it is always about money. holiday sweaters not just for your grandma's bridge club anymore. these beauties are going mainstream moving from novelty items to year round sellers. the ugly sweater fad has blossomed into a multimillion dollar business. here is the company's co founder. thanks for joining us. this is a fad that will last? >> absolutely. you know, when we started the company back in 2011 the same question comes up every year, is the trend going to die? is it going to continue? from what we have seen so far is it not only continued but is growing year over year. >> it must be doing well because you used to be a practicing lawyer.

now you have projected sales of $8 million this year. how do you make it go beyond christmas? >> christmas to date has definitely been our main season. what we are doing to kind of get outside of the season ality that we are facing is we are launching new non-holiday products. i brought a few with me here. >> good. >> so we've got st. patrick's day shirts we are working on like this. we have some american flag clothing, some patriotic women's leggings. we have jump suits valentine's day shirts. we work with a company that has licenses with a lot of major colleges. and we designed an exclusive line of sweaters with them and purchased them and we sell them on our website. looking to kind of break outside of our season ality and become more of a year round.

>> you have to in order to stay in business. you managed to make a deal with urban outfitters. you have an investment on shark tank. the sweaters are $65. are people buying these as a novelty? do you worry that the ugly sweater is fun for a little while and it is a fad like everything else. there is a lot of competition. how do you make your selved different? >> one is the actual products themselves. we don't try to just make tacky run of the mill sweaters. we put a lot of thought into making each sweater. a lot of the humor is very subtle. i think people fall in love with the products. we have very high quality sweaters. a lot of people can't tell that based on the website from our pictures. then they receive the product and then they are shocked by the quality. we recognize we have a higher price point. >> you are making money so

congratulations to you. thank you for coming on. >> thanks for having me. can you handle it on a cold winter's night. one seasonal business has a few tricks to get you in the door. here is founder and ceo of frozen yogurt chain. you are all over manhattan. you guys are everywhere. you are elsewhere, as well. >> we have 43 stores in six states in the east coast and we are growing. >> the premise is you get to grab the handles and make your own yogurt. a lot of people have knocked you off. how do you deal with that? because there are a lot of popup yogurt stores especially here that straight up copy you. >> we were the first movers when it came to offering self serve yogurt sun dadaes. we mix it into something people are used to. >> one thing we have learned

from the cupcake bubble which didn't end too well around here. you look at crumbs, when you focus on one product in particular it can be pretty tough especially when it is not your season. do you worry about that? >> seasonality we are faced with. >> it is great when i feel like yogurt, the rest of the time i am not stopping in. >> it is up to our product team to focus on individuality to allow customers to want the flavors. >> you are doing a hot cocoa. >> we have a hot cocoa utlessing our frozen yogurt and working on a program that extends to the breakfast products with better for you options. things like hot oatmeal fresh yogurt and fun interactive experience. >> is there a best selling

yogurt in the winter months? something that does well when everybody is cold? >> the classic favorites will be number one. we have winter flavors like peppermint candy which help drive in additional traffic. >> appreciate your time. >> with all the frigid winter weather probably the last place you want to be is surrounded by ice. here in manhattan one below freezing bar is heating things up. minus five is a mid town hot spot that keeps it cool at 29 degrees. i have driven by your place a bunch of times. in the middle of the summer it was very inviting when it is sweltering outside and you definitely want to get in the heat. when it is freezing out i don't know that i want to go into a place that is even colder. how do you sell that? >> that is a funny question that we get asked all the time. it is ironic but we bode very well in the winter.

it is such an experience that people are already dressed for the occasion. whether they are coming from skating at rock center they are ready to go and want to explore a winter wonderland of ice. it's not that cold. it really is a controlled environment with no wind and no humidity. sometimes it's warmer in the ice bar than outside. >> i understand that when people come in you give them hats and gloves. how does it work? >> we are like an attraction. you pick different packages and comes with the gear to keep you warm. you can upgrade to fur coats. it's just an ironic fun, frozen tundra that we transport you into. >> one of your locations is right down the street from us here in mid town manhattan. you have a location in las vegas, orlando, florida. that makes a lot of sense to me in a warm weather destination

that this would be something that attracts people. >> when we first conceived the concept and we were going warm weather climates are the place to be. since we have been here in new york city the winter has proven to be a great deal. we are looking at san francisco and more colder climates because we do well in both seasons. >> what kind of drink do you serve that makes sense in a frozen bar. it seems like i'm going to want a hot drink. >> we tend to name our drinks after tropical things. there is tropical drigs. emotionally you feel like you are warmed up. they are all served in glasses made of ice. until you put that ice glass to your list the experience doesn't come through. it is a cool experience. >> i will stop on my way home. have a drink waiting. >> we're ready for you. move over, we are going to show you some of the weirdest travel gadgets you didn't know you needed.

