tv   Cavuto on Business  FOX Business  October 26, 2014 8:30am-9:01am EDT

8:30 am
thank you to all of you for joining us. and just remember you can catch me weekdays 2:00 p.m. "money with melissa francis" on the fox business network. of freedom the number one business block continues with neil cavuto. a continuing crisis because we're godless? hi, everyone. i'm neil cavuto. we still don't know why they did it, but we know what happened because of it. terror. canada's capital city, the hatchet in new york city, so many are afraid to call these acts of terror. ben stein, what do you make of this battle back and forth,
8:31 am
tiptoeing around the "t" word and whether it's terrorism? >> well, we're tiptoeing around the "t" word, someone in canada said this wasn't terrorism, this was just a loser with a rifle. no, it's terrorism and islamic terrorism. we are not afraid of lutheran terrorisms. we're not afraid of e pipifk pailian terrorists. we're afraid of islamic terrorists. the majority of them are great law abiding people but we know there is a large network of islamic terrorists. we're afraid to call it that
8:32 am
marshalling the right proceeds. >> right. >> what does this all mean? >> in this country, it puts into action the fbi versus local authorities when we identify something as terrorism. here you have the prime minister identifying this act as terrorism, but yet you heard the reluctancecy on the behalf of the united states president to call this terrorism. he went as far to refer to this as a senseless act of violence, which is one of the biggest problems here. as ben stein has eloquently pointed out, how can we combat and end terrorism when we can't even recognize and identify it as such? that's a big problem, neil. >> gerri? >> i completely agree. i have toll you the idea of the senseless act is ridiculous. i married a canadian. they're politically correct beyond belief. sometimes ip don't understand what's going on around the
8:33 am
dinner table. >> with your husband? >> caoccasionally. the point mark stein made is, look, you have to stand up in what you believe in. if you don't believe in something, you'll fall for anything. that's the situation we're in right now. we seem to be backpedaling, wu don't want to embryce our institutions. nobody wants to wave a flag. that's a mistake. >> adam, what do you think? >> i completely disagree with what ben said. here's what i believe. this has nothing -- of course this was an act of terror. so was timothy mcvey, the unabomber who were not islamists, who didn't -- >> that was a long time ago, for god's sake. >> ben, you're making a huge mistake. when terrorism happens, we condemn it. we fight it. we bring the fbi in. but we do not, we do not bring religion into it or call people names. >> but you will see a pattern,
8:34 am
right, adam? you see a pattern. >> but it is religion. it is religion. it's an islamic cult attacking america. attacking western values. it is a religious issue. it's not a senseless act of vie loens t. is a religious issue. why can't we call it that? >> i completely disagree with you. these are criminals. we find out who they are and go after them hard. by the way, if they are representing foreign entities and governments, then we deal with it in that way. because that's the way to deal with it. as americans, we don't lead with a conversation about their religion because that's not who we are. >> but as americans -- >> but these people are islam t islamists. who are the terrorists? they're not memethodists. >> as americans a lot of us are good at math and at seeing pattern. >> a lot of us are seeing a consistency at this, whether the multiple attacks in canada, keep in mind the week started out with jihadists trying to run
8:35 am
over two canadian soldiers, killing one of them. we've had at least half a dozen similar incidents in the united states. so we do see enough of a pattern here to say whether they're lone wolves or what have you, it's coming at the behest of those arguing for just such actions. >> well, i'll point out that adam didn't reference me as wrong in my statements, which i think adam that means you're agreeing with me in pointing out that the president referred to this as a senseless act of violence when may i remind everybody that this man walked up with a gun to a soldier who was protecting a war memorial, killed him in cold blood and ran into parliament? adam, the president is not willing to call that terrorism? what is he willing to call terrorism? >> i don't get it. i'm with you. >> i don't knget the objection that being terrorism. >> i totally agree. of course it's a terrorist act. and if that has certain political ramifications or
