >> the first commercial flights to the international space station not expected until 2017, but that is coming pretty quickly. speaking of lack, we will be right back. congress taking a vote to fund and train carrying rebels. and train carrying rebels. congressman lynn you, my friend are a master of diversification. who would have thought three cheese lasagna would go with chocolate cake and ceviche? the same guy who thought that small caps and bond funds would go with a merging markets. it's a masterpiece.

10:34 pm
majority of people are interested and they want to know what the answers are. but it seems like there has been like it was mucht's going on. more friendly, to say the least. was that your impression? >> the first thing that you have to understand is that adam schiff, congressman shipped is the one that asked for this hearing. so we were talking to what the results were being put out. and i think it was a pretty bipartisan hearing. we probably asked a few tougher questions. but ranking member cummings was really strong about the accountability that the state department has in enforcing some of these suggestions and recommendations that the board of standards and review has
10:35 pm
given to the state department that have not been carried out. in some of these have gone back to 1983 after the beirut bombing and after the african bombing in 1999. and so we have pretty much put the state department on notice. the we will be checking back and checking to see if they are going along with these recommendations and actually doing them. >> how long is this process? how long will we be having more hearings from the special committee? >> on this particular, i would think that you would have it in the next 45 or 60 days to see where they are at on the recommendations. tom: pretty quick. if you go back to this account of a reveal, a lot of people are saying that they have lost a lot of things. they have never interviewed
10:36 pm
secretary clinton or eyewitnesses and to us it wasn't a very good report and the members are selected by the secretary of state, which in my opinion does not make them an independent board, since the person that they are really looking at and what their communications and standards war is the one that selected them to be on the committee. and so we have uncovered some things and discuss some things today about the arb that i thought was very interesting. and also we had one individual on the state department that answered the questions that he was asked as best as the he could and he was not there during the attack, but he had been there.
10:37 pm
>> are you going to have former secretary clinton, some of these guys that you have been talking to recently that were there, cia contractors? >> i don't know who the chairman has lined up to come in to testify, but i am sure that those and some potential witnesses could be called before the committee. >> i think it would be helpful and i hope you do. thank you, congressman lynn westmoreland. >> thank you for having me. tom: on wall street with a record-breaking day for stocks. the dow jones gained 25 points to close with a new record high and the s&p 500 up three, the nasdaq up nine-point in volume. 3.1 billion shares today. janet yellen announcing that the federal reserve will end its online program in october, but will keep interest rates near

the justice department has faced criticism from democrats who claim that it did not do enough to punish wall street executives for the financial crisis. we are coming right back. >> president obama putting boots on the ground not provide the comic state but ebola. comic state but ebola. we have doctor so i can reach ally bank 24/7, but there are no branches? 24/7 it's just i'm a little reluctant to try new things. what's wrong with trying new things? feel that in your muscles? yeah... i do... try a new way to bank, where no branches equals great rates.