so it really, the skill involved with that is amazing to me. what do you think? are you going to get one of those? >> there are two tough competitors. one is walking and the other is not looking lazy. >> people on the people mover on the middle of the airport. why would you be ashamed of this? >> it is not a good bag. i think you are a double loser on this deal. >> how about the wearable sweeping bag. this one looks totally ridiculous to me. in one ad i saw they have kids in it. it is very hot. what do you think? a wearable sleeping bag? >> not for travel but if they make one with a neck tie i might wear it around the office. >> last time i went to mars i wore it. it is really cold on the red planet. i suggest on your next trip to mars give it a shot. >> the other one because your hair is much too lovely the ostrich pillow that you just

sort of put on. it is incredibly antisocial. do you have one of these? >> i really feel like i would be representing. i can't imagine wearing this. it is like walking on a big ostrich head. >> i think that is pretty much the idea that you isolate yourself from society. what do you think about the plane sheet? i think the seats are yucky. i would put one of these on the seats. >> it takes people so long to put the bags overhead. >> mark, the tourist strap which is very hostile to the person in front of you whose seat you are covering with the strap. >> this is a human sling shot. you are going forward. forget about it. >> the guy on the inside seat

might not reach the bathroom in time. >> there is all kinds of problems. i lot of these are focused on being antisocial. maybe you shouldn't travel if you can't stand people this much. if you are looking to book your next vacation the hottest travel destinations you will want to check out in 2015. some hot spots may surprise you. one of the big ones is poland. you want to go to poland? >> talking about hot spots poland has phenomenal places. there is really great cities in there. i always like the play on words poland, hot spots, it does have all of the seasons. poland i this can is really hot at the moment. >> mark one of them on the top ten i had to look up because i didn't know where it was. it's an island off the coast of wales. it was number ten on one of the lists that we found. >> i visited wales several

times. beautiful, beautiful greenery. i definitely suggest wales tied into overall uk trip. >> what is your number one choice? what is the hottest hot spot? >> southeast asia is hot. vietnam in particular burma, cambodia. river cruises are hot there. check that out because the experience is incredible. you are showing singapore right now. singapore is the diamond in the rough of southeast asia. that is a great way to tie an entire trip together and get the cosmopolitan feel of singapore along with the raw feel of vietnam. >> whichf othese appeals to you? >> i have to say poland. my wife is from poland. on the off chance that she is watching right now. they are lovely people. so sweet. >> very clever. what is your number one pick? what do you think is the hottest hot spot of 2015? >> i think an icy spot but i have iceland at the top of my

business of sharks for many divers the possibility of coming face-to-face with a great whit real. now there is a device that will keep them firmly at bay. it is called a shark shield. amanda wilson is shark shield's general manager. she joins me from tampa. tell me how this works. >> shark shield is the world's only scientifically proven electrical deterrent. we have two electrodes and an antenna that trail behind a surf board. it produces a field that keeps them 15 to 20 feet away from the wearer. >> how did you test this and figure out that it would work? >> there has been a lot of testing done. it has been 25 years in the making. the original technology was developed out of south africa. they had a space of fatal shark attacks and wanted to look at nonlethal attacks.

they started playing around with how to exploit shark senses. in regards to testing there istypically two different methods. one is suspending a large piece of tuna in bloody water and then turning the shark shield on and off and seeing whether it takes the bait. the second is towing a steel decoy behind a boat. >> does it hurt the shark at all? have you heard from animal rights activists? >> actually animal rights activists are quite supportive of it because it is a shark conservation tool. if we can prevent shark attacks then we stop the discussion of shark nets. it has no long term effects on the shark. >> it is being sold in florida for $600. i wonder is there a big market for this? because i saw 700 people die each year from toasters. about five from shark attacks. it seems like it is not -- while

it is a fantastic device if a shark were pursuing me i would pay any amount of money to have it on me. i don't know how common that it. >> it is not so much that people die from them but people have a fear from sharks. if you have a spear mishfishermen that it is an attraction for sharks. they will have bull sharks and tiger sharks chasing them trying to steal their fish. that becomes a situation trying to protect themselves. >> how many have you sold roughly? >> well, we have been selling them in australia for 12 years. so we have sold well over 25,000 units. >> amanda wilson very cool. thank you for coming on today. we really appreciate your time. from repelling them to tracking them a non-profit company has been tagging sharks across the world making it possible for you to follow great