8:36 am
bureaucratic ramifications about how we deal with it, that's like senseless word games. of course it's terrorism. i agree with you. >> you know what we're missing here? ben, maybe you can help me with this. i think we're kind of splitting hairs here. for semantics we're missing reality. and the reality is that, this being a business show, if you're going to commit resources to fight a battle and you're saying one battle is about just fighting bad guys doing bad things versus those whose common theme is a jihadist movement, which seems to be the case in most of the examples we outlined, then you're missing the battle for the war. >> you're missing the battle altogether if you take this pc line that adam is taking. look, when timothy mcvey and his friend blew up the federal building, we called them white aryan terrorists. that's what they were. when people are islamic terrorists blow up things and kill people and shoot people, that's what we should call them. so indeed we can focus our attention. we cannot pretend these people
8:37 am
are our friends or this is senseless. obviously the great majority of muslims in the world are perfectly fine people. no one questions that. but there is a hardcore and a large hardcore which is violently anti-american. until we recognize that, we are just fooling ourselves and playing games. it may work in san francisco. it doesn't work in the rest of america and it doesn't work -- >> the resources you're going to marshal then are different for fighting independent acts of violence whatever you want to call it versus a concerted effort on the part of ji haufdists to bring great harm to the civilized world. >> you're right. you have to communicate, use real words to explain what you're talking about. everybody needs to be on the same page. if you're not doing that, if you're politically correct, you don't want to offend anyone, you're not having that information, you're not marshalling the troops, getting the information you need. >> i hope you're proud of yourself, adam. i don't know how you look at yourself in the mirror. when we come back, remember the protests for amnesty for

8:41 am
starts at noon eastern. now back to "cavuto on business". so you are suggesting that ordering these green cards shows that the government is at least preparing for the president to announce this soon. >> no, i would not suggest that that is an indication that's what we're preparing to do. >> cards are being printed up i guess is my question. >> well, i don't think that's what the report is. i think the report is they ordered paper. >> well, here's why it gets to be crazily asked.
8:42 am
this issue of amnesty for illegals, maybe millions. what white house reporters want to know is anything the administration might be doing to prepare for a surge in worker i.d. card rz. the idea being sandra, you issue potentially millions of new cards you must be preparing for millions of new permanent citizen status or close to it. >> yep. that means they would be gobbling up a lot of the available jobs in the u.s. which are hard to come by right now. so the economic -- >> well, their argument is they're already here. >> they're already here and the more immigrants we let in the country, the epi, economy policy institute looked at this. the effect of immigrants on the u.s. economy, in good times, when the u.s. economy is thriving, adding immigrants into the mix actually improves the job situation. but they looked at the economy today. it is still soft. it is still weak. adding immigrants to the situation now and adding more residents to the united states now will only worsen the economic situation in this country.
8:43 am
i point out the job participation rate in this country still near four decade lows. it is falling precipitously under president obama's term in office. this is not a good time. >> you take a good economic number and you're like a dark cloud. >> i say it with a smile, neil. >> ga what do you make of that? >> it's not just the jobs, right? it's what the government spends. for every one of these family that becomes legal, they have access to 80 different kinds of welfare programs. that's $28,000 a year per family per household added on to our massive deficit. >> i'll step back from this and not even debate the economic pros and cons of what they're doing, just what they might be telegraphing. that is, if you're going to print millions of more of these cards, you're at least signaling potentially that you're going to delay or outright stop millions of deportations. what do you think of that? >> well, they were never going to have millions of deportations.
