we obviously have to defeat isis and the threat it poses, but the threat of a nuclear iran, the central banker of international terrorism for 35 years and a state that would, perhaps, have impunity against retaliation is a far graver threat. i don't think the president's speech or his policies have demonstrated that keen awareness of just exactly what a threat iran is. lou: according to some reports that a mocks the ideas in those nuclear talks that are apparently had dancing is to allow iran to keep as many as 4500 of its centrifuges. not clear whether that would be active for just those in use as well as builds but not in use. this is beginning to look like the president is contemplating some sort of half measure when it comes to a nuclear, what a nice

iran. >> well, i think it is even worse than that. our position has done progressively weaker and weaker than the position of the united nations security council and half a dozen resolutions saying that iran has to give up all enrichment and in richmond related activities. really what the administration is looking for is some face-saving gesture so that it can sign an agreement, declare victory, and conclude that the iranian nuclear threat is over. i am worried whether in the form of an october surprise, an announcement that peace is at hand because we have cut a deal with iran or maybe even worse the deal announced after the election so that no one can find out just how many concessions have been made, that we will have a deal that gives them pretty much what they want. lou: so the effect would be what they want, they would then have u.s., the united states and a coalition killing the islamic state

for them which would further consolidate their holdings over iraq and also eliminate the threat to assad in syria, so their proxy state would be fully protected. and they would have centrifuges. it would be an extraordinary diplomatic maneuver, almost unheard of success. >> right. you know, prime minister netanyahu warned today that the iranian leaders have tried to bamboozle the united states and the west. it is worse than that. the president is not being bamboozled. he is going into the deal with his eyes open. his whole tenor of the interview last night was how this was the problem of iraq with isis and we should be strengthening and aiding the government of iraq. it is absolutely wrong. it is not doing much to counter isis.

political strategist and pill is a prize winning columnist michael goodwin. good to have you here. let's start with those odds. 76%. is that where you put it? >> we certainly have the majority. we have 35 days to the death and a lot at fifth. we had good momentum could with the president is doing absolutely nothing to strengthen democrats anywhere. democratic kendis are running away from that fifth thaw. lou: do you agree? >> i do. the odds are not greater. given how the obama presidency has collapsed in a call polls. you look at some of these numbers, 38 percent approval , sometimes single-digit approval for the president's foreign policy. i know most voters don't vote on foreign policy, but the president's own popularity, his programs on popularity, the economy being sluggish for most people, it is amazing

republicans have not already locked it up. lou: it is as if they are holding back may be hoping there will be a third choice in this 2-party system. >> very well if it was on the ballot. a lot of disaffection, but he will be different. he raised expectations that he would be different, and he is. he is worse than anyone i've seen in my lifetime. lou: you talk about raising expectations. certainly he did. great expectations in 2008. but to think about moving those expectations aside, even if there had been zero expectations, this president just has not performed. >> i think most people -- yes, of course, we want utopia, we want it all, we wanted today. most people would settle for sheer competence, and this president did not give that. the sense that every time something happens, most recently with james clapper,

he is the last to know about it, whether it is the irs is, he does not know about it until he reads about it in the press. lou: or postures as such. >> every morning the president gets an intelligence briefing. we spend 50-$60 billion a year on intelligence. probably more. i promise you, if clapper raised his right hand and said this would lead to the president and the president raised his right hand, i bet clapper told him everything he needed to know. just like the pentagon people he said this is what you need to do, keep 10,000 troops in iraq to make it work and he does not take the recommendation. here's what he wants to. you can blame anyone you want, but the intelligence probably was there. lou: the question, even if it were the case, why would he blamed a subordinate? what kind of leader is that? what is the thinking? and what is the thinking about a president who says

mistreat them and do not pay them and things like that. but it would send a signal to others that they should think about coming. once you have a second amnesty after first the message is pretty clear. lou: what is your thought in terms of public policy? what is the united states to do? what would you counsel republicans, what would you counsel democrats? >> the unskilled or high skills? lou: all of it. >> amnesty -- lou: 4 million people in this year right now. >> legalization is a mixed bag, and you have to be careful. i would be very careful about legalization. lou: can i say, let's forget the signals and the nuance and just tell those eagerly awaiting legislators of hours in the president what they should do as succinctly as you can.