whites right from your phone. major companies are opening their wallets to make all of this possible with expeditions costing millions of dollars. chris fisher is founder chairman and expedition leader. did you hear about the shark shield? how do you feel about the product? >> i think it can ease people's minds. you are trying to manage against something so statistically unlikely it is mostly for the people who is wearing its only mental ease. >> you talk about tracking them to see their natural pattern. do you think something like that would throw off the natural pattern? >> no. it is a brief interaction. it is experimental that people are trying to figure out. the likelihood is so low that you could use anything and it would be likely effective 100% of the time. >> you actively track around 30

sharks right? you have an app that does it. one of our producers is really into this and was following the shark lydia. tell us the story of lydia. >> lydia was a shark that was the first time any shark was tagged in florida. she has travelled over 25,000 miles in the last 18 months and really connected florida to new finland and to the uk by these massive migrations while she reveals the secrets of her life. where is she breeding and giving birth. we have to understand the lives of the sharks. if there is not an ocean full of sharks there will be no fish for our kids to eat in the future. >> why do we needs sharks for fish? >> they keep everything in order. if we remove them from the ocean you start to see fisheries collapse. so we are losing 250,000 a day 100 million a year. we have to develop the data so we can create a future for them. >> is that a reason why companies like caterpillar

landry's yam ha fund the project. why are they interested? >> we are starting to see fortune 500 starting to understand that the great countries that built the planet will need to create a future for the planet. when you see someone like chairman of caterpillar adding sustainability as a core value we need a robust future for the planet. shell is now dipping their toe in the water to help us maximize our science. you know the millennial, they want to work with organizations that are doing good while they do well. we are a perfect vehicle for that. >> talk to me about cool technology that you use? >> some of the latest tracking technology in the world that we mount on the fins of the sharks so every time they stick their fin out of the water it beams their location into our office which we share on the tracker

with the world. so the whole world is involved in probably the most charismatic research project in recent times in the ocean in real time with the phds. while the students follow the sharks and pick their favorite sharks we have a stem educational curriculum that allows them to learn their math and geography and sciences while they are tracking their favorite sharks. >> it sounds so cool. we are watching the video and it is showing how you tag the sharks. it looks dangerous. it also looks like you might be hurting them? >> it's not dangerous. one of the key things you are seeing when you watch our work is world class fisher men coming together with world class scientists to develop the fundamental data we need. >> you are not hurting them. we are looking at a video and it looks painful. >> the truth is in the tracker. you release them and we are tracking them for years and years and they are regaining regular migratory cycle. >> has anybody gotten hurt?

>> even racists love macaroni and cheese. people like recipes. she was able to make money. she has an opportunity here to try to make a turn around and improve her image. >> she has gone into a new business model where she just rather than being on a network she has her own subscribers her own show. if only 3% of her facebook fans subcribed to her new network she will make $17 million. how do you feel about that? >> i don't see the appeal of paula deen. >> she is kind of the jim cramer of food. it is an entertaining show. >> she does remind me a little bit of mel gibson.

she can make more money than ever before. what do you think of that one? you have gotten quiet all of a sudden? you good friends with her? >> i feel like we are kindred spirits. >> it is somebody who is becoming more well known and more famous as a result of going off to jail and more marketable as a reality star. >> he begins to make money off of the crime she committed but she can make money off of her rising celebrity as a result of that. remember jerry springer and all of that. you wonder the american public has this appetite for this non sense. >> innegativity. >> i think i speak for all residents that we are grateful to her for enforcing the brand. >> the last one.

jay-z and beyonce. you had the elevator video which was supposed to destroy their brand that they are this happy couple and here they are fighting. it seems like even though this was supposed to shatter the brand all it did was generate more interest and make more money off of the concert. you started to wonder was all of this fake just to generate even more interest in them? >> people who have -- >> put these guys in a different category. if you don't like their music they are great talents. the other people are selling the controversy. i think most ticket sales are based on their music. >> beyonce besides being who she is, she is beautiful and she doesn't need the controversy and the fight to sell her brand. i would like to invite her sister to give me a beating.

don't let the cute smiles and cuddly toys fool you. it is not easy being a baby. when feedings and naps become toohave the option of being pampered at a baby spa. it is based in houston texas. its owner joins us now. we are captivated by these photos. we love looking at them. what is going on? are they floating in water? and it kind of looks like they might have trouble breathing. tell me how this works. >> so they are floating in purified water. we start them as early as two weeks old and take them out to about six to eight months. but our flotation device allows for them to float by themselves in the water. while it looks like maybe it's a little precarious it is really