tom: new reports show the spread of the deadly ebola at virus could have a deadly effect on the hardest hit nations. this is coming the same pay that the first dose of an experimental ebola vaccine was given to a volunteer health worker. joining me now is doctor anthony
10:43 pm
fauci, director of the national institute of allergies and diseases. this whole business about how dangerous ebola is, especially after the news yesterday, the president says this, the question is how much danger are we in, because a couple of weeks ago i heard a lot of doctors they do you have to be able to touch somebody. so for us, what is the situation and the danger? >> its minimum if nonexistent. as we have said many times, the situation in west africa is an unfortunate result of the lack of a health care system that was able early on in the outbreak to be able to adequately identify and isolate entry and protect health care workers and as it started to spread, it spread in the way with ex-potential, which
10:44 pm
meant a more rapid rate than the control mechanisms or the capabilities and resources to actually do infection control, they were able to essentially stop it. the more i got out of control, the more dire the situation is and that really is the function of the inability to be able to do good infection control because of the lack of a good health care system, unfortunately, in those countries. so we have to ask what are the dangers here and certainly there is a possibility that someone who is from a west african country and got infected their, on a plane, when they got to their destination, and that could be washington or new york or london or peer us, that having got sick, that they went to the emergency room and unfortunately before people recognize what it was, they acted a health worker or a nurse or something. but there won't be an outbreak here. >> that is the question that
10:45 pm
i've never heard anyone ask, what is the just nation. between the time that i actually get a virus and i start feeling ill? >> well, somewhere between eight and 10 days that it can range between two to 21 days and the outer limit of exposure to the development of disease is about 21 days. but the point i was making that even someone came here and did get sick care, it is extraordinarily unlikely that there would be an outbreak because we have the capability of doing the proper isolation containment and infection control. so when you ask health workers what the dangers are, it is not that we are taking it likely but it is a reflection of the fact that the problem in west africa really relates greatly to the disparity of the ability of a country in west africa to handle infection control compared to a country that has a good health care system that can handle it.
10:46 pm
tom: you talk about the example that a lot of people use, which is someone gets on an airplane, and you travel and we have a here in the u.s. but you also wrote an article about the fact that ebola could be weaponize. can you tell me about that? >> i didn't write an article, but i answered a question that it could be weaponize and my response to the senator was that any buyers that you wanted to weaponize it, that anyone could weaponize it, which means you can make it in a way that it can cause a great deal of harm and destruction in society. and so when you go back to the air of the cold war, and it is very clear from intelligence that the soviets were stockpiling a number of microbes like smallpox, botulism, and
10:47 pm
even fever viruses which in food ebola, include the possibility of doing weapons of mass destruction. that is a hypothetical. they did and they never used it, thank goodness, but in answer to the question, of course it could be done. >> so the overall summation is because of our good health system, we are in pretty good shape. >> that is the bottom line. tom: doctor anthony fauci, thank you for joining us. >> it's good to be with you. tom: coming up next, how speaker john boehner takes aim at his own caucus and president biden makes another racially insensitive remark. the "a-team" takes that up in more. we hav

about this. he called president obama the first mainstream black eyed to come along that is articulate and bright and clean. when you walk into a 7-eleven or dunkin' donuts in delaware coming have to have an indian accent, and the list goes on and on. joe biden's greatest hits and we have a new one yesterday. >> yes, we sure do. does this mean anything about his chances to be our next president? >> with the iowa poll, i think 56 to 15, single digits nationally, i don't think so. >> what is the buzz at the water cooler there remapped. >> i don't think he has a snowballs chance, but i certainly hope that he runs just for entertainment value. campaigns aren't as funny as it used to be. jumping in would certainly add some funds the process. >> that is true.
10:54 pm
we are going to be bipartisan about this today. john boehner set on any given day, 16 of my members decide that they are going to go this way and then all of a sudden i have nothing. you might notice that i have a few knuckleheads at my conference. chris, speaking of knuckleheads, most of those people under the dome are knuckleheads. but what's he talking about? >> i think that he is undercounting, knuckleheads exist in both parties. i wish that the speaker would spend more time going after the democrats and less time criticizing his own caucus and party. he might be able to marshal a little bit more discipline and have fewer and knuckleheads if you are a speaker of the house. have you ever seen a democrat take shots at members of their own caucus were their own party like this? generally speaking, no. >> this goes to show, if he
10:55 pm
still going to be the speaker? >> in my mind he is getting done what needs to be getting done. whether it be balanced budget or immigration. it seems that the knuckleheads are ruling the roost. >> i have to say that there are a lot of knuckleheads in the senate and the republican-controlled house has passed 360 bills and move them along to the senate where harry reid buries them in the bottom of his desk drawer and they never see the light of day. so that a little bit unfair to john boehner. >> we will see if there is a better argument after the midterm election. let's get both of your reactions to this. despite this between the generals and the president, are there going to be what's on the ground? >> i suspect there will be. but struggles me more specifically today because you basically have the joint chiefs
10:56 pm
of staff and effective rebellion against the president's own stated words and policies. >> i'm sorry, but i grew up in the military that says that you obey orders and you don't debate it. >> well, i think that there is a lack of confidence from the commander-in-chief, yesterday was the chairman of the joint chiefs and today it was ray or tierno, the general in charge of the army and the chief of staff. we have others weighing in as well. and it's possible that it's coming. this is a harebrained scheme that we have going in the war against isis. and it's a serious thing. >> chris, thank you for joining us. >> my pleasure. tom: i appreciate both of you coming on tonight. that's it for us tonight. catch my radio show weekdays.
