but wall street has been celebrating all year long with the dow set to mark its sixth straight year of gains but like all great parties this one could set the stage for a massive hangover. looming interest rate hikes global slow down, weak earnings all have potential to put a damper on the market's run. here to discuss veronica daguerre from "wall street journal." matt welch, co-host of "the independents" and editor of "reason" magazine. what do you think? are we setting up for the correction everyone predicted would come but still has isn't. >> i think there is a lot like you said a different schools of thought on this some people are very bullish. they think economic indicators are looking good. job numbers are looking better, economic growth is looking better so that is one side of it. another side is saying corporate earnings, they will really be counting on the american consumer specifically to help boost profits and drive sales for companies going into the new

year. you can't count on europe. you can't count on some of these other countries to do that. really counting on american consumer. really depends how they feel. adam: matt, some of the corporate earnings we've seen, this is no secret, they get juiced because of stock buybacks and things like that. have they run the course on wall street? >> i wonder. keep in mind personally i'm a defensive investor and i love chasing bubbles where they seem to be forming. what i notice by watching this own network there is faithless bulls out there people who feel like i don't want to be on the sidelines of this thing. i don't necessarily believe in. for me that is a hint there is bubble mentality. that and fact we haven't seen household incomes go anywhere. they have been flat for -- adam: 10 years. >> 10 years. when that happens. and you have a housing boom that is investor-led not consumer led. now we're in 10% of the highes of 2007 in housing i wonder if there will be some investment level correction heading up in the near future. adam: we'll find out because the new year starts tomorrow but

let's move to something else. a mutated strain of flu. it is running rampant across the country. 36 states seeing flu outbreak at widespread rate according to cdc the flu shot is expected not much of a help. 90% of the cases have been all but immune to the vaccine. veronica there is great debate that doesn't get much attention even in years with no mutant strain of flu whether the it happens. in the elderly death rates don't get changed if they don't get vaccinated. >> i never got it before and got it this year and it won't work. the elderly and young children are ones we need to worry about that people tend to die from the flu. that is serious risk. adam: wash your hands cough into your arm. right the new york city subway and you will have natural immunity. how do you protect yourself? >> you do that and get the shot.

keep your eyes on, this stuff mutates, a vaccine even of more contagious and infectious diseases is not an automatic on-off switch. we treat the flu-like we treat car crashes in this country. there are some we decide to focus on ebola. adam: we think about one ebola death yet thousands and thousands of people die from infections at hospitals. either quickly jump in on this, i have a close friend who is somewhat callous he thinks the herd needs to be thinned humanity. when these mutant virus strains get going he says, here it comes. we have not had a outbreak with global devastating consequences like we had at beginning of century. are we do for that. >> i hope not. i don't want to be on the receiving end. we've advanced science so much hopefully we catch the things and they do happen. like in some countries where the hospital systems are not advanced. specifically we're lucky to be here in new york.

were pulled in the u.s. or equivalent of one in every five cars on the road. still promising december sales figures are offering hope for industry in 2015. veronica. i can think of nothing more pleasurable than an automobile. i'm a car nut. >> are you? adam: gm, 60 million vehicles yet we'll have next year record numbers of sales if economy stays mundane as it is now. >> they want to get the new car new model. with gas prices dropping i think this also will help fuel sales not just regular cars but bigger cars like trucks in the new year. watch the consumer for that. >> matt what do you think? >> i think it is interesting but i think the real revolution is five, 10 years ahead of us. we don't know exactly when it is going to happen but we're shifting from the car culture we grew up with the culture of the sharing economy. things like uber. people are using slack time to share and driverless cars and driverless technology even in cars we drive.

we'll see at some point a large reduction in cars in this country as we use capacity more. adam: other transition the kids are on the cell phones, want a car like a cell phone more of a technical device as opposed what we're used to. my brother is not a kid but he has got one and loves it. finally one new year's tradition getting a little less hairy thanks to animal rights. possum drop will not feature a live possum following a lawsuit from who else, peta. the town claims it will substitute stewed possum or festive road kill. they will not drop the possum to hit on the ground. they put it in the device to drop it. peta makes argument the critter could be scared after it released in wild could be dropped dead. what do you think? >> how powerful animal rights activity is are people listen. i had possums in my backyard. i think they're pretty tough. i imagine it might hold up in the little came.

here in times square a million revelers will take part. the focus for nypd will be focus doing what they do best, essentially keeping city safe. 1000 police in uniforms will patrol the streets. i'm told they're traveling in pairs due to recent anti-police protests. they are under heightened alert. the tragedy only made the force stronger. they will be out in the thousands. the police chief says as far as protests tonight that is possible that police say that people absolutely have the right to protest as long as they do it peacefully and laws are not broken. in addition to that, counter terrorism forces will be patrolling the streets with bomb-detecting k-9s and heavily armed units and roof surveillance teams. all the activity is closely monitored at nypd joint operation center located downtown on the second floor of one police plaza. that is the security hub behind the scenes. they will keep a watchful eye on any suspicious activity on all

will this help the drought situation out west or chilling to the bone? >> not really. snow in urn socal fornash, any moisture is good, they need so much moisture years and years of moisture to catch up but you have to start somewhere. the moisture they're getting temperatures incredibly cold. most of us forget in december it was winter, it was so incredibly warm. get ready it is all coming back. current thames, we're below freezing for majority of the country at this point. snow into southern california, inland empire, elevations 1200 feet see accumulating snow. see that mexico snow. very heavy snow falling across northern arizona above around 3,000 feet elevation. we'll continue to see that. we have winter storm warnings. california those are expired and those are mostly done. around parts of the four corners tonight and tomorrow, big bend of texas we'll talk about accumulating snow and some icing going on. overnight tonight, these are the low temperatures. every state except for florida.

adam: sony working hard to get more people to watch "the interview." the troubled movie is about to receive a wider audience and that starts tomorrow. sony says it will expand its video-on-demand distribution of the film making it available on playstation on new year's day. not only that it reached an agreement with cable and satellite providers to bring it to an even larger audience at home. the number of theaters showing the movie will increase, doubling to nearly 600 screens. sony so far reported a big loss on the movie making just $18 million on what is expected to be a $100 million investment. the markets 2014 bull run is looking like its going out with more of a whimmer. the dow is fighting a losing battle to end the year over 1,000. lori rothman is watching new york stock exchange. >> we're at worst levels of the