just an inner ring where their chin balances and supports thep. >> what is the benefit of this? >> the benefit is that really there is no fitness programs for newborns to move up until they can roll over or crawl they are either being held or in a carrier. so this really gives them the chance to begin moving which starts early brain development and early physical development. >> a single group visit costs $65. a little bit steep. what is the advantage of doing that versus having them in the bath tub at home? >> we always encourage parents to bathe with irtha babies at home. it is a great bonding experience. water is natural for babies. they just came out of it. being able to move on their own with our flotation device is what is unique. they are not able to do that just laying in a bath tub or being supported by a parent at home. and then the flotation part is

followed by an infant massage. >> i know you said it helps neurological development. how so? >> yes. right brain/left brain starts when a baby begins to crawl. when they can move limbs in the water it starts early neurological development. >> do they like it right away or do you have some that are just not into it? >> i would say about 98% of the babies that we put in absolutely love it. we are always going to have the 2% that are having an off day or maybe it's not for them, but those are great numbers, 98% that really like it. the younger ones actually take to it more than the older babies. >> thank you so much. it's a lot of fun. we love the photos. thanks for coming on. we appreciate it. move aside marriott and hilton. a new invention is changing the way you vacation.

introducing the pod a futurestic approach to napping complete with a tv and tablet. here is pod time's co founder. where can i find a pod? >> well, mostly you can find them in corporate offices for napping. and i started pod time over three years ago after working here in the city in london. sometimes getting quite tired to the point where you can't focus as much as you would like to. i'm sure a lot of people could relate to that. i did research and found if you take 15 to 20 minutes out to go off line and relax then it is rejuveinative and you feel better. i set about designing pods to take that 20 minute break which a lot of companies are adopting now. >> it is three feet wide and seven feet long. it is claustrophobic?

it kind of looks like an mri machine? >> fundamentally you try to create a private space within a busy environment. we made sure that it was big enough inside to not feel claustrophobic. everybody who has tried it agrees it is okay. >> is there a stigma to napping at work? i think i would be embarrassed to be sleeping in the pod. i feel like that wouldn't go over so well. >> well it depends on the company. it is up to them to trust their employees to use it properly. so far we have some well known corporate clients like facebook. we have done our second facebook office office. lots of companies are adopting and buying the pods. i think the culture of it is something becoming more well known as with any new concept it takes a while. >> i can imagine facebook doing

you can have your coffee and eat it too. an eatery in los angeles is serving up edible coffee cups. i thought new york got the cool stuff first. here is owner of alfred coffee and kitchen. you have one there. can you show it to me? >> i do have one here. >> how do you sip it? i don't understand it. doesn't the coffee burn through the chocolate and you are covered in coffee? >> no. actually, it only fits about two to three ounces of espresso and a little bit of milk. just the amount of liquid so it is triple dipped by chocolate. >> my mouth is watering looking

at this. i imagine the chocolate melts into the coffee as you are getting ready to drink it. is that what is going on there? >> absolutely. it mixes in a little bit. by the time you are done with the liquid you have a gooey chocolaty cone. >> i was shocked when i saw the alfred cone as youcule call it costs $8. i thought starbucks was expensive expensive. >> a lot of people are buying these. it is a luxury item. people come in from all over the place and want to buy one. it is not like a repeat every day. i don't know anybody that can afford those calories but it is a nice cute thing. you sit down with your friends and enjoy it. >> how many calories is it? you brought that up. >> we are not sure right now or just my lips are sealed. i think about 300 calories. it is a lot of chocolate. >> i think it is more than that.

the other thing i think is funny is you keep it on the cafe's secret menu. you don't advertise it is in there. >> one thing we came up with is that everybody loves a good secret. everybody likes to be in the know of the secret. we kept it on there. it is like a fun thing we have going on. we have a secret menu. >> what else is on the secret menu? >> well, we also have a $10 latte which is made with almond milk. and then we are about to debut the alfred float which is a new interpretation on an old fashioned root beer float but using cold brew coffee on draught. that comes out -- >> you are a marketing genius. thank you so much for coming on the show. we appreciate your time. i can't wait to try it. thank you. >> thank you so much. appreciate it. it is time to wake up and smell the keg.

commitment. this is here year round. we have about 80% of our customers that got a keg rater this summer has kept it through the winter. >> can you spike it with anything else? it looks like there is alcohol involved. can you do it? >> actually, we recently launched our wholesale program in california in san francisco to market the keg to bars and caves and bakeries. >> do they put alcohol in it? >> how long does a keg last? >> it will never last as long as the shelf life. you put it in an office it will be gone in a day. the shelf life is a month and a half. >> how much does it cost? >> about $1 a cup. >> i guess for an office that is expensive but for somebody buying it -- do you have plans to branch out? >> we are working on expanding to most major markets in the united states. i think by the summer of 2015 we will be in a lot more cities.
