did very well last year, i don't know if they can keep it going for another year in light of all this. tracy: right. >> but some of the emerging markets, i think, can. and part of it's because india, for example, doesn't have the debt burden that europe has or even that we have for that matter. tracy: not yet. give 'em time. let's talk about 2015 now. everyone anticipating interest rates hopefully edging up, probably not until june at this point, quantitative easing going away. what happens then? >> well, short-term rates cannot go up significantly, and the reason is because long-term rates cannot go up significantly. right now we have a 2.16 ten-year treasury whereas we have ten-year italian and spanish bonds that are under 2% that arguably have a lot more risk than our own. and with europe being in a recession, perhaps deflationary environment, those rates are going to stay low, and it's going to act as a glass ceiling to keep our ten-year fairly low
5:46 pm
for the next year. if the fed were to raise short-term rates from 2.5 to 1.5, we'd have a flat yield curve, and they won't do that because that's not good for the economy. tracy: bottom line, the economy's barely even going to notice. where do we go then, 2015, up or down? [laughter] >> well -- [laughter] i'm going to give you a very decisive answer. 2015 is going to be a double-digit return. double-digit year. whether it's on the upside or the downside is what i don't want to get pinpointed toward. tracy: we could go either way, is what you're saying. >> it can. i think the volatility's going to continue through 2015. but here's an analogy that i like to make, it's kind of like when storm sandy came you remember just a couple years ago now, and i remember that the calendar said that the tide was supposed to be going out. it was an ebb tide, but yet the water was rising, and that's because the storm surge, the wind was keeping the water in, it was holding it in, forcing more water in even though the lunar cycle said we're going to
5:47 pm
have an ebb tide. it's kind of like that now because qe's not here and the market should be settling down, but we have a storm surge because of what's going on in europe and money coming into our market. so which is going tond out oi be -- to win out by the end of 2015? it depends on which one keeps its strength longer. tracy: either way, we're going to need a bigger boat. lot more high-tech these days. that's another factor as well as well as a lot of automakers concerned about liability because gm just today announced yet another 104 claims filed last week in their compensation fund. so for -- so far the numbers are 260 death claims have been filed, 42 of those have been paid out -- not paid out, but have been approved for payout by gm. so they're admitting, tracy, to 42 deaths as a result of the ignition switches. what's this all meant for the bottom line? not good for gm, their stock down about 18%. but fiat chrysler stock, not too many recalls and good performance for the stock last check, year to date up 31%. and, tracy, a lot of automakers have told us as a result of the recalls, people have been bringing their cars in, and they've sold them new cars. maybe it's a silver lining, i don't know if you can call it that. tracy: that's a definite silver