8:44 am
what they're doing is printing democratic party membership cards. this is all about creating a whole bunch of new democratic ro voters. i question whether it will work in the long run because i think the strong family values of the hispanic immigrants will work in favor of the republican party. what we're seeing is a political gesture pure and simple. i love pahispanics. i'm proud to say i have many friends and employees who are hispanics. i love them. they're incredibly wonderful. but we're not a nation if we don't have borders. we have to have them. >> adam, let's say the president does indeed telegraph millions of deportations delayed or outright stopped. republicans say that is granting millions permanent amnesty. what do you say? >> i think that there obviously is an a.mnesty in the workses. it will be part of a bipartisan i hope immigration reform plan. >> it's not bipartisan right now. >> i agree.
8:45 am
>> i didn't think he was going to do this, consulting with republicans in the midterm elections. >> i think he will especially if the republicans take the senate. i think enough republicans, including the leadership, wants immigration reform. the country wants immigration reform. so yes, i think plain and simple, neil, there will be an amnesty as part of that and it will be a good thing for the country and the economy. >> but it's always seen through the prism, sandra, of republicans having to do something here when in fact the criticism republicans have had is it's the democrats or administration, the greater point, they're not doing enough on the border. >> it's really interesting that this administration has not polled well especially recently on the immigration. you look at the importance of immigration, it actually is falling lower on the list as you have ebola on the table, the economy is still number one. >> actually there's an argument where the ebola scare has hurt the white house. >> that places more importance
8:46 am
on the immigration to the united states. in addition to the money spent on behalf of the government and what this will do to the economy and jobs, we have to worry about the education system here in the u.s. which continues to decline. that also plays into it. >> geri? >> i agree. education is something we already pay for for the kids in these illegal immigrant families. we're already paying part of the tab. the question is, how far and how deep should the federal government be in paying the tab for this. i think that's the big question. you have to talk to taxpayers. this is one of the times you have to think about who's footing the bill for this. >> because we all are. >> we all are. >> thank you very much. in the meantime, up next -- >> i'm super excited. 2010, 2012, now 2014. >> we're coming in this year with confidence. we're going to dominate. >> what else -- why would you go anywhere else? >> why indeed. san francisco giants fans are not wild about their team in the

stephane snoop. they're passing the buck to you. the federal government collecting a record amount of taxes. that's not new. but state tax revenues that is new, because that is now at a record. yet several states battled an issue with the midterms calling for more tax hikes but in creative ways. in massachusetts looking for a gas tax, things like roads and bridges. nevada, illinois, new taxes to fund education. i always find on these initiatives, and take nothing away from their ingenuity. their approach, raise money. not many approaches are to save money. >> what are they doing? it's automatic in massachusetts what they're trying to do. they want to automatically raise
8:52 am
your taxes and maybe you won't notice. the gas tax. massachusetts, the 11th highest taxes in the nation, if you fold in local and state taxes. an abomination. these are the people that protested at the founding of the country that taxes were too high from london. go figure. >> that was tea. this is -- maybe the drop in gas prices particularly emboldened them. you won't notice it, because prices have dropped so much, but to my greater point about this creativity, this enormous skill to find ways to raise money, but never to rein it in? >> well, one of the most famous ballot issues prop 14 did rein it in and terribly destructive to the state. i hail all the ballot initiatives. i think legislatures to raise or lower taxes. elected representatives should do their jobs. on the soda tax in san
8:53 am
franciscoance neil, i'm voting no. a horrible way to conduct -- >> whoa, whoa, whoa. wait a minute. do we have a becomes alert for that? holy toledo. ben stein? >> well, proposition 13 didn't ruing california. proposition 13 was a great step forward. the schools are a mess in california because we have so many hispanic, non-english-speaking immigrants. not because of prop 13. it's a matter of states' rights. >> i looked at the numbers. everybody cares about their gas prices because it affects our everyday lives. the folks in massachusetts as a result of this added gas tax would be spending about $300 more dollar as year. kiss away all of the benefits of those lower oil and gas prices good-bye. because that will wipe out any benefit the consumer in massachusetts has seen as a result of that. look, if you think that the government can spend thoses 3ds $300 better than you, write a letter. >> wow. are or e-mail. what are you doing to me?
